RE: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2023-01-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Chris,

Yes, that is exactly what it means. One would have to remove the device from
the wall plate in order to replace the batteries.

However, this should not be a deterrent as I suspect that one would only need
to change the batteries once a year, if that often.

Given the level of device detail that Apple Home Kit provides, I would not be
surprised if it reported device battery level. Again, I do not know since I
did not insert any batteries into my unit.

I will admit that, now that I've gotten the unit working with Siri, I find
myself using Siri rather than the physical buttons to control the thermostat
(smile).

I will force myself to use the buttons on the device, at least once a week, so
that I continue to be comfortable doing so.

Mark

Thanks Mark. I did not get the point of having to install batteries before
attaching to the base. Does that mean you have to take the thermostat off its
base each time you need to change the battery? Does the app have a battery
meter to let you know if the battery is weak?

Hello Sieghard,

You're a funny man; however, in this instance, the batteries can be used to
power the device if one does not have the C cable.

Obviously, when using the batteries as the power source, the device would
remain active regardless of any external circumstance.

Re: moving apps

2023-01-06 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I will try this method the next time I need to move an app. I have always thought it were as if something was slugish somehow and wasn't quite following the swiping to get to what I want. By no means is it 100 percent acurate, but I have discovered that if I swipe two selections beyond what I want, then swipe back to it, it usually does what I want. I cannot promise this will work for anybody else, maybe not even me next time. Arnold Schmidt Sent from  Arnold's  iPhone S E 3On Jan 4, 2023, at 11:21 PM, R Van Lant wrote:

I think you should report this to Apple Accessibility because I have had this happen as well quite a lot and I believe it's simply a bug.
All you can do when it happens is take the items out of the folder and try again, it will work eventually.

I mostly understand how to move apps around the home screen, to and from the App library, but I do not always get the results I want.

I have a row on my home screen that is empty except for one app. I want to place an app to the right of that one lone app on that row. I can’t do it consistently.

I sometimes create folders without wanting to do so. VoiceOver announces “Drop App X before (or after) app y, and that’s what I want to do, but when I double-tap, I’ve created a folder. Then I have to drag an app out of the folder to get
 rid of it.

Can anybody shed any light on what I might be missing in all this?

Ha, an interesting take. I've been a programmer for a long, long, very long
time, but I've never heard of any programming object called a coupon. I thinhk
that's quite funny! I've heard of lexical tokens, syntax trees, parsing
algorithms, fuzzy logic, datapoint fragmentation, forking, relational pyramids,
reciphering, lots of other interesting linguistic oddments, but coupons? Sure
would like to find out what that's really all about.

It did not occur to me until yesterday but, I too, have encountered
this word being spoken on my 14 with iOS 16.2.

Now keep in mind that in no way am I speaking on behalf of Apple; in
short, this is just my opinion. Said opinion, being the following:

The word "coupon" has no practical user meaning for anyone using the OS.
This announcement is happening because somewhere in the programming
language, a display handler is mistakenly being announced by VoiceOver.

Now that I think about it, I encountered this announcement very early
on but immediately dismissed it because I could tell that it was
randomly announced during various screen display transitions.

It is just a VoiceOver programming glitch in so far as the developers
inadvertently failed to suppress VoiceOver from announcing this
particular behind-the-scenes function.

So, not to worry, this has happened in the past and will, from
time-to-time happen in the future.

Again, this is just my opinion, nothing more.

May I suggest doing a hard reboot if you have not done that in a while.
Not a shut down but a hard reboot.

For me this issue is a constant when I use Eloquence. For example, I can read
only about three pages in a Kindle book before speech stops. Pretty much any
news article I read or other content of more then a few paragraphs has the same
happen.

If I don't use Eloquence, the problem of speech stopping goes away.

I have not noticed a change. There have been times for many versions when
something in an article or web page stops VO.
Could you maybe give one or two links that demonstrate this behavior.
It has not happened often enough for me to be bothered by it, but if it is
happening a lot; I would also send example links to Apple of course.

2023-01-06 Thread Andy Baracco
The purpose of the C wire is to provide power. Some units will allow for
the use of batteries to provide this power. it appears that this is the case
with this particular unit.

Hello Chris,

This particular thermostat has a terminal for a grounding wire but I do not
know if one is required. I think not.

While not wanting to get off-point, I will say that I suspect that many
thermostats, in order to be widely compatible, allow for a great many
installation options.

For example, in the setup manual, for this model, it instructs the installer
to insert 2 batteries into the unit before attaching it to the bass, that
should already be mounted onto the wall. However, this unit, has a
terminal, on the back, for a power cable. It's not actually called a power
cable but I cannot remember the actual name of the cable. if one has such
a cable already built into the house, as does mine, then batteries are not
necessary.

I had a professional installer switch out my old thermostat for the new one.
He did it in seconds and did not need to read the installation setup guide.
These setup guys are written for the non-professional user, in most cases.

In a word, it is amazing. The physical buttons are easy-to-use and allow

I did not configure the wireless settings until late this evening because
the buttons work so well.

However, I now have the device setup to work with either Alexa or Siri.
And of course, one can use the Sensi app which is remarkably VoiceOver
accessible.

Now I will tell you that the Apple Home Kit setup was a thousand times
easier than was Amazon Alexa. In fact, for the first time, I was truly
disappointed with Alexa because, in my opinion, not only would a blind or
low vision person be hard pressed to configure the unit without sighted
assistance, but the process is unintuitive and convoluted. In addition,
at the time of this writing, one cannot setup Alexa with the device until
one uses the Sensi app to create an external account, etc. Ridiculous.

Apple Home Kit, on the other hand, was fast, simple, and could easily be
configured by a totally blind person as long as the person had the
security code which is included on a sheet of paper located inside the
package. The best part? One does not need to install the third-party
Sensi app in order to be up and running in minutes.

I have decided to use Siri to run the thermostat as doing so is intuitive
and works flawlessly from all of my Apple devices including my Apple
Watch.

I think the Sensi people must love Apple because, if one did not want to
configure Home Kit, manually, to work with the device, one only has to
point iPhone camera to a QR code located in the packaging which
automatically launches Home Kit and begins the configuration process.
Most impressive, to say the least.

While I love Alexa, this round definitely goes to Siri.

Thank you all for your contribution to this thread and, like James, I
definitely recommend this $80 unit to anyone who is in the market for a
new thermostat, WiFi enabled or not.

It also works with Alexa and there is an app for I Phone and I think,

Hi Becky, this is Mike from Oklahoma. I also have an iPhone SE 20. So far
everything seems to be working OK. I would recommend that you either call Apple
Accessibility or if it is possible you may want to go to the Apple store and
see if they will help you with your phone. Sounds like something might have
gone defective in your phone.
I hope you were able to get the help you need help things will be fixed for you
