Poll: What is your favorite iPhone of all time?

Even though some people say that iPhones look the same year after year, I beg
to differ. Now, yes, if you go from an iPhone 13 Pro to an iPhone 14 Pro, there
is going to be very little change in the design and form factor.
But what about when we went from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4? Or if you are
someone that waits years to upgrade, and you go from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone
14 Pro? Those upgrades or differences become much more drastic.

Depending on when you got your first iPhone, your choices may differ. I am
lucky enough to have owned pretty much every iPhone since the very first iPhone
back in 2007. Little did I know that 16 years later, I would be using the same
brand.

The iPhone has gone through several design evolutions over these 16 years. I
began to ask myself which iPhone was my favorite iPhone of all time: Was it the
OG version, the iPhone 4/5 series, or one of the newer ones? What was your
favorite iPhone?
iPhone design over the years

I do not want to get too detailed, trying to review everything single design
change Apple has made with its iPhone lineup, but I do want to highlight some
of the big changes they made as the iPhone lineup matured.

Original iPhone
This phone has many names: the iPhone 2G, the iPhone 1, or just the OG iPhone.
But this is the one that started it all. The iPhone was released in June of
2007 with its two-tone look. It was a nice silver aluminum with the bottom
fourth made of this black rubber-feeling material. It was small, had rounded
edges, had that famous physical mute switch, and had the headphone jack that
caused so many issues with third-party headphones because of how far the
headphone input went into the phone.

iPhone 3G & 3GS
After the OG iPhone, Apple really changed the look of the iPhone 3G. It was
called the 3G because the original iPhone only had EDGE data connectivity, and
iPhone 3G was the first to give us better 3G data support. But the design did
change. It was now made of this reflective black plastic (or white, if you
remember that one). It had more of a bubbly feel to it, and I remember it used
to rock on the table a lot because the back was not flat. I personally liked
the white one better, but this was the first real design change Apple gave us.

iPhone 4/4s/5/5s
This was peak iPhone design time. Apple got rid of the cheap-feeling plastic
casing from the iPhone 3G lineup and went to glass and metal for their entire
iPhone. This is the phone that made you feel like you were using a piece of
jewelry. We got front and back glass for the iPhone with a metal frame to hold
it all together.
A few things to note are that the iPhone 5 was the first iPhone to give us a
larger display and the first to get the lightning connector. We also had
antennagate during this time, where users would complain about a dropped signal
when covering the antenna band with their hands. We also got a selfie camera in
these iPhones, and touchID came to the iPhone 5 lineup. Apple also gave us the
iPhone 5C lineup during this time, which was a forgetful offering.

iPhone 6 to iPhone 8 Plus
This period of iPhones covers a wide range of iPhones. This was the time we had
bendgate because the iPhones were just so thin. We also had the first-ever
camera bump and our first dual camera setup with the iPhone 7 Plus. Lastly, we
also got our first plus-sized model iPhone. These phones were ultrathin,
especially when you compare them to today's iPhones. Apple was in a state where
thinness was considered a premium feature - so the thinner, the better. These
phones got rid of the back glass and went all aluminum for the casing. In my
opinion, these were nice, but it was a very safe design that peaked with the
matte black iPhone 7 Plus

iPhone X to the iPhone 11 Pro Max
During this period, Apple went back and innovated again. This was the magical
introduction of Face ID and the iPhone X. Gone was touchID and the forehead and
chin bezels. This was the first iPhone that was truly bezel-less with its
all-glass casing. Gone was the headphone jack; AirPods really began to take
over during this time.
We also got the iPhone 11 lineup this time around, which included our first
triple camera array on the 11 Pro Max. I remember thinking that this camera
bump was insanely big when I first got it. The iPhone 11 lineup was also the
first time Apple separated its iPhone offerings into Pro and non-Pro models.
The gold 11 Pro Max was one of my favorite iPhones ever.

iPhone 12 to iPhone 14 Pro

the Apple Card to include a disclaimer line that it does not apply to non-USA

Not at this point:

Another year has gone by without Apple expanding Apple Card availability
outside the US

Tom Sykes

POSTED ON 01/01/2023

Another 12 months have gone by without Apple expanding Apple Card availability
outside the US, over three years after the service first launched in August
2019. Apple Card, created in partnership with investment banking company
Goldman Sachs, allows users to track spending and help manage bills within the
Wallet app on iOS – completely fee-free, and with lower interest rates compared
to traditional banks.

Users can make purchases using their Apple Card with Apple Pay on their iPhone,
iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac, or with the optional titanium Apple Card banking
card, which features no printed card number or security code, making it the
world’s most secure credit card.

Since its launch, Apple has kept Apple Card exclusive to customers in the US,
although at one point there were rumors that an international expansion was on
the table after

Apple acquired Credit Kudos, a UK open banking startup earlier this year,
suggesting the service could arrive in the UK, as well as the iPhone maker
receiving trademark approval for the name Apple Card in Canada in 2021,
although nothing ever came of the two developments.

The credit card industry works differently in the US than the rest of the
world. The fees companies charge to merchants whenever they take a card payment
are relatively low elsewhere compared to the US, making it hard for Apple to
offer the same Apple Card perks that it does in the US, such as Daily Cash
back. With there being no expansion to the availability of Apple Card over the
past three years, it seems like at least for now, Apple is happy with having
the service limited to users in the United States. There is no word from Apple
on if an international expansion is planned, but many users are hoping that the
New Year sees the iPhone maker expand the availability of the service beyond
Apple’s home country.

Tom,Excellent, I think I've just set one up! just to be clear for other people, it seems that if you choose media your options for videos comes up, I didn't do this, I was thinking that might mean social media and I just didn't want to get tangled up. instead, having chosen to set up a shortcut, I put in the search box the word video and I got the option of "take a video" and I accepted it and it works!Thank you so much, now I shall be quick to catch those magic moments…Thanks again, Sandy NZ Sent from The dark side of the moonOn 21 Apr 2023, at 13:24, Thom Spittle wrote:Hey sandy, I am jumping into this thread to see if I can help. How to set up the In Case of Emergency shortcut on an iPhone
Tap your Shortcuts app to open it.
A menu of your existing shortcuts will appear. ...
Swipe through the top banner until you see "Shortcuts for Accessibility," then tap on it. ...
Select "In Case of Emergency." ...
On the intro page, scroll down and tap "Add Shortcut."

Keep in mind that this shortcut will also text a person of your choice, but I assume this is something you can possibly remove or simply put in your own phone number or a landline which can't receive text messages if you don't want this.

Re: what are good calendar apps

2023-04-21 Thread 'Mervin Keck III' via VIPhone
I use the native Calendar app as well, Richard. On both my iPhone and iPad Pro
as well as my MacBook Pro. I like the way that all three devices sync up
immediately. In fact I also have a watch and that syncs up along with my other
three devices. Nicki, my wife, and I have a shared Calendar in addition to my
other calendars and her four devices and my four devices all sync up
simultaneously when one of us enters something into the shared Calendar. Which
we do often.
I generally have something going daily on the Calendar as well as eight or ten
reminders going in a variety of shared categories. I have both Calendar and
Reminders as complications on my Apple Watch.
I would have a difficult time spending $56 on a third party app when VoiceOver
works so well with the Native apps Calendar and Reminders.

RE: what are good calendar apps

2023-04-21 Thread Dennis Long
My problem with Fantastical besides its $56 a year price is it seems poorly
designed for voice over. It says month picker item. Wonderful after that how
do I find the months? Could you maybe do a demo as a audio file and walk
people through how to use it? It is possible I’m doing something wrong.

I use an app called Fantastical. The developer has made it very accessible with
VoiceOver and it handles events quite well. Also, it includes any reminders you
create and integrates them into the calendar. Apple treats calendar events and
reminders as two different things even if reminders have due dates on them. You
do have to pay a subscription to use Fantastical but I've found it to be worth
that cost. Apple's own calendar isn't terrible either but I've come to
appreciate how good Fantastical is at understanding even really complex events
just by you typing in a sentence like you were explaining the event to someone.
I think it still does a better job at that than Siri does.

Re: initiating a video recording?

2023-04-21 Thread 'Sandy Tomkins' via VIPhone
Sieghard, thanks for all your efforts on this, I'm still failing though… I can find in case of emergency and I can get a sort of set up shortcut that will indicate to all my friends and family and carers and what not that I need help, although that's not what I want, so I said that Home but no where can I find reference to starting off a video, I shall do some googling too…Thanks again, Sandy and ZSent from The dark side of the moonOn 20 Apr 2023, at 17:48, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

I probably set this up at some point in the past and called it "Emergency Video" instead of "In case of emergency" which seems to be what it is called in shortcuts.
, here is a bit about how to find it and below this I am including the link to the full article:

Featured snippet from the web
How to set up the In Case of Emergency shortcut on an iPhone
Tap your Shortcuts app to open it.
A menu of your existing shortcuts will appear. ...
Swipe through the top banner until you see "Shortcuts for Accessibility," then tap on it. ...
Select "In Case of Emergency." ...
On the intro page, scroll down and tap "Add Shortcut."

Keep in mind that this shortcut will also text a person of your choice, but I assume this is something you can possibly remove or simply put in your own phone number or a landline which can't receive text messages if you don't want this.
Hwere is the full article, if you do a Google search for "In case of emergency iOS shortcut" you find a lot of articles about it and I believe there are other shortcuts like it, one is called "I am getting pulled over":

first of all, thank you, I didn't know I had a Shortcuts app, I was just looking in settings… however, after perusing the Shortcuts app, both in Shortcuts and gallery, I can't find reference to anything like emergency video or anything
about a Videos! I wonder if I need to update or anything… Getting there, slowly, thanks for the help thus far, Sandy and Z

if set up correctly you can just say "Emergency Video" to Siri and it will start recording.

RE: Sound Bar Recommendations Wanted

2023-04-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Why would you want a soundbar instead of a set of speakers which would give you
much better stereo sound?
Could you provide an upper price limit, it would really help in making
recommendations

Subject: Sound Bar Recommendations Wanted

Hi, all.

I'm wanting to get a reasonably priced yet good sounding sound bar to use with
my phone.  I don't have a TV, so using my phone and Bluetooth would be the only
way i would be connecting the sound bar.  This would be for mostly music and
DVS content if that helps.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

Lisa

RE: Instructions on how to set up Apple Card high-yield savings account

2023-04-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
