I was very happy with my Asus Zenbook which I bought in 2016, only thing I
didn't like was the keyboard as the layout was not very easy to use with
virtually no spaces anywhere and the Insert/Jaws key not even being double
size as on a regular keyboard. I guess it also depends if you want a small 13
or 14 inch laptop without numeric pad and use the Jaws laptop layout or if you
want a 15-inch with a number pad.
I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad T16 last December and it has a fairly nice keyboard
although I still prefer to use an external full size keyboard, but it's a
pretty nice laptop. Battery is not as good as I thought, however.

I received a reply from Apple Accessibility this morning which
states that they are aware of the issue and they are investigating.
I assume this may have had something to do with the App Store and
certain App Store changes have always been done on the backend and
they are not necessarily connected to iOS itself which would
explain why this is happening with iOS 15, iOS 16.3 as well as iOS
16.4 public beta.
I would think this is something which Apple will fix sooner rather
than later.
As for using screen recognition this still does not work for me
even if I wait 10 seconds or 20 seconds, I have backed out of
subscriptions after turning it on and gone back and it does not
give me anything except what I also see without screen recognition.

Although it wouldn’t be ideal by any means, when I checked just
now, I could turn on screen recognition while in the list of apps
to which I was subscribed, and I could then actually view that
list of applications. I could also double tap on one of the apps
to which I was subscribed, then turn off screen recognition, And
then I could see the option to cancel that subscription if I
wanted to do so.

internal speaker one silent

2019-10-06 Thread Brian Moore
HI all. I have seen references to a bug in IOS 13.1.2 where facetime
calls make voice over go silent. This is slightly different.  no sound
from phone speaker.  If I get a phone call, the speaker works and voice
over announces who is calling and I can answer.

However, after I hang up, the speaker goes silent again and there is no
sound from voice over.  If I plug head phones in, I get sound again.
The speaker isn't broken as it works for phone calls and if I restart
the phone, it works for a minute or two and then is gone again after I
let the phone lock.

Perhaps, this iPhone 6s is on its last legs but I see no compelling
reason to get a new phone.

ability to post live audio on facebook.

I check every update and only option I have is live video and
apparently the options button that is supposed to switch between audio
and video with voiceover doesn’t do anything when you double tap and a
sited friend told me that there is no options button visible.

I wish facebook would allow me to use this feature along with anyone
else who doesn’t have it.

Listening to various Podcasts I think, however, that while they'll no longr have a
3.5mm headphone jack, the upgrade will be incremental. Of course the new A10
processor and improved camera although it would appear that possibly the 7 Plus is
getting a much better camera than the 7. Apparently Tim Cook has said that the
iPhone 7 will have something people won't be able to live without which caused some
comments like "I didn't know it was producing my daily food, air to breath etc.
I also heard that the rumours are Apple maybe working on something drastic for next
year since 2017 is the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone. Speculations are a totally
new form factor, OLED screen which goes from edge to edge with no frame to speak of,
no more home button and instead Touch Id sensor, front camera and all other sensors
embedded under the screen etc. It will be interesting what the 7 will have, but I
could definitely see that Apple will try to come out with something that causes a
Wow factor for a change for the 10-year anniversary.

Hi all. So I have a strange issue with my knfb reader. the recent discussion

I am using it on an iphone 5s 64 gb.

When I do a field of view report, it tells me things.

However, no matter what picture I take, I get no text found. If I turn on
automatic picture mode, it says lense covered once in a while. This would lead
me to suspect that my camera is not working. However, I can take a photo and
there actually is one. Also, why would the field of view report tell me info if
camera was not working.

Is there an issue with this old a phone?

If so, I will consider getting a new one. anyone got a carrier unlocked thing
they want to sell?

Brian.

Hi Michael,

Excuse me if I disagree with your statement that they have made the CBC News
app marvelously accessible.
In fact, I think the CBC News app leaves much to be desired with respect to
accessibility especially in one main area and that is actually reading the
articles which of course happens to be where I would want good accessibility
the most.
It's relatively easy to swipe through the articles although sometimes you get
bounced around in the list a fair bit. After I double tap on an article I can
touch near the bottom of the phone and Voiceover tells me I'm in the Main Body
of the story and it starts reading it. This is where the trouble starts because
I pretty much have to listen to it from start to finish because there is no way
to swipe sentence by sentence or even to turn the rotor to lines and read line
by line. You can do characters and words, but who wants to do words if I want
to check out a passage more closely or look at the spelling of something that
is word 187 of a 200 words story. Furthermore, as Voiceover reads the main
story it also reads links to other stories which is distracting and if for some
reason the reading is interrupted by an incoming text message or push
notification I have to start all over again from the beginning since there is
no way to really stop and start again where you left off.
I can do a 2-finger tap to stop the reading and restart with another 2-finger
tap as long as it's only a few seconds later, but as soon as you wait a bit
longer or some other event happens that does not work.
How often was I listening to a long story and I was 80% done only to have to
start all over and listen to everything again just to hear the last 20%. I have
several times tried to contact the CBC about this, but as far as I can tell
there is no way to leave direct feedback for the development team, you more or
less are limited to going to the website and leave feedback via the contact us
area. I haven't done it in a while since they don't seem to be very interested
in improving the app, once I called them and had the impression that the person
I spoke to couldn't care less. I was just recently considering to get the name
of the head honcho at CBC and to write him a good old traditional letter and,
failing that, maybe submit a story to Go Public and see if they want to
investigate their own ignorance.
One other area that is hit and miss is playing videos which sometimes are part
of a story. I have more often than not come across the link to start playback
and couldn't activate it with Voiceover. I also think that I am not the only
one to complain, the app does not get very good ratings in the app store from
the general public, either.
Maybe you will say that I could always not use it, but I do use it because it
does have the content I want, but consuming that content is in my opinion not a
pleasant experience and despite the fact that the CBC has an official
accessibility statement I would call the CBC News app far from polished when it
comes to accessibility. It's useable which is probably about as far as I would
go at this point.

Sieghard

Re: head to head blindsquare and sendero seeing eye gps

2016-04-06 Thread Brian Moore
well, perhaps I should try seeing eye gps. not sure if it even has maps
for Canada but easy enough to find out. does it store maps off line?
would prefer not as I have a rather large data bucket but it might be
handy. With blind square, the announcement stuff is pretty automatic. I
mostly use it when going somewhere new to keep me clued in on where I
am. Typically, for route planning, I use google maps to get turn by
turn or work out transit things in cities where I have never been.
I have navigon but last time I tried, I couldn't work out how to get
maps properly.

Google Maps and Lyft used to do this as well, but both of those apps
are now running great on my iPhone 6S, so hopefully the same will be
true for Seeing Eye GPS.

Hey Guys,

I am on the opposite side of the coin. I find the Seeing Eye GPS app
much more intuitive for my use. I really love the improvements to the
app with the newest update. The tabs down at the bottom of the app
screen are now all on one level, and for low vision users they have
added some new text and interface color options. Just a note I am not
low vision but my business partner loves the improvements to the low
vision aspect of the app now. I have found the look around features
of The Seeing Eye app to more than adequate. But once again different
strokes for different folks.

Just thought I would throw my two sense into the conversation.

HI all. never tried to do this. So I have a couple of hundred contacts

Hello Brian and all,

The Keys to go is available at BestBuy. I would try it first, the

strictly personal preference. The Logitech k810/k811 is available at

Re: Can anyone recommend a good full-size external bluetooth keybboard that works well with IPad?

2015-09-11 Thread Brian Moore

and where might I find me one of these in Canada?
I baught one of those ones everyone was talking about that could pair
with 6 devices and it was awesome for about two weeks and then z a q and
1 all failed. very odd because tab and caps lock work but left column
of letter keys failed which makes this thing useless and shipping to the
states for an rma with customs fun etc would cost more than the thing
was worth. it cost me 50 bucks canadian.

The speech rate hasn't been changed in the Voice Over settings however,

The automatic language doesn't change automatically on the web as it used to

Minor bugs really, especially when you can go round them as easily as this, but
bugs all the same, and disappointing to find out that something that used to

I haven't had much luck getting either fleksy that I just downloaded

Any info with Fleksy or Fleksy VO under IOS 8X versions would be wonderfully

Julie, in my opinion apple Tv is a lot easier to use netflix with
than anything else. I would even go as far as not using
Crhomecast, and just use airplay to stream music to your apple Tv
from your phone. Netflix is a lot easier layout wise on the apple
Tv. I use it almost daily and it's much easier than most things
out there using the phone. The phone can be used as an apple Tv
controller but it can be a pain to set up and it's almost just
easier to use the Apple Tv controller itself. If you have any
further questions don't hesitate to yell. Thanks and take care.

Julie, in my opinion apple Tv is a lot easier to use netflix with than
anything else. I would even go as far as not using Crhomecast, and
just use airplay to stream music to your apple Tv from your phone.
Netflix is a lot easier layout wise on the apple Tv. I use it almost
daily and it's much easier than most things out there using the phone.
The phone can be used as an apple Tv controller but it can be a pain
to set up and it's almost just easier to use the Apple Tv controller
itself. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to yell.
Thanks and take care.

Hi,

This isn't true 100% of the time. If I tell Siri "Tell Mary I will give
her
a call in an hour." At least for me, most of the time the message is read
back. The times when it isn't, its because VO interrupts it for some
reason. In this case, I place my finger on the screen, and flick to the
edit field and VO reads the message. I find the error rate to be on par
with that found in IOS 6, Maybe a little bit better. But that isn't were
Siri is really giving people a lot of headaches though. Its Siri actually
processing your requests. This failure rate is way up in IOS 7. I would
say its near the levels when it made its debut on the iPhone 4S.

I have found that the error rate is very good in iOS 6. So most of the

by far the most efficient means of knowing if my text is okay.

So, how is the error rate in iOS 7 compared with that of iOS 6? It seems

longer messages is seriously degraded. Yet one more reason to wait.

google maps in general

2013-07-01 Thread Brian Moore
HI all. IF anyone is actually using this thing successfully to get
directions to or from anywhere, I would be interested to hear about it.
A quick step by step walk through of how you set a start and end point
for a route would be helpful. voice directions would be nice but aren't
completely necessary.

if there is a podcast or something I can listen to, am happy to do that
too but have never had any success getting this thing to work.

Brian.

So what did I do incorrectly or can you not get spoken turn by turn
directions using that app or apps on the iPhone 4?

Here is a clue. Have you come across the "speak last spoken direction button"
yet? If not, that indicates that you may be using the previous generation of navigon.

Hopefully this information proves useful to you. Please let us know.

Take good care and I wish you enough.

the quotes). Usually, I have no problem once I start the navigation to get
the voice to announce the turn-by-turn directions. You can get it to repeat
by tapping on the lower left corner where it gives the miles left to the
next WavePoint. I am not sure if this is your concern withNavigon. I just
used it last night to get my husband back on the correct freeway home. HTH.

Hey guys,

I just found this, and it's a unlimited voice, text and data plan with
no contract for $49 per month! It's backed by the T-Mobile network,
which I find has been rolling out 3G coverage for us iPhone users for
the past year. I know here in Portland I've finally gotten to see
this, and it's really been nice. I've been a T-Mobile customer for
five years, but just switched to this new Carrier so I could pay less
and be contract-free. Message me privately if you want help or
questions answered about this one. I guess the thing that gets me, is
that now with these smartphones helping us out so much, a lot of
people don't realize how much of their data plan gets used by things
like GPS, or even object recognition apps, both of which are real
game-changers for us.
Here's the link if anyone wants to check out the service:
http://www.solavei.com/daveleo
And while there is an opportunity to share it with friends and save
even more money on your bill, you by all means don't have to: just
sign up and use the service if you're looking for another carrier,
especially one with unlimited data that doesn't throttle partway
through your month.
I wanted to put this on this list, because I've received so much from
the great apps and tips on here.
On a side note: I checked out iMove this morning, pretty spectacular
if I say so myself! It figured out where I was very very quickly. Even
more quickly than AroundMe does.
Anyway, check the above link out if you or someone you know is looking
to get a better deal or an unlimited data plan.

Thanks,

Dave

Also voice prompts for battery level and maybe even connectivity.
I would also like it to be able to be used like with things like

Someone hear recommended the jabra supreme does that able you to use

What about any of the plantronics models?
I would like this headset or ear piece to have a nice long battery

Re: Is it just me or has the Canadian Yellow Pages app become, well, inaccessible?

2012-10-03 Thread Brian Moore
this is too bad as I used this app a lot and did the update yesterday
without thinking.

let's see if I can put it back.

Brian.

Hi Shawn,

I am in Smithers, BC and also updated not thinking much about it. So I just
had a look and while Voiceover said "What search field" or something like
that, at first I could not activate edit mode with a double tap, I tried the
pass through and nothing worked. I could not even flick left and right,
moving my finger around would read some stuff like Banks, Restaurants,
Shopping etc.

Anyhow, I also saw something about Location and at some point something did
work and the app asked if I wanted to allow Location Services, I did that
and suddenly the search box worked, I tried to type in "Safeway" and it
pulled up the information.

But I must say the app is not as easy to use as before and I'll definitely
send an email to the developers and let them know that they should address
accessibility. I think I still have the old version on my computer and I may
downgrade again since I also used the app quite a bit. There are lots of
other apps for finding businesses, but it was nice to have it for people. Of
course you could always put a shortcut to www.Canada411.com on the home
page, that is also a good site and it's what I use on the computer.

By the way, if you have an iPhone 4S and if you upgraded to iOS 6 you can
now ask SIRI "Show me electronics stores near me" just as an example. SIRI
is now able to do local business searches in Canada.

Sieghard

Hi guys. I was trying to look up electronics businesses to find a cheap
Sirius XM receiver so I had a couple of ideas of stores I would look for. So
anyway, when I was trying to use the Canadian Yellow Pages app, I was unable
to find the search edit box to type in my inquiry. So has anyone from Canada
used the Yellow Pages app successfully? It was accessible before so I don't
know why they took away accessibility in this update.

Comments and thoughts on this are very much welcome, if this is allowed to
discuss here on this list. I don't see the issue when I am paying for apps from
a US account.

Hello List,

When I was in the "Store News" app, Blind Square is on sale until 7/4. What
is the difference between Blind Square and Four Square? They seem like the
same app. Can someone on the list elaborate on this.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Please, I need your help with internet on the iphone.

2012-06-07 Thread Brian Moore

the iphone will use wifi if it is available rather than mobile data.

if there is a connection to wifi, it will use that and only use 3g or
edge if wifi isn't available.

Please, is it possible to set the iphone the way to activate wifi when
it is awailable and when wifi is not available, mobile data would be
activated so I don't have to activate mobile data each time.
Last night when I got back home I somehow forgot turn mobile data off,
but also had wifi activated at the same time. So to which data iphone
had access? Wifi or mobile?
I hope this makes sense and my questions don't sound too sily.
Thank you very much for your help.

HI all. Okay, the faq on their site couldn't be less clear about
this if they tried. can one associate a real magicjack number with
the iphone app rather than the *10 digits* number that you get
automatically?

if so, how do you do it. want to have incomming calls on it too.
