News App Annoyance

2016-07-17 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

When using the native News app on my iPhone 6-plus,Voiceover says "Une the
rotor to access headings" after selecting a story to read and advancing
through it. It happens whenever there is a break in the text like a title,
paragraph, etc.. Using the rotor doesn't seem to help.

Thanks,

Dan

Re: News App Annoyance

2016-07-17 Thread Dan Rathburn

Thanks a lot for the tip. I haven't use the app until recently. I don't know
why using the two-finger flick down gesture didn't occur to me.

Thanks again,

Dan

Hello, Dan.

I don't know what is triggering this gratuitous message nor do I know how to
eliminate it if you are flicking right through a message. However, as you may
have discovered, continuously reading the article via the "two-finger down"
flick will not speak this message. The article will continue uninterrupted
until its end.

Re: Comcast app and audio description???

2016-08-08 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

Try the app called "xfinity TV". I've been playing with it a little and you
do get DBS when it's available. From the main menue, go to Settings then to
accessibility and you'll find where you can toggle DVS on and off. The
listings show whether DVS and Closed Captioning are available. The Channel
picker and Channel Surfer are pretty accessible. The "TV Remote" and the
"X-1 Remote" apps have limited accessibility. Some functions work and some
don't. I usually end up just using the cable box remote.

Hello Dan,

Yes, while one can use a three-finger, swipe-down gesture to change
display pages, it is sometimes necessary to first, touch the screen with
one finger in order to activate focus.

So, when you're ready to scroll down, first, simply single-finger touch
the screen immediately followed by the three-finger, swipe-down gesture.

Uber Newbie Questions

2016-08-24 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

I signed up with Uber yesterday and a couple of questions come to mind.
First, what is the procedure if you just want to find out how much a
specific ride would cost? Also, while I was exploring the app, I noticed
that the app indicated that a driver was 11 minutes away then 9 minutes then
7 minutess. Shortly thereafter, it reported that "No driver available".
Could someone explain this behavior?

Thanks,

Dan

You can go into Settings -> Cellular and turn off cellular data. You can
also turn on airplane mode and then turn on wifi.

My Apple devices don't support wifi calling. I'm worried that I've been

Re: Touch ID on the 6 and 6+?

Hi,

I'm not sure what you're asking but I've had a 6 plus for about a year. I
use Touch I./d. almost every day for banking and shopping and have never had
a problem with it. I have a screen protector and a case that done't
interfere with Touch I.D..

Hello,
So, I know the iPhone 5S and the SE, uses first generation touch ID, and
the 6S uses second. But, what about the 6 and 6+? A quick glance at google
gave no useful information. Thanks in advanced.

Re: A weird issue with Facebook

2016-07-02 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

I rarely use the Facebook app on my iPhone but I do on my Windows 7 laptop.
I am constantly getting emails from Facebook that I have new notifications.
I will log-on to the web site and, lo and behold, there are no new
notifications. Unsubscribing from getting the emails is the only permanent
solution I can come up with. Frankly, I think Facebook does this to
encourage you to log on and view their ads which is how Facebook makes
money. For me, this has been going on for a long time. I wish I had a
solution for you.

Good luck,

Dan

Subject: A weird issue with Facebook

Hello everybody,

I have had a weird problem with Facebook, all day! I don't know what to do
about it. I uninstalled the app, then reinstalled it. I was thinking this
would fix the issue. But it did not.
For some reason, I am told I have notifications. But when I go to the
notifications area, all I see is the heading for notifications, but
nothing else is there. It just shows me message friends newsfeed, and such
things as that.

Is anyone else having the same issue?
Is this a Facebook app issue?
Or is it something with my phone?

I don't know what to think.
Does anyone know how I can fix this issue? It is very annoying!
I think I am one of the rare people, who prefer to use Facebook on the
iPhone, instead of a computer. Give me, for the most part, it is much
easier. Except when you are writing an email with your keyboard, and you
hit enter, sending the message before you were actually done.

As the old saying goes, "Your home is your castle." Now most of us don't
have anything quite so grand or expansive, with driveways rather than
drawbridges and a manicured lawn instead of a moat. But in the same way
those lords of centuries ago had battlements on high and a portcullis over
their entranceway, the security of our home is important to us. Setting up
one more of these Zmodo 720p Mini Wi-Fi Cameras around your home is a quick
and easy, yet reliable, way to keep an eye on any area of the property when
you can't be there in person. It features a 115° wide-angle field of view
and automatic IR night vision up to 16', but where it really stands out is
with the fact that you can monitor the camera remotely via Wi-Fi from a web
browser or from your smartphone or tablet with the free mobile app. You can
share your camera with your family member’s accounts, plus set the camera
for motion-activated recording and receive forwarded alerts when movement is
detected. Last but not least, the built-in speaker allows for two-way talk,
making it also ideal for use as a baby-monitor or for talking to children or
pets when you're out for the evening. Grab this great deal and be much more
in the know about what's happening around your home when you're not there!

Re: manually blocking callers

Hi,

You might try this. Select the Contacts tab in the phone app then double
tap on Add. Create a contact using the phone number you want to block and
add it to your contact list. Open the new entry from the Contacts tab and
swipe down until you hear Block this Caller and double tap it.

Swipe right to "More Information".
Double tap on "More Information".
Go toward the bottom of the screen (or keep swiping right) until you

Double tap on "Block Calls".
I did not go any further to actually block a number. But I expect you

Hi,

If your just interested in listings for real estate for sale or rent, the

Hello Terri,

Yes, there is a marvelously VoiceOver accessible app which you may use.

I will paste in the text of my original post on this app, below my
signature.

This is one of my favorite apps. I use it weekly. The developers are
very careful not to break VoiceOver accessibility and for that, I always
thank them.

Good luck on your search,

Mark

The other day, I was supporting a friend on her iOS device and discovered

to work wonderfully with VoiceOver.

I am going to paste in the link to the free version of the app but there

Subject: Accessible Apps for buying, saling, or even looking for housing?

Hello everyone,

I usually use Craigslist on my laptop, if I want to sale something
locally, or if I want to purchase something. I have even found apartments
this way.

I guess it's been a week since I last went to the site. I went there about
an hour ago, as I would like to find another apartment.

However, the site was strange, and didn't make sense. When I went to view
apartments, I saw all these numbers, instead of links that said 1 bedroom
apartment, and so on. I tried to enter on one of the links. But from what
I could tell, nothing happened. So I am not sure what is going on.

I tell you all this long story for a reason.

Is there an app for Craigslist, that works with the Iphone, or Ipad?

How accessible might it be?

Also, if there isn't an App for Craigslist, are there other accessible
Apps that offer apartment, or roommate listings, as well as other things.
Such as computer stuff, and the like?

I have a sighted friend who uses offer-up, though I know this doesn't have
a housing section.

I tried this on my Iphone a couple of months ago, and unfortunately it
didn't seem accessible at all.

I mainly want a site that will offer a range of housing options, but
more with private landlords. I don't like big management companies.
That's a personal choice.

If anyone has any ideas for me, I would really appreciate hearing from
you.

Thank you,

Terri

A partially sighted coworker wants to know if there is a way she can use her
iPhone like a CCTV, in that she wants either to take a picture of a document
and have it magnified so she can read it from the screen. Or, just have the
camera focus on the document and magnify it, as does a CCTV. I told her I
thought this was possible, but I wasn't sure. She is not wanting OCR, just to
magnify the document. Is this possible, either with the iPhone itself, or with
an app, and if so, what is the name of the app? Thanks in advance for any

Re: iPhone 6S Plus headphone jack

2015-12-05 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

My 6 Plus is about six months old and I usually carry it in my shirt pocket.
I don't use the earbuds much but about two months ago, I tried to plug them
in found that they didn't to be seating properly. I immediately thought
there was something wrong with the jack but it turned out that the jack had
accumulated lint from the pocket. A few swipes with a toothpick cured the
problem.

Just a thought,

Hi all,

Small detail, but I feel like the headphone jack on my iPhones 6S Plus is
a bit loose. On my Mac and my old iPhone 5S, the audio cable really
snapped into place whereas on the 6S Plus the connection doesn’t feel as
secure and is easy to pull out. I haven’t yet compared with another iPhone
6S Plus to check whether there is any difference, but wanted to ask if
others have observed this too.

Thanks!

Re: any neato users out there?

Hi,

According to the Neato Robotics web site, if you're not going to be using the
vacuum for an extended period, you should make sure the battery is fully
charged, disconnect the battery and stor the vacuum in a cool dry place.
Before using the vacuum after it's done hibernating, reconnect the battery and
make sure it's fully charged before using it for the first time.

It has gotten better with more recent iOS 9.3.X versions though.

There's a "Try Erica" button on some screens. The app is behaving as it always
did for me. Good thing, I do all my banking using the app on a 6 Plus.

I hope they come up with a fix for everyone.

It is really a VoiceOver issue not a virtual assistant issue. I think the
suggestion to try turning it off was to see if that helped at all. I could not
find a way to turn it off.
I'd wait to see if they fix the app before using it.
I'm sending a separate message soon about Erica, the virtual assistant.

Headphone Recommendations

2017-03-26 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

I'm looking for recommendations for some noise cancelling headphones to use
with my iPhone 6 plus. I'm particularly intrested in headphones that do
well in dealing with intermittent noises such as dogs barking, car horns and
such. I've never used so I don't know what kind of results to expect.

Thanks,

Dan

Hello,

I don't know if you can search multiple zipcodes but can search by county

Re: A questiom

2017-05-06 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

Try the "Add and Applepay card' feature in the Wallet app. Even if the card
isn't by Applepay, it'll still read the number most of the time. Try Office
Lens or KNFBReader to read the security code on the back of the card.

To my friends who use iPhone apps. Is there an app on your phone that will
read things like a credit card number to you? Or is that just plane too
small? I just got a new card in the mail and I want to write it down so i
can remember it. I have a bill to pay and it's driving me nuts that text
grabber is having trouble reading the card. If there is anything out there
that's better, please let me know.

Hi,

I get pretty much the same deal from Metro PCS for $30 including taxes and
fees. They also use the T-mobile network. They are offering two lines for
$50 a month. Thanks to WIFI, I don't come anywhere near using two gigs of
cellular data a month.

I totally agree that many want the latest and upgrading every year or
every two years is somewhat expensive. Some may argue that they have this
great plan from their provider which lets them upgrade every year, but of
course if you really look at it you will find out that no provider does
this out of the goodness of their hearts and in the end you pay through
the nose for such a privilege. Then there are those who have multiple
smartphones like an Android and an iPhone in order to "stay current with
technology" or to "have the best of both worlds". Also some have multiple
iDevices and to me that is also a waste of money. At one point I decided
to keep my old 5S around and use it at home on WiFi but I quickly realized
that I rarely did and always used my new 6S Plus anyways and while I can
see how the large screen of an iPad is attractive for sighted people, it
doesn't do much for me. I have read messages on here from people who have
a very limited income yet they have an iPhone and an iPad, an Apple TV and
multiple music and TV streaming services and I sort of wonder if they
don't realize that all of this adds up to be a pretty significant cost, at
the same time some of the same people complain about some of the expensive
apps like KNFB Reader or about paying $5 a month for having a Jaws SMA
(it's $120 every two years so it does work out to be just $5 a month which
is half of what most of us pay for Apple Music or Spotify).
I think Deidre does have a point, but unless you are mostly at home where
a landline does the trick and maybe a pay as you go flipphone is enough
for the odd time you go somewhere, I think the additional cost for a
smartphone plan is justifiable considering what a smartphone offers (GPS,
OCR anywhere you go, accessible texting etc.). For anybody who is working
or running a business it is more or less essential nowadays, I need access
to my email, often apps are easier to use than websites when it comes to
making a quick online banking transaction, posting something on Facebook,
tracking a package or even maintaining your profiles for Google My
Business and so on. At times I can actually be away from my business to do
something personal or recreational simply because I am still connected and
able to do something if I have to. In a way it's not so different for a
sighted person with cars. How many couples have a car each, it costs a lot
to buy the thing in the first place and thousands and thousands each year
for insurance, gas, parking and repairs/maintenance. Especially if you
live in the city you could probably get by using public transportation and
take a cab or an Uber when you have to, most of us who don't have sighted
partners who drive do it all the time. But being able to jump into a car
any time you want for a quick trip somewhere is just so convenient. I live
in a rather small town of about 6,000 people, our one local cab company
doesn't even use a meter, they charge $8 for a trip in town no matter if
it's half a mile from the grocery store back to my house or 2 miles from
one side of town to the other. If you do a return trip inside I think an
hour or hour and a half then it's $11 for both. My wife is sighted but has
epilepsy so can't drive either and we spend maybe $1,000 a year on cab
rides for times when the weather is bad, we have more than we can or want
to carry etc. If we owned a car I'd spend that alone on insurance let
alone buying gas, new tires or dividing the initial purchase price by the
lifespan of the vehicle.
Interestingly enough people often buy used cars, sometimes cheap old
beaters but few of us buy a used iPhone that is 2 years old even though in
many cases it would do the trick as well and it would save you a fair bit
since it is much cheaper to buy and you could get any post-paid or
pre-paid plan you want since no carrier can ask you to sign up for a
2-year contract on some expensive plan.

Sieghard

Hi,

Actually, I tapped on the offending message and, under 'Details', I saw that
'Hide Alerts' was toggled 'on'. I toggled it to 'off' and 'Muted' was gone.
How it got toggled to 'on' for this one individual is a total mystery.
Thanks for the reply.

Mike,

I think whether an SE 2020 can be ordered with a carrier SIM card from the
Apple Store might be a function of the type of plan you have with your carrier.
I have ordered from the Apple Store in the past while I had a Verizon postpaid
plan and received my new iPhone with a Verizon SIM card already installed.
However, I switched to a Verizon prepaid plan in late February and when I tried
ordering my SE 2020 last Saturday using the Apple Store app, I received an
error message when I attempted to complete the order when the app went to
Verizon to verify my account info. I was unable to complete the Apple Store
order unless I selected no carrier as my choice which included no SIM card.
I'll simply move my Verizon SIM card from my iPhone 8 to my SE 2020 after I get
it set up and ready to make calls. As I understand it, this will also avoid any
new device activation charge from Verizon which they tried to charge me when I
went from my iPhone 7 to my iPhone 8.

The SIM card has to be a Nano Sim; if the phone is that very old, it probably
won't fit.

You'd have to call Apple or do some web search on the model you have to find
out the size of the sim.

And you will need to go through your carrier to get the SIM card.

Subject: RE: accessible measuring app?

I have been doing woodworking for 20 years and I absolutely agree that a Click
Rule or talking tape measure are absolutely essential if you want to do stuff
with any degree of accuracy.

There is also the Rotomatic (not sure if I spell this correctly), it is
somewhat the same concept as a Click Rule, but I believe instead of pulling out
a threaded rod which then makes a click every sixteenth of an inch the
Rotomatic works by the user turning a stop along a threaded rod and it can give
you accuracy down to a 1/64 of an inch whereas the imperial click rule is
accurate to 1/16 of an inch and the metric click rule is accurate to 1mm which
is better than a sixteenth, but not quite as good a 1/32.

Having said this, 1/16 is adequate in a lot of situations and 1mm is of course
even better.

The Cobalt talking tape measure if set to imperial is also accurate to 1/16 and
if set to metric it is 1mm. I like the fact that you can include the length of
the housing in your measurement if, for example, you want to measure the inside
of a cabinet or drawer, you can also measure something and push a button to add
that measurement to memory, then measure the next item and add it and so on and
in the end push a button to get a total. This can be handy if you do things
like baseboard trim, they usually come in 16 foot length so I could go and
measure several walls and add up each measurement until I get close to 16 feet
and this way I can minimize waste. The Cobalt can also be set to read out in
inches, feet and inches, e.g. 25 inches or 2 feet 1 inches, on the metric side
you can do metres, centimetres or millimeters, e.g. 1 metre and 10 centimetres
can also be read as 110 centimetres or 1,010 millimetres. I assume that Tape
King can maybe do the same, but I don’t know. Max, could you contact me
off-list as I’d love to learn more about Tape King.

I have both a couple of Cobalt tape measures, I have I think 4 imperial click
rules and 1 metric because when I am really working on a larger project I often
will use 2 or 3 at the same time, e.g. if I want to measure how far away from
the edge of a sheet of plywood the rail of my track saw is especially if I am
cutting along the 8 foot length of the plywood, it is much better to have a
click rule on each end than to run around with a single one.

There is absolutely no way an app is going to be accurate enough for any sort
of good woodworking and I highly doubt you would see a single professional and
sighted woodworker use an app like the Measure app over a tape measure even
though they could probably use it with much better precision in terms of lining
up start and end point. The fact is that if you want to do any sort of
woodworking it will be an expensive hobby.

Lastly, don’t forget the usefulness of setup blocks/bars like these:

15 piece setup bar set

This 15-piece set is one of the most complete and best I have found, I also
have a couple of smaller 5 or 6 piece ones which you can get in metric or
imperial and if I know I want to rip a 2 inch strip off something on my table
saw or I want to set the height on my router bit to half an inch than using the
appropriate setup bar is way easier than trying to set the table saw fence with
the click rule.

Hello,

Try "rentals". It's a companion to the "realtor.com" app. They're accessible
once you learn their minor quirks.

Happy househunting,

Hi, can anyone recommend a good accessible iOS app for searching for
rental properties? Or, if you know of good services with accessible
websites, that would be great as well. Thank you in advance.

Re: The S E 2020?

2020-09-12 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

I went from a 6 Plus to the 2020. I quickly got used to smaller form factor
and the performance has been good. Just get a good case for it. With the
glass back, it's a slippery little devil. The lack of a separate earbud jack
is annoying but not a deal-breaker. touch ID has been very reliable and I
got uded to the new home button without difficulty. I've been happy with the
decision to upgrade.

Dan

Re: Recommendations for Real Estate Apps

2020-09-12 Thread Dan Rathburn

I haven't had to deal with those parameters so didn't notice that
accessibility had been broken. A bit of a work-around is to go into
'property type' and deselect any you're not interested in and go to 'Number
of bedrooms and bathrooms' and reset to zero. Select the price range as
usual. Not ideal but it makes the results more managable. I've sent feedback
to the developer about the issues.

Hi, I've found the realtor.com app has lost some accessibility. I cannot
change things like number of bedrooms or baths. Also changing the distance
for a commute.

Anyone having these issues?
