App for Capturing VoiceMail Messages Left on iPhone?

2014-10-01 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I don't own an iPhone myself, but am asking for a friend who does. Is there
an app that can be used to transfer voice-mails from the iPhone to the PC
without having to listen and record each individual message?

Thanks,

Dani

How To Get a BARD Book from my iPod to my Computer

2014-08-08 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

How do I get a book that I downloaded from BARD via the Wishlist on the
mobile app to my PC?

We're in for a hurricane on Sunday and a tropical storm before that. I'm
thinking I won't have access to the 'Net-at this point it's horribly slow,
so I can't download anything from BARD. But I have my current read on my
iPod and am thinking I can use my NLS player to read as well, but don't know
how to reverse the process.

Thanks,

Dani

Manually Adding Movies through iTunes

Hi, Everyone.

How do I manually add a movie to my iPod Touch 4th gen using iTunes? It's a
school thing I pulled off the 'Net, not something I purchased on DVD.

RE: downloading books with the bard mobile app?

2014-01-25 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi.
Look for a button to add the selection to your Wish List. Do this for all
the books you want to put on your phone. Then go to your Wish List and
download the books from there. I think double tapping on the book from there
will start the download process.

I usually use iTunes to add the zipped files from my computer's hard drive
to the bookshelf in the app, so I'm hoping I didn't miss any steps in
answering your question.

Best,
Dani

Hi,

Amazing Slow Downer can do this. It can also change the speed and pitch of
the file, which might be helpful in an arranging class. I haven't done much
with it, but it seems quite accessible.

Brian, I believe Chuck has already posted a link to the ZeroTap app. I
apologize for including a space between Zero and Tap in my first message
because doing so can mess up the search for it.

ZeroTap is a combination website and app. When you go to the website, you
can click a link to go to what they call the Magic Box and input text at
your computer keyboard. When you launch the ZeroTap app on your iDevice, the
text entered into that Magic Box is automatically synced to your iDevice
where it can be copied and pasted to any other app.

Changing Location for Native Weather App

2014-01-05 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

When I got my iPod Touch, I was living in Honolulu. I'm still on the same
island, but in a different city. How do I change my location so I can be
sure I'm getting the conditions tracked for my location in the weather app.
For example, it says 75 degrees is the high in Honolulu today, and that
it'll be 64 tonight, but it might not be the case for where I'm at.

Thanks for any Suggestions,

Dani

RE: Curious ... Has Anyone Had Any Issues with BARD Today?

2013-12-26 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi.
I tried everything you suggested except for turning the router off and back on
again before sending my query to the list, and I also tried resetting my iPod
Touch; nothing worked. I ended up deleting the app and reinstalling it. My
husband looked at the screen and said the download was stuck at 75 percent and
that the progress bar wasn't moving, and that the book couldn't be erased. So
he deleted and reinstalled the app for me. I can download books again with no
problem. *crosses fingers*

But I'll keep your suggestion for restarting the router in mind for next time.

Thanks,
Dani

I just downloaded a 54 hour book and four minutes. You might want to check your
Internet connection. I would start by removing the Bard application from the
app switcher and then try it again. If that doesn't work. You can turn off your
phone and turn it back on then attempt to do it again. If all else fails, you
can turn off your router. Then turn it back on after 10 seconds or so. Then
give it another shot.

Thanks for sending these steps. I was just going to ask how to purchase gift

Sill go try them out, and will ask if anything isn't clear.

Brian, I'm running iOS 6.1.4 so I'm not sure if the below will work the same
in iOS 7 but here's what I do:

1. Open the Featured tab in the Apps Store.
2. The screen presents a swarm of icons for the various featured items which
are grouped by heading. If you have the rotor set to headings, you can
single finger swipe up and down to move among the headings.
3. I find the easiest way to get to a button or control at the bottom of a
multi-screen page is to put my finger on the leftmost button on the bottom
row which is the selected Featured button in this case. When you swipe left
once from this position, you will be moved to the last control on the page.
4. The control you get to after that first swipe left is Terms and
Conditions. The second swipe left takes you to your Apple ID. The third
swipe left is Send Gift. The fourth swipe left is the Redeem control you
seek.

Good luck.

The easiest way I've found to find that button is to highlight the featured
tab, and then swipe left a few times. You'll get to it very easily doing it
that way.

Yes I can be done, by the way your subject is very confusing. Because in
your subject you're referring to text tone and then your body of your email
you're wanting to send yourself an email via your PC to save the toners
changed. The only way that you may want to tell the tone is changed, would
be if you change the one that says mail Undersound's and settings. If you
change your text tone, you need to get somebody to send you a iMessage with
a nether I device or a Mac.

You can either enter them manually, or go into settings, general, keyboards,
add keyboard, and select the emoticons keyboard. Change keyboard will then
be to the left of the space bar.

RE: Best PDF reader?

2013-12-12 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Brian.
I wasn't sure, either, but you can search on Applevis and the iOS review and
link to it in the Apple Store comes up. I haven't tried it myself, but am
pondering doing si, since I need to find something that lets me access both
.txt and .pdf docs.

More Later,
Dani

Hi all,

I frequenntly have to access large PDFs. In the native reader, if
you move to another app while reading a PDF and then return to the PDF it
seems it takes you back to the beginning of the document. This is
frustrating when you're in a 600 pade PDF and have to scroll to find where
you were. I've also tried the adobe Reader for iOS but it seems to have
it's own limitations as well, reading an entire page at a time as opposed to
say, a single paragraph on a page. Has anyone had better results with other
apps?

Thanks,

todd

iTunes File Sharing Mostly Miss

2013-12-08 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I was missing the last, all important step re adding Bard books through
iTunes: hitting the Sync button. I was following instructions from
can't-remember-where and didn't hit the Sync button because there was
nothing in the directions about doing that. I'm new to file sharing; I know
you can do it, but haven't had a reason to try it till now. It didn't click
that iTunes was the link between the computer and the iDevice, that I have
to sync/give the OK for the transfer to the iPod via iTunes.

But . I've only been able to download _one book. I tried replicating the
steps and haven't been successful. I get the three tone chime from iTunes
that seems like a sync happened, and the Documents portion of the Bard
Mobile app is blank. But no doorbell on Berd Mobile's end.

Are there any settings I should be looking at?

Thanks,

Dani

I live in Chicago and use the T-Mobile prepaid $30 a month plan that I
described in my article on iPhone on the cheap. I have an iPhone 5 from
December 2012, before Apple supported the AWS band. I regularly obtain
download speeds of 10 Mbps and upload speeds 700 to 900 Kbps.
Sometimes my upload speeds are one Mbps. When I visit family in northern
Indiana, the iPhone falls back to 2G EDGE speeds that are only two to three
times as fast as a dial-up internet connection. By next spring or summer,
T-Mobile said that all cell towers will be refarmed to HSPA+ and/or LTE,
making this a non-issue.

Call quality is excellent and very clear. My calls are much clearer than on
a friend's iPhone 5 with AT&T. With the $30 a month plan T-Mobile says that
five Gb of data is at LTE speeds and speeds are reduced to EDGE when five GB
of data is used in a month. I listen to iTunes radio, TuneIn and download
two or three talking books from NLS each month and I don't even chew up one
megabyte of data.

Okay, now I understand! The wishlist was working for me last time I tried it
but not now. So that's a system problem apparently with NLS.

I'm doing a transfer on dropbox so I can give you all the steps.

1. Put the zip file in your dropbox folder on your computer. Make sure it
has time to have uploaded into dropbox.

open dropbox on your device. If your zip file doesn't show up there, just
wait; eventually it will.

3. Find the zip file. Double tap it. Then wait till the progress says 100%.

4. Double tap share.

5. Double tap "open in".

6. Double tap open in bard mobile.

The bard mobile app will open but will still not show the new book. This
time I just left it open and and after a couple of minutes I got an alert
that said the request had timed out. This may or may not happen to you.
Remember the book has to do more than just be in the app; it has to be
authorized which means the server is being contacted if I understand
correctly.

7. Go out of the app. I didn't remove it from the app switcher; I just
pressed the home button on my phone and then pressed the home button twice
to get back into the app switcher and found the bard mobile app and double
tapped on it.

I think it might have still said 5 audiobooks but as I flicked through the
books, I found my new one. Then I checked again and it did say 6 audiobooks.
Order of this may vary.

Hth.

2013-12-07 Thread Dani L Pagador
Right now the app Wishlist is out of commission, so I can't add the books I
need that way. That was how I got the books that were on my shelf.
The only other way that I know to get the books to my iPod Touch is by
downloading them to my PC, then file sharing, whether it's through Dropbox,
Ubidisk, or iTunes.

iTunes has been a bust, but one of my specialties is beating dead horses.

Ubidisk gets me halfway there i.e., it's on the iPod, but I can't figure out
why the app isn't seeing it. There isn't any progress bar or chime, and yes,
I'm being patient and waiting, and have made sure everything that needs to
be opened is open.

Dropbox is the newest thing I'm trying, especially since after reading the
info on the site, it seems that it'd be more than just handy for downloading
books.

That's my story ...

Still Stuck,

Sorry, I know I must be missing a piece of information, I am totallyh
baffled by what you are doing. If I am understanding this right, you already
have books in your bookshelf in the bard app so you know that works. You
seem to be jumping from UbiDisk to dropbox to iTunes trying to transfer
books. You actually should be able to do this. But if you can't, why not
just add the books you need to your wishlist either using your computer or
your iPod and then download them directly in the Bard app since you know
this works. I'm sure there is a piece of this I must be missing but it seems
to me that you are taking a lot of time and effort to do something that can
be easily done without having to transfer. What am I misunderstanding here?

Is there a reason why you don't just use dropbox? I have to be sure to use
the zip file rather than the unzipped folder and I have to do share and then
I think more actions and open with. But once I do that, the book appears in
my audiobooks bookshelf. I do find that I have to then either go out of the
app or go back and then go into the bookshelf again for my book to appear. I
confess I'm not familiar with UbiDisk so I assume there's some reason you
are using this instead of dropbox. I did look up UbiDisk and I don't really
see any reason why it shouldn't work. Is anybody doing this specifically
with UbiDisk and having it work? I guess that would be the first thing to

RE: Can't get BARD Transfer to Open from UbiDisk

2013-12-06 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Rob. Yes, the books are zipped. I've tried closing the Bard app, then
reopening it. Still only 15 books. I've got lots of free space on my iPod
Touch, so am always up for adding more books.

Thanks,
Dani

Can't get BARD Transfer to Open from UbiDisk

Hi, Everyone.

Subject line says it all. I've managed to download books in to the folder in
the UbiDisk app. I see the files there, go to the Action button under More
Info, and choose the BARD app to open the file. The app opens, but my book
doesn't show up on the shelf e.g., I've got 15 books, (added through the app
itself), and now with this transfer should have 16 .

What am I missing?

Editing Notes between iPod and Outlook 2010?

2013-11-07 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I'm using an iPod 4th gen and have it synced with Outlook 2010.

If I use the Notes application on the iPod Touch to begin a note, can I edit
it using a PC keyboard in Outlook 2010? When I look at the folder for the
account, I can see the notes I've taken that have transferred over from the
iPod Touch, can open them, and read them with JAWS. But I don't seem to have
the ability to add anything to the notes using the PC keyboard. Is this a
true thing, or just a glitch on my end that I need to figure out how to work
through, assuming there's a solution?

Thanks,

Dani

RE: bard mobile still giving me grief

2013-10-18 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi.
Anna from Bard Tech Support sent me the following regarding transfer of
books via iTunes to my iPod Touch fourth gen and my inability to play them
after transfer during the shut-down.

"Be sure your iPod Touch has access to the Internet the first time you try
to play a book or magazine that you transferred to the app via iTunes. BARD
Mobile needs to download an authorization file for each audio book or
magazine you listen to, so when you try to play a book for the first time,
it needs to get the file.

Also, if you haven't tried this since the shutdown, please try again, as
there were some problems with BARD during the shutdown that have been
resolved since."

I haven't gone to get any books lately, but will keep this handy. I know
that during the shut-down when I went to the BARD site and added books
through the Wish List, things transferred and played as usual; but I didn't
have that same luck then when I transferred either via iTunes or Ubidisk.

The authorization is done automatically when you go to play the book.
You won't notice anything unless there's a problem verifying the
authorization.

Deleting Books from BARD Mobile?

2013-10-04 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

Is there a way to delete books from the BARD Mobile app? I had to add the
books I wanted to download to my Wish List from the site, then download them
using the app. Now I have to delete the duplicates that I put in using
iTunes and file sharing earlier this week. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dani

P.S. Is there a user list for the app, so I don't clutter this one up with
all my questions?

He said that he had an iPod. So, no, there is no way to use it when you
don't have an internet connection.
When I say "use it" that means download books. You can still listen to the
content that you have already put on the device.

Where do Bard Books go after being Added?

2013-10-02 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

Thanks for answering my question about how to add books using iTunes. I
managed to follow the directions, but can't find the books on my iPod.

When I open the Bard Mobile app and choose the Audiobook tab from the
bookshelf, it shows only four books. When I try to add the books I think
should be there but aren't, I get asked whether I want to replace the file
that's already there-I'm using zipped files downloaded from the website.

Thanks as always for clarifying,

Is Anyone Using the Chime App?

2013-07-02 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I downloaded the Chime app this afternoon and can't figure out how it works.
Is anyone on list using it? Is there documentation I can read to help me
work out how to use it?

Thanks,

RE: Can an iPod with a Reciever Use GPS apps?

Hi.
I'm behind on messages and am slowly waiding through things. Just saw this
one and need to ask whether you need a data plan for the iPod Touch to be
able to be used with a receiver.
Thanks,

If a person buys a GPS app that downloads the maps to the device like
Navigon or Tom Tom, then an iPod Touch can be used for GPS.
I believe there are two or three blue tooth GPS receivers now that work with
iDevices. I have not seen or used any of them.
Duel Electronics and BadElf are two I remember discussions about a year or
more ago.
amazon sold them both and I'm thinking there is another, but I can't
remember the name.
I'd suggest a search on Amazon for blue tooth gps receiver and Apple to see
what is currently there.

RE: searching the app store

2013-04-28 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Ray.
Look for the app on your iPhone specifically called App Store.
There are five tabs to single-flick-left/right through at the bottom of the
page: Featured, Top Charts, Genius, Search, and Updates. Double-tap on the
Search tab. Wait a few seconds, then flick to the left to get to the Edit
field. Type in what you want. It takes a few seconds for the search to
happen. I think you have to flick to the right to get to the results list,
then flick up or down to read through the results--sometimes there can be
hundreds, so it might help to look for the app using the developer name
instead of the app name. Double tap on the result you want to look at.
Again, go to iblindtech.com; not sure what the podcast number is there, but
I think there may be something on
using the app store.

Dani

What I have tried to do is use the ITunes application to search for the apps
I am looking for without success to find them I ended up going to either
itunes.com or the providers website to find the app. I suspect this is
neither a simple or smart way to do this How is it done if it can be done
through the app?

Locking Orientation was RE: searching the app store

2013-04-28 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Ray.
Try Podcast 14 from Garth Humphreys at www.iblindtech.com. I'm assuming what
you want to do is lock the screen so it stays in portrait mode? The podcast
gives clear instructions for how to do this, and Garth had VO on so you can
hear what happens as he goes through the process and you follow him with
your iPhone and VO on on your end.

I have the book that said I am unable to make certain things happen such as
locking orientation even though to the best of my understanding I am doing
it by the book. Only finding dismiss app switcher for example not finding
any way to lock the orientation even though the book says I should be able
to do just that.

Ray, may I suggest a book to you? It is called "Getting started with the
iPhone by Anna Dresner and Dean Martineau. It is available in several
formats from the National Braille Press. I suggest this book because if you
had read it before you received your phone or had it when your phone
arrived, many, many, many, many of the multitude of questions which you have
posed to the list in the last three weeks or so could have been answered
without having to send what I figure to be somewhere near 200 messages to
the list. I am not suggesting that you not ask questions, only that you give
some thought to making use of a resource which is easily available to you
and save the difficult questions for the list.

Hello,

The "Make Eggs" button is there, but it can only be found after you have
mixed the eggs. After you have dragged the eggs and milk into the boal, the
app will ask you to "Touch and swirl to mix." Make sure VO is focused on the
boal, then double tap and hold. When VO says "Mixing," move your finger in a
circuler motion, keeping it firmly pressed to the screen. VO will anounce
when the eggs are ready to cook. This is when you will be able to find the
button to cook them. It will not appear until these steps have been
followed. Note that this is a common feature of Maverick apps.

RE: App for storing Usernames and Passwords

2013-03-15 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Sieghard.
$20 is really reasonable, especially for all that the app does. Does it just
handle passwords, or does it let you enter info like account numbers, etc?.
I'll definitely consider your suggestion.

Hi Donnie,

I use Roboform Everywhere on several PC's and my iPhone.

Your passwords are stored on the secure Roboform server and are, of course,
encrypted there so even a Roboform employee couldn't actually see them.

The service is $20 a year, but this gives you the licence to install on as
many devices as you want and your passwords will sync automatically. For
example, if you had it on a PC and your iPhone and you add a password on the
PC, it will sync to the cloud and you can then sync on your iPhone and it
gets the latest updates from the server.

You might want to search the archives for things like password or password
manager, others on the list use other apps and have their reasons. Many want
a free app, I personally have to sync between at least 3 or 4 computers at
my business and my laptop and iPhone and I don't mind paying $20 a year for
a service that works and gets good ratings. I'm sure others are good, but
Roboform is what I have had for years and I have never found a reason to
change it.

The app is nicely accessible and you can set a PIN for the app in addition
to having to use your master password so nobody can even get into the app.
Only thing is that with the current version for some reason it seems that I
can't access password protected SafeNotes, but I am working with Roboform to
fix that.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: apps useful to a student but not in college, please?

Hello everybody,

Hope you are having fun wherever you are. I am looking for apps that can be
useful to me as a student but I am not in college yet. Far away from
college I am starting to rely more on my brilliant and awesome iPod and
I might even get an iPhone 5 for my birthday!!!
So, I want apps that can be useful to me such as like something that I can
write down my homework and it can remind me is the one I am looking for the
most since I get and I mean a lot of homework... So, I want apps for school
useful to a student. Homework like thing and callendar app to keep track of
my activities and clubs for school, and really anything useful you use as a
student or any student you have in your life use. Note: I do prefer it to
be free and obviously accessible with vo. Thank you very much for your
help. Have a nice day, everyone.

Word Ladder: What Happens when you have two clues?

2013-03-01 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

How should I approach gameplay when I have two clues/answers per question in
Word Ladder?

The game for February 21 is called Siamese Regions of Belgium. The question
seems to require two answers, and I can't figure out how to iput them. The
game doesn't like when I put a space in to separate the answers.

Has anyone worked this particular puzzle? If so, how did you approach it?

Thanks,

Dani

Question about AnyList app

2013-02-24 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I was thinking of getting the AnyList app because of its ability to update a
list from different iThings.

If I'm understanding it right, all the iThings being used have to have the
AnyList app loaded on them. But do the iThings have to have the same Apple
ID connected to them to be able to see and update a list? My husband has an
iMac and an iPod Touch, and I've got an iPod Touch. If I compose the list on
my device, will he be able to see it on his things?

Thanks,

RE: Help Needed Editing Text with Rotor

2013-02-24 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi again, Alan.
Put a space between the first and second thing in the field you're at.
Make sure your rotor is set to Words, then double-tap to get yourself to
either the start or end of the field.
Set to rotor to Edit, then swipe up or down to find the Select option and
double-tap it. VO will tell you what's been selected.
Swipe up or down to find the Cut option and double-tap it. VO will confirm
that text was cut.
Swipe left or right to get to the field where you want to paste. If you're
still in Edit mode, swipe up/down to find Paste, then double-tap that. Your
text should be pasted.
I think I've got it about right. Garth Humphrey has a podcast on the rotor
at www.iblindtech.com; David Woodbridge has one on www.applevis.com as well.
The rotor isn't bad. It's the blasted pinch out to select/pinch in to
deselect thing that's a pip.

Dani

I really need some specific instructions on how to edit text using the
rotor. I've had quite a few occasions where I've been entering text such as
a user name and password and neglected to move the focus to the next field
before entering the next entry. So I end up with the user name and password
mashed together in the user name field or I end up with the phone number I'm
texting to and the text message mashed together in the send to field.

I know it's possible to use the rotor to highlight the second field's text,
cut it, and then paste it to the proper field but I need specific
instructions on how to do this. I've tried getting the rotor set to edit,
then swiping up and down to get to select but once I've done this, I've no
idea how to mark the text I want to select. I feel like I've got the general
concepts down but I can't quite figure out the specific steps to highlight,
then cut and paste. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone can recommend a good podcast on using the rotor, I'll gladly
download it and study it.

Hi, Alan.
Do you have a braille display? If yes, that would make selecting a lot
easier.I'll wait for your reply about the braille display before I start
rambling about the rotor. But you may want to read up on cursor movement
before you start fighting with text selection. A great article is at
www.blindhow.com; it's called Tips on editing text using the onscreen

RE: Correction on keyboards

2013-02-17 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Iona and Reggie.
I missed the beginning of this thread, so am not sure if I'm guessing right
when I think you're having trouble with the onscreen keyboard?
My husband used Removable Tape made by 3M (It doesn't leave residue when you
take it off, and doesn't tear, for example, the paper you stick it to when
you need to remove the tape); he put it across the top and bottom borders of
my iPod Touch, and also across the onscreen keyboard--the top edge of the
strip is aligned with the top edge of the keyboard. This way I can use the
onscreen keyboard and know where it is in relation to the top part of the
screen where the text is. Before the tape was put down, I'd inadvertently
stray in to the portion of the screen where the Edit field was and cause all
sorts of unwanted stuff to happen. Having the tape down makes it easier to
use the touch screen. And the tape doesn't interfere with gestures, so
thatps a definite plus.

HTH,
Dani

P.S. There's a really helpful article in the Technology section of
www.blindhow.com about cursor movement in iOS. It helped solidify my
understanding of how the cursor works in edit fields.

Hi again,

I found a solution that is not ideal but good for people like me, bad with
spelling and using alternative input methods in my Case Braille-Touch.
It is an app that you put the text in by pasting and perform a spell-check.
It is at times a bit slow but I fine it useful. It is called "Touch-type"

going to words or lletters and fixing from there. If there is another way,
I am certain someone will write it for both of us.

RE: how to use the item chooser, complete instructions

Subject: how to use the item chooser, complete instructions

Hi, Here are complete instructions for the item chooser.
The item chooser lists and filters all items on the screen and is most
useful on web pages or apps with large lists of content.
To open the item chooser, do a double finger tripple tap, or press space
plus I on a braille display, or control option I on a bluetooth keyboard.
The contents of the screen will display as a list with a search box on top.
This search box should auto focus and allow you to start typing a string,
but sometimes you have to double tap it to start typing depending on the
peripherals you have connected.

Slowly begin typing in the edit box. As you type each letter, focus will
return to the edit box. This is why it's a good idea to take it slow.
As you type a string, all items that don't contain that string will
disappear. For example, if you are looking for jonny appleseed, typing jon,
app, or see will find jonny appleseed.
As you type, voiceover should report the number of items left in the
chooser.
When the number is something you can live with, flick right from the search
box. This is one reason why focus is set there after each letter you type.
Another is I suppose that the screen keeps refreshing and changing and the
search box is a good point of reference.
When you find the item you want, listen for an extra beat and voiceover will
tell you where on the screen the item is located so that you can try and
find it without the item chooser next time. This is particularly useful on
the IPad which has so much real-estate that sometimes you use the item
chooser just to keep from having to grope around the screen all day.
Double tap the item and voiceover will set focus there.
you can then take whatever action is required such as double tapping if the
item is a link or a button, or read from current position if you are in the
middle of an article.

hope this helps and isn't too verbose. i'm sort'a enjoying my friday night.
:)

The way standard typing works, is that you double tap on a letter to input
it. With touch typing, you slide your finger around to the letter you want,
then lift your finger.

Subject: Re: Accessible crossword game

Although not a crossword game per se, there is a game called WordLadder by a
company called Sporcle which is quite accessible.

They've recently released an update that labeled much of the elements, and
it's free, if you want to wait for a single puzzle per day, or purchase a
game pack for $4.99. This particular game pack contains 500 puzzles, but
initially when you download and install the game/app, you get about 7 to 10
days worth of puzzles for free, at which point, once the free puzzles are
completed, you can do them again, wait for another puzzle to come around the
next day, or purchase a game pack and have 500 puzzles to choose from, while
still getting your puzzle a day option, in other words, you're not relegated
to just the 500 puzzles.

The game is quite simple.

You're given a theme for the puzzle such as celebrities, Don't Wait, which
was today's puzzle, or a host of other themes, then you're given a series of
clues and you're supposed to fill in the answer to the clues, but the
answers are single words, between 4 and six letters, and each word is one
letter off from the previous word.

For example...

Clue=4 letter word

1. Number preceding five=four
2. Fill a glass=pour
3. destitute or penniless=poor
4. This gives you access to a place=door 5. A ponzie or victim of a
scam=doop 6. Fall from a height=drop

That is basically the way to play the game.

To fill in an answer, you double tap the clue, and simply type in the
answer.

Unfortunately, there are occasional games/puzzles that don't tell you the
number of letters in the clue, but scrolling through the clues will usually
yield an answer that gives you a precise answer to give you an idea of the
letter count in each answer.

You can either play with a timer, where you have a limited amount of time to
answer all of the clues, or you can play in a timeless puzzle, meaning while
the timer is going, there is no time limit and so you can take as long as
you want to play the puzzle,or time yourself to see how long it takes you to
complete the puzzle.

There are sound events that tell you when an answer is correct or not. If
an answer is correct, you'll get a pop sound. If the answer is incorrect,
you get no sound event at all, and so must delete the letters you input and
start entering the letters again, but be aware that if you're filling in an
answer where only the last letter is incorrect, you can simply delete that
last letter, and type in the replacement. This goes for all the letters as
there is an edit field just above the keyboard that gives you access to the
answer you're typing in.

There is a quit button, at which point you're given the option of continuing
the game, resuming the game at a later time, or quitting altogether. When
you quit the game altogether, you're given the answers and can scroll
through them as you see fit. Once the puzzle is complete or quitted, there
are three buttons at the bottom that give you the option of doing the
previous puzzle, re-doing the current puzzle, or doing the next puzzle in
the pack.

I would say that 95% of the game is accessible, and the 5% that is not
accessible is the labeling of a few elements, but the game play area with
the timer, correct answers to total answers and the edit field and clue area
are completely accessible.

When you first start the game, you're taken to a screen where you can choose
to start playing or view more games by the company. Double tapping the Play
button, which is clearly labeled takes you to the second screen where you
have the option of selecting between playing the latest released games, in
other words, the daily puzzle component, or playing one of the packs you've
purchased. there are a few elements on this page that are not clearly
labeled, such as the buttons, but directly after each button is the button
label which is tappable, so one does not have to double tap the button
itself in order to make your option, one can double tap the label to choose.

Once you double tap your option, you're taken to the third page with the
list of puzzles, though these are simply labeled 1, 2, 3 and 4 and so on.
You have to double tap the number and check the theme on the next page. The
daily puzzle component, however, is labeled with dates instead of numbers,
though each date is only given the theme on the next page, much like the
game packs.

The game packs themselves are not themed, to my knowledge, and only the
various puzzles are themed, so don't purchase game packs based on any theme
you may like, but as the game packs are not labeled, just labeled as game
pack orange, or some such thing, I

Hi, Maria.
Bop It is great. I have the Hasbro handheld game and was playing it tonight.
There's a podcast, I think, on the Applevis site. Basically you bop, flick,

I haven't downloaded the app myself, but will as soon as I can figure out
what's happening with me and the app store since I upgraded to IOS6.1.
Sudoku4All is pretty fun, too, but I need to work the puzzle with a braille

Happy Playing,

 Dear listers
Does anyone know of an accessible iOS crossword game. By this I’m
afraid I don’t just mean one where you need to roam around the grid
with your finger to ascertain where the blanks and clues are etc,
but rather one that I suspect is specifically designed for blind
users. I’ll explain – I would like a game that allows you to browse
up and down the list of clues (perhaps in two columns – one for
down clues and one for across) and each time you hear something
like “13 down. Type of medieval dagger commonly used in Scotland. 4
letters. Blank, blank, blank, blank” All these elements are spoken
thus giving you all the info you need to proceed.
 When
you already have some of the letters it would say the same first
part of the phrase but the last part would now be “Blank, I, blank,
 K” or similar.
You never need to bother with the grid as you are only ever working
 with the clues.
If you want to enter a guess you can click on that clue and you get
a text box that will accept 4 letters, or perhaps 4 separate boxes
with any letters already present filled in in the relevant places.
Perhaps when you complete a clue it would say “13 down. Filled in.
Type of medieval dagger commonly used in Scotland. 4 letters.
Dirk.” (i.e. would indicate that it had a word filled in and it
would also no longer separate the letters but rather speak out the
filled in word so it sounds like a word and not individual
 letters).
When the entire crossword is completed you would get an alert to
say that you’ve got them all correct.
Anything like this already exist? I’m not interested in the more
conventional approach even if it is accessible I’m afraid. My
gaming time is limited and any roaming – even on the scale of
Wordundrum – would be too time consuming I’m afraid. If such a game
doesn’t exist it would be great if a coder took it on.
 Thanks, Robin.

Question about Cursor Location and TypeInBraille?

2013-02-07 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I'm trying the TypeInBraille program and am finding it very user-friendly as
far as braille input goes. But I'm wondering where the cursor is when it
comes to correcting text.

I understand that I need to go to Navigation mode to read through the text
that I entered, but if I need to correct text, I need to flip back to Insert
mode.

When I flip back to Insert mode, will the newly inserted text get put in to
thr right of the current character, or will it push the current character
and everything to the right of it over? For example, if I misspell and write
"eggpant" and need to insert the "l", should the cursor be on the "p" or the
"a"?

Thanks,

Dani

How do I Make Corrections after Filling In a Field?

2013-02-01 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I'm awful at typing and editing on my iTouch, but need to be able to do it
in case I don't have my braille display handy. Is it possible to correct my
mistakes as I go, or do I have to wait till I'm done and then get back in to
the field to do it?

How do I go about correcting my many misspellings? I know that I can read
character by character, but am not sure how to use the onscreen keyboard to
fix my crappy typing. How do I know where the insertion point is? How do I
get to the onscreen keyboard to do the editing?

Is there a podcast somewhere that just goes over basic typing and editing?
This newbie needs a whole lot o' help.

TIA,

Dani

Can I Capture the Text from an App's Help File?

2013-01-29 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

The subject line just about says it. I downloaded the Sudoku4All app and am
trying to figure out how it works. I can access the How-to section of the
app, but there doesn't seem to be a way to copy its text to the clipboard so
I can access it outside of the app. ("Edit" isn't one of the choices on the
rotor.)

I was thinking I'd paste it in to a Mail message so I could e-mail it to
myself and emboss a copy.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Dani

RE: Locking screen without picking up IPodTouch

2013-01-15 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Lauren.
I'm new to using iThings too, and have managed to push buttons I didn't want
to by, I think, my palm touching the screen while I tried picking my iPod
Touch up.
Before picking the iPod up, I've gotten in to the habit of shaping my hand
in to a C, like I'm holding a glass of water. I pick it up around the
narrower edges; if I pick it up close to the top, I can use my index finger
to get to the sleep button.

Dani

Some of the bt keyboards include the sleep button, I've shut down a device
with those. But that is a larger keyboard, not a dinky one like you might
use with an iPod. Touching all the things on screen don't make a lot of
difference so long as you don't double tap them, or split tap them I
suppose if 2 fingers get involved. In truth, it's the first time I've heard
this as being an issue. In the absence of a keyboard, you will have to pick
it up at some point.

Hi all,

Is there a way of turning off the IPodTouch 5th gen without having to pickup

the device? As is whenever I try picking it up to pres
the physical sleep button on top I end up pressing all the buttons on the
home screen. There are many, many very experienced Apple
product users here, so I was just hoping I could tap into the accumulated
knowledge on this list. I know I can place the sleeping
iPod down and tap the home key to turn it on, so I'm hoping there is an
equally quick way of locking the screen. Thanks.

RE: A problem Pairing Braille Sense Plus with iPhone 5.

In what situations would the springboard reset help?

Hi.
Also, try doing a Springboard reset on the phone, by pressing the power/lock
button 6 times quickly. This will not cause you to lose any data.
Also, with regard to the Braille Sense plus, is your friend using the latest
firmware (v. 7.0?) If not, that could also be the issue, as earlier firmware
versions had problems.

RE: Choosing Samantha as default voice

2013-01-14 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Andrew.
It didn't seem to matter what region I had selected; I changed to Australia,
and still had Samantha as my default voice. I got a wee bit of a hint when I
listened to the podcast on the rotor options for IOS6.
Under the VoiceOver, find the Language roter. Go through the list and
double-tap to select the languages you want to use (I've selected U.S.
English, Australian English, and Irish English.) These have now been added
to the rotor settings.
When you cycle through the rotor now, you should have Samantha/U.S. English
as one of your choices. I'm not sure what she used to sound like, but that's
why I have more than one kind of English option selected; it gives me the
option to choose a different voice when I get frustrated with Samantha. For
instance, for just moving around the screen, Samantha's fine; but if I were
reading, I was thinking Karen might be nice to listen to, especially for
long things.
HTH,
Dani

Dear Listers,

Someone on the list has helpfully suggested that if I'd like to have
Samantha as my default voice instead of Daniel, I could do so by changing my
regional settings to the USA.

I've tried to accomplish this but I'm not quite sure how to do this. Could
someone please give me step by step instructions? I feel such a fool. I've
changed my region to USA but Daniel is still my default voice. How do I
switch to Samantha? In the language rotor I can choose English and it is a
female voice but it does not sound like Samantha used to sound. It's rather
strident unless she has changed her personality. How do people download
Samantha if they do at all?

I look forward to any suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Andrew

RE: Choosing Samantha as default voice

2013-01-14 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Andrew.
I turned my iPod Touch off, then back on again to see who I'd get as
Default; I got Samantha, even though I'd left it on Australian English as
the language before shutting down. I had to change to Australia to get Karen
as default.
So I think you do have to switch to the U.S. as far as region to get that
voice as default.
HTH,

Trouble Pairing BrailleEdge with 3rd Gen iTouch

2012-12-29 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I got a third gen iTouch as an early Christmas present, and so far have
managed to turn VoiceOver on. But I can't pair my BraileEdge with the Touch.
Bluetooth is on for both devices, and the Edge is in Terminal mode. The
iTouch isn't seeing the BrailleEdge at all. I've tried turning Bluetooth off
on the iTouch, then turning it on through the prompt that comes when I try
to pair the two devices; Bluetooth gets turned on again in the Touch, but no
success in seeing the Edge.
I've also tried resetting both devices, and still no sighting of the Edge by
the Touch.
What should I try next?
Thanks,
Dani
