iMessaging won't activate.

2012-08-23 Thread Jenifer Gilley
Hi all.
For some reason my iMessaging feature got turned off on my phone. Now it won't
let me turn it back on unless I use my apple ID. I thought before I had it
where it used my phone number. I don't want to use my apple ID because I don't
get mail at that address anymore. Now, what can I do?
Thanks for any help.
Jenifer.

I've been following this group for a while but this is my first post. I work
for Braille Institute and we've just released ViA, a free app that
aggregates and categorizes apps that are useful to VI uses and educators.
I'd like to invite this community to use it and provide feedback. There is
one issue with Voice Over that comes up when it reads an apps star rating
that we are fixing. Otherwise, it is fully accessible, including pinch zoom
capability on any page for low vision users Any suggestions are welcome and
I encourage you to use the built in accessibility rating system to share
your knowledge of apps that are useful to you. Let me know if we can make
this app better. Thanks.

Hi all,

I have hit a real mess-up problem and am not sure how to solve it.

So far I've taken all out of app switcher and rebooted, and will try a
hard reset if I must ...

Basically, I have my iPhone and Pod using the same log-in password and
have had no problems till now. Today I went to purchase an app on my
phone and kept getting a message, whilst in the App Store and attempting
to purchase, that Unable to connect to ITunes Store. (Bear in mind, I'm
in the App Store!)

The result is that I cannot download apps to my phone but, when trying the
same procedure with my iPod, this works. Unfortunately, the purchase
hasn't been transferred to my phone.

Ugh! Any suggestions on this one are most welcome.

Thanks.

It will answer and end calls. It does have a volume adjustment. The very
cool thing is that it is equipped with self-voicing. The first time you turn
it on, it welcomes you and gives you step-by-step instructions for pairing
with your phone. It then copies your contacts to it and you can use it to
make calls the you can do with SIRI or the iPhone itself. The quality seems
good as well. So far, I haven't found anything not to like. The fact that it
was only $55.00 didn't hurt either.

I am one of those who could not get prismo or Saytext to work at all, but can
with Text Detective.

I suppose that really it all comes down to, (just like with anything else,)
what works for one isn't always going to work for another.

Meanwhile, am I the only one who wishes that if they bought an app and didn't
like it or it didn't work for them, but maybe it would work for someone else,
that they could gift their coppy to them? At least then your money isn't going
to waste. *smile*

may work if you have enough vision to help you align, but it sure isn't working

So, I want to subscribe to the applevis podcast on my phone. But iTunes is not

I have to download each episode on my own? I thought u could subscribe, then
each time a new episode or podcast came out it would automatically be added to

Mike,

Again, apparently you don't read very well. As I said in my previous posts
had he placed the price at $1.99 or $4.99 up front I would probably have
bought it. If he puts a free limited version and a paid full version in the
store I would buy the paid version. Your assumption that I am bitching about
it costing money is totally and utterly off base. Before you go throwing the
blind card I suggest that you digest what the person is attempting to
impart. I have and will continue to support apps that are created for our
community. Your assertion that I am one of those blinds who believe that
everything for blind consumption should be handed to us without cost is
incorrect and quite frankly offensive. My intent in voicing my opinion this
morning was to indicate to Ben that I think he made a mistake in the way he
implemented his pricing model and maybe that he should possibly rethink it,
not to get into a pissing match with you or anyone else.

I

Now on to your point. I reviewed the description in the app store when I

purchased the app. Nowhere did it indicate that I was going to eventually
have to pay something for what I was downloading. Now after 30 days he
posts
to this list that this would be happening, and the only reason he posted
was

because there was a bug in the app that didn't give you the correct price.
Had there not been a bug I would have attempted to post something and then

it.
In my book this is extortion. Granted you are thinking that I am a dick

so be it. Don't think for a second that I would not and have not done this

Ben, should you decide to make a limited free version and a paid full

I hope I never have a situation to try this, and I say: Try at your own
risk. I can't emphasize try at your own risk enough, either it will work,
or have the potential to make the situation worse. But I think there is a
possibility it will work. I thought it up when I heard of somebody's
husband breaking off her cord's plug in her XM satellite receiver. We
didn't get to try the following, being that I didn't know about it until
after they had thrown the whole thing in the trash.

Being totally blind, I definitely would get competent sighted assistance
for this one. And I would do several dry runs first. But get a toothpick
and some instant glue. Put a very small drop of instant glue onto the
toothpick, and stick to a point as near the center of this broken off
connector as possible. The flatter it broke off, the better. You
certainly don't want any of this glue to get into the jack, so if I were
doing it, I would hold the phone in such a way that it is above the
toothpick, and lower the phone onto the toothpick. Hopefully, any extra
glue will run down the toothpick and not into the jack. Wait a few
seconds, and see if you can pull the whole mess out. I think you might
have one shot only.

Again, I say try at your own risk.

Subject: Layout for Hidden Country Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard [was Re:
bluetooth miny keyboard]

Hi Jenifer,

Your question about the layout of the Hidden Country Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard
prompted me to search the viphone list archives, since I recall that Geoff
Waaler posted the layout for this keyboard. You did, indeed, order a Hidden
Country keyboard, since I found that post first. First, I'll just state
that if you've managed to pair your Bluetooth keyboard, you can always find
out what the keys are by turning on keyboard help mode. Even if you don't
know where your Control and Option (or Alt) keys are located, in order to
press Control-Option-K to enter this mode, where you'll be told each key and
its action by VoiceOver when you press that key or key combination, or even
if your keyboard does not have a Control or Option key, it is possible to
enter this mode by using the touch screen to navigate to the VoiceOver
Practice gestures area in Settings General Accessibility VoiceOver
while the keyboard is paired. This has the same effect as entering keyboard
help mode with Control-Option-K, and you can leave keyboard help mode by
navigating away from the VoiceOver Practice area using touch screen gestures
instead of pressing the escape key to end this mode.

I'll paste in Geoff's post giving the layout of the Bear Motion Bluetooth
Mini-Keyboard, which I've copied from the Google Groups web page for the
viphone list. I believe this is the brand that you ordered from Hidden
Country (or shop.hidcountry, com) at the time, because they were also
supplying this keyboard through Amazon. According to my hazy recollection,
Geoff ordered this from Amazon, and Andrea ordered hers from Hidden Country,
but the layout was the same. I also recall that Ricardo Walker much later
did a podcast on the Bear Motion Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard, which turned out
to be similar to the layout of the ThinkGeek TK-421 mini-keyboard that I
reviewed. If Geoff's description is relevant for your keyboard, which I
believe it is, then in order to access the arrow keys you need to press the
Fn key together with the a, s, d, or w key. Hopefully, any future searchers
will be able to quickly find this information through a Mail Archive search,
now that the viphone list has a secondary archive page at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com/

Geoff's post with the keyboard info appears below my signature. He actually
describes the physical layout of the keyboard and where you can switch it
on, so this should be better than just giving you a map of keyboard function
combinations. Geoff uses F to indicate the Fn key in key press
combinations. There is both a left Fn key and a right Fn key on the bottom
row, so you can use either one in these combinations.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Greetings,

Esther's recent reference to the escape key reminded me that maybe I can
spare a few people the modicum of frustration I experienced locating this.
Its great that so many are generous with their time creating podcasts and
tutorials, but I'm sure there are many others who abhor time consuming
podcasts as much as I when concise instructions will suffice -- honestly
reading lists such as this one I often wonder how blind people ever managed
to use the bath room, pick their noses or put on clothing before the days
of podcasts lasting hours describing every solitary detail, but I digress.
I don't know about any other mini keyboards, so the following is only
necessarily applicable for the Bare Motion Mini bt keyboard. The link for
this product at the US Amazon site is:

Assuming the space bar is toward you, the USB port (used for charging only)
is in front of the 3 and the power switch is in front of the 5. The left
position (toward the USB port) is power on.
The paring button is just above the 8 -- you'll notice a tiny recessed place
where you can put a finger nail if you don't bite them. To pair you'd power
the keyboard on and go into settings - general - bluetooth, and verify
that bluetooth is turned on. Remain in that window, and hold down the pair
button on the keyboard for a couple seconds. After a few moments the mini
keyboard will appear in your Bluetooth settings area. When you double tap,
a prompt is presented instructing you to enter a four digit number on the
keyboard, followed by the return key.
I observed that if I enter control+option+k I hear an announcement such as

This is why it's good there are hundreds of apps which do the same
thing. Because they all do it slightly different, then everyone is
pleased. I personally don't like Voice Over interfering with my
recordings, so if it goes away when I'm recording, so much the better.

Hi. I am hesitant to mention this because im not sure where you can get
it, but possibly. I was given this holder last summer which fits the
iphone perfectly. it is cloth, hangs from your shoulder, and about waste
height is your phone in a little pocked with a clasp, verry easy to get in
and out but never detatches when you don't want it to. This is made by a
lady who knows nothing about iphones, just makes them as a fun craft. Now
maybe just with the idea you can look at amazon or somewhere. I'll look
there too tomorrow, and just see what I can find. if this doesn't work
out, maybe the wrist band is the best thing.

How is a Sonos system for a blind person? I've been tempted to look
into getting one, although the fact that Spotify's iPad app now
supports airplay makes Sonos seem less helpful.
On the phone, the unlabeled button near the top of the now playing
screen is the hide button. The unlabeled buttons on the search screen
are just duplicates of the track/artist/album buttons, which are
labeled.
Spotify is fantastic in theory, but the execution has been mediocre.
It's too bad, because the service has the potential to save the music
business, but it's just not catching on in part because the app has so
many problems and the company just doesn't seem to want to fix it.
It's very frustrating.

Hi all. This is an app which is free right now. I found it from the
News
Store app. In any case, what's really interesting is that when you
record, the recording is done as a .mov file. This means that the
recording is saved in the camera roll. Furthermore, this means that if
you want to do audio-only recordings for uploading to Youtube, you can
do it with this app since it's technically a video, but with audio
only.
I don't know what it shows on the screen, maybe a blank page, or a
logo

of some kind, but it's not a bad concept I think. I did a short
recording and confirmed that it went to the camera roll, and I was
even

able to email it to myself. The app has no settings to mess with, and
the recordings are clear. Only one button to start and one to stop.
That's about as simple as it gets. The information is below.

The app is called Quick Record and it's by Lin Fei.

The link is:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quick-record/id469617143?mt=8ls=1

Take care all.

Hi,

IMO this could solve all of the GPS issues that we as blind people
have been having on iDevices - E.G. not really one app that does
everything that we need. The turn by turn directions for example
should be really usefull and it sounds like they've used prerecorded
human speech for the audio output which should make the app much
cheaper than blindSquare for example where seemingly the majority of
the cost is due to licencing costs for the TTS.
Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
Ben.

I am relentless on getting Christianbook Distributors to make their app
accessible with voiceover. This is one fight I'm not giving up on.
I've written them each time their app is updated but still useless for us to
use.
I don't know if anybody else cares about this but I do.
My notes are getting more and more, shall we say, firm, grin. There are
other book apps that are accessible with voiceover, I don't understand why this
one isn't and I told them that it is only right and fair they look into this.
If they want to be an outreach to other people, they need to do all they can
to do that, and that includes making reading material accessible to people with
reading disabilities, audio is just not enough any more.
Just thought you'd want to know about my crusade, grin.

Subject: Weather widget question, can I reset local weather?

Hi everyone!
Okay, this is not exactly a life-altering issue, but it is a bit annoying.
grin. I live in the city of Santa Cruz, California. When I first set up
my phone and everybody starts looking for my location, the weather widget
comes up and quickly says Capitola or Aptos Hills. Now, these towns are
clear across the county and their weather is quite different than it is
where I live. The only way I get around this is to turn off local weather
and add a city, mine. When I type in my zip code, well, truthfully, it now
shows me another town up in the hills, but it's closer to Santa Cruz.
So, my question. Can I reset local weather by making it search for my
location again? I'm assuming that if I have local weather turned on, it
will show the weather wherever I am if I travel. Is that a correct
assumption? I have tried turning weather off, in the location services
section of settings and then turning it back on again. This did not fix
the problem.
And just for fun, by the way, I tried adding the extra four digits of my
zip code. That was good for a laugh. It showed me Portugal.
Anyway, if anyone knows of a good article on the weather widget that I'm
not finding, that would be cool.

Thanks for any help any of you can offer.

It appears that iOS 5.1.1 is out for iPhones, Touches and iPads for those who
wish to give it a try. I remember running into some issues that didn't prevent
me from updating to 5.1 on my phone, but did crash it the first time I tried
downloading it. Gizmodo only mentions a few bug fixes so I don't know if
there's anything accessibility related. Perhaps others can dig up the
information.
