RE: Kindle question about page number

I don't think many kindle books have page numbers though I know some do.

In the book I just finished reading, when the menu is visible, I touched the
lower right-hand corner of the screen and would hear something like: 31
percent, page 122 location 1025.

Since my wife had the hard back of the same book I found out that the page
number was the same in the Kindle and the hard back. This was the first book
I had purchased for the Kindle app.

Subject: iCookbook and iCookbook Diabetic apps free today (July 10, 2013)

Hi All,

These two universal iCookbook apps are free today, and appear accessible:
. iCookbook - thousands of name-brand recipes with easy Voice Control prep
(free, was $4.99)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/icookbook-thousands-name-brand/id420762854?m
t=8
. iCookbook Diabetic - Recipes and nutritional information plus health
articles for people with diabetes (free)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/icookbook-diabetic-recipes/id541245203?mt=8

The version of iCookbook for Diabetics seems to usually be free; the regular
version of iCookbook just went free today "for a limited time". Quick
testing shows the both seem to work for me on the iPhone 5, but there are
review comments that the regular version of iCookbook doesn't work well on
older processors, or on devices running iOS 5. I would avoid trying to use
the voice control feature like the plague, as it seems to make the app
totally unresponsive. There were no issues with the older and free
iCookbook for Diabetics app. Accessibility seemed slightly better in the
iPhone version. I think on the iPad that the recipe images may show up
asunlabeled buttons, This generally works, though, unlike the "How to Cook
Everything" app being featured as an anniversary free download, where you
can navigate to recipes, but not actually read the full contents, or even
the recipe names, unless you email them to yourself.

Maybe other users can report back on their experiences with these apps.
HTH.

Cheers,

Esther

RE: gps in a vehicle?

It makes sense to me that a GPS app wouldn't announce street crossing while
traveling in a vehicle. Neither trekkers do this. You are moving too fast

My question echoes previous posts on this list.

While in a moving vehicle, which gps app will tell you what streets you are
crossing as you travel?

I downloaded ariadne, it does not do this. It does do a good job for the
road you are on, or turn onto, but does not give info on streets you cross.

Apple maps on my Iphone 4s can plan a route, but that's about it.

Any advice/suggestions are appreciated.

I may have missed some of the thread on this but saw a reference to copying
the older version to the apps folder and synching. I've synched my phone
since updating so don't have the older version of the app on my PC. Does
anyone have it? I'd really appreciate it as I have a presentation on Friday
and was hoping to demo it working. Apologies by the way if this in any way
contravenes Apple's tees and cees.

Thanks, Robin.

I had a less-than-thrilling experience with this one. I live in a place

others--yet when I search for a type of restaurant such as Italian, Steak,
bbq, nothing shows up within 40 miles.I also had problems
correcting my address and eventually gave up.

Greetings,

Thank you for your continued support and feedback. The fourth version of
our All Access Taking Menus & More app has just been approved by Apple, and
the app has only been out exactly one month!

This version lets you type all or part of a restaurant's name when
searching. So you can type S U B W for example and have subway restaurants
listed.

Here's a link to the app:

Keep sending your feedback, using the feedback button in the app, and we
appreciate your reviews on the iTunes app store. Your help makes the app
better and lets others know about it.

When you say news feeds, are you talking about RSS feeds? If so, I really
like Feeddler. I sync my RSS feeds with theoldreader.com now that Google
Reader is going away. Feeddler has a free version and a paid version. I like
it so much, I really need to buy the paid version, but I can do everything I
can think of with the free version, and I have yet to check into what I get
with the paid version.

I realized te subject of carrying cases has been hashed out alot over the
past few months, and I asked a question during one of these conversations.
I don't remember seeing an answer. Is there a carrying case with a strap
availalbe that would fit the mophi juice pack with phone? I know there are
belt clips that might work, but I tend to have bad luck with those. I was
reading on one of the lists that someone uses their old victor stream case
for their phone, but that isn't a great fit. I'm afraid I'll drop it like
that. If need be, write me off list on this. thanks.

own an IPad mini. I don't know anything except I think that the IPad
will allow me
to do more things than I can with my windows 7 computer.

I'm getting my IPad mini from the apple store next
Monday.
My
sighted wife is also getting one. I am a total. So, what do I need
to know going
into the apple store, and how do I set up the IPad mini to get on my
network at
home etc.? I know there will be more questions but, right now, that
will do. Thanks
for your input. Jim

You can buy an HDMI to analog converter but don't know how well they work. As
to just using sound with fiber optic, apple movies demand that the actual

Hey guys, just curious about a couple of things. Been looking for a good all
in one radio app, and over the years I've played with Tunein radio, Ootunes,
and recently had seen Hi Def Radio and was considering getting Hi Def Radio
Pro for both my iPhone and iPad. What are some thoughts on apps and which
ones do you recommend and why. Looking for a really good one, I'm liking
Tunein, but always seem to go back to Ootunes. Tunein's shows on demand tend
to catch my attention but I didn't know what everybody else thought about
different ones and why, just getting an idea. Thanks and talk to you soon.
Oh yeah, I meant to tell everyone. I'm no longer on facebook or twitter, it
got too crazy and busy with a lot of things going on in life in general but
I'm playing ande experimenting with a blog. it's a random blog but I might
be able to have fun with it. If you guys are interested in following it,
it's at: http://temons9.wordpress.com and I'l probably be doing some audio
booing and the like up there as well so it could be fun. Anyway, take care
and talk to you guys soon, but just was wondering about that. Talk to you
soon.

Larry, is this a new bottle? I'm asking because the clearer the image is,
the more likely it will identify the brand. My pickles and other bottles in
my fridge all have wrinkled labels and aren't all that easy to identify.

I just tried TapTapSee on an empty bag of croutons I want to repurchase The
first time, I heard that it was a clear plastic package, the second time it
told me to please center the object, and then finally it told me it was a
butter garlic crouton bag. I already knew the flavor, though.

I've tried this bag with Talking goggles and got the same info, but no brand
recognition.

My next step is to try VizWhiz and get some real time help.

I'm guessing that it might recognize the image but can't translate it due to
funky font or like I said, an unclear label.

Hello Larry and all:

First, my apologies to the list. I inadvertently sent a blank message to the
list. I know that happens all the time though that does not make it an
acceptable or desirable practice so again my apologies.

As for cam find, I have had good success with it. keep in mind that cam find
is not necessarily a identification software. It is not necessarily designed
to take a picture and identify it through crowd sourcing. rather, it
identifies a picture and then informs someone where they can purchase the
product and for how much. or, if you should point it at a billboard of an
actor or landmark and snap the picture, it will identify the person or
landmark and provide you with additional information.

Used it to find out about my favorite tennis player . rafael Nadal . since
his picture has been everywhere because of the French open.

Hopefully this information proves useful to you. Please let us know.

Take good care and I wish you enough.

Hi Larry,

Both of these are OCR apps, another popular one is Prizmo. Text Detective
apparently doesn't recognize an entire page in portrait mode and most people
on the list prefer Prizmo and/or Text Grabber.

You can find reviews for many of these apps on http://www.applevis.com.

Here are the app store links for Prizmo, Text Grabber and Text Detective:

Prizmo:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/prizmo-scanning-ocr-speech/id366791896?mt=8
Text Grabber:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textgrabber-+-translator/id438475005?mt=8
Text Detective:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textdetective/id541494875?mt=8

By the way and to use Prizmo as an example, it is super easy to find these
app store descriptions, just do a google search for the following:

Prizmo on iTunes

Then if you are using Jaws or another screenreader with quick navigation, go
to the top of the screen, then type "2" for heading level 2 followed by "3"
for heading level 3. This takes you to the first search result and I don't
think I ever came across a case where the first search result wasn't the
iTunes app store page for the app I was looking for. Once you press enter
and the page loads, use 1 for heading level 1 or simply "h" for heading to
find where the description starts. This is just as easy and quick as to
write a message asking about what a particular app does, you usually get a
better, more complete answer and you can read the description, see the price
and read reviews all at the same time.

Sieghard

Hi again, Larry,

I did the same search I described in my post about how to find app
descriptions on iTunes, but instead of searching google for "TapTapSee on
iTunes" which would have given me the App Store link, I searched for
"TapTapSee on Applevis". The first search result link is below:

http://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/utilities/taptapsee-blind-visually-impaired
-camera

This is a written summary and review of the app. If you read down the page,
eventually you find a heading which says "Applevis has a Podcast about this
app" and there is a link which, if you click it, opens the page with the
Podcast. The direct link for where you can play the Podcast is as follows:

Good luck,

Sadly, I found the app useless and deleted it from my phone.

I had really hoped this would have lots of menus at least for chain
restaurants in my area, but sadly, no.

Perhaps I'll just have to give this a miss for a while and see how things

npr news question

2013-06-08 Thread Larry Lumpkin
I did a search in the store and found "npr for ipad" but no "npr news". I
had the npr app from earlier days and re-installed it. I was disappointed
in what I saw because it didn't seem to be as accessible as others on this
list said the npr news was. Have I gotten the wrong app and, if so, can
someone point me to the right one? Thanks.

PRNewswire.
June 5, 2013.

Project RAY Ltd., developer of the first smartphone specially designed for
eye-free operation, and Odin Mobile, the nationwide provider of cellular
service dedicated to providing mobile communication services to the blind
and visually impaired, today announced America's first full mobile service
for the blind and visually impaired.

"This collaboration will provide the blind the ability to access smartphone
technology through a unique user interface that emphasizes simplicity and
ease of use," said Robert Felgar , general manager of Odin Mobile. "Odin
Mobile is excited to partner with Project RAY to make advanced mobile
technology more accessible to the blind."

Features of America's first full mobile service include:

. Odin Mobile's full telephone service including voice, text and data, with
customized eye-free setup and services.

. Affordable smartphone developed by Project RAY specially for the blind,
from its unique operating system & eye-free operation to specialized
built-in apps and content.

. Multiple built-in services for the blind and visually impaired within a
single affordable device and one unified user experience - including voice
calls, email, messaging contact list services, calendar, GPS, advanced WEB
remote assistance, voice recorder, panic and emergency services, color
identification, pictures transcription, banknote recognition, and more.

. Advanced communication and lifestyle services such as book and magazine
subscriptions built into the off-the-shelf device.

. Unique operating system and user interface specially developed for
eye-free operation including single gesture access to frequently used
numbers and functions, one-hand operation, homogeneous interface across
multiple system functions and services.

"Together with Odin Mobile, and with the initial and invaluable support of
Qualcomm's Wireless Reach program, we are excited to bring the affordable,
lifestyle changing benefits of smartphone technology and services to
millions of blind and visually impaired people throughout the United
States," said Boaz Zilberman , Founder & CEO of Project RAY. "Our RAY
smartphone combined with Odin Mobile's full-cellular services for the blind
and visually impaired, will finally bring to this important community the
same services available to the mainstream full-sighted community."

Project RAY and Qualcomm Wireless Reach collaborated on the first trial and
commercial launch of the RAY device in Israel in early 2013. As one of the
project's primary funders, Qualcomm provided technical advice, support,
funding and in-kind contributions in support of the development of a device
that successfully promotes independence and social inclusion for people with
disabilities.

"We are proud to work with Project RAY and support their objective of
bringing a mobile device to market that supports blind and visually impaired

richer social life for users by providing an all-in-one, independent-living
companion capable of eye-free input, text-to-speech, access to content,
navigation, label recognition, augmented reality and integration with social
networks. This is a great example of how working with partners, we can help
improve people's lives with the latest technology."

the world's first mobile device specially developed for the blind and
visually impaired, will be officially launched at the 2013 M-Enabling Glo

additional cost of $3.99 or $4.99 for unlocking the program to unlimited

love the app very much and, with ICatcher, the functionality I had with my

ICatcher is very easy to use and all screen elements and buttons are
labeled.

Yes, the first thing I did was search for Applevis with no results. It's
the correct url, I use it with my plextalk pocket. I'd like to have
applevis on my ipot touch. I may end up having to buy downcast.

I'm not sure. That looks like the right URL. I have AppleVis in my podcasts
in the Apple Podcasts app, so I know it can be done. I usually just search
for the podcast first before resorting to the URL. Did you just search for
AppleVis? I tried this myself, but it just brings up the episodes I already
have on my iPhone.

No, Downcast which I think most blind as well as sighted users agree is
probably the best Podcasting app is $1.99. iCatcher is $2.99 and it is also
fully Voiceover accessible. I just read that it now supports the Action
rotor for deleting episodes which Downcast does not yet do although I think
the developer is working on it. I started out with iCatcher and then
switched to Downcast, might just have to try iCatcher again. If you listen
to Podcasts a lot you'll be happy you spend the $2 or $3.

Here are the app store links:

Downcast: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/downcast/id393858566?mt=8

iCatcher:

Hi Russ,

You would be much better off at this point to use apps like Downcast or
iCatcher. The apple Podcast app has been improved a fair bit, but it's still
not nearly as good as some of the other Podcast apps out there.
