RE: question about siri
Today I told Siri to direct me to a certain Mexican food restaurant that I wanted to go to. She told me the way by opening Apple Maps. She even told me when my destination was on my right. It should work if you have the latest updates for the IPhone. I don't know if this topic has been at the list before, but let me try again. When I say to siri, I want to go to what ever place. Siri says, I have found one place. it is in bla bla bla. Do you want it? I say, yes. But siri say again. I have found one place. This is bla bla bla. Do you want it? Looks like some times, not all the time, my phone is not recognizing my orders to siri, and my finger print either. It is normal? I've given up on it because it doesn't get data from fb for me. I liked it when it worked, but... I've switched to Voicebook for now. However, the app either crashes, or it simply doesn't fetch statuses anymore. This happens every few weeks. So I constantly delete the app, re-install it, log into facebook, and everything works fine again. Recently, it was closed without fetching anything again, but re-installation didn't change this. It still closes after having said done loading new status updates. But no statuses appear. Do you have any problems with this app? Number one go to Facebook, I did this via the and.Facebook.com site. When you get there, you need to go into your settings, then go into your apps, Find voice book, and make it so that voice book is no longer allowed on your Facebook. I hope that part makes sense. Then, number two On your eye device, uninstall voice book. Be sure both Voicebook and Facebook are out of your app switcher. Number three reinstall voice book, and follow the directions to Allow voice book to be an app on your Facebook page. Now, when you try to use voice book, it might still give you those errors a few more times. But keep trying after you do all the steps I told you, and it should work. For those who have purchased the upgrade, you'll need to go through the purchase procedure again. However, the good news is that Apple detects that you've already bought it and won't charge you again, although it will seem like they will since all their prompts assume you haven't already paid. At the last moment, it will tell you that you have already paid and will unlock the app. The App is free for 30 days, and then costs $1.99 US if you wish to coninue using it to post status updates/comments/likes. RE: would like some case recommendations for the iPhone 5
I'm not sure of the name of it, but the case from Verizon that is hard and has a belt clip is an excellent choice. It has a part that stays next to you, I clip it to the top of my jeans, and you simply lift the phone out as needed. I've dropped my phone a few times and this case has served me well. I highly recommend it. Oh, and yes, the back of the phone and the sides are covered as well. RE: how to integrate gmail with phone/contacts on ios?
I'm not so sure on this. I just recently moved to a IPhone 5, and my phone is sending and receiving my mail just fine. We have an exchange server set up here at home. I didn't set it up myself, but in checking with my hubby, he did it the usual way. I would think Apple would lose a lot of business because of so many workplaces that are using the IPhone. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Grant Hardy Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2013 11:57 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: how to integrate gmail with phone/contacts on ios? Correct. Not only that, but Microsoft Exchange is no longer supported for new devices (i.e. if you've used Gmail via Exchange on your device before, you can keep doing so but you can't set up new devices to use it). So for all practical purposes, there's no Exchange support anymore. So for synchronization of contacts, CardDav is really the only option. Thanks once again Regards Andy S -Original Message- From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, March 15, 2013 4:22 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: question Iphone 5 Hi Andy, I won't list all the advantages of an iPhone over any other phone if you happen to be a blind user, but here are the main points: Blind or not blind, the iPhone is the most popular single phone, it is one of the fastest, best designed and, in the case of the iPhone 5, I think it is also the thinnest smartphone currently available. It also has one of the best cameras, not necessarily in Megapixels, but it has been proven many times that pictures taken with an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 are better than those taken with another phone which has a camera with a higher Megapixel sensor. This is because just the sensor isn't responsible, it also the quality of the lens and the way the image is processed. For a visually impaired person, the iPhone has by far the best accessibility. Android accessibility is definitely better now than it was a year or 2 ago, but while iPhone accessibility is being improved as well, the iPhone was just as accessible 3 years ago already as it is now. Because Apple has such control over both hardware, the iOS platform and the app store, everything just works. Of course there are bugs as well, but Apple's commitment to accessibility is probably stronger than Google's and while Google seems to improve accessibility as well, the many differences in the hardware from so many manufacturers and the stuff they do with Android to customize it to their liking simply makes it more difficult. In total there are many more games on the iOS side than the Android side. iDevices are the biggest mobile gaming platform and you can listen to last week's Today in iOS Podcast which you can find at www.TodayInIOS.com if you want to hear more on that topic. The iPhone may not have as many cool and cutting edge features as Android nowadays since Apple takes a more conservative approach, but keep in mind that it was because of Apple's integration of SIRI into iOS and the iPhone 4S why nowadays Android and other platforms are also doing this. When SIRI first came out some tech pundits laughed it off as a gimmick just as many thought the iPhone itself when it was first released in 2007 was a temporary phenomena and fad which people would soon put aside and forget about. Android may have happened anyways, but to a large degree Android came about because of the iPhone and because of the vision Steve Jobbs had. Whether you buy an iPhone or not is entirely up to you, it's not up to me or anybody else to convince you beyond pointing out the facts, but if you do your homework you will probably come to the conclusion that unless you reject the concept of the iPhone and maybe Apple as a whole for whatever reason, the iPhone is the best choice if a blind person wants the most accessible smartphone. If you don't mind fiddling around and going through a lot of frustration then an Android phone maybe right for you, but if you don't like Apple's control you can always Jailbreak the iPhone which gives you a lot more flexibility as to what you can do with it. Beyond that I would encourage you to search the list archives if you have questions first as after years of list traffic just about everything you can think of has been discussed on here and, as I already said, the Today in iOS podcast is one of the best sources for information about the iPhone and the iOS platform. Also I am looking for a weather radio app that works with voiceover. I know noaa weather radio does but there's also one I saw called IMap weather radio, I can't find any info on it's compatibility with voiceover. In the newest update to I OS 6 I notice sometimes voiceover will say heading not found, what does this mean? Also regarding the app store, if I search for an app that is similar to one I already have installed it will highlight the open button to that particular app instead of showing free, $.99, etc. An example of this would be I already have a police scanner app installed but I saw one that I liked better, well when I search for that app it will show the one I want so I double tap on it and it will go back to the app I've already had installed. RE: Braille Touch Doesn't Work as I expected
I would also like to be able to put it on a flat surface. I found it awkward to type with the way you have to hold the phone and use your fingers to type. I feel like there's more potential for dropping the phone. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kimber Gardner Sent: Friday, February 01, 2013 11:32 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Braille Touch Doesn't Work as I expected I have to agree. The fact that you can try the app before purchase is excellent. I am a lifelong Braille user and input in Braille every day. And I think this is my problem. When I heard about Braille Touch, I imagined that you would input Braille in the same way that you would on a Perkins or refreshable Braille display that offers a keyboard. But really you don't. On such products, the keys are aligned horizontally. Perhaps there's a little diagonal placement for the sake of ergonomics, but fundamentally they are horizontal. With Braille Touch, however, dost 1, 2 and 3 are under each other. This is how they obviously appear when reading the cell, but not when you're inputting. So people who do a lot of input on refreshable Braille displays are going to have to remember to Braille as the cell looks, not as they would on a Braille device. I wonder if making the dots horizontal could be a future setting. I think there's enough screen space for this to work, and I know for my part I'd find it more intuitive because of the amount of Brailling I do on other devices. A few things I found: * Mail app bug with message list: the issue of first message being focused after reading a message further down the list is still there. * Example pass added: Apple put an example pass in Passbook. When you open Passboo, you'll see an Apple logo and you'll see a more concise explanation of Passbook functionality. When you tap learn more button, you'll come to an example pass from Apple. Tap done to return. * Music controls in lock screen: When you're on lock screen, double-tap Home button to toggle between display of alerts and music controls. Releasing 6.1 could mean two things this year: * Apple might hold an event in March, announccing 6.1.1 or 6.2 then. * Apple might release 6.2 or 7.0 this summer (7.0 would indeed be previewed this summer, if pattern holds). Please tell us if there are other features you find - both overall ones and VoiceOver specific ones. RE: email sound alert
I thought there was only one email sound. Hubby would like to have different sounds for his home and work email accounts. He doesn't want to look at work email when he's off. If you have your mail account configured to use Push or check at a certain time interval it should do this. I guess it's like phone calls and text messages, they come in regardless whether the Phone or Messages app is open or in the app switcher and mail is the same. And just to make sure I am not putting my foot in my mouth, I did just test this. I removed everything from the app switcher so it was completely empty. For good measure I rebooted the phone by turning it off and on again. While it was off I sent an email from my personal address to my business address, both of these are set up on my iPhone. My business email is full exchange via Office 365 and my personal is a Hotmail address and I have both said to Push which means messages come in instantly. When I turned my phone back on and Voiceover started talking in the lock screen I waited a moment and about 2 seconds later I heard the mail sound I selected for my business mail account, I hadn't even unlocked the phone at that point, once I did Voiceover said Mail, 1 new item and my email was there.
