RE: Apps and Widgets

2024-03-07 Thread Mario Eiland
HI Jim,

If I remember correctly widgets were an option we could have on or turned off
when we first set up our iPhones. If that’s something you want back such as the
weather widget, then try the following.

Double tap twice and hold on the second tap and you will hear couple of tones
and VoiceOver will announce “start Editing.” Scroll to the top and you will
find an option to add a widget. Double tap on that and you will see a list of
widgets you can add and one of those is the weather widget. That should give
you a good start.

Subject: Apps and Widgets

Good afternoon,

I have an inquiry, so please bear with me, because I’m uncertain about some
things.

When I received a new work iPhone, one thing I noticed was that when I’d put my
finger on the Weather app, it would not just say “Weather”, but it would also
give me the location and other information, such as temperatures and whether or
not rain was expected. My own personal phone doesn’t do that when I touch the
weather app. I have to go into it and then read about my location and
temperature and such. Much more swiping.

I’d love to be able to have my weather app speak those things on my personal
iPhone as well.

It’s the same with the calendar app on my work iPhone. I’ll touch it, and it
will give me the date, and then I swipe to the right, and it lets me know if I
have any appointments or events.

I’ve looked at things like settings in both apps, which really didn’t do me
much good. Then, someone asked if I had widgets on my screen for these apps,
and I had no idea what that meant. So, I thought I’d ask.

1. What’s a widget?
2. How can I make the weather app or widget speak my location’s
temperature and relevant information by just simply touching it without
actually getting into it?
3. How can I get my calendar to automatically let me know if I have any
appointments or events without always getting into it?

If these things are being done on my Work iPhone, which is a 12, I would
imagine they can be done on a 15 Pro.

Thanks for any information.

I’m also going to see if there are any AppleVis tutorials on whatever widgets
are.

Jim

You can also get into edit mode by just flicking down once and double tapping.

I have the weather widget in a stacked widget, and I hear “74 degrees, cloudy,
high of 74 degrees, low of 64 degrees” when I touch the app, so I think Mario
is right, and that’s what you need.

I’m also wondering what you get when you turn on badges in the notifications

2024-03-09 Thread Mario Eiland
Hi Jenny,

It sounds like you might have your thermostat set on learning mode?

I turned learning mode off and I just go with the conventional way of using a
schedule. I keep mine always in heat or cool mode depending in which season we
are and om home mode all the time. There are four of us living in the house and
seldom is the house empty. So I don’t find it necessary to have it change to
away.

I scheduled for the night temperature to drop as low as 65 degrees from 10:00
PM to 5:00 AM.

>From 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM I have it set to get up to 68 degrees.

Of course, if I need it to change it then I use my Alexa to tell it to set the
heat or cool to whatever temperature I want. Also, I can use the Nest app to do
that as well, but I find it’s more convenient to use the Alexa devices.

I don’t know if that helps any, but there you go. 😊

RE: Accessible doorbell systems

2024-03-10 Thread Mario Eiland
Hi Don,

When asking about accessible doorbells, what do you mean by accessible? How
accessible would you like it to be?

I also use the Ring doorbell and I have it integrated with everybody’s iPhone
who lives in the house plus our Echo devices. Any time anyone nears our house
porch we receive announcements that it detected motion. If someone rings the
doorbell we have the option to either pick it up via the Ring app on our
iPhones or the Alexa by simply asking Alexa to answer doorbell. For those who
can see can activate the camera on their phones and see who is at the door.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t identify the person for me yet. I’m hoping that’s
near in the future with the advancement of AI. But for now I love it since we
are notified any time we have a package dropped off and if anyone is home then
we can immediately retrieve it.

I’m not sure how it integrates with the Google Home, but with the Echo devices
you can download, what they call a Skill with the Alexa app and as long as you
have a Ring account establish then you can sign into the Ring Skill and
integrate it with your Echo. It’s pretty awesome!

Hope that helps some!

2024-03-10 Thread Mario Eiland
HI Jenny,

I don’t know if you use an iPhone or some other type of phone. I use an iPhone
and I installed the Nest app on there. In the event that you do have access to
the Nest app on an iPhone. This is how you would turn off the learning mode.

Open the Nest app > Find the Settings button and double tap to get into
Settings > scroll all the way to the bottom and look for whatever you named the
location of where the thermostat is located (in my case it’s Dining Room) >
double tap here to get into the specific settings for your location > look for
Auto Schedule and turn that off.

If you use Alexa, you can also integrate your thermostat with it. Go to your
Alexa app on your smart phone and download the Nest Skill.

Hope that helps some!

If you think the learning mode is on, how do I turn that off? Or would it be
better for a visual person to do that with the wheel thing on the thermostat
that’s connected to the wall? Also, will I still conserve energy if learning
mode is turned off? When I leave to go somewhere will it go into a way mode
since you know how like when you leave your house that’s why it normally does
that it’s so it’s not using as much energy once you leave your house.

The doorbell has to be installed outside like your standard doorbell. I had
someone sighted do that for me. Actually, I had a professional do it for me. I
think that’s all you would need, accept I went further by purchasing a wireless
chime that was place upstairs so if the doorbell was rang then it could be
heard in every echo in the house plus your smart phone.

It’s been several years ago since I bought the equipment.

Ring Chime Pro - $44.99

Ring Video Doorbell 2 - $134.99

Installation was $58.49.

Just remember this was 3 years ago.

Hope that helps.

The Ring doorbell replaces the old one. So it’s powered like the original.

How is the outside door bell unit powered?

I assume it is attached to the wall.

does a hole need to be drilled through the wall to connect to the household
wiring?

Thanks,

accessible would you like it to be?

Yes and don’t think would need the extra doorbell chime since live in a one
story condo that has three of the amazon Alexa devices throughout my place.

I’m sure can get someone like my Dad who is an electrical engineer to wire the
doorbell up or someone from the condo association or hire someone to do it.

So excuse me if this has already been answered from others; but, take it that
can talk back and forth through the system when someone rings the doorbell?

Thanks.

Hello,

What I need is a motion detector. I don't need another doorbell.

Currently I have the logenex intercom, teledoorBell. The intercom box on the
outside has a door bell button. Inside, the home phones ring (with a distinct
pattern). Cordless phones can be moved around easily for convenience.

Someone mentioned that the Ring doorbell pro has a motion detector.

Having two door bell buttons would be confusing to door visitors.

Is there an iPhone app for a motion detector?

This would warn me when there is a delivery: package, groceries etc.

When I call someone, they always ask why do I have my caller ID

I went in to settings, phone, caller ID, tap on show my caller

I can't seem to turn on my caller ID.

Is there some way I can turn on my caller ID so when I call

   I have a XR with 17.4.1.

RE: Heading Level Access In Safari Browser

2024-05-31 Thread Mario Eiland
Use the rotor while in the Safari app and look for headings. Once you hear
headings then flick down with one finger and that should take you from heading
to heading. To go up flick up.
If you can't find the heading option in the rotor then you must add it in the
VoiceOver rotor settings.

Good luck!

Subject: Heading Level Access In Safari Browser

Hi Group,

I finally was able to change some settings in Safari Browser on the iPhone to
get it to display HTML files that are stored locally on the iPhone. I created
my modified Dice Football Game Play Sheet by using headings to more quickly
navigate from play list to play list. I have the lists separated into running
plays, kicking plays, passing plays and conversions at level one and the
various list of items such as short pass, long pass and screen pass for the
passing plays and the running plays such as left end run, right tackle play and
reverse at heading level two.

Is there any way to navigate by heading levels using a quick number scheme such
as is done on Windows desktops with quick key number navigation such as number
one for heading level one and number two for heading level two on the iPhone?

Thanks for any help.

RE: Whatsapp question

2024-06-17 Thread Mario Eiland
HI Marilyn,
Try this:
1. Tap Settings > Privacy.
2. Tap Default message timer.
3. Select 24 hours, 7 days, 90 days, or Off.
4. If you want to apply the timer to existing chats, tap "by selecting them"
and then tap the chats.

Turn on disappearing messages in a specific chat Anyone can turn on
disappearing messages in an individual chat. Once turned on, new messages in
the chat
will disappear after the duration you select.
1. Open a chat.
2. Tap the contact’s name.
3. Tap Disappearing messages.
• If prompted, tap Continue.
4. Select 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days under Message timer.

Hope that helps!

RE: Question about Voiceover?

2024-06-18 Thread Mario Eiland
Hi Candie,
Are you aware that you can isolate VoiceOver's volume by adding it to the
rotor, and instead of using the volume buttons on your iPhone you would use the
volume control on the rotor? Otherwise when you use the hard volume buttons of
the iPhone you turn up or down the volume to everything.
Try the following:
Go to settings > Accessibility > > VoiceOver > Rotor > Rotor Items > Volume
Swipe until you locate the volume option. Make sure that the Volume option is
selected and that should place it in the rotor. Now look for it on the rotor
and when you hear it announce either flick up to turn up or flick down to turn
down the volume.
I hope that helps!

Yes I have a difficult time hearing voice over. The voice or music on the other
end of the line is much louder, and when I turn the volume up to hear voice
over, the volume on the other end becomes louder drowning out voice over. I
haven't figured out how to fix this.

Don’t you just double-tap and hold on the second tap and listen for three tones

Hi All,

Running iOS17.5.1 on SE2022. We're upgrading our ADT security system and this
new system uses a different app titled, "Control."

I would like to change this app's name to ADT Control, is it possible to do
this? If so, how do I do it? I searched for ways to rename an app, but what's
being suggested is changing things I've never heard of. Thanks much.

Hello dear listers,
I posted my question on the BlindApple mailing list but got no replies or
comments. It sounds that there are no bluetooth keyboard users on that list.
Hopefully I will be luckier here.
I am a new user of bluetooth keyboard with VoiceOver on an iPad. Should I keep
the full keyboard access setting found under settings, accessibility,, full
keyboard access on or off? What are the advantages or disadvantages of keeping
this setting to off or on when using a bluetooth keyboard? Which setting do you
recommend?
I would appreciate your suggestions and help.
Cheers,

RE: A question for Bluetooth users

2024-06-26 Thread Mario Eiland
Hi Cris,
I am not Robert, but I also use a Bluetooth keyboard quite extensively. I have
never delt with the full keyboard feature before and I have been fine.
Regarding your question about using it either with an iPhone or iPad, I use it
with both although I don't recommend totally blind people to use an iPad since
it's a bit unwieldy and you have to cover a lot of more screen real estate when
navigating. I usually, recommend iPads for low vision folks so that they can
take advantage of the screen size when dealing with zooming in and out.

Thanks Robert. I tried to turn on the full Bluetooth Keyboard setting today to
try it and found it weird to use compared to when it is turned off. Since you
have been using Bluetooth Keyboard for many years, did you use on an iPhone or
with an iPad?

I can't answer that question. I don't use an iPad. I imagine the layout might
be a bit different from that of the iPhone since it's being used on a larger
screen and it takes advantage of the screen size. I presume you use the iPhone
version of WhatsApp? I find it pretty easy to navigate WhatsApp on the iPhone.

I use an iPad and I got used to it with time. As you indicated, an iPad can be
a drag in the beginning for VO users. I am wondering if you tried using the
desktop version of Whatsapp on your iPad. I find the chronology of chats very

RE: saving youtube videos to dropbox or thumb drive

2024-07-06 Thread Mario Eiland
Hi,

I use the following program to download YouTube audio and video files.

TCA-MediaDownloader

Download the program here.

https://drive.google.com/uc?id=18drXPIjAfjj_BjX1CKnAX1-pT3J4P7fP

 &export=download

When unarchiving (also known as unzipping) the .rar file, it has a password, it
is all lowercase and you

can simply select and copy it to the clipboard and paste it when the process
asks for the password:

Tecnoconocimientoaccesible

It is a program that does not need to be installed, simply unrar it into it's
own folder and run it's

executable.

You said you already downloaded them, as long as you know where they are just
go to the video, start playing it and find the Sghare button, then send it to
your Dropbox.

As for saving it on a thumb drive directly from an iPhone would require you to
have one of the USB drives which can plug directly into an iPhone, if you have
anything below an iPhone 15 this means the drive has to have a Lightning port.
Such drives usually come with an app and you would save it to the drive the
same way via the share sheet and then instead of selecting Dropbox, you would
select the app your thumb drive uses.

I did flick down while on a message & selected copy. I then went to a blank
text message edit field but the rotor did not have a paste option. There was a
text selection option but no paste there either. I know this is a pretty basic
thing but once I select copy on a message & go to a blank message to someone
else, how do I paste it there.

I did try the 3 finger quadruple tap & that seemed to work except for the link.

If you want to copy a text message you just have to flick down when you are on
the message you want and copy will be one of the rotor items.

It only copies individual messages in a conversation, however.

Apparently text selection is not available in messages. On the Action menu

otherwise there is the three finger quadruple tap to copy the last thing spoken

You only get text selection in edit fields or places where you can actually
select any text.

Have you tried, for example, in the Messages app or Mail app or in Notes? Open
a new Note and write something, then turn the rotor and I am pretty sure you
would find text selection.

RE: Is it possible to extract from a screen recording the audio track only?

2024-07-16 Thread Mario Eiland
Hello Keith,
I found this app that sounds like it would do what you are hoping to accomplish.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/media-converter-video-to-mp3/id1294207675

Media Converter — video to MP3
is a free online video converter that helps you convert any video to MP3 on
iPhone — hence the name. This free third-party app supports most of the audio
and video formats — and even saves the converted file on your iPhone for later
reference. Here's how to convert screen recording to MP3 on iPhone.
Step 1: To begin, open the Apple Store on your iPhone and search 'Media
Converter — video to MP3.' Install the application and locate the 'Extract
Audio'
option to get an MP3 file from the locally saved video file or screen
recording.
Open the third-party app and select the Extract Audio option
Step 2: Next, select 'Import Files' followed by 'My iPhone' to select the video
file and convert the screen recording to MP3.
Click Import Files followed by My iPhone
Step 3: Once done, select the 'Extract Audio' option and then select MP3 as the
output format.
Click Extract Audio to convert the file into MP3 format
That's it! The MP3 file will be automatically saved in 'My Creations.' If you
wish to save the MP3 file on your iPhone, select More > Save to Photos.
Click the More option followed by Save to Photos

Hope that gives you somewhere to start!

Hi Mario,
I was successful in converting two screen recording videos to MP3 audio using
the app you recommended. The process, for me, was a bit more convoluted than
you described… No doubt, probably my error. I’m sure it will become much
smoother as I work with the app some more.

RE: Trouble with Zell and Bank Of America app

2024-07-20 Thread Mario Eiland
HI Amy,
I had some issues the other day trying to send money to a friend. It kept
telling me that it experience some kind of error and to try again later. I just
ended up clearing my app switcher turned off and turned on my iPhone and tried
it again and then it worked. I know it sounds kind of silly, but who knows.

Good luck!

Subject: Trouble with Zell and Bank Of America app

Sent from my iPhone Hello all,
I have no difficulty paying people with Zelle. In general, I find the Bank of
America app quite accessible. However, I am now trying to request money from
someone who does not use Zelle easily. I can get to the screen and can find
that contact, and there is Zelle credentials. However, once I enter the amount
I am requesting, I swipe to a button that reads deposit to select account.
However, if I try to activate the button, nothing happens. Interestingly, my
sited husband indicates that there is no such button at that spot on the
screen. I have tried connecting with Bank Of America employees to no avail. Any
suggestions greatly appreciated. I’ve been at this for quite some time today
without success.
Amy.

RE: Typing Spanish in PC

2024-07-20 Thread Mario Eiland
You can also do the following:
Before you type the letter you want to modify, for example, adding an accent to
the letter a, you can press Ctrl+' (apostrophe" and then type the vowel and it
will at the acute to it.
For the ñ you will press Ctrl+Shift+tilde, which is to the right of the 1 on
the number row and follow it by pressing n. If you wanted to make the letter a
capital letter then simply press shift with that letter.

Ios17.6 doesn't stop drop in volume. If I start listening to the BBC Sounds app
or a podcast, the volume drops after a few minutes. The solution is to lock the
screen - and the volume jumps back up!

if I did or didn’t read their messages.

This setting is under Settings > Messages.

RE: mp3s to apple playlist?

2024-08-07 Thread Mario Eiland
HI Tom,

It sounds like you just want to add a few tracks of your own to a playlist you
created via Apple Music?

Have you installed iTunes on your computer? If you have, make sure you have
signed in with your Apple ID.

Once you have signed in with your Apple ID you should be able to tab to where
it says Library Sidebar Tree view. Once you get here arrow down or up until you
find the playlist where you want to add your songs.

Once you get there press F6 until you hear “Name of Playlist” table. Find your
tracks and copy them into the clipboard with Ctrl + C and paste them here. It
will say something like

iTunes dialog
iCloud Music Library playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud Music
Library. If you continue, New Wave will be removed from your iCloud Music
Library and will only be available on this computer.
Remove from iCloud Button

Go ahead and press spacebar or enter on the button that says “remove from
iCloud” and you’ll be fine. And that’s it. Now, you should be able to go to
your playlist in your Music app on your iPhone and see the tracks you added.

Hope that helps!

I have added many tracks this way and created many playlist from my own cd’s
this way.

If you have any further questions email me at eila...@gmail.com
 .

Good luck,

Mario

Subject: mp3s to apple playlist?

Hi,

Is it possible to do the following? I have a particular playlist in my music
folder that I created using songs from Apple Music and actually also downloaded
them to my phone. There are a few songs I really love that are not on apple
music but that I have as mp3s on my PC computer with JAWS. Is there a way to
somehow import those particular mp3s to my phone so that I can then add them to
the specific playlist? I don’t know if iTunes would work but is that something
that can be used on my computer? I’d need some good directions though.

If there are easier ways, I’d love to know. Could I also get them from 1drive
or something?

Tom

HI Sandy,

Let’s try the following.

Go to:

Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Verbosity > Punctuation > Active
Punctuation > (It will show you what your current setting is there. Mine is set
to “Some”. Most likely yours is either set to most or all.)

Best luck!

to create a shortcut through Be My Eyes, it all went wrong, and now I have
VoiceOver reading all the full stops, et cetera, I have tried to get rid, but I
can't, can someone tell me what setting I have to change to get back to simple

editing, I do look for it, this is just when reading text…
Thank you so much for any help, Sandy and Z

thank you for this, I have gone to voice settings, verbosity, punctuation, and

it! Every,, every:, every., And it never did before! I don't know what I've
