Re: iTunes Radio
Thanks for such a fun experience-letter. My own tastes must not cost as much. I bought A horse Named Bill, sung by the poet Carl Sandburg. Fifty cents. I was tired of trying to find it, even though I was fairly sure I had one somewhere. Then I looked at some violin piece played by Rachel Barton Pine of Chicago. It was only 89 cents, but I didn't buy it. I checbed yet another classical piece which was 99 cents. But yesterday I got a couple beautiful violin Cd's. One was one cent and another 2 cents, but each had 4 dollars shipping. Now I know why I could not get to iTunes radio. It is in the music part, not in iTunes proper. Is that right? Because, for the last few tries, I could not get to my opera channel. And I had had such fun voting for what I liked and occasionally saying: Never play this again. Why, it is so very arbitry. And so much fun. But when I went to iTunes, my genre stations were not being found. So you've showed me where they are. I'd better stop. More another time. - Original Message - From: Alan Paganelli alanandsuza...@earthlink.net To: viphone@googlegroups.com Date: Saturday, September 28, 2013 5:47 pm Subject: iTunes Radio Hi All, I finally got around to playing with iTunes radio which is in the music folder of ios 7. Re: iTunes Radio
well, that is not quite accurate. because I did not create the opera station, nor the one for medieval and renaissance; but it allows me to thumbs-up or vote for a track; play more like this. and it also tells me to vote never play this again, if I want to. of course, I don't know if that will really be taken into consideration, but these were stations that already existed. So my experience is a bit different from yours. BestPen On 9/28/2013 9:17 PM, Christopher Chaltain wrote: You can also train iTunes Radio to feed you music you like. Re: How to shuffle in iTunes radio
there may be a way to have a couple of genres running at the same time. I was enamored of their opera channel, and they sure won't let me get there anymore, somehow. but it's all right. iTunes is only 1 strand of my iPod radio. I paid to join calm radio on the PC which never did work for me, but it is wonderful for a blind user on the iPod; but expensive. Well, I think it is. But it has lots of sub-categories in the classical genre. Okay, this ramble has reached a conclusion. And I hope to hear about an inexpensive football source. I put one in, which was free, but the choices did not speak; it was a shame, for it started out speaking. There was an A section with the NFL teams whose names began with A; B for the B's, etc. After I had selected the Chicago Bears, there were 2 stations. Well, i picked the first one and it started playing hard-rock, for, of course, there was no game then. But I could hardly turn that off and get back out to the menu with the A B C's. So I just deleted the app. Isn't that the way to do it--if at first you don't succeed, give up? Grin. On 9/27/2013 11:39 PM, Ricardo Walker wrote: Hi, I don’t think there is a way. Re: turning on a device from completely off
Just to clarify: I did have it plugged in with the upgrade. I must have waited forever because I went away and when I came back the phone had upgraded but was off. sorry, it's an iPod. It's that not knowing that is the trouble. Sure, it turns on, but you wait 30 seconds. And while you're doing that wait for 30 seconds you say to yourself: but did I actually get the thing turned on? Now I'm shutting up. and shutting down. All the best, and pardon my excessive mailing. BestPen On 9/25/2013 11:24 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hi Penny, AS John said, if you update over the air, eventually Voiceover should have come on by itself, you may not have waited long enough. Having said this, it is always best practice to empty the app switcher and doing a restart of the phone before doing an upgrade and it is not a bad idea to have the phone plugged in when you do an iOS upgrade. If there is lots of juice left it shouldn't be a problem, but maybe you forgot that you only had 15% left. If that happens and you start an upgrade and half way through the phone dies it is probably not a good thing. The lack of any sort of feedback during part of the over the air upgrade process is the reason why I simply prefer to update via iTunes, at least I get to hear the various USB disconnect and connect sounds as well as check on the status of the update with Jaws. if I do a restart because I think something isn't working right, I always empty the app switcher as well. Keep in mind that if your phone is turned off and you plug in the cable it will turn itself on automatically after the normal boot time. Lastly, if you do turn your phone off it does probably not hurt a bit to hold the power button down for 4 or 5 seconds as many here pointed out, but it also isn't necessary. Push the button and hold it for a second or so, think one one thousand if you like as you push it, then let it go. Your phone will boot up and depending on the model at the end of 20 to 30 seconds you will hear Voiceover come on. Re: Siri
That is very odd. I use the british accent, and siri understands my american speech. I don't doubt what you're saying, Jonathan, but my own experience has not mirrored it; however, maybe British accents would confuse an American Siri more than American accents would confuse a British Siri. Now I'm clearing out of here before something dreadful happens. I have not had the courage to upgrade, by the way. Re: Compass directions 101, was: getting the most out of Blind square
You know, I thought that Blind Square was 15 dollars. I find it's 23 or perhaps 24. Perhaps one day it will go back on sale and then I'll try to get it. I can afford it, but I just don't do enough traveling to make it a necessity; it would be fun to play with; so I'll wait to perhaps a sale. Thanks for the compass readings. You're nothing if you're not thorough! Thanks so much. On 8/5/2013 11:15 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hello Penny, Krister and List, OK, so I just did some experimenting with the compass and how you can hold your phone to get the correct reading. If I want directions I actually use an app called Voice Compass rather than the stock Compass app. Voice Compass has it's own male voice which is of very good quality, actually I'd say it's a human voice which plays wave files or whatever since all it has to say is North, East, South, West and the ones in between like Northwest, Southeast etc. That's only 8 pieces of information so it would be easy to do. The app does also display the actual degrees on the screen so if you want more accuracy than North or Northeast than you can check the screen. If anybody wants to check out Voice Compass, here is the link, it is 99 Cents: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/a+-voice-compass/id320952364?mt=8 Anyhow, back to directions and how to hold the phone. I know my living room window points due east, so here it goes: If I hold my iPhone flat in my hand with the top edge where the headphone jack is against the window, Voice Compass correctly says East. If I flip the iPhone around and hold the bottom edge with the charging port against the window I do, not surprisingly, get the announcement West. Now, if I hold the iPhone vertically, but still with the top edge against the window, I still get East. It doesn't matter if the touch screen is facing to the left (9 o'clock) or to the right (3 o'clock) as long as the phone's top is pointing the right way. Once again, if I hold the phone vertically but flip it so the bottom edge is against the window, I get the West announcement. Now, holding the phone vertically in front of me which means I am holding the entire back of the phone where the camera lens is flat against the window with the phone right side up (home button on the bottom), the compass still works as it should and announces East. If I flip the phone upside down so that the back of the phone is against the window, but the home button is pointing up and the headphone jack is pointing down, the compass now reverses and announces West. Now, for the last 2 positions. I am once again holding the phone right side up (headphone jack pointing straight up, home button on the bottom), but I am now holding the phone with the touch screen facing away from me and flat against the window. Voice Compass now tells me West. Lastly, I once again flip the phone upside down, I am still holding the touch screen away from me and pressed against the window, but now the headphone jack is again down and the home button and connector port is up. Voice Compass once again tells me East. The conclusion is the for the compass to work correctly, the phone can be held flat or on edge as long as the top of the phone where the headphone jack is points in the direction you want to know you are facing. This means you could have the phone on a belt clip holster, but for compass directions to work, you must be able to turn the belt clip so the phone is held in landscape position and the headphone jack has to point in the direction you are walking with the home button towards your back. What I found out with this test and hadn't realized as much before is that you could also have your phone in a chest pocket in either one of 2 orientations: 1. With the touchscreen against your chest and right side up 2. With the back of the phone against your chest and the touch screen pointing in the direction you are going and upside down. The same would apply if you had a neck holder like this one: http://www.iphone-lanyard.com/Site/iPhone_Holder.html Here it would make sense to have the phone in the holder upside down and hanging with the back of the phone against your chest or stomach (depending on how long you adjust the neck strap). This would give you accurate compass direction and it would give you easy access to the touch screen as well. I hope I didn't confuse people with this and that it might help some in deciding how to best carry their phone. Re: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
There is another way to do it; you could press your button, but know that it would not activate for 3 seconds or something, just time enough for you to get quiet or not move, or whatever. Just my two cents, and probably not worth that much. If you're using the phone at home, you could figure out a steady way to use it and not purchase a tripod or some other kind of holding device. On 7/25/2013 10:13 AM, Dan Beaver wrote: Hi all, I thought I'd get your opinions before I go chatting with the developers of these kinds of apps. I have found that one of the biggest difficulties I have is holding the phone steady enough to take clear pictures. I personally can't afford purchasing devices to hold the phone so I came up with another idea. I have found that I can take pretty good pics if the phone is resting on a table top or something. However, I still tend to jiggle the phone when tapping the button to take a pic or start the video and the like. My thought here is asking the developers to add the ability to activate pic taking or video starting and stopping via a sound. this would enable us to position the phone and then clap our hands or whistle or something to activate it. I figure that if you folks feel this would be helpful enough I'd start the discussion with the developers and see if they would be open to such a change. So, what do you all think? Thanks. hd radio
Hi. I downloaded one more of these big radio things. I thought it was radio.com; but it comes across as hd radio. it's free, but when it opens, you have to decline something. Nevertheless, it's really accessible. there are at least 150 inspirational stations; 200 classical ones; and I don't know whatAll else. I really like the sound. Perhaps it's been covered, recovered, and discovered a million times. but it's new to me, and I really like it. It's been running for hours without dropping out or anything strange. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: HD Radio
I think that I went to the app store and put in radio. I saw things I already have, songza, pandora (the free one), and others. but I believe at the top of the screen was something called radio.com and it was free. Travel apps in general
I'm new to all this. I hear you discussing all these apps that show roads and streets walking or in the car. How does that all work? Do you just download the app and learn? Or do you first have to download something such as google maps ? Or would the addition of some other kinds of GPS that I haven't even thought of make these apps you're discussing more effective? Or, do they just work all by themselves without additions? Thanks, and sorry to be a pest. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. keyboard
Hi. I bought a nifty little bluetooth keyboard which pairs automatically with my iPod. Is there some spot where I can just play with the keyboard and learn where things are? Can I do that in either notes or reminders--just hit keys to find out what they are? Thanks. There are times when the keyboard is just a God-send. Thanks for any help. Re: keyboard
Hi. thing is, my email is not set up. i don't know how to set it up yet. I took the bluetooth keyboard about 15 feet away from the iPod. I thought i might be able to pair it with my PC. All of a sudden the iPod starts talking. I have learned a good deal. But I have got the keyboard locked. it's the thing left of the spaceBar. Well, it used to toggle locked and unlocked; now it's just stuck on keyboard locked. any help appreciated. Thanks. Seigard (sp?) mentioned blind square would do this, and I've found that Ariadne GPS will too, as long as it's open, in the front, and VO is turned on. The Start Monitoring button is what's needed to activate this feature. I'm running Ariadne on an iPhone 4 btw. On Jun 25, 2013, at 11:32 AM, Donald L. I apologize for not saving the message in question as I cannot quote it or even approximate what the respondent said. But, if I remember it correctly, I understood the message to say that none of the GPS programs would verbalize the street names unless one were using an iPhone 4S or 5. I want to be sure I understand this. Am I to understand that if I am running either a 3GS or 4, there are no GPS programs which will verbalize the names of streets as one is approaching? Thanks.
