there may be a way to have a couple of genres running at the same time.
I was enamored of their opera channel, and they sure won't let me get
there anymore, somehow.
but it's all right. iTunes is only 1 strand of my iPod radio. I paid
to join calm radio on the PC which never did work for me, but it is
wonderful for a blind user on the iPod; but expensive. Well, I think it
is.
But it has lots of sub-categories in the classical genre.
Okay, this ramble has reached a conclusion. And I hope to hear about an
inexpensive football source. I put one in, which was free, but the
choices did not speak; it was a shame, for it started out speaking.
There was an A section with the NFL teams whose names began with A; B
for the B's, etc.
After I had selected the Chicago Bears, there were 2 stations. Well, i
picked the first one and it started playing hard-rock, for, of course,
there was no game then. But I could hardly turn that off and get back
out to the menu with the A B C's.
So I just deleted the app. Isn't that the way to do it--if at first you
don't succeed, give up?
Grin.

Hi All,

Forgive me if this has already been discussed. Has anyone else noticed
when sending a text message to a contact, that is from the send
message link on a contact's screen, the edit cursor is now being
placed in the to field rather than in the blank message area? This
despite that the contact name has already been entered in the to
field.

I have only seen this since updating to ios7 and was wondering if
others have seen it too. If so, I will bring it to the attention of
apple accessibility.

Thanks,

Hi Kimber,

This is by now a documented and confirmed bug in iOS 7 and has to do with
that entire hypersensitivity of the touch screen. The only thing you can
do

and it may or may not help a bit is to go to Accessibility Settings and
turn
on Reduced Motion which is towards the bottom of the main accessibility
settings screen. Some people reported it helps a bit. I would strongly
encourage you to take the time and report this to accessibil...@apple.com
since it is probably one of the more annoying bugs yet.

I would also try and do a very precise swipe and then keep your hand well
away from the screen for a bit longer than usual because what seems to be
happening is that after you do the swipe you don't even have to quite
touch

the screen for the touch screen to sense your hand and somehow repeat the
gesture.

If you haven't turned on Reduced Motion yet, I suggest you remove all
apps

from the app switcher, then turn it on and then shut down your phone and
reboot it after 30 or so seconds. Not sure if this will help, but I can
guaranty it won't hurt.

Best regards,
Sieghard

This is a strange problem, so I hope I can explain it adequately.

When I do a three finger swipe to move from say the home page to page 2,
the
focus pauses on page 2 for only a second or less then jumps to page 3. In
order to get to page 2 I have to swipe back and place my finger quickly
on

one of the icons before the page can run away.
This happenswith other pages too. Say I want to go from page 4 to page 5.
The same type of brief focus then the jump to page 6.

It's very annoying and I'm not sure how to stop it.

Has anyone else seen this? Or does anyone have a clue what is going on?
Might it have anything to do with the pages not being filled but having
only
a few apps?

Looking for help here.

Thanks in advance,
Kimber

Re: VO skipping pages on my 4s

2013-09-23 Thread Sandra Heaton
Yes I know exactly what you mean because I am having the same problem as
well and I have to do exactly what you are doing putting a finger on the
icon.

It doesn't matter what you do, its very hypo sensitive. I don't think there
is very much you can do at the moment except just try and persevere with it.

Subject: VO skipping pages on my 4s

This is a strange problem, so I hope I can explain it adequately.

When I do a three finger swipe to move from say the home page to page
2, the focus pauses on page 2 for only a second or less then jumps to
page 3. In order to get to page 2 I have to swipe back and place my
finger quickly on one of the icons before the page can run away.
This happenswith other pages too. Say I want to go from page 4 to page
5. The same type of brief focus then the jump to page 6.

It's very annoying and I'm not sure how to stop it.

Has anyone else seen this? Or does anyone have a clue what is going
on? Might it have anything to do with the pages not being filled but
having only a few apps?

Looking for help here.

Thanks in advance,
Kimber

  Hi Everyone,

Many people have suggested that turning on reduced motion might help with the
Voice Over bugs in IOS7. I have turned on reduced motion, followed by turning
the phone off and back on. I can't tell any difference. I guess that we are
just going to have to live with it until the next IOS update, when they will
hopefully fix it. Has anyone else found that reduced motion helps?

  Thanks,

Re: Problems with the Facebook app

2013-09-22 Thread Sandra Heaton
Hi All,

I really don't recommend you upgrade to the latest version of facebook. The
notifications are there but instead of being at the top, they are now at the
bottom but vo won't read them at all. It is also running a lot slower with or
without vo.

I do hope that FB will be able to fix this problem soon as it would seem to me
that with every upgrade they seem to be going backwards not forwards. It seems
to be getting more complicated in my view.

  Hi folks:

I am using IOS7 and the last version of the Facebook app (it was updated

I am no longer able to read my notifications inside the app, don't know if it
is a problem of accessibility of the app or if I am doing something wrong. It
looks like VO identifies something on the screen but is unable to read it.

Is anyone having the same problem?

Hi,

You have to go to the bottom of the screen and on the left you will find the

and your message goes in to the trash folder as there doesn't appear to be a
delete button not that I can find.

Dear list
Have a question regarding Gmail, I set up Gmail on my iPhone 4S running iOS
7. The only thing I cannot figure out is is there a way to delete email
messages like before with iOS 6 where you could turn the archive option off
(in settings , mail) and the message would just be deleted when you pressed
the delete button? If so I am not finding that option. the only option I
find is to archive the message

Anyone's assistance would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

A few questions for those with iOS 7

One when using voice over in the mail app and double tapping on the to field
if you type a letter in the to field you are presented with the most
recently contacted individuals that begin with that letter. Question is:
how does one get to the next contact that begins with that letter for
example, if I am typing the letter A and the first contact name is Alex and
you want to get to the next contact that begins with the letter A how do you
do it with voiceover using ios 7?

Two what are containers?

3. Why is it that you have to set up Gmail as an exchange account in order
to be able to delete emails, if you set it up using Gmail itself in the mail
app you're forced to archived them and then delete them why is this?

Four. Am I to understand now that voice over will not repeat what Siri says,
is this a new feature?

5 any ideas, as to how to improve battery life with iOS 7

I noticed that in iOS 7, when I swipe around on the screen, voiceover
seems to skip items. It also seems to be much more sensitive than before.
Is there a new method that I need to know about when flicking around for
the screen? This is on an iPhone 4S. Thanks,

Hi,

Yes you can! you need to go to settings and scroll till you find pass code and
go in there and you can turn it off. I made the mistake today by putting a
passcode in but then I found it to be a nuisance every time I unlocked my
phone! so I just turned it off.

very well and plus! I don't like things that go inside my ears.

Thank you though for taking the time.

Re: Aftershokz headphones.

2013-08-29 Thread Sandra Heaton

Lisa,

Thank you for your reply. Its just as I thought. I just thought I would
just ask the question anyway.

I think you are right in saying that about Bluetooth I would agree with you.

I don't think I would want to mess about with two headsets well not at the
same time anyway. So I guess I will just stick with my purchase and just
use it for my trekker breeze. I won't go anywhere without it at the moment,
I am having to use a long cane at the moment as I am still waiting for a new
guide dog. Heaven knows when that is likely to be.

sorry I know I have gone off track just a little.

But thanks for your input.

Sandra, as far as I know, the Trekker Breeze doesn't have the capability
to send/receive any kind of Bluetooth signal unless you're talking about
the older version that ran on a PDA, and in that case, I have no clue if
the Aftershokx would work. I know you couldn't hear your phone and the
Breeze at the same time unless you could pair them both and switch between
them seamlessly, and let's face it, Bluetooth isn't that reliable enough
of the time, at least not for me.

You could use the wired version of the Aftershokz with your Breeze because
they use a regular stereo headphone jack so fit into the breeze where the
external speaker would go.

Then you could use another Bluetooth headset with your phone along with
your Aftershokx. You'd have to deal with two different headsets, though
because I don't think you'd like having to wear both the Aftershokx
Bluetooth headset and the wired Aftershokx headset because they both fit
the same way, which is why I'd suggest a single earhook Bluetooth speaker
for the phone portion of the set up.

I have a Breeze and I use it still even with my iPhone because of the same
issues. I can use the Bluetooth headset, but then I need to be listening
for two different audio sources in addition to my surroundings, so I feel
a bit limited as to when and where I can use them both safely.

Hello Christine,
I too feel your frustration with the Face Book app. Unfortunately, I
don't have the answers to all your questions, but one thing I have
noticed is with the Back Button in Notifications, your not imagining it,
Yes it is missing.
I had my Daughter take a look at the screen, just incase the button might
have been moved to a newer location on the screen, I think lately, the
App might have been updated and the Back button is no longer there.
So, what I found does work, is to double tap on the Notification
Heading and that shouldprompt you out of that screen and allow you
access to the main screen again.
Try this, it should work, I know I was stuck in that one screen myself,
and it was a pain to get out.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Subject: Facebook app frustrations

All righty, fellow Facebook folks: I am trying to figure out why, and more
importantly, if there is a workaround for the following issues:
1. Liking something sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. (I find this
is true both on the phone and on my Mac.)
2. When I want to see who liked a post, sometimes it will show me, and
other times it will go to the one page of the last person to like. There
does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to this.
3. When I check my notifications, on the phone, there does not seem to be
a back button; am I missing something?
4. Sometimes when I want to like on someone's page because of something
shared, I can only like the shared link on its original page, not on my
friend's page.
5. There are times when I click on a friend's page to read further
something posted, and the app does nothing at all.
6. Sometimes I cannot get to the posted link, or read the comments. (I
realize some people's privacy settings might not permit me to see their
comments, but it is unlikely that this is true of all of the people on the
larger sites I am referring to.)

Any workarounds, explanations, and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Happy Father's Day to those to whom it applies.
Christine

We are probably the only two.

I don't send e-mail on my phone, it has an e-mail account that only a
couple

of people know about, I use it to send messages from work where I need to
enter contact info etc. If I were not working where I had to get 100% of
my
attention to what I am doing I might feel differently but as of this
writing

I don't do Facebook, Twitter or receive a ton of e-mail on my phone, and I
discourage texting during my working hours. It does not stop my husband
or

one friend, unfortunately and I have near the end of a day when I am
involved in a report I need to finish before I leave turned off the phone
completely but I would rather not do that, I want a phone when I am at
work,

mostly to stay connected with my husband who has been a frequent flyer in
the hospital. I don't want a lot of messages, beeps, and other sounds
interrupting me during those hours.

I could mess with do not disturb, I suppose but, it is easier not to do
those accounts and to keep my e-mail on the phone to a minimum since I
don't

like typing on the keyboard all that much even after nearly two years, I
can, of course, but would rather do most of my communicating on my
computer.

Voice Over it annoyed him so much. I know I am in the minority here but
I

prefer the standard typing mode, I type all day so sliding around all the

my

I

After you click to take a picture does the app say Picture 1 Take or any

Subject: Information on how TapTapSee works

Hi all,

I think it is important we keep in mind how this free object recognizer app
works. Its unfortunate that the details are not provided in app store. This
TapTapSee app seems to work by employing a type of crowd sourcing. In other
words, when you take a picture it is actually human beings responding. This
is how it knows it is a dog or man on the picture. This also may explain why

only general descriptions of objects are provided such as black shoe,
$20, yellow blouse, Lysol wipes, etc. I'm not certain yet that any
sort of database of known objects is employed as might be the case with bar
code scanners.

Please try the following for best results:
*use under good lighting conditions. (I believe most current update
automatically turns on flash if it is needed.)
*try to take one picture at a time and give enough time so the person on
other side can send back their description
*Try placing eye of camera at center of object or what will be the picture
to be recognized.
*If too proximal to object then back off and if too distal then bring camera

a little closer.

*Personal suggestion: try not to get too picture happy and snap pictures of
rocks, sand, or other frivolous objects as those individuals out there
recognizing objects might feel as though they are wasting their time
describing meaningless things.

Sorry if I insult anyone by changing the subject field its just that I
thought I would change it to accurate reflect the topic of this thread.

No Carol, you just take a pic and the app does a very good job of
identifying the object. You don't need to do anything else.

I think this app is one of the best I have ever downloaded. Here are a few

of the things I've tested it on with great success, trying it out for a
class of students thinking of buying iPhones.

Identified a ten pound note, identified shampoo and conditioner bottles,
told me colour of shirts, told me pattern on duvet, identified jar of
coffee, identified can of coke, read title of CD, and more.

Been chatting to others on Twitter and the overall verdict is that this
 app is great.

I don't know how it works, just that it does, and brilliantly.

The Ocado mobile app.

2012-12-14 Thread Sandra Heaton
Hi All,

Just updated the ocado app and I find it not very accessible. I am really
annoyed because I have done 3 shops on the mobile app and it was working
perfectly well. Just updated the latest version and I am totally lost with it.
Has anybody else tried this app at all and if you have, what do you make of
it?

I feel like I need to write a letter to them or something. I thought when
things were updated there should be improvements in this case, they have gone
backwards.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions from any of you.

Thanks in advance.

take care all and a very merry Christmas.

Hello all Uk members.
Yesterday I downloaded the app for my bank, Lloyds Tsb, onto my iPhone 4.
It is very accessible and allows me to for example review my accounts,
transfer money from one account to another, etc etc. I should say you do
need to be a registered internet banking member in order to use this app
since you need to log in with your information. But it's certainly very
handy and saves going onto my banking website on my Pc or mac. The app is
free and can be found in the Apps store. Search for Lloyds Tsb.

Enjoy!

Hi List,

I wonder if anyone can help. I want to assign a certain ringtone to a
person, but every time I select it and save, no matter what I do, it reverts
back to the default setting, I have even tried deleting the contact and putting
it in again as a new contact then selecting the rington I want for that person
but then it just goes back to the default setting. can anyone help? or have a
clue what I need to do?

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Re: Problem with rington.

2012-09-25 Thread Sandra Heaton

Hi Cheryl,

This is what happens, I go in to the contact, then I pick the ringtone that I
wanted for that contact, then I save the contact. then when my contact rings
me from his mobile it goes back to the default setting you know the ringtone
that I have set for anyone else ringing. I go back in to the contact and it
shows the assigned ringtone so I have no idea what to think. That's how it is
Cheryl.

Do you have any other ideas. Is there something I am not doing, or perhaps I
am doing something that I shouldn't be doing smile?

Thanks for the help.

2012-09-23 Thread Sandra Heaton

Hi John,

What I have done is tried another ringtone that I bought around the same
time and assigned that to home, so I called my mobile from the home phone
and that worked, then I tried the ringtone which I wanted for my friend and
did the same thing, assigned it to home and it worked. I tried a different
ringtone for the person I wanted it to be assigned to and that person called
on the mobile but it went back to the default setting. Its something to do
with ringing from mobile to mobile because it doesn't seem to work with
different ringtones and we both have the same iphone it has just all come to
light since the update the other day. Maybe its a bad file I don't know.

Do you have any more suggestions?

Hi List,

I wonder if anyone can help. I want to assign a certain ringtone to a
person, but every time I select it and save, no matter what I do, it
reverts
back to the default setting, I have even tried deleting the contact and
putting it in again as a new contact then selecting the rington I want
for
that person but then it just goes back to the default setting. can
anyone

help? or have a clue what I need to do?

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Are you trying to use a custom ring tone? If so, that is the problem. I can
use any of the factory tones, but if I try to use a custom tone, it switches
back to the last factory tone I had used.
I think this needs to be reported as a bug.

If you go in to settings and go to general there is something that says,
software update if you tap on that, it will either tell you that there is a
software update or it will just say you're software is up to date.

There is a piano tuning app called clear tune and it does do a reasonable scale
but I am not sure how the screen works with voiceover. You would have to give

Hi Scott,

Thanks for that. Of course I will keep you posted and I am so glad that I
am not cluttering up the list. I am a bit shy really of saying the wrong
thing sometimes.

I would say though with this app, you do have to think about it a bit, but
voiceover does work quite nicely with it. Even though on some of the pages
it doesn't have marked buttons you know when it says savings account button
you just press savings account and it takes you there. Its well worth
looking at. I myself am not a very techy person and I have no sight but I
have managed to use this app.

Re: deleting reminders.

2012-08-28 Thread Sandra Heaton

Hi Jennifer,

If you go in to the reminder that you want to delete, if you go to the
bottom of the screen you should find a delete button that should do it for
you.

Hope this helps.

How can i remove a reminder? IT is not a recurring one, just one that has
been completed.

Any idea how?

it is amazing what it thinks they said. Only one example here:

Dictated: The pupils are equal, round and reactive.
Speech Rec: The pupils are around the rectum.

Someone must have a outlook on life I guess.

As a former transcriptionist, my feeling is that the jury is still out on
voice recognition dictation. On many lists, I have seen examples of Siri's
work. Sometimes, it is all right, but it never corrects things which are
repeted such as generating Juaneta for Juanita or just throwing odd words
into the mix. This is why there are still a few transcriptionist editing
this type of dictation, a chore I didn't want in any way, shape or form.

Hopefully, this technology, be it Siri, or something else will get better,
but it must be capable of understanding so many languages and accents that
this is going to be a tall order.

I just received an email from a friend which she had dictated, and she was
having a devil of a time with it. It did, however, catch a few cuss words
precisely!

Smiles,

Dianne

I am one that has not yet installed fleksy and what I use most from Siri

the dictate feature where I use the dictate button on the software

My experience lately has not been any real issue with accuracy, but quite
a

frequent issue with getting it to come back with the results from what was

with

the result. It's hard to say if the accuracy issue is an extension of the
issue of no response and they are quite related or not. Yeah, yeah they
have

been using the beta thing as an excuse to have no standards to measure

it was months ago. Not much of a quality job on that in my opinion.

Siri, is a beta, and in my experience a very poor beta.
When it works, it is brilliant, but it doesn't work most of the time

This has nothing to do with Fleksy. I had these problems way before
Fleksy was even talked about, let alone released.

Hi Mike,

Navigon is OK to a point it is not as good as a trekker breeze. But it is
very handy if you want to know where you are. Although it doesn't speak the
names of streets as you are going along, but, you can put a postcode in and
it will take you to your destination. Its not perfect by any means but its
better than having nothing at all. Whether it will improve as time goes by

  Hello John and others,

Yes, Navigon can be used in Pedestrian mode. I agree with Raul, Navigon is a
good app and works reasonably well with Voiceover, but it has a bit of a
learning curve and I think most people who post on here that it's useless and
is not Voiceover friendly just haven't taken the time to play around with it.
Below is a bit of a write-up I sent to somebody else a while ago and maybe you
find it useful, I am giving some examples which were relevant for that list
member and I haven't changed them because it really doesn't matter which places
I use as an example. Also, the descriptions of screens and settings I use are
based on the latest version of Navigon.

Before you give up on Navigon it really is important to understand the app.
As somebody pointed out before, you can input a route by entering in an address
or a POI which typically is a restaurant, gas station, store etc. If you want
to enter an address you can’t enter the entire address at once, e.g. you can’t
just type 1234 Washington Street into the edit field, it is a multi-step
process where first you pick the Map (if you have several installed you may
have to pick Florida etc.). Once that is done it asks you for the city. You
live in Pensacola, so if you start typing “Pensa” Pensacola should show up in a
list, the fewer letters you type the more options are on the list, for example,
if you live somewhere where you have towns like Clifton, Clydsdale, Clearwater,
Clearfield, Clearbrook, if you were to type “cl, all of these would be in the
list, if you type “c l e”, only the 3 choices starting with “clear” show in the
list and if you type “clearw” only Clearwater would be left. You can, at any
time, check the list and double tap on the city you want if it is in the list.
Once you do that the next screen comes up and this says “Street in Pensacola
text field”, as long as you selected Pensacola as your city. If you keep
flicking right you see a list of all streets in Pensacola sorted
alphabetically. Double tap the edit field so you can start entering text and
enter, in your case, “St” or “Star” and then make sure “Stark Avenue” or “Stark
Ave” is listed and double tap to select it.
Especially with streets it is important to pick from the list since you never
know if the complete name is “Stark Ave”, “Stark Avenue” etc. In some towns you
may have the same street name with a “W” or “E” at the end for “West” and
“East”, but if you typed the name spelling out “West” it may not recognize it
because it only wants “W”. Once you see your street on the list, double tap it
and now you have the option to either enter a house number or cross
street/intersection. VoiceOver announces “Text Field is Editing, Character
Mode, No/Intersection in Stark Avenue”. Once again this is assuming you
selected Stark Avenue and that your rotor setting is set to character, not word.

If you flick right, you’ll find a list of intersections listed and if you
double tap on one it would navigate to that intersection. Anyhow, enter your
house number and press the “Done” button at the very bottom right of the
onscreen keyboard.

Now the very top left option will read like this:

  No. Back Button

This means if you double tap here it will go back one screen back to where
you can enter the number. Pressing back on that screen will go back to where
you can enter/select the street name, back again will go to the city etc.

If you flick right once you will have the “Start Navigation” button. Flick
right once more and it will read you the full address with city, zip code etc.
that you entered.

Press “Start Navigation”, then flick right on the next screen, here you have
your second “Start Navigation”. If you flick right again here (you would have
to do this fairly quickly, it will give you one or more distances. These are
the possible routes you can select. If you press “Start Navigation”, it will
select whatever preference you have chosen, e.g. Shortest, Fastest, Scenic etc.
This is somewhere in Settings and I typically have this set to “Shortest”.

If you don’t do anything for maybe 10 seconds, it will start navigation
automatically based on your preferences. Now start walking and it should start
giving you voice announcements on where to turn etc. If you touch the screen at
the very bottom just up from the Home Key (where you normally would touch to
unlock your phone), it may say a street name and typically this is the name of
whichever street you turn on at your first turn. Flick left once here and it
will give you a distance and that is the distance to that turn, if you double
tap the distance it repeats

You know, in all seriousness, the cell phone has more bacteria than the
flusher of a men's toilet.

Check this out.

If the idea is for easy access you know Scottevest even makes shirts with
inside pockets and not to be left out, for you gents you can stuff yours

Hi Annie, I would be worried about hanging something so heavy around my
neck. I know that in your hand it doesn't feel so heavy but day after
day of
just that amount of weight hanging around my neck would worry me over
time.

Hi.

Does anybody here on this list know of a hanger for the IPhone, that
allows

you to wear your IPhone around the neck.

Best regards Annie.

I don't think anyone will snatch it if its in its case I suppose it would
depend on whether you are wearing a jacket. You could always put it inside
your jacket and zip it up couldn't you.

but how is this different from carrying your iPhone any other way, e.g.
common sense?

I'm interested in such a lanyard for use around the house, like when I'm
doing laundry or the dishes, and I want to use my ear buds and keep my
hands free. I'm not worried about anyone snatching my iPhone from me in
my own house! :-)

When out about about, I don't see why you couldn't keep your iPhone on a
lanyard under your shirt or jacket. This seems more secure than say
holding it in my hand or an easily picked pocket.
