Requesting recommendations for an app to learn essential Spanish to aid when travelling, and a translation app

2015-07-11 Thread Sharon Ballantyne

Hi All,

I am being sent from Canada to a conference in Lima Peru next month. I will
have benefit of a translator for the conference proceedings.

I am only in Lima for a week but I would like to get some sense of being able
to communicate common courtesies and basic survival phrases. I am totally blind
so need it to be accessible with voice over, not reliant on any visual.

Also, what might you recommend for an English to Spanish translation web site
or app?

I have not yet sorted out if I will even be able to use my phone as Canada has
crazy cell charges and roaming charges that are even more crazy!

Thank-you for any recommendations.

Lastly, kind of unrelated, if anyone has travelled to Lima, I would love to
hear about experiences/advice which you could post me about privately.

sbal...@nexicom.net

With thanks and appreciation.

Request for printer information -- MAC computer, iPhone and iPad want a printer that will provide Braille and print and air print from devices??

2015-03-07 Thread Sharon Ballantyne

Hi All:

Can anyone provide any information for a Braille and regular ink print printer.
Someone is looking for a Braille print printer for use with a MAC computer and
has both iPhone and iPad so is hoping to have the air print option.

What kinds of dual Braille and print printer exists for MAC?

What software would be needed for the MAC and what apps might you recommend?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Choosing Provider

2013-12-26 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Dear Chris,

I am also in southern Ontario. I think all the three providers have good
coverage in southern Ontario. Look at the packages being offered and perhaps go
with the payment range and coverage depending on what data you are wanting and
phone options.

I am with Bell and have not had any problems but if you do need to call Bell
for something, my experiences is be prepared for a long time on hold.

Virgin is associated with Bell. My daughter just dropped her Bell service and
went with Virgin. She went from an iPhone 4 to the 5S and is really enjoying it.

You might also inquire about support as that may be a helpful factor as well.

Depending on the warranty plan you go with, costs can also bump up.

That sounds like an awesome price point.

can't text on iPhone 4 still running last update of IOS 6

2013-12-21 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi there,

I am not aware of changing any settings or anything but with voice over on I am
unable to text from my iPhone 4. If voice over is turned off, sighted people
can text just fine. With voice over on the area of the screen where the
keyboard should respond just makes that “thunk” sound.

Do you have any ideas?

Thank-you very much.

Help needed to make ibook read continuously with voice over in iOS 6 and in iOS 7

2013-09-26 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi all,

I have never used ibooks before. My phone is a 4 still on IOS 6. I ordered the
"IOS without the i" and it has opened up in the ibook app. I have seen a page
picker but sliding even in small in cements will skip several pages. How do I
make voice over read the book without having to find the picker each time and
try to change the page?

Will it be different in IOS 7 once I have that upgrade.

Thank-you for your help.

Is there an accessible app for the new DSM V

2013-08-29 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hello,

I am searching for a searchable DSM V app. They seem to start at around
twenty-five dollars and range to much higher.

The new DSM V was released in the spring.

I know the e-version is around one hundred fifty dollars but I am not sure how
accessible that would be and I'd love the portability of being able to have it
on my phone.

Applevis doesn't show any reviews.

This is a diagnostic manual that provides categories and criteria across the
mental health spectrum.

I am hoping there might be some on this list who may use this in their field of
work and might direct me to an app that is accessible.

Please e-mail me off list.

With much thanks

Re: iPhone 4 help for overriding spelling and app swotcher question, related to using seeing Eye app

2013-08-01 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi there,
Thank-you for your kindness in checking this spelling issue.

How do I disable the auto spelling correction feature?

Also do you know if I can check somewhere if I have somehow regarding the
reality that my app switcher is no longer speaking that I have no items left in
the app switcher? I must have done something but I have no idea what.

I really appreciate the clarification about the Seeing Eye app.

iPhone 4 help for overriding spelling and app swotcher question, related to using seeing Eye app

2013-08-01 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi All,

These questions likely apply to general phone use but I am asking in context of
the new Seeing Eye app use.

I am trying to enter an address in the text field and it will not accept what I
type and keeps changing my word to Breaker when the street name is Brealey. How
do I make the auto correct not take over?

Also as Seeing Eye uses data, I am concerned about it running and using data
when I may think it is off but may still be on. I have gone into app switcher
doing double tap of the home button, doing the tap and hold until I hear
editing apps when I can then do the split tap but voice over is not saying
anything to tell me there is nothing left in the app switcher. I am sure it
used to confirm the app switcher was empty.

Advice greatly appreciated.

Re: emoticons?

2013-03-02 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Yes they are under keyboards. It has been awhile but I think under
international keyboards.

On my iPhone, it becomes a second keyboard option on the keyboard. I think
someone told me the visual is a "world" keyboard. To select it go to the left
of space button.

It is a tap and hold to switch keyboards. Similar to switching between the
letter qwerty keyboard and numbers keyboard which si the next button over to
the left (lower left corner of keyboard).

Note that the emotions will all speak when you are selecting them and there are
tons of fun things that can be selected but if you are selecting images to be
sent to an android, they appear as a tray rectangle i the midst of the text,
but as the emoticons when communicating on an apple device. I do not know if
this has been corrected recently.

Help please, canI control contacts going from mountain lion to iPad and iPhone

2012-09-03 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi all,

I recently upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion IOS 10 and voila all my contacts
all were magically placed on my iPad and iPhone. If I delete from onee, I am
assuming that will delete from every device.

Can I set my iPhone and iPad so some of these contacts do not show up but stay
in my Mac, as several are e-mail contacts only that I don't need on other
devices.

Also can I do something to check for duplicates and merge information because
now some of my contacts are duplicated.

Thank-you so much for suggestions.

I still have not found a suitable recorder that would allow me to preserve
audio recordings (from audio tapes)tone indexing.

I am wondering if I could use the book mark app. I know I would need to still
individually put in the book marks where the tone indexes were but that is okay.

I have hundreds of children's books and I need advice on how you recommend I
create such a library. I would want to be able to replay them on iPhone 4 or
iPad 2. I need to be able to hold the book to read to children and listen with
headphones or earbud. I have done this with an audio tape recorder for many
years. I just don't want to accidentally tilt my i device mid reading or
something and lose my place so I am nervous about what might be the best way.I
am totally blind so use voice over for all of my screen navigation information.

I don't have any music on my i devices so I wondered about just making each
book title its own file.
I have both MAC and PC computer.
Any recommendations about backing up would also be appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Peace, Justice, Grace and Blessings,

Sharon

Re: iPad clock question

2012-07-02 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
The link for apple vis page for the iPad clock said page could not be found.
Can you please provide the name of the app as it is likely to be found in the
app store?

Thank-you so much.

Re: As promised!!!

2012-04-26 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi,

I have been trying to purchase Anna's book tonight. Even with sighted help the
shopping cart keeps saying it is empty after clicking on the book. I have
selected the word download file format so that can't be the issue.

Quantity shows one.

When hitting purchase now the book disappears and the cart is empty.

We are missing something.

Thank-you for any help you can offer.

Re: Displays with the iPad

2012-04-26 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi there,

I am a totally blind teacher who uses an iPad in my elementary school classroom.
I switch between having the projection system connected to my laptop and the
iPad all the time.

You need an adapter to connect the iPad tot he projection. I am sorry i bought
the adapter six months or so ago and do not remember what it is called. It is
super easy to use though. I also plug the iPad into a set of small computer
speakers so I ahve full sound.
We use small group and large group activities. My students use lots of apps
that are not even fully accessible to me but their eyes work, it is mine that
do not, so it is all fine.

My students ahve also been doing searches for youtube videos for short
presentations, for example, we are currently studying the environment and care
of the earth. We project these videos from either the iPad or computer
depending on which device we used to search.

All the best with your presentations.
