It's been a while since I did this, but I believe there is an 'Install
package...' icon under the device menu. You might try that.

Re: Siri

2014-07-12 Thread Tristan
Hi Hope,
If you're running iOS 7, go to Siri settings, General Siri. Plug in
your device, either to the wall or your computer. Then, go down to the
voice selection field -- I forget the exact name. change the gender
from male to female, or veisa versa if you have the female voice
selected.
Once this is done, the setting change will trigger your device to
download the necessary files for the high quality voice.

On 7/12/14, BBS bbssh...@icloud.com wrote:
Hi Sieghard. Actually the Siri voice doesn't have anything to do with
Voiceover so your below steps won't work. Hope, have you tried plugging in
your device? I found that after plugging it in and waiting a while, the
 more
expressive voices downloaded. Give it a shot. I hope that helped.

 Hi Hope,

Go to Voiceover settings and Language and download the high quality voice.
If you can't find it write to me either on or off list and I provide
detailed instructions as to how to do this, but right now I have to get to
work and don't have time to do this. It is fairly straight forward so
 you'll

Hello all. Ever since I got my new phone and updated to the latest version

 but
the older one. Is this true for everyone else? If not, what is the best way

 Thanks!

otterbox Case

2014-06-23 Thread Tristan
I've been extremely hesitant to purchase a new Otterbox case, simply
do to the bulk factor. I used one pretty regularly with my iPhone 5,
but ever since I got my iPhone 5s I've been using a tempered glass
screen protector. Couple with the illuminum/stainless steel shell of
the iPhone itself, it's offered enough protection for my day to day
activities without risk of extreme damage.
The new Otterbox case that's being advertised has caught my attention,
though. If anyone hasn't seen it it's called the Otterbox Resurgence,
and it has a 2,000 MA battery in the back. I've always been inclined
toward using external battery packs or the Mophie Juice Pack cases,
since I tried them earlier this year.
However, the protection and power that the Otterbox Resurgence
provides seems like it would be a smart upgrade as I go out and travel
more without outlets. Does anyone have experience with using a glass
screen protector beneath the clear plastic built-in one that Otterbox
cases have? Is it a requirement to 'cut' the plastic screen protector
out of the case to use it, or will it still fit (the glass layer is
extremely thin).

Keep in mind that the current Beta release of iOS 8 is Beta 2 and if you
really have to rely on your device and want to be sure all apps work then
running such an early Beta might not be ideal. You are likely to
 experience
apps which won't work, situations where normal behavior is not working

a few crashes here and there. Early Betas often also don't have the full

Is there a special technique for installing an iOS beta onto a device on

Pandora Acknowledged Problems; looking for assistance

2014-06-13 Thread Tristan
I e-mailed Pandora today. I got a very nice response back, stating that they
are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. In the meantime, the
representative that contacted me would like more information. I'm attempting
to compile an e-mail to thank them and to include more accessibility issues.
I personally don't use the app as much as I did in the past, so please
notify me of any other issues that I have not noticed.

The e-mail is below.

Hi Tristan,

Thanks for writing in about this. We are aware that our recent release has
caused issues for our blind and print disabled listeners, and we do
apologize for the surprise and inconvenience that undoubtedly caused to your
listening experience. While we don't have an immediate solution to offer,
I'll be happy to share your experience with our Engineers.

. Are there any features were you able to access in the past that are no
longer working?

. Do you encounter any other hurdles while listening, and what features
could help with this?

We really appreciate your help with this.

Pandora Accessibility

JUN 13, 2014 | 01:51PM PDT
Original message

Hi,

I updated Pandora to version 5.4 today on my iPhone, and now most of the
station names are inaccessible. I am a Voice Over user.
I can figure out what station I am on in the main screen of the app by
turning on Voice Over hints, but at the very most this is extremely
unworkable as hints have a tendency to be slow and clunky. Station names for
'recommended stations' do read correctly.
Besides the station name icons not showing up correctly, I would like to
commend Pandora on the recent changes in the application that made it much
more usable for blind and visually impaired users.
I truly love music and the way your application delivers it to my phone; I
would strongly appreciate it if this report was forwarded to the correct
people to ensure this oversight can be fixed.

RE: the best way for A blind person to take A picture with the iPhone five

2014-06-11 Thread Tristan
Hi,

If you hold the phone with the back-facing camera pointed at what you wish
to take a picture of, while voice over focus is in the view finder, VO will
say when it's focused. If you're taking a picture of a person, it will also
say one face or two faces and so on depending on how many are captured
in the viewfinder.
This is not completely and entirely reliable, however. I recommend getting
used to it by taking a few test pictures and asking a sighted person to help
you line up better and give you commentary on what could have been done
better.
Another useful tip is that you can use the volume up/down buttons to take
pictures, so you don't have to navigate out of the viewfinder to click the
take picture button. Holding down the volume up button, as of iOS 7, will
take a burst photo and pick the best one out of however many you give the
phone time to take (it's about 20 photos per second, if I recall correctly).

Hi I have the iPhone 5.
And how do you get it to tell you when taking A picture that you are in
focus or not for A good picture?
If you are totally blind.
Also if you would like to take A picture of someone how can you make sure
you get A good shot of there face like A sighted person would?

RE: Accessibility Features in iOS8

2014-06-03 Thread Tristan
Just as a side note, Apple's iOS devices uses a linux-based file structure.
If any of you have ever used a Linux computer, or taken a close look at the
structure of files on OS X, that's exactly how it works. It has a /etc,
/sys, and /home directory, just like Linux, and has an additional
/applications/ directory where applications are curated into their own
folders.

The sandboxing aspect is completely OS software-based.

Neal, you might be right, but also, the structure of file access has to do
with the apps on an iPhone having limited interaction with other apps. I'm
not a developer or engineer, but basically, this makes for a lot of
security, so there are few holes that can be hacked into. This makes
browsing a transparent file structure difficult. Whatever the under-the-hood
capabilities that have been implemented, it will be more feasible in iOs8
for apps to share information with each other while hopefully maintaining a
high security level.

I'm not sure iCloud Drive would satisfy those people who want to be able to
access their iPhone like a thumb drive. iCloud Drive would still only work
on an app by app basis. You couldn't copy your music over in the folder
structure you want, unless the Music app supported iCloud Drive and then 5G
won't go very far.

I too would like this feature myself, i.e. accessing the underlying folder
and file structure of the iPhone, but this isn't an oversight on Apple's
part. It's part of the design of the iPhone. I'd be surprised if Apple were
to change this any time soon, and for me at least, it just became part of
the decision making process. I'm getting an easier to use, more accessible
and more secure device at the cost of being able to access the underlying
file structure of the iPhone.

On 6/3/2014 7:16 PM, Alex Hall wrote:

Well, iOS devices are not thumb drives, and I doubt you will ever be able to
use one as such without a third-party app of some kind. That said, if an app
integrates the upcoming iCloud Drive option, you will have basically what
you are seeking, on an app-by-app basis. For example, say you edit a PDF in
a Mac app. you can drop it anywhere in your iCloud Drive, then use some app
on iOS to browse to and open that file. If Voice Dream were to support
iCloud Drive, imagine dumping zipped Daisy books into the drive, then
opening them in VDR. I hope I'm making sense.

RE: An issue with my new PC and my IPhone.

2014-06-01 Thread Tristan
Hi,

Reset the phone by holding down the power button for ten seconds.

Since this is a fresh install of Windows, you should probably receive a promp
on your phone to allow use of that computer. Make sure your saying yes to this
prompt (I forget the exact wording).

Also read this:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4344330?tstart=0

Here are some other steps you can take:

1. Open up device manager (just type device into the start menu and it
should appear)

2. Find the iPhone listing.

3. Press delete on iPhone, or right click it and go to delete. Confirm that you
wish to delete the iPhone driver.

4. Make sure iTunes is closed, then run the iTunes installer downloaded from
Apple.Com. Click repair, and let it do it’s thing.

5. Restart the computer and then attach the iPhone. iTunes should recognize
your phone.

If the above steps don’t work, try going into your task manager, navigating to
the processes tab. Try to find a process named ‘ath.exe’. Kill that by hitting
alt+e or hitting the applications key and going to end process.

If you’re still having trouble, check out this other link

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567

Hope this helps.

Case Opinions

2014-05-28 Thread Tristan
Hello,

A few days ago, my iPhone fell out of my pocket while traveling and the case
cracked. I am looking to get a new case. I've used both the Otterbox
Defender and the Speck cases in the past, but I'm looking for something
sturdy yet slim that will protect my iPhone 5S. I even pondered getting just
a screen protector ( the Bodyguardz Tempered Glass one looked pretty
appealing). Here are some questions I have:

1. What is a slim et sturdy case that will offer optimum protection
for my iPhone during daily use (commuting, traveling, etc).

2. Does anyone have any experience with glass screen protectors?

3. Do battery cases offer any (if at all) protection for the phone?
I'm mainly thinking about the Mophie Juice Pack cases.

Please provide any input you have on this topic.

Regards,

Tristan

RE: Odd voice over and speaker issue

2014-05-28 Thread Tristan
Hi Hope,

What kind of device are you on? I’m going to assume iPhone, but some listers do
ask about other iOS devices here. If it’s an iPhone, which model (4S, 5, 5S,
etc)?

I found an AppleVis article regarding an iPhone 4S that might help you. I’ve
never had this problem with any of my iPhones, but hopefully this can assist
you.

S. I've done that. It seems to have something to do with Siri. After I use
Siri, voiceover goes silent if the headset is not plugged in.

work fine while VoiceOver's internal speaker volume is low. Siri would also

2014-05-20 Thread Tristan
I’ve seen them range from 75 and onwards, $75 USD being the very cheapest for a
battery case. Prices can vary widely, because different cases have different
battery lives.

Newegg has them for $99.95:

Re: slightly OT : iOS simple filesystem management

2014-05-03 Thread Tristan
Hi Bill,
For all of this you'll most likely need to be jailbroken. There are
apps that can turn your iOS device into an FTP server, mainly Ubi-Disk
if I recall. It doesn't provide direct root access to your iOS device
though, or even let you see beyond the apps folder whilst connected to
the FTP server. Any other solutions would have to be obtained via
Jailbreaking, which if I had to presume is beyond the scope of this
list.

There's probably no way to configure VO to work better with an app.
I found that most of the Google services on iOS are all inaccessible

Google accessibility and seeing if they'll do something about it.

Re: configuring VO to work with Google services?

2014-05-03 Thread Tristan
Voiceover and Talkback/Chrome are very two different screen readers.
Xcode is not the same as the programming languages that are used in
Android production; expecting accessibility from an app on another
operating system because it's usable on one platform is impractical.

There is nothing you can do, aside from labeling buttons, to help the app

Re: tap tap see

2013-11-07 Thread Tristan
Something I'd really like to see is more individualized payment plans
for TapTapSee. I agree with Sieghard in the other thread, however I
believe the options should be more varied. For example, $1.99 for 25
pictures, $3.99 for 50, $5.99 for 75, $7.99 for 100. Not just 100
pictures or an unlimited 30 days -- offering a versatility in regarsd
to exactly how many pictures I want would be appealing.

On 11/7/13, Alex Hall mehg...@gmail.com wrote:
I completely understand your logic and doing this. My only question is this:

I'd like to address the change in TapTapSee moving from a free app to a
subscription service. Due to the high costs of image recognition, we were

subscriptions are being introduced over the next few days. We offer two
options. Option 1) 100 Picture Pack for $7.99. Option 2) 1 Month of
Unlimited Pictures for $9.99. The purchase is done through your Apple
iTunes account. If you choose, for example, the 1 month unlimited pack,
then you will be prompted with a message to renew after that time period
runs out. The costs of maintaining the app left us with two options,
either shutting the app down completely or introducing it as subscription
 service.

 Hello Alan,

As always, it's good to hear from you.

 No apologies necessaries.

 Allow me to explain.

When you open the native iOS Messaging app, you are placed in the Inbox
which consist of Contact-Recipient based SMS conversation threads,
 similar
to the conversation view in many popular email clients.

While you can delete, forward, and reply to various portions of the SMS
thread, unlike in an email client or the Android OS, you cannot create
custom-named folders, such as Important, Music, Pets, Proof of Payment,
 etc,
in which to store various conversations. Further, there is no way, at
 least
not one of which I am aware, to lock a thread or in some way prevent it
 from
 being accidentally deleted.

These days, more and more people are using SMS to both verify payments,
confirm contracts, and prove intent in a court of law.

In my opinion, this is yet another area where Apple needs to play
 catch-up
 with Android.

Re: Confirming that an iPhone is unlocked

2013-10-28 Thread Tristan
Hi Donald,

CHeck out
http://iphoneimei.info/

You can find your imei number under the General / About screen.

On 10/28/13, Vicky Collins v-coll...@sbcglobal.net wrote:
As I had mentioned going to try and do so a while back, I finally
got around to getting my ATT 4S unlocked today. And, once I did
the restore back to factory defaults, I did indeed get a message
on my PC telling me that the iPhone was unlocked. I first got a
message on the PC telling me that the restore had completed and
to leave my iPhone connected and it would show up in iTunes once
the phone had rebooted. And, sure enough, a few seconds after
the phone had vibrated from the reboot, a message came up in
iTunes telling me congratulations that my phone was unlocked, and
I could then press continue to either restore the unit from a
backup or setup as a new device.

I was quite sure I would have to figure out a way to fax
information to ATT regarding the purchase of my phone. But,
surprisingly, after going online to their form to request the
unlock and entering my phone number and IMEI and first and last
name and last four digits of my SSN and pressing the submit
button, I right away got two emails, one telling me they had
received my request to unlock the phone, and the next one telling
me my phone could be unlocked and giving me the necessary
instructions. True, grin, that message with the instructions
also said to allow 24 hours for the unlock to take place, but I
of course didn't wait that long, which is likely why I had to do
 the restore a second time.

As a side note, iTunes had me go to my iPhone and turn off the
find my iPhone feature before I could do the factory restore.
And, in fact, Apple even sent me an email informing me that find
my iPhone had been turned off, and thus couldn't be tracked or
wiped. Of course, I turned that feature back on right away after
I had restored from my saved backup.

To refresh from my prior message of sometime back, I purchased my
4S over two years ago now, paying full price on the first day one
could order the phone, as I wanted it but wasn't eligible for an
upgrade at the time. I'm now out of contract and just paying my
same rates on a month to month basis.

Oh, finally, not noticing the congratulations message the first
time I did the restore, I did look around a bit online to see if
there was a way to tell if a phone was unlocked, and I found the
below article, among others. And, for better or worse, I did go
to the site mentioned in the article and enter my IMEI and I was
then able to sign in with my google account, and thus didn't have
to create a facebook account as mentioned in the article. I was
then told my phone was unlocked. So, for those who are still
reading and care, here is the link to the article in question,
which one may read or follow its instructions at their own risk:

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe
 your unlock
status is posted anywhere officially. The best thing to do would
 be to
simply try a SIM card from a different carrier and see if it
 activates.
Alternatively you could try to contact Apple, but given the age
 of the phone
they might charge for a support incident.

Subject: Confirming that an iPhone is unlocked

This is an embarrassingly stupid question to which I really need
 an answer.

A couple of years ago, I bought a 3-GS from a fellow who had
 upgraded. I
used the 3-GS exclusively on WIFI, no phone service. Now that I
 have a 4-S,
I decided to attempt to get the 3-GS unlocked as it would
 increase its
already minimal resale value. This was an extremely frustrating
 process
because I am no longer an A T and T customer, nor is the phone's
 original
 owner.

I ultimately got an A T and T service rep who listened, and
 understood and
completed the request and stated that because it is an iPhone,
 all I had to
do was to back up the 3-GS, wipe it, and then restore from the
 back up. I
have backed it up but have not yet wiped and restored. So the
 question is
simply this. After completing the restoration, what is the best
 way to
confirm that the 3-GS is no longer locked to A T and T?

 Thanks for any help.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to clear the internet history or cookies

 Ideas?

Our input is heard loud and clear and we are not being put on the back burner
you have blind people specifically working on the mac and iOS to make it a
awesome experience for us. We take things in stride and we implement when
possible. Blind people have worked extremely hard to make this device 100%
accessible to the best of our ability and we hate to hear that back burner
talk that comes from the Windows world. Trust me I can vouch that
accessibility is in the front of all of Apples product from the Apple TV to
the actual walk in store and we will work hard to continue making amazing
devices but stating that we were put on the back burner sheds a negative
connotation on what progress we have made for all of us. I will say for a
free screen reader we have done a hell of allot more than those other guys
 and it cost you nothing.

Yes, having gone off on my frustrations with the trends I have
observed, I should say that I have not had issues with 5.1 or over one
day now 5.1.1 that really cause me any big problems. Fortunately I do
not really use the calendar for all day appointments, if I did that
would be frustrating, the unlock bug is very minor in all that it
really causes, and loosing speech is the biggest issue although I have
mostly avoided that one so far. It is frustrating knowing I have just
been lucky though and it really exists as an issue. That one has been
around for a good while and they have not addressed it though and I
believe that to be a big problem. Fortunately most bugs are not really
voiceover specific in what I have known of so the population at large
 can weigh in on them.

I agree with your post except for the gratuitous Windows bashing. The
sentiment from customers that their pet bugs aren't being addressed is
human nature and has nothing to do with Windows. I hear the same thing
from AIX, Ubuntu, Symbian, ..., users, as well as from users of almost
all significantly complex user applications. It's also not restricted to
the blind or accessibility short comings.

Ditto for accessibility concerns. Again this is human nature, and
probably has more to do with the general discrimination faced by the
blind than it does with Windows.

Again, I agree with the sentiment of your post, but I just think that
the gratuitous Windows bashing doesn't add anything to your argument and
just takes away from an otherwise good point.

the risk we take in buying off-the-shelf software that is accessible is that
there will be some glitches in its operation. I should say, there might be
more glitches in its operation than for a blindness-specific product. I think
