RE: Alexa on wifi at different location

2023-05-04 Thread deidreandlouise
Thanks. I saw all that last night. Odd thing is that voice over never tells me
the same thing, either that or I hit on something different. Neither does my
old 6 say the same thing that my SE second generation says, both in the Alexa
App.

This morning, I coached someone sighted to simply get to the
place to plug in the new password since the network had already been selected.
Voila, and the second old phone also connected without me having to fuss around
in the Alexa App. I was on the right track.

I’m finding Siri somewhat unreliable, unless I want to blame it all on my human
error. I do not thinkit is all me!

You have to go into the Alexa app on your phone and hook the Alexa device up to
the Wi-Fi of your current/new location. The Alexa speaker connects to Wi-Fi
just like your iPhone or any other device by recognizing the Wi-Fi name and
then of course you have to provide the credentials, e.g. the password of the
Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.

To do this do the following:

1. Open the Amazon Alexa app on your iPhone

2. tap on the "Devices" tab at the bottom (it is 4 of 5, so second from the
right)

3. Tab on "Echo and Alexa", this is the first item in the list of available
device groups

4. Find the Echo device you want to change and double tap on it

5. Find Wi-Fi and tap on it

6. It will display the Wi-Fi name that was last used and it should say
"Change", this is a link, tap on it and follow the instructions to select a new
Wi-Fi and enter the password when prompted.

This may not be an appropriate question for this group. Just let me know if it
isn’t.

I brought an old screenless Echo Device to a place where I am
staying. I saw nowhere in the Alexa App to take it off-line in one place and
put it on another.

The only way it will talk to me is if I turn on Bluetooth. I’d rather hook it
up to the wifi where I am staying.

Amazon for customers with disabilities says my inquiry is not suitable for a
phone call but I am too tired now to struggle with this more now.

ultiple message notifications

2023-03-01 Thread deidreandlouise
Hello all

I never solved the problem of having messages only announced
in the message App which sits at the bottom of my home screen in the Doc.

After an update to 16, suddenly, I get the same notifications
in something on the home paged called "the notification center." I do not
want to see the same things twice and have to clear them from the
"notification center, which never clears them all out even if I hit clear,
or clear all. There are too many options that sometimes that show that I have
no need for .

Now I have the same messages I have deleted from inside the message app
coming back over and over again over 3 or ore days. This also never used to
happen. Look, if I deleted a series of messages or just one, I do not want
to see them over and over again.

I really hate redundancy.

I think it's time to call Apple Accessibility. There appear to be two
parallel universes when it comes to where messages are being presented.
Please just leave them in the Message App and I will see them on the in the
doc which will say something like 4 new messages, and I can hit on that and
respond to them once Mess App is open. Get rid of that unnecessary other
place where reminders and other announcements show. One reminder is enough,
I don't need a list of all things for the day to show up in the
notification center.

I quit!

These posts are great. You all are up on all that is out there. As for me, I
can't wear any kind of ear pieces because they cause me sharp pain in my inner
ear. I am glued to my phone day and night mostly because I text and read a lot,
but I find if I do not turn my phone off at night, I sleep poorly because as
soon as I wake in the night, I once more reach for the phone. I fall asleep
again but if I leave the phone off I somehow sleep much better and wake less!
Round the clock entertainment these phone sure provide us. Does that

I'd take a set of Airpods maybe if somebody gave them to me along with $20.
I hate having anything stuck inside my ear further than the wired Earpods, they
happen to fit me great and I don't even have to push them in hard and they just
stay in place.
I also wouldn't be caught dead spending the kind of money on two little things
which only last 5 or 6 hours and which I am bound to loose sooner or later.
Now keep in mind that this is strictly my take, I know many of you love them
and that's fine, then of course if I did spend the money on them I'd also say I
love them.
As for wearing something in bed when you most likely will fall asleep there is
nothing better than those sleep headbands which have a set of very thin
speakers on each side over your ear and a little control pod on your forehead
with 3 buttons for volume up/down and play/pause in the middle. Of course if
you want to fall asleep to high fidelty music then these are not the right
thing, but they are fine for audio books or, if you are into those sleep
sounds, that would probably be just fine, but they are the most comfortable
thing and I usually sleep on my side so I definitely know and I often wake up
in the middle of the night with my Audible book happily playing and I then
usually stop it, pull them off my head and thrown them on the side table. You
can find them on Amazon, just make sure you do look for wireless ones because
the original ones do have a 3.5mm cable and that of course is sucks. I think I
paid around $30 Canadian for mine about 2 or 3 years ago and they still work
great.
I also have an Aftershokz Open Com which I use in certain situations and
another Bluetooth gadget I have is one of these around the neck speakers, they
consist of a thick and relatively soft rubbery cable about as thick as your
thumb and one each end is a speaker, one has the typical buttons to turn it
on/off and for play/pause and volume up/down. I quite like using them at home
when I am out in the summer in the garden or even while cooking, your audio is
right there more or less in front of your shoulders and you can easily reach up
and pause or change the volume.for cert But I just bought a new set of
Lightning Earpods because they are still my preferred headset, there is no lag
and for $24.99 Canadian I get surprisingly good sounding earbuds. I probably go
through a pair a year, sometimes a bit longer, but as I said, inexpensive, good
and when I don't need them I roll them up around my hand and stick them into my
pocket.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hello All,

I have long been a fan of Apple wired Ear Pods.

I had to have my original beloved 8 Plus replaced, about a month prior to its
warranty expiration because the audio function of the Lightening port went bad.

For the last 6-months or so, perhaps longer, while the Lightening port on my
replacement 8 Plus still functioned as expected, it lost the ability to retain
a cable, unassisted. This is to say, when I hold the phone in portrait mode,
perpendicular to the ground, any attached cable will fall out.

I am certain that I was the blame for this as I used to frequently roll onto
the phone, when sleeping; very often tangling the cable with tension for hours
at a time. (How's that for too much information? (smile)).

My point, I am determined not to ruin the Lightening port on my 14.

With that in mind, I am doing my best to wing myself from the wired Ear Pods in
favor of Apple Air Pods.

Even though I like Air Pods and they are definitely more convenient to use than
the wired alternative, I still find myself reaching for the wired pair, more
than anything else.

I was just wondering how many of you have gone completely wireless having all
but abandoned the wired Ear Pods?

It is interesting because when I go to Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc. I always
see wired Ear Pods, with either the Lightening or audio connector, readily

RE: Siri and dictation tones

2022-12-28 Thread deidreandlouise
Yes, and dictation using Siri from the home screen with 16 no longer works
with any consistency on my SE 2020. I like simple and don’t always feel like
being inside the Message App dictating in the edit field. That function works
well, but what is the point of using Siri if you can’t use it more on the fly?

All I get is the text and a listen button that does noting for my purposes. I
have not found any setting to remedy this though I may have gotten some
pointers here in thepast many weeks, all of which I tried. Usually Only
occasionally do I get a prompting to send., Voice over is quite fickle and I do
not use a Bluetooth keyboard, even though I have one. I much prefer using my
old out of service 6S that does not have 16 on it, for daily texting. It
still allows me to dictate and add text without losing it, and I mean from the
home screen, not from within the message app. I do an awful lot of texting each
day.

I still can’t figure out how to get rid of the double
notifications. I used to only get my remindersand notifications at the
appointed hour and those were settings done in notifications. With 16 I now
have those alerts as well as messages in the “notification center.” No matter
if it is on or off, it still gives me those alerts and hangs onto them until I
clear them. I never used to have to do that.

I do not know what phone I might even want once
the SE dies, and that is too bad because I am glued to my phone as is. It’s
fortunate that the apps I use work fine.

Both Apple and Windows seem to think everyone has super hearing the way their

Good morning.
For about the last day I have not had my Siri and dictation tones for some
reason. Dictation works but I cannot get acknowledgement Siri heard me say Hey
Siri.
That’s the only thing that seems amiss in a major way with my iPhone 8 Plus

 All other sounds are fine.

figured out how the battery caseworks

2022-12-20 Thread deidreandlouise
Hello again

I'm not sure why this did not occur sooner unless the battery case I just
bought was not charged at all or enough to charge my phone. This I don't
really understand because when I asked someone sighted they often told me
the back of the case was lit up and I kept it plugged in for up to 2 ours
which the literature said to do.

Suddenly yesterday I heard the sound of plugging in the
charger when I must have successfully turned my battery case on without any
sighted feedback. The phone was not plugged into an outlet, it simply sat
in the battery case. So the way it works, and maybe they all do, when the
battery case has charge it charges the phone when the case's power is turned
on.

I didn't know this is the way they worked. How I thought they worked was to
take the charge from the battery case first when both the case and phone
were charged. Or, maybe they draw off energy from the phone as usual without
a case, but if you turn the case on, it will charge the phone with whatever
juice the case has, and give the phone what it needs until you don't need it
to charge up anymore.

Now then, I guess if the battery case has nothing more to give, you would
know if your phone goes low and if the battery case is on, it won't say it's
charging up in the status bar anymore. All of this latter process would be
done without a charging cord plugged in.

Is this all obvious to the rest of you who use battery cases? Does this
sound right? I definitely do have a charging case or port of one sort or
another, so at least my $30 got me something.

I imagine as your phone battery gets low you press the button and it will start

My case works the opposite, it starts with the power of the case and when that
goes to zero percent it then goes to the phone battery.
As for checking status if i am on page one i flick down a page where i have

Maybe Siri notification reading is turned on, you can check under Settings >
Siri and Search > Announce Notifications

At the very top you can turn this on and off, if it is turned on you can then
select whether Siri should read notifications for your apps under the heading
"Announce notifications from".

Go down until you find messages and see if it is on.

If you completely turn off Voiceover with a triple press of the side button or
maybe it's the home button if you have an SE or if you ask Siri to turn off
Voiceover there is no way Voiceover is reading anything and it must be Siri.

RE: stopping dictation

2022-11-30 Thread deidreandlouise
Siri is not good at recognizing :natural" speech; it often has a particular
syntax it wants. I think Siri recognizes "dial" such and such a person. Even
so, I've had to change names in my contacts before because even if I only have
one Michael, Siri sometimes comes up with a short list of other names
completely unrelated. I find that most annoying too.

Yes. When I ask Siri to call someone she asks”What do you want to know about
’someone’?” I resist the urge to say, “I want to know why you don’t understand

Yeah Siri gets quite a blot of that stuff screwed up since 16. I haven't done
any updates since 16 because though there might have been some minor bug fixes
with voice over and dictation, I do not want to be further disappointed. I
often send messages on my back up old phone that has no phone service because I
can still add to Siri dictated messages outside the message app and it will add
to them without losing the first part of the already dictated message, which is
what Siri now does. Losing those functions kind of defeat using Siri in such a
context, that is, more spontaneously without having to go into the message app.
Maybe it has to do with the function capacity of the SE 2nd generation phone.

SE 2020

2022-10-04 Thread deidreandlouise
Hello all

There is another thing happening on my SE 2020 since the first 16 update. I
did write up a list and send it on to Apple Assessibility and just got
disconnected while waiting on hold to talk to them about what I will
describe below.

Siri is not responding to my normal tone of voice. I have to
literally yell at the phone (and my echo device) to get her to acknowledge I
have spoken. I know to wait to hear the bonk sound, for lack of a better
term, and either way I wind up having to repeat my request twice, and you
all know how much I like doing that!

Is there some setting to mark the sensitivity of the
recognition? I don't mean speech recognition, just regular dictated speech,
once again most of the problems are when I try to use Siri from the home
screen, and I am not within an app. I guess if this persists I will simply
get trained to always do dictation within an edit field in a specific App.

   Another broken thing:

If I say go to mail settings or settings for mail, I will
never be taken to those specific settings. This was not the case with
previous IOS versions.

And, why is "mentions" in my roter? I did not put it there
and see nothing about it in the roter settings.

btw, what bugs did 16.2 fix?

OK,

Under Settings, Notifications, mail, find the customize notifications button.
There will be separate settings for each account if you have more than one
account.

You can assign a different sound for each account if you want, but you will
want to be sure that Alert, Sounds, and Badges are on under this section.

Again, on the first level, leave notification center unselected.

For messages, I have allow notifications on at the very top.

Then, in the alerts heading, Allow on lock screen and allow as banner are
selected. Allow in notification center is not selected.

I also have announce notifications on.

I have show previews as never.

Notification grouping is automatic.

I don’t have to clear messages from the notification center.

I read them and they are gone…

Well Mike, if you don’t mind reading a little more crap, , I think I know how
you need your settings set.

Open settings, notifications.

Find the Mail app.

Flick to Allow in notification Center, if that says selected, double tap and it
should no longer say selected.

Back out of the settings, and that should fix it.

The same for messages.

Hi All,

Using an SE2020 iPhone running iOS15.7. It seems like I've tried every

would someone please tell me the following?

What I want is to get the alert sounds for text messages and emails but, I
don't want them showing in the Notification Center. To me it makes no sense
going to both the Message and Mail apps, then into the Notification Center to
delete the notifications. I only need to hear the alert sounds as the messages

Is what I'm asking doable? If so, how it would be done? All help is greatly
appreciated. Thanks mooy moocho.

Hello all

How can I set my mail and contacts to not constantly ask me which list or
contact list to use? On my 6S andbefore the update I only told the phone to
sort into known and unknown. Now I get othr headings I do not want to have
to reset continually.

I continue to scrutinize settings but still keep missing
things that are causing redundancy that is totally unwelcome.

I feellike just using my old phone with an older update on
it.

And, why do I now have to hear the name of the app I want to
close twice in the app switcher before having to swipe again to close or
activate the app? This too is new.

Thanks Donna.
I found a spcific setting in notifications to restrict alerts in the
notification center, not within the app. I had to turn off calender
notifications because they were coming in non-stop and they only used to be set
t alert me one day before at the time of the appointment. I'm not sure how to
get that corrected again.
I use a SE 2020, but maybe I'll go look at where screen recognition is.

Wow, precision alright, and power to the talking cooking scale
makers.

it was already obvious that you, Sieghart, were serious and now 100 times even
more so. I spent 6 months in Germany in 1977 when I was still a teenager and
loved it.

I loved the whole ritual of making Feuersangenbowler, but don't
scream if I badly badgered the spelling. It sure gave me a serious buzz and
warmed me up to the very core one night when I came in from the cold and
unsuspecting, was given a cup of it for the first time. We must have prepared
ourselves at another time because the sugar loaf, the pedestal it was placed
on, the saturating it with liquor then setting it on fire then watch while it
dissolved into the bowl was amazing.

Measuring whether using cups or a scale is no different exact using a cup is
not very accurate. If you want it to be as accurate as possible especially for
floour you have to spoon the flour into the cup because if you scoop it in then
it gets compressed and instead of the approx. 120 grams which a cup of all
purpose flour should weigh you may have 20% more which makes a huge difference.

If I need 4.5 cups of flour it's actually a lot faster to weigh it than to use
first a 1-cup measurement and then a half cup measurement.

I enjoy cooking but baking even more and I enjoy the precision and the process
(and of course the results).

I don't have that much time to do a lot which is probably good because while I
don't gain weight that easily, I will gain weight if I eat lots of sweets and
besides its not good for you despite how good it seems to be 

But for me Christmas without a German Stollen, certain types of cookies and
lots of Marzipan is just not right. Oh, and lets not forget hot mulled wine
with spices.

Hello Keith,

I personally find the talking scales from my Weigh to work best. I should
mention that I haven't tried a connected scale yet, but my problem with them is
that each time you want to weigh something you have to get out your iPhone, I
assume you would have to use some app to work with the scale and then hopefully
the scale once setup connects without fuss and can provide a continuous readout
as you add whatever ingredient you are weighing to the scale.

I enjoy cooking and baking and even if I say so myself I am quite good at it
having been taught by my Mom who has her Masters in home economics from Germany
back when she was young in the late 50's and early 60's. Back then they were
taught so many basics and of course while she is not a Chef, her education
included a lot of cooking and baking. Anyways, recipes from Germany always have
ingredients listed in grams which of course is much more precise than using
cups and spoons with the exception of some spices where it called for a
teaspoon of ground cumin or cloves or cinnamon in which case the teaspoon is
fine since that would only be 2 or 3 grams at best which is difficult to weigh.

If I bake and have to weigh flour, sugar, butter and whatever other ingredients
I may need I want to be able to do so quickly and accurately and the My Weigh
talking scale I have allows me to do this.

Just as one example, we have a traditional Christmas cake in Germany called
"Stollen" which is a yeast dough with a ton of stuff in it like ground almonds,
3 different types of raisins, fresh ginger, candied ginger, candied orange
peel, candied lemon peel, so I have to weigh all that in addition to flour,
butter, milk (I also weigh liquids), yeast and without a scale where you can do
this quickly and without fuss it would be a pain in the neck.

I know this topic has come up before and I think it was Krister who said his My
Weigh scales always break and never work more than a few months or maybe a
year, but that is not my experience. I had my first My Weigh scale for I think

I know this topic has come up before and I think it was Krister who said his My
Weigh scales always break and never work more than a few months or maybe a
year, but that is not my experience. I had my first My Weigh scale for I think
around 20 years when it did at some point not work any more. It was the
VOX-3000 and the surprising thing is that when I contacted My weigh they
offered to replace it with a new scale for only the shipping cost which I
thought was amazing. I now have had that replacement scale for probably the
last 4 or 5 years and it just works.

I just did a quick search and here are the links and brief descriptions:

VOX-3000: The world’s only precision talking kitchen scale.

It uses a 9 Volt battery and has a 1 gram accuracy just as the Vox-2 which I
think is a newer model although they must have updated the Vox-3000 since it
says now that it can talk in English, Spanish, fRench and German and my old one
could only speak English as far as I know. The Vox-3000 also has a round
platform and comes with a plastic bowl which has a rim around the bottom which
sits on the platform so it actually cannot just slide off if you accidently
push against it.

For some reason they don't list the capacity of the Vox-3000, but if I remember
correctly it weighs up to 3000 grams as is implied in the model name, so 3 Kg
or 6.6 pounds.

My Weigh Vox 3000 | My Weigh | The best digital scales on earth

VOX-2: Multi-purpose, high-capacity talking scale.

This one weighs up to 5 Kg and you can of course set it to grams/Kg and
ounces/pounds and it is accurate to 1 gram which is 0.0353 ounces.

Both of the My Weigh scales I have had also work really well in that you can
put on any plate or bowl or container before you turn the scale on and it will
start at 0 no matter whether you have a little plastic bowl on it which weighs
an ounce or a big glass bowl which weighs 2 pounds.

There is also a button for a tare feature which allows you for example to weigh
your butter, assume you want 200 grams, then you want to add sugar directly
into the butter because normally that is what you do when you bake. You press
the tare button after you have your butter in the bowl and the scale then
resets to 0 and you can add say 100 grams of sugar which just makes it a bit
easier and saves you from using another bowl to weigh it before pouring it into
the bow with the butter.

Interestingly enough my wife says our scale is also a Vox-2, but it still uses
a 9 Volt battery and as far as I know it only speaks English whereas the one
they show on their website now can speak English, Spanish, French and German

Apps only under Notifications in Settings and where to go to not get
notifications from what I believe is the Notification Center. I do not need
duplicate notifications and don't need to have to clear messages that are
coming from the Notification Center. I simply hear messages make a tone and
announce who it's from then after I look at it keep it or delete it. Am I
confusing something here? the h.
Similarly how can I stay in the area after I've chosen to see all mail or
unread mail and not have to choose that over and over again. I simply want to
stay in my conversation list and would rather go looking to change it when I
wanted, not have to choose over and over again.
This may be ignorance on my part, or it may be that the headings that

And one m ore suggestion since you seem to have a second phone available, why
not call Aira or Be My Eyes, using OCR on the screen is good and it may tell
you what is there, but another person could have probably helped you tap the

Subject: RE: Another Phone That Won't Talk After Reboot

I had this same thing happen with both my 12 Mini and 13 Mini Friday night, but
I haven’t had the problem with either phone since. I’m using the default
Samantha voice, and I had no problems when upgrading to iOS 16.

With the 13 Mini, I had turned the phone off to get rid of that one unread
message badge I often get now when I receive a text message on one of my phones
and delete it right after reading. Since I have text message forwarding set up
on both of my phones, the phone on which I don’t read the text shows that badge
until I either recover the message I have deleted on the other phone or until I
reboot that phone on which I haven’t read the message.

Anyway, after turning that iPhone 13 Mini back on, VoiceOver did not speak or
make any sounds, and nothing I did from trying to talk to Siri, using
headphones, turning up the volume button, doing the triple click of the side
button or force restarting the phone would bring back the speech. I finally got
my 12 Mini to read the screen with Seeing AI, and after pressing the side
button to get it where it needed to be, it finally read the slide to unlock or
whatever it says, and I lucked into getting the phone into the correct position
with the slide I did, and then I miraculously entered the passcode correctly
and VoiceOver started talking once again. Before getting to this point, though,
I had had enough unsuccessful attempts at entering that passcode to where I had
to wait the fifteen minutes before I got the opportunity that actually let me
unlock the phone and restore VoiceOver.

As for my 12 Mini, while I had turned it off for the same reason as the 13
Mini, meaning another text message badge I wanted to get rid of as I had
permanently deleted a message on the 13 Mini and thus couldn’t recover it on
the 12 Mini to get rid of that badge, I wasn’t nearly as fortunate with
recovering VoiceOver. For, even though I practiced positioning my fingers on
the 13 Mini so I would be ready when I could get the 12 Mini to that unlock
position, I somehow managed to enter the incorrect passcode every time,
figuring this since VoiceOver never did start talking.

I let this go on for my opportunity to enter the passcode after an hour, but
when that attempt failed and the screen read that my 12 Mini would now be
disabled for three hours, I decided to try other things. I couldn’t connect the
phone to the computer and try to see if I could bring up the accessibility
settings in iTunes because I had turned off the USB accessories setting that
would’ve let USB accessories connect after the phone had been locked for an
hour. I couldn’t turn the phone off as I normally do by pressing the volume up,
then the volume down, and then pressing the side button for a second or two,
and I was afraid to try to turn the phone off with holding the side button and
one of the volume buttons as I didn’t want to risk calling 911 by mistake, so I
wasn’t able to put the 12 Mini in recovery mode either. Oh, although VoiceOver
didn’t work, I was able to call either phone when VoiceOver wasn’t working and
each would ring even though there was no speech except me hearing myself when I
would occasionally get that swipe just right and I managed to get a call
connected.

Thus, what I wound up doing in the end, as I certainly wasn’t going to knock on
a neighbor’s door late at night, was that I went into the Find My app on my 13
Mini, erased the iPhone 12 Mini, and then set up the 12 Mini again restoring it
from the iCloud backup I had thankfully done the day before.

Does it have to do with their formatting? It would take a very long time to

I particularly like the idea of being able to download directly from the search

The improved search results will also be welcome.

Announcing BARD Mobile for iOS 2.0

We're excited to tell you that NLS has released version 2.0 of BARD Mobile for
iOS. In this version, the BARD Website option is replaced by a new and powerful
search engine that has the following abilities:

" Search by keyword, title, author, or annotation.

" Search for either braille or audio content.

" Use the Keyword search to search for narrators.

" Search for items in the Music collection, including music
appreciation and instructional materials as well as music scores.

" Access all the options available from books in your wish list,
Recently Added Books, etc., such as downloading directly from the search
results page and viewing all the books by the same author or in the same series.

" Enter an author's or narrator's name in any format and without
quotation marks and get reliable results.

" Enter words from a title without quotation marks and get reliable
results.

" Enter multiple types of information in a Keyword search, such as
part of a title and an author's last name or a title and narrator's name, and
get reliable results.

" Change the type of search after you conduct the original search.

" Sort search results by title, author, or latest (the publication
date).

To conduct a search, choose the Search option at the top of the Get Books
screen, just above Wish List. Keyword is the default search type, and Audio is
the default format. Change these settings if you like, type or dictate search
terms in the search field, and choose Go or Search. To change the format or
type of search from the Search Results page, select the search field at the
top; all the options on the original search page are now available. To sort the
search results, choose Title, Author, or Latest. To access options such as
Download and viewing other books by the same author with VoiceOver, touch the
title of interest, flick up or down to the desired choice, and double-tap. If
you don't use VoiceOver, select the More info button to the right of the title,
and then choose either Download, Add to Wish List, or More Actions.

Additionally, Version 2.0 fixes problems with:

The email below is from BARD Support.

" Rewind controls skipping further than intended.

" Side loading books.

" Downloading and reading non-ASCII foreign language book titles.

The update should be available by Friday, September 23rd. We hope you enjoy it.

one more phone that won't talk

2022-09-15 Thread deidreandlouise
Why would voice over not come up just because a phone was
locked, especially when it is set to activate Siri even if the phone is
locked? Why would the clicks be louder thatn the tone? I guess that was
deliberate on the part of apple, but then when I first rebooted my phone after
updating, or it rebooted itself, the Siri sound was very loud and then the
clicks were not. Why did voice over not accompany those other sounds at a
similar volume, even if the volume had been accidentally lowered or
muted?updathe v

The only solution to these hick ups with entering passcodes when the phone
stops talking, were this to be a regular happening, would be to open the phone
with a fingerprint or facial recognition. As for me, I do no banking or
purchasing through my phone, and though I have saved some passwords that would
be visible to a nosey intruder, I don't even want to lock my phone. My phone is
never outside my apartment unless I am wearing it on my body. I have never left
a phone behind me anywhere where a stranger had had to kindly reunite it with
me, or a less virtuous character steal off with it.

The fewer strokes or gestures or touch of the phone, the better.
I don't use Hey Siri either though that would be most convenient. I don't want
the added battery drain. I need to get a batter pack to extend the life of my
phone, but haven't made that call yet, and it took awhile before I found out to
look under Accessories on the Apple page to be in the right area to find them.

What I am happy about with this update is that the apps I use
daily have not changed in structure so I don't have to take great note of new
names for things. All the renaming of simple Tabs used to drive me crazy. I
jumped from 14 something to 16 and other than the initial gliches, it's ok,
except that the tone for when Siri is listening is impossible to hear nless I
turn the volume of Siri up a tad beyond what I find desirable.

I tried and tried and tried that. It appears as though voice over was indeed on
though so I'm not sure why the side volume buttons weren't working, until today
when someone started hitting numbers on the screen which did become visible
after the screen curtain off gesture worked. You are right too that I have
turned the volume way off a few times in my I Phone user life, and it
frustrated me to no end until using the side buttons to push it back up.

Specifically for Dedra, but quite possibly others may benefit.

I want to suggest that perhaps - if you are holding the iPhone on the sides as
I’ve been known to do - that perhaps you have turned the volume down to 0.
I’ve done this several times and I find that when I execute the 3-tap on the
home button and there is no verbal notice of VoiceOver being turned off or on,
that it’s possible that the volume has been completely muted. It doesn’t seem
to take much to accidentally mute the volume at all, give it a try and
hopefully it will help you out.

RE: BARD on the Echo 10- my mistake

2022-08-01 Thread deidreandlouise
Hello all

I’m sorry I got you all excited about accessing BARD on an Echo device. I just
realized it was NFB Newsline I never got working on the Echo. I just opened it
and told it I wanted to read the New Yorker which is in my favorites. It
started reading something at such a rapid rate, it was total gibberish. Alexa
would not allow me to change the rate of speech by simply talking to the
device. I might have to do that from the screen or the Alexa App.

I wonder if someone confused Bookshare with BARD?

Bookshare has a skill for Echo devices that I believe is still in beta, and
when I tried it a few months ago, was not worth the trouble.

BARD certainly is not on Echo yet.

If I'm wrong, someone please cite the source for their information.

I find Netflix to have a very easy app to navigate. Often such apps work better
on the web than they do on the app, which for those that do work well, they
make it so much easier to use the particular vendor.

Navigate by heading and you will find everything you need.

RE: echo and echo dot

2022-05-21 Thread deidreandlouise
The object identification for the Echo Show is very slow and that's probably
because you need to know where you are standing for the camera to get the best
view. I didn't find it useful. My original Echo which is round with no screen
works great. The ones with screens miss a lot but I can't say if that is more
due to my internet or that they are far from fool proof. For the most part, I
love having them and use mine each day. If you don't need a screen for any
reason, don't bother buying the more expensive ones. Read the specs for each
device so you know what you are paying for. I bought an Echo 5 inch screenn one
for something like $33 a year or so ago for a friend, and she loves it. I can
ask her to check in on my dog while I am away if I have any concerns. Amazon
had all kinds of promotional stuff when I bought my Echo 5 with a little screen
and my Echo 10 and between a sale price and a promotional extra many dollars
off, I got a great deal on all of them.

Dan, I have used both the second and third generation of the echo dot. I think
the third generation has much better sound quality. It also has tactil markers
for all controls. I also tried the echo show 2. It has a camera and even
better sound quality that the echo dot. A friend who has significant hearing
loss got it. It claims to identify product labels, etc. I found it much more
difficult to set up than the echo dot. For whatever reason, I had trouble
getting it to tell me what various things were. Maybe I did not give it enough
time. I returned mine for a total refund. Am pretty sure you would be able to
return the echo dot for full refund too.

The Echo Dot can be had for less than $50 and is worth a try. You’ll probably
have to set it up through the Alexa app on your phone and you’ll need an amazon
account to link it to. Once set up, it should be fairly straight forward to
use. If it doesn’t work out, You can probably return it to amazon.

Hi all,

I recall seeing a fairly extensive discussion about these and other devices but
didn't pay much attention then because I didn't need one for myself. I still
do not need one for myself but my Mom who is 89 this year and is not very tech
savvied has lost almost all of her sight and doesn't want to use VO or talkback
on her phone. I am thinking of getting one of these because after demoing
giving voice commands to my Iphone she is now interested in doing something
similar but not to her phone. Her occupational therapist has convinced her
that devices like echos and echo dots are more accurate and would work better
for her. She says this is based on her experience as an OT.

My question is this, which devices seem the most forgiving for less than
perfect speech when giving voice commands? We also do not want to spend a ton
of money in case this doesn't work out well for her.

Any thoughts/ideas greatly appreciated.

RE: Aira and Be my eyes

2022-05-10 Thread deidreandlouise
Brandon
The point is that I get a better connection with BE MY EYES and I am sharing
minutes with someone for Aira. The fact that I get a clear call now and again
when using Aira seems to suggest the problem is at Aira's end. I need to call
their technical support to see what they can figure out about that. In years
past I didn't have that trouble. I ordered my SE second generation with someone
in Mexico through Aira and thatwasover 2 years ago.Nothng has changed with my
internet set up since that time.
I also thoroughly enjoy the kind of person who volunteers for BME. They are
always personable, and you can feel the world that surrounds them - you might
hear a child in the background, find out someone is in the service and
stationed overseas, or picking up in the UK or other parts of the world. I love
it.

That's odd, I've rarely had a bad connection with Aira. I don't get the point

gas meter read outs

2022-03-21 Thread deidreandlouise
Hello all

Is anyone using a "gas meter" to get a continuous read out of levels of things
like CO(carbon monoxide) and VOC'S (vollatile organic compounds)? I want to buy
one but worry that taking a screen shot of the digital display then using a
scanning program to decipher the read out won't be doable. I don't know how
small the print is on these devices or if they are in different colored panels
for the different measurements they are taking that might make reading the scan
difficult or impossible. It would be nice if these devices had built in chips
to record a given time's reading, if asked to record it andhold it in memory.
Then that data could be transferred to a fle and the data studied and compiled
in some app or manually by the user.

Is anyone using this kind of technology with any of their phone scanning apps?

The Audio Vault has the mp3 file of E.T. with audio description.
It is free. It is just the audio, of course.
You just \sign up with your email and you can go in and search for either
movies or TV shows. Tip, the first search field on the view all TV shows or
all movies is to order by date, skip that and use the second search field which
is by keyword.

Here is the direct link to the search results on that page, which won't
probably help until you have an account.

They are probably talking about some simpler adapters, but I know this one
works quite well.

And, if you have your charger plugged into it, you can access thumb drives, as
in, USB memory sticks.

But the USB keyboard seems to not need any power. I haven’t used it long
enough to know if there is much battery drain; but I’d be surprised if there
was.

The USB keyboard I have has the designated keys for volume up and down and they
work fine as well.

I have the lightning to USB camera adapter from Apple. I am writing this on a
generic USB QWERTY keyboard with no power connected.

So,I know it can work.

I'll try and find the link to the exact adapter but I'm pretty sure it is just
called Lightning to USB 3 Camera adapter.

It has a standard female USB A host port, a lightning port for power if you
need it and a short cable that plugs into the lightning port on the iPhone.

Hello
I just heard about an adapter that allows you to use your USB keyboard to
write on the iPhone. The little nub for a wireless keyboard would plug into
the adapter and the other end would plug in where the charger plugs in.
Would this work on an SE2020? I'd prefer using my regular keyboard to using
the bluetooth keyboard.

Oh, so I too need to get a cheap wired usb keyboard or are you saying that all
I need to do is lug the adapter into the phone and put the little wireless nub

No, your wireless keyboard needs no wires.

This is a wired adapter.

I’m not sure why a wireless keyboard would need anything other than the iPhone.

RE: Accessible App for a Good Robot Vacuum Machine

2021-06-28 Thread deidreandlouise
I just looked it up on Amazon and the only one I found was refurbished. It
didn't get very good ratings for deep cleaning, but those reviews can't always
be trusted.
I already own the most basic I Robot model, which I love, but it definitely is
not smart when it comes to mapping out the rooms because it is not wi-fi
enabled. It Beware, I hear that it will gather info about your layout and Alexa
or Amazon might start making suggestions about what you should buy to fill that
empty corner space in your middle room! My basic steadfast little I Robot
randomly searches out dirt acoustically then stays stuck on that spot until it
is clean, and clean it, it certainly does. I also hear the brushes on these
robotic vacuums as opposed to the silicone rollers catch a lot of hair and are
hard to clean.
Please let us know how this Shark Ninja works out for the new purchaser! I can
testify that my little Ninja blender/juicer works great. It has a very powerful
motor for such a tiny machine.

Will it eat small children if they get in the way?

RE: Amazon Alexa App Problem

2021-06-24 Thread deidreandlouise
Edward, and others
You can turn on airplane mode through the device itself. Is that what
you did, or did you turn it off on your phone?
I'm having allkinds of problems with my Echo 10. It no longer calls my
phone when I ask it to call me. It says it will call the Alexa App instead
which I don't want because I never have it open unless I want to adjust
settings. For days it would not stop what was playing when I asked. I noticed
this was the case if an ad was playing, but then it started doing it when I was
playing podcasts. It seems to have gotten itself together since that interval
of days.
There is a place on the phone, and possibly on the device too, to
update the App, so that might be in order.
Never hesitate to call the number on Amazon's main page that is listed
towards the bottom of the page. It provides a link for customers with
disabilities. I haven't called it in awhile, but you will be put through to
technical support. I can't remember now if this was under a heading for the
Alexa App or not, but it is on the opening page when you go to the on-line
shopping site.
The customer service is excellent and fast. You will not be on hold for
long. They willalso send you follow-up information if you ask for it.

Hi all,

The first things I tried were shutting down and restarting my iPhone and then I
tried resetting the phone. None of this made a difference. Last night, I
spent a lot of time doing some research on the Internet and trying a number of
solutions that people suggested. I finally found a post that recommended
turning off and then turning on airplane mode. I didn't hold out much hope for
this solution but I was getting a bit desperate. I have numerous Amazon
devices around the house and I didn't want to lose all the information about
these devices stored in the Alexa app. Surprisingly, turning off and then
turning on airplane mode solved the problem. I don't know what airplane mode
has to do with the Alexa app but I'm glad to have things working again. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

I had the exact same thing happen to me on two of my phones yesterday after
updating the Amazon Shopping app. Uninstalling the app, then doing a reboot,
and then installing the app again solved the problem. And yes, I did have to
sign back into the app as well as fix its notification settings.

I didn't do anything special, and I was able to view the episodes in a podcast.
I just went to the library, tapped on the podcast I was interested in and was
able to scroll down through the list of episodes. I had to flick right quite a
bit to get into the list, and there was a see more episodes button at the end.

I am having trouble navigating episode lists in the native Podcasts app. I used
to know how to do this, and don’t know if I am forgetting a step or if there is
a new bug in the process with VoiceOver.
My example is searching for Airacast, which I found but could only see the most
recent episode. I see that this year’s episodes are listed but can’t navigate
to any others even when I use the see all button.
I just upgraded to 14.5 on my iPhone 8 Plus.

It should be a setting you change in Settigs under Podcasts. Or maybe it is in
the Settings Tab in the Podcast App. It's there that you choose options to

reminder alerts back on track

2021-04-30 Thread deidreandlouise
Heelo

I don't know what I tweaked that worked - banners which would not stay
selected, or something in sounds, but my alerts are once more reading the
entire title of the Reminder. Thank goodness. I've missed a few too many
alerts in the last month and don't want to have to pick my phone up and
check manually for them.

I guess I could use the Echo, but I try to keep it
uncluttered of that kind of stuff. I'm ot sure that makes sense, but the
least build up of extraneous stuff it stores, not to my advantage, kind of
rubs me wrong.

One of my Echoes went off-line and I haven't figured that out
yet either. I guess I'll call Amazon customer service for customers with
disabilities. The tech service is excellent and is very easy to get through
to quickly.

2021-04-15 Thread deidreandlouise
I would urge beta testers to do a lot of the testing of features not just from
bluetooth keyboards but through touching and tapping and swiping on the screen.
I think things have been overlooked in the past in regard to swiping vs things
that work real well for those using bluetooth keyboards or braile devices with
their phones.

Since you mentioned this a few weeks ago, I have been doing this, and it works.
I also sometimes just turn off threading temporarily if I don't want to deal
with any added swiping and fussing. For a thread as long as a few mentioned
here, well, wow, I can't even imagine such a thread!

Yes, it is a problem especially with longer threads.

I don't keep that many messages in one thread, but if a thread happens to have
15 or 20 messages, I can experience that, so what I do is before opening the
thread, flick up with one finger to expand thread.

Then, it lists them out separately so it is like not having threading on until
you go back to the top of the group and fllick up to collapse thread and double
tap.

Over the years there have always been focus issues in message lists, and when

Then, when opening a message in the thread and using the Messages item in the

let’s say I’m on message 50 of 120 in the thread. I use Messages in the rotor

21.

These are just a couple of situations that are frustrating me like crazy.

I could try the GMail app or Outlook for Ios, but I like the native mail app

damn thing behave.

Surely I’m not the only one who’s having focus issues such as I’ve described
above.

Richard,

Whew , what an offer. Don't exhaust yourself!you will see or say, now way, it
will be impossible. I fear the pproblem will be the 4 or so voices that speak
interchangeably. Like I said though, any amount of transcription that could
save me time typing would be helpful. Set me straight if no transcription
programs would be capable of this, and please simplify things for me and tell
me what such apps are best at, and most useful for.

The podcast is This Week in Virology. The banter at the beginning and the
favorite PICS at the end of the show do not need to be transcribed. The emails
that they read towards the end of most shows are information packed, so I'd
love to be able to study them closely in order to repeat some of the details
I've heard.

Once a week there is something called a Clinical Update with
Daniel Griffin, and that is only him speaking until towards the end of the
show. I access the podcast using my iphone and the native podcast app, but here
is a link to last Sunday's episode which is one of the clinical updates, which
these days all pertain to Covid:

It is done after the recording is finished I think. It is $4.99.

Since I already have it, if you point me to a program you want I’ll see if I
can download and import the file and see how it does with it.

to the Today folder. I have to hit the back button to get there to mark a
particular reminder completed. I also don't know whythe heading for
catagories of reminders is still headed as 2020 even though the specific
reminders are marked with the correct 2021 designation.

Probably some of you remember how often I've mentioned that the less I have
to swipe or touch a device, the happier I am. It makes no sense to hit on
reminder when notified one has come up only to have to hit the back button
to get to the Today section of the App to markit completed. I do not need to
see Scheduled or whatever other categories are listed. I see I can update,
but I don't expect there will be any additional benefit to updating that
particular App. I never rush to update, and when I do often for the native
apps, it's just new names for things and perhaps a slightly different
structure for where things are. There may be essential changes for other
types of Apps, such as the reading services for the blind, or maybe security
patches, but if my phone still did what my first 4S did, I would not feel
like I was missing anything!

Yes, I saw where linking was involved with various things. Alexa also lets me
know what she can't do and how to do it, at least, when it comes to buying
added services. Has anyone noticed how you can't stop an ad when it is in
progress? I'm smiling.

If you don't have a disable link then maybe the skills you are looking at
aren't enabled in the first place.

Also keep in mind that many skills are not working simply by enabling them, for
example, if you have an Apple Music subscription and you want to make Apple
Music the default source for music when you ask Alexa to play music, you have
to not only enable the Apple Music skill but also link your account which means
at some point during the process you have to allow it and enter your Apple Id
and password.

more tab in the lower right hand corner of the screen to get to The screen

That's funny, I"'e ben wondering if the Amazon Lady was a whole other device!

I was not using the right language to get Alexa
to "cancel" a reminder. I only had one and she read it to me and first time
around she offerecme no options. Next I asked her to delete it. Second time
around she read it to me then asked if I wanted to cancel all those instances
of the reminder. That worked.

I still am not clear on how much talking to my iPhone Alexa is doing. I gave
Alexa permission to access my reminders, or I thought I did, but maybe that was
never an option. I also thought I allowed Alexa to access the calender and
email, but the only notifications I get are for email.

btw, I set Alexa to use follow-up mode but often she does not do it. I know it
works if I am on a set task like listening to a podcast, and it should work
within a specific amount of time to say something like pause or resume or go to
the beginning. I hate repeating myself to the Echo or anything or anyone else.
Hmmm, do I do too much of that here myself?

I’m clearly still in the dark. Thanks for your patience.

Reminders set on the echo device will not show up on your iPhone reminder app.

You can ask the Amazon lady, (I’m trying to avoid using her name as sometimes
the speech synthesizer reading her name invokes a response if you don’t have
headphones on,) what reminders do I have, etc.

Maybe it's time to get on the Echo list again and ask for sites
that have answers to all these basic questions. There is a spot for help and
feedback on the Alexa App so I thinkI'll review what is in there. When I looked
at the part of the App that reads "Accessibility" I don't remember anything
extensive in the way of settings in there.

If I ask Alexa what skills I have enabled, I am told that there are 5 of them
which are broad catagories such as games, trivia, song quiz, sounds… Yesterday
someone looking in the Alexa App on my phone saw 11 of them. It's confusing.
I'mconfusedtoo why reminders on my phone say one thing and a reminder I created
through Alexa is something different I told her to remind me of. That reminder
was not recorded in my Reminders App and neither does it show anywhere else
where I can delete it. Hmmm.

Back to Skills, I'd like to know, for example, what category of skills, if that
be what they are specific to, the TJ Sermonsstuff, or celebrity stuff, or Bible
stuff is in. It would be nice to see that. My main interests are in music,
science, the arts, and literature. I'd sure like to point to suggestions being
made to include those topics. I currently hear short lists that say do you want
to hear somethinglike TJ Sermons or somethingfrom the Bible, which I take are
part of skills not yet "launched" or"enabled" - I'm not even sure if those
terms are two different things or not. I assume they are things proposed I
might want to try.

Time to take these questions elsewhere.

Deirdre,

You can change the timer sounds in the Clock ap.

I discovered it when looking for a way to stop music after 1 hour at bedtime.
Among the sound options I discovered a "stop playing" setting, which works
really well.

However it also presents a problem when you want to use a timer, because you
would have to go in and change it. I solved that by asking Siri to set an
alarm when I need to time cooking, etc. You can ask Siri to set an alarm for a
specific time, or for as many minutes as you need.

Wow lousy instructions on how to get started with a new service. Should it
have been obvious in order to do anythingwith Audible I first need to download

RE: free, 60-day Audible trial

2021-03-04 Thread deidreandlouise
Ok, so the trick will be to learn how to add books to my library! I'll
get the hang of what the Echo can and can't do soon. How nice it was to simply
tell Alexa this morning to play This Week in Virology, and or WHMP on Tune-In,
or thename of other stations. The device clearly responds to specific commands
so getting that language correct wil be necessary.
There are so many options for books, news, music, etc. I was thinking
of renewing my subscription to Bookshare too!

You cannot search for audible books with the echo. Just purchase the book with
a credit through your computer would be the easiest, then once the book is
purchased, ask the echo to read your purchased book.

RE: New Echo

2021-03-04 Thread deidreandlouise
Patti

No, I cannot watch or listen to movies on the Echo. Someone kindly pointed out
it would not play movies and I would need a device with a screen! Apple is not
thinking people want to listen to movies not look at them with their eyes! I
amnew to this which is why I was imagining the device could do all kinds of
things that it was not designed to do! For instance, I thought I could ask
Alexa to open anapp on my phone, such as BARD, butno that is not it's job. I
could however set up Voice Control on my phone and then use Hey Siri to do that
withoutmy having to touch the phone. Now you see I'm getting into having too
many options territory, and to sort it all out, takes time and energy, and I'm
already frazzled from spending a day with the Echo. I did get it to play a Greg
Brown mix, and a local radio program, and podcast I like from today, and it is
reading my new mail, and I am sending my brother's Echo messages which I do as
recordings, and I pulled up an obscure Ice Cube song and played it with no
problem at all with the Echo finding it.

I can say that voice over is not reading everything in the app unless the
instructions I am getting from several different places are incorrect. For
example the first step to get to a specific place was tohit on a "menu" button
at thetop left of the AlexaApp. There is no spoken "menu" button that I can
find on the opening page of the app. I think I had the Home Tab selected and
tried another Tab to see if one would appear. No buttons or links in the roter
appear when I am on any given page I've been on within the Alexa app so far.
Does this mean that much of the app is not accessible?

I need to give this a rest and get on with the rest of my day!

I believe what I have is an echo fourth generation. It’s about the size of a
cantaloupe. No it does not have a screen. Maybe I will get a little one with a
tiny screen or the smaller screen so that I can just watch movies without
having to touch my phone. Thanks for cluing me into what was should’ve been
obvious. Anyway I’m playing around with this looking at commands seeing I still
have a lot of work to do to streamline it’s recognizing the specific podcast
and things like that that I want to play. This morning it’s doing a pretty good
job of doing it, Meaning I’m getting the syntax down that Alexa is best at
recognizing. I meant to write listen to movies not watch since I wouldn’t be
able to see a thing on any screen.

Hello all,

music services and podcasts and Tune In stations I listen to and Alexa was
able to find those. I can't however find the place to do that with video, TV
and/or movies I am subscribed to.

I really did imagine that I could tell Alexa to do things like open Bard and
continue reading what I was reading last. I assumed the Echo device was
totally privy to everything on my phone, as if it had a mirror image of it.
H, I'm smiling. Still I did manage to do a "drop in" message to my
brother's own Echo and he was indeed notified he had a message and when he
asked Alexa to play it, there I was on a live recording which is what I
chose to use as the medium.

I look forward to learning to do as much as I can with the
Echo "hands off.

Any tips anyone can provide about which sources are most
reliable and easy to follow would be greatly appreciated. This will take a
systematic approach to getting things set up at more than the most basic
level.

I have Nearby Explore on my iPhone, and from what I can tell it's still works
as it always has. I'm updating its map database right now. I see no reason why
you can't use it if you want to. I certainly am.

If you download Good Maps, do you need to delete Nearby Explorer?
I downloaded Nearby Explorer in July, 2019, and was planning to learn to use it
as soon as time permits.
But now some of their maps might be getting outdated.

Should I just start with the Good Maps manual, assuming there is one, and
forget about Nearby Explorer?

Thanks in advance for the advice,

RE: Talking GPS Apps

2021-02-11 Thread deidreandlouise
I have simplified my approach to making choices around the many offerings out
there that offer me good accessibility. I do not need 3 different GPS or
scanning Apps and if I find one that works well, and way better than Apps we
all tested out over the last ten years, I stick to them. Long gone is KNFB
Reader, Digitize, Seeing Eye, and Blind Square which I must not have tweaked
easily enough to use with great ease. I haven't looked at it in years, so I'm
not sure how it works now. I admire the techs and adaptive tech consultants on
this list, and their thoroughness in checking out the many different Apps is
impressive, and I am grateful to have access to their body of knowledge and
their willingness to share it.

I use Nearby Explorer On-Line. It's free and easy and very vocal. I don't know
if you can mark a route but it will tell you when you change direction which I
find essential at times I get turned around, or my dog takes me on a detour
when we are on a recreational walk.

In my town, I know the streets throughout the entire city. I can tell which
side of a street I am on based on even and odd number addresses, which is
useful for when I've crossed a street unknowingly, like in my neighborhood
where it's sometimes hard to tell where the corner is this time of year due to
messy clumps of snow and low traffic flow. At night when temperatures plummet
around here, I make sure I have my phone charged and in my pocket with cellular
data and location tracking already turned on. If my dog decides she wants a
longer walk, and does not default to our usual turns, well, with not a soul to
be found on the street, in a split second I can open Nearby Explorer and turn
her around and insist on getting home

I am told the names of streets when they are nearby, and I get block number
info like 1-33 or 36-59, and that's cool.

One thing I'd definitely like to limit is hearing locations such
as shops that are at quite a distance away from where I am, like as far away as
a whole block but I'm not sure which setting it is. I think it did exist in the
full App I once had on my phone, but I'm not sure about the newer On-Line App.
It is an App you download so I'm not sure how the On-Line version differs from
the older App.

Most GPS apps work fine with VoiceOver.

Google Maps is my go to GPS app. There is a setting for more detailed walking
directions for visually impaired.

Blind Square is a great app for orientation and can launch Apple Maps, Google
Maps, and others to get turn by turn directions.

Good Maps Explore is the new version of the prior APH map that was paid to have
maps stored locally. It does both orientation and turn by turn directions,
maps are stored in the cloud It shows up as Explore on the iPhone..

Microsoft Soundscape is very popular, especially if you have bone conduction
headphones since it speaks out of the side closest to the street/business, etc.
 So you get real orientation.

Seeing Eye GPS is the Cadillac of GPS apps for the blind at $200.

Lazarillo is also an excellent, free, orientation app and can do its own
walking directions, as well as launch other maps for turn by turn
driving/riding directions.

MapQuest is good in the United States, but not as user friendly as the others.

But again, they all work fine with VoiceOver.

Any suggestions for a talking GPS-App which can be downloaded to an iPhone? I
am trying to find one that is fully accessible using Voice Over. Thanks and

You can use dectalk with NVDA with an addon. It works real good on windows10.
