Re: iPod Touch Fifth Gen headset has no microphone

2012-10-22 Thread gabey8
If it has no microphone, how can it handle Skype calls? Or voice dictation of
any sort?

Did the latest iPod Touch get Siri, or was that restricted to the iPad 3 and
the iPhones 4s and 5? If the latest Touch has Siri, it needs to have a
microphone somewhere or it won't be able to perceive what we're saying.

Hi Jim,

I understand why the Nano does not come with a microphone headset and it’s not
what I am complaining about. I am talking about the iPod Touch, both third and
fourth Generation iPod Touches came with the same headset as the iPhones which
of course included a microphone.

Sieghard and all:

You are indeed correct in say ing that the New Nano iPods do not have inline
controls. As for the home button, I personally do not see a problem with it.
The unit appears to be very responsibe. Still, I think that the extra money,
even for an iPod 16 GB, would be well spent.

Cheers.

Subject: iPod Touch Fifth Gen headset has no microphone

Hello Listers,

I am just listening to the latest Today in iOS podcast. Since the iPod Touch
Fifth Gen is now shipping Rob mentioned that iFixIt.com of course did their
close examination of it’s guts. Among other things they discovered that unlike
the iPhone 5 which has 1 Gig of RAM the iPod Touch continues to have only 512
Mb along with the A5 processor which we already knew. They also mentioned that
the home button design apparently is not as good as that of the iPhone 4S or 5,
I guess we’ll have to wait and see if iPod Touch users will have issues with
the home key over time.

Lastly, Rob said that apparently the ear pods that ship with the iPod Touch
have no microphone which is almost too weird to believe and, if so, I think
Apple should be ashamed to skimp on that just to save a couple of bucks
especially since the iPod Touch Fifth Gen has SIRI and Facetime. Maybe some of
those who received their iPod Touch Fifth Gen can confirm that although I doubt
IFixIt would get it wrong. In the end it’s not a deal breaker, but it basically
means Apple not only maybe saves a few Dollars by designing the ear pods
without microphone but they also force people who plan to use their iPod Touch
a lot for Skype and so on to buy an extra set of ear pods; this is almost bad
enough so that I would buy a third party headset just in order not to give
Apple the extra $30.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Deleting an App from the App Store

2012-10-13 Thread gabey8
I kept getting an error like that yesterday.

I didn't find a way to get rid of that app from my update list. However, the
good news is, TODAY, when I went to update apps on my list, the update for that
app downloaded with no problem. So my thought is to give the App Store glitch a
few hours to straighten itself out, and try again.

Re: Left side loud speaker

2012-09-16 Thread gabey8
If you mean what looks like two speakers on the bottom of the phone -- even
though they are made to look the same, one is actually a microphone, and the
other is a speaker. I had exactly the same question when I first got my iPhone
4S last year -- I thought they were both speakers, and one wasn't working. I
did a bunch of treasure-hunting on Google, trying to figure out what was wrong,
until I hit on the right search combo and realized that the phone was OK after
all. Thank goodness. (Grin)

On my iPhone 4s with the latest ios built, no matter what settings I do, I
can’t get the left side loud speaker working.
Is anyone having same problem? What’s the remedy?

Re: What can you say to Siri in iOS 6?

2012-09-16 Thread gabey8
One drawback of a "who is near me" command is that it most likely would have to
be a feature that is enabled by each person -- in other words, the person would
have to be willing to share their location (broadcast it, actually) in order to
make themselves findable. Not everyone is comfortable with doing that.

Does this capability currently exist in iOS or even Android? I know that the
ability exists to transmit one's location at a given address. But is it
possible yet to narrow that down to "broadcasting where we are in a large room,
so others in the room can find us"?

Thanks this is great I see quite a number of good commands that are new to the
system. Possibility of future evolution? Does anyone else on the list
considering our group take note of the who is near me command? I assume
naturally that will only work at this time with folks who have iPhones, but the
future possibilities for us blind folks are quite interesting. No more
wondering around trying to find one another at a gathering.

Re: The new youtube app

2012-09-12 Thread gabey8
If I understand right, the pre-loaded YouTube app is going to go away when we
upgrade to iOS 6. So I'm glad that Google stepped up to the plate and created
an app we can install, in place of the one that's going to disappear.

Hi,
I am wondering once you install the new youtube app, can you remove the one
which is preloaded on the iPod touch and iPhone?
