RE: Phone not locking
Hello all, I used to have to activate my phone by typing in a code. Now suddenly the phone does not shut off. Please give me step by step instructions to get that setting back. It used to stay on for about 3 minutes if I had not touched it before shutting off. Many thanks. Marilyn -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. RE: Problem with Whatsapp
Hello everyone, I had followed all the steps list members had suggested, all in vain. I ended up calling Apple for support. I was told that there was a Whatsapp glitch and they were aware and working on it. I was told to make my calls or send messages using the exact words and word order shown below: “Message (say your person’s name) mobile with Whatsapp” Substitute “call” for “message” if you want to call instead of sending a message. It works and I have had no trouble since using this format. I don’t know how many others have had the same problem. Thanks to all for your suggestions. Take care. RE: Be My AI and what it may teach us?
Carolyn, me too! My husband describes all kinds of things as we drive or eat out in a restaurant. He will do this without me asking and I love to know what is around me. Onetime while eating out with a friend in another state, Don mentioned that their were canoes attached to the ceiling in a Mexican food place that our friend goes to often. She was astonished because in all the times she was there, no one ever told her about the décor. What good do these descriptions do for me as I can see nothing anymore? The information makes me feel more a part of the world. I was interested in stuff when I could see and still enjoy the explanations. Whatever a person wants or needs is the right thing for them. Not all people would like what I like. What fun to know your mind works kinda like mine. As Mary says though, anytime you're getting a description from another source, even if it's a sighted person, it isn't going to be free of interpretation. Reminds me of a friend of mine in college who was helping me pick out a greeting card. She told me she would just describe the card to me and wouldn't be subjective at all. Later on she described a card as "yucky yellow." We had a good laugh over that, but I didn't get that card. For those who don't want any kind of interpretation of a description coming from an AI, I wonder what they would consider an acceptable description. I'd find it interesting if someone took a response from Be My AI and then sterilized it into what they would find acceptable. I'm guessing that the more sterile descriptions wouldn't be nearly as popular and most people find the interpretation of the image as one of the more interesting parts of the description. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) =>÷ Chaltain at Outlook, USA -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Monday, November 13, 2023 10:13 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Be My AI and what it may teach us? RE: Update or dead
Hello everyone, My 2023 iPhone seems to be dead though it is fully charged. The alarm went off and I pressed the home button to stop it. Nothing after that. Once before it also seemed dead and I ended up at the Apple store. They told me it was in this state because of an update. The consultant said to press the volume up and down buttons, hold the power on button for the count of 100 etc. etc. Of course if it is again an update causing the problem, I cannot remember the sequence of steps to activate the phone again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Marilyn -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. RE: Time being announced
Hello all, A few days ago I noticed something strange. My iPhone started announcing the time every minute, whether I was checking messages, on a call, or anything else. Whatever I was doing would be interrupted every minute by the announcement. It never used to be like this. Has any one else had this situation? Why did this happen, and how can I stop the announcements? Thanks for any help with this. Marilyn -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Good deal, Mark. At least now you know what it is. Yes, I know. Change when it comes is difficult to adapt to. Some days I wish for the good old days. While interesting, this did not pinpoint the source of the enhanced audio in face time. However, I was able to determine that the new audio sound, when in Face Time, is a function of the 14 and not of the OS. iOS 16.2 on the 11, the iPad, and a couple of other phones does not reproduce the effect. The effect has nothing to do with VoiceOver, either. I was able to contact a friend, who also recently purchased iPhone 14 Pro and he confirmed the enhanced sound effect which, is not bad; it just makes the person on the other end sound as though they are in the same room as you are. I know, I know, I should be pleased, right? Put it down to me being a man who does not like unexpected or unexplained change (big smile). Richard and Jenny, Thanks for the information. I have followed your steps Richard, but my swoosh when sending a text message is still not sounding. I cannot find it anywhere. I called Apple and the expert said that the swoosh does not function with voice over. Why then was I having the swoosh on my 5S? I just don't understand this. When the phone is locked, it says Voice Control is no longer listening. Tell Siri, Turn Off Voice Control. If the mute switch is not on, then check the following. First, just check settings, sounds and haptics, and make sure the sounds you want are all selected. If that doesn't fix the problem, there may be issues with the new layout in iOS 15. With iOS 15, they added an extra layer. Go to settings, mail, Notifications, and the last item on that screen will be customize notifications. Go in there and set your sound notifications. HTH. Finding sounds
Hello everyone, I finally had to take the plunge because my 5S gave up the ghost. I now have a 2022 3. I have found the selections for indicating when I receive new emails, texts, and voice mails. I have selected my preferred sounds, but I hear no sounds when the messages arrive. I also used to hear the swoosh sound when I sent a text message, but this too is not sounding now. All I hear when sending a text is "done." Please give me step by step where I can go to fix this. Also, I keep getting "voice over is no longer listening" along with the sound that indicates the phone is off. How can I turn that verbal announcement off? Many thanks for any help. First is that Marilyn has nothing to apologize for, and I hope she doesn’t judge this whole list by a few rude members. As anyone can tell, this list is full of members who want to help other blind people. But it also can’t keep mean and self righteous people from joining the list. IMHO, the moderator doesn’t need to give this person a second chance before kicking them off the list. Marilyn made an honest mistake, but anyone who would tell someone else on the list that they don’t have a brain, is just not someone who should be given another chance or be allowed on this list. Finally, I’m on plenty of lists which have nothing to do with blindness and I don’t find blindness related lists to have a greater number of rude people on it then your average list. I wish it were the case that blind people would kinder and more gracious then the general public, but unfortunately this isn’t the case. I also don’t think that the opposite is true, and that is that the blindness community is more mean spirited or has more rude people in it then the general community. RE: update your iphone 5 today! + question
Hello all, I’m not sure what I did, but am having trouble finding out what my latest update was. I have an i5S and wanted to check. I think I did a two finger double tap, and am now not able to hear anything when pressing the home button though voice over is still on. I was trying to go to the app switcher, close whatever apps were running, and then check my last update. Please help. Many thanks. Re: How to Set Up and Use Personal Hotspot on iPhone
Thanks for such a comprehensive docuument. When I thought to ask a friend with the same phone as my husband’s what hot spot meant...I was in seventh heaven. It gives me one more way to connect with my Victor Stream in case I need to down load something. It’s like a miracle. Not that I always need it, but so great when you are in a pinch. And more secure than a public hot spot. Thanks again, Marcio. Marilyn From: 'Marcio' via VIPhone Sent: Saturday, June 01, 2019 8:24 PM To: ViPhone List Subject: How to Set Up and Use Personal Hotspot on iPhone Ever been stuck in a situation where you need to get a computer or tablet online with no Wi-Fi nearby? If you've got an iPhone with a 3G or 4G data connection, that problem can be easily solved thanks to Personal Hotspot. Personal Hotspot Explained Personal Hotspot is a feature of iOS that lets iPhones running iOS 4.3 and higher share their cellular data connection with other nearby devices via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. This feature is generically known as tethering. When using Personal Hotspot, your iPhone acts like a wireless router for the other devices, transmitting and receiving data for them. If you have the available data on your cellular plan, it's an excellent alternative to using public WiFi hotspots. Personal Hotspot Requirements In order to use Personal Hotspot on an iPhone, you need: 1.. An iPhone 4 or newer 2.. iOS 4.3 or higher 3.. A data plan that supports tethering/Personal Hotspot 4.. A USB cable, if you want to connect devices that way. Adding Personal Hotspot to Your Data Plan These days, most major phone companies include Personal Hotspot by default as part of their data plans for iPhone. AT&T and Verizon include it on all of their plans, while T-Mobile offers it as part of its unlimited data plan. Sprint charges for it, with prices depending on how much data you want to use. And all of that can change on a dime. Most regional carriers and prepaid carriers support it as part of their data plans, as well. If you're not sure whether you have Personal Hotspot on your data plan, check with your phone company. Note: For important information about Personal Hotspot data use, see Data Use with Personal Hotspot, below. Another way to know if you have it is to check your iPhone. Tap the Settings app and look for the Personal Hotspot menu beneath Cellular. If it's there, you likely have the feature. How to Turn on Personal Hotspot Once Personal Hotspot is enabled on your data plan, turning it on is really simple. Just follow these steps: 1.. Tap Settings. 2.. Tap Personal Hotspot. 3.. Move the Personal Hotspot slider to on/green. On iOS 6 and earlier, the steps are Settings > Network > Personal Hotspot > move the slider to On. If you don't have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or both enabled when you turn on Personal Hotspot, a pop-up window asks if you want to turn them on or only use USB. Enabling Instant Hotspot Using Continuity With Instant Hotspot, the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone (or cellular iPad) can give Internet access to any other Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch without having to enter the password. First up, you'll need to make sure that the iOS device you want to use as the Hotspot is signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID as the Mac or iOS device you want to provide internet access to. Each device will also need to have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. Here's how it works: 1.. On your Mac, use the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar to choose the name of the iPhone or iPad providing your Personal Hotspot. 2.. On your iPad, iPod touch, or another iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, then tap the name of the iPhone or iPad providing your Personal Hotspot. 1.. Connect your Mac to the Hotspot device via the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar. 2.. On a different iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, then tap the name of the iPhone or iPad providing your Personal Hotspot. 3.. Your third device will now connect to your hotspot without having to enter the password. Personal Hotspot Connection Established Connecting other devices to your Personal Hotspot via Wi-Fi is easy. Tell the people who want to connect to turn on Wi-Fi on their devices and look for the name of your phone (as shown on the Personal Hotspot screen). They should select that network and enter the password shown on the Personal Hotspot screen on the iPhone. How to Know When Devices Are Connected to Your Personal Hotspot When other devices are connected to your iPhone's hotspot, you'll see a blue bar at the top of your screen and on your lock screen. In iOS 7 and up, the blue bar shows a number next to a lock or interlocking loops icon that lets you know how many devices are connected to your phone. Data Use with Personal Hotspot One important thing to remember: unlike traditional Wi-Fi, your Personal H

RE: Straight to voicemail
Hello all, I discovered this morning that calls are going straight to voicemail on my iPhone. I did not make this change and don’t know how to make the phone ring again. RE: JAWS and creating websites
Everyone, Please accept my apologies – I didn’t realize I sent my request to the wrong list. Nimer, thank you for pointing out my mistake. Many thanks also for your detailed information. Marilyn From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Nimer Jaber Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2018 1:01 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: JAWS and creating websites Hello, this message is off-topic for this list, but I will respond anyway, in hopes that you get this. Frist, this all depends largely on the type of site you wish to create. In order to put up a site, you need to have or host a domain name, this is like the address of your site, and the server space, where the website files are stored and visitors are directed to view your site. You also need to figure out the purpose for your site... like is it going to be a static, text-based site with a few images and pages that don't change very often, or do you want a dynamic site with ever-changing content and the ability of your users to interact with you? Here are a couple of scenarios: 1. Since you are asking about an accessible site host, or at least that is my guess, it sounds like you may be looking for a site builder. Most site builders are inaccessible, so the recommended route for a static site is to learn HTML, maybe a bit of PHP and Java scripting. You don't need much to get started with a static page, and w3schools has some excellent tutorials with examples that will guide you through what you need to do. 2. If you wish to put up a dynamic site, I recommend a content management system. Many in the blind community swear by Wordpress. I personally love and adore Drupal for its ability to be highly customized, and for the large community and the vast amount of modules. documentation is great, as is accessibility. You can get started with a Drupal install without knowing a whole lot about database administration or PHP, but if you want more than what you can achieve with modules or if modules break, you may need to dig into PHP code and into database admin. there are some excellent drupal hosts out there that have one-click installs, meaning that you tell it to install Drupal an then you can configure it the way you like without extra work on your end. I personally recommend going down the road of managing my own server space, even if it is virtual space. I recommend Vultr highly, but Linode is pretty okay too. for this, a knowledge of terminal-based Linux commands is recommended, or at the very least, a desire to learn and read and follow instructions. Domain providers are plentiful. I have had experience and can recommend namecheap, 1&1, GreenGeeks, and Dreamhost for domain providers. I haven't tried bluehost lately, but that worked okay. Google Domains, at the moment or as of a few months ago, was garbage in terms of screen reader accessibility. I reported issues to them, but that team at Google has so far been very unresponsive to feedback. If you are interested in Google Domains accessibility, reach out to the accessibility help desk with Google and bug them about it. They might wake up to the fact that blind people want and need access to the admin tools, and not just the user-facing tools. Anyway... Free Vs. Paid depends on the scale of your site, whether you are okay with a subdomain or your own domain, how much traffic you expect to get, how reliable you want the site to be, and how much tech support you wish to receive. In general, unless you can't afford it, I recommend a paid solution for hosting. If you don't choose to use Linode, I do recommend Greengeeks or 1&1 for web hosts. Dreamhost worked pretty well for me as well. Otherwise, if you want to manage your own server space, I love Vultr and I used to have Linode and found them to be acceptable as well. Vultr is faster and their plans offer more for the price, but Linode isn't terrible. Anyway, I hope this helps. Sieghard, I have a 5S and am with T-Mobile. I think I am the only one still with a 5S. I assume you are in the US? If so then as far as I know only Verizon phones are unlocked. Easiest way to find out for sure is if you have a friend or family member who has a phone with the same size SIM (most likely a Nano SIM unless you are still on an iPhone 5S which I believe had a Micro SIM and if said person uses a different provider. Just take out your SIM and put in his or her SIM, if you get service on their carrier your phone is unlocked. OK, I should say most likely unlocked, if they use an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) who works on the same network as the main carriers than it is possible or likely that a locked aT&T phone would work with a SIM from an MVNO using the AT&T network. But if you are with AT&T and a friend is with T-Mobile or Verizon and their SIM works in your phone then it's definitely unlocked. I haven't been to Africa, but I have been to the Philippines quite a lot because my wife is from there and also to Thailand and Laos and in travelling there I have been through South Korea, China, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. 1. Insure your phone against theft, you should ask your home insurance, I could add my phone with a $100 deductable for a mere $35 or so a year and that covers loss, theft and damage. 2. Keep your phone out of sight in public as much as possible. Again, it may depend a bit on where you are going, but if you do go to countries where a lot of people are relatively poor an iPhone is a huge prize/incentive for theft. 3. As for using your phone, if it is unlocked you can buy a local SIM in whatever country you go to and put it into your phone. This will give you a local number and access to whatever prepaid plans are available. You probably will have more use for data than for calling and SMS so try to find a plan which gives you as much data as possible. 4. Don't expect very fast data speeds or even the greatest coverage, we take a lot for granted in our highly developed countries. If you are going to South Africa maybe Fanus can chime in and give you some advice as to which carriers might have the best prepaid plans. RE: Seeing AI review
Good morning Richard, I do not mean to clog the list but your address does not show, only your name. I have pressed reply and not reply all, but am not sure that my message won't go to the whole list. It is not a private message but meant only to clarify some of my questions since I am new to the list. Are you developing or launching a new app? Is it in the APP store? What exactly is it called when you search for it? Is it free? Are listers testing it and providing feedback? Is it connected with some or other company? Thanks. Marilyn Dr. Marilyn Bland - Dallas, Texas -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2017 9:58 PM To: 'ViPone list (viphone@googlegroups.com)' Subject: Seeing AI review First, for those who missed the details from the app description, this is a research project. I, like others, no doubt hope it continues to develop and improve. Though, in my opinion, for a first release, this is extremely impressive. It has different features available depending on the iOS device being used. I have the iPhone 5s and the 6s. The 5s has the following features, or as they call them, channels, available: Short Text Document Person Scene Beta. If you double tap on the menu button in the upper right, you also have Face Recognition. The 6s has: Short Text Document Product Person Scene Beta. If you double tap on the menu button, you also have Face Recognition. I have tested out all the channels. Short Text, works amazingly well. I wasn't hearing anything out of my computer when I turned it on, so I pointed the camera at the computer screen and almost immediately found out that Windows 10 was dealing with updates. Once Jaws finally kicked in and was saying the same thing, Seeing AI kept up with the changes darn near as quickly as Jaws did. Document, I have only done a few with it, but it is almost as good as KNFB reader for accuracy, plus it guides you as you position the phone and will tell you to hold steady when it has the whole page in view and will automatically take the picture. The biggest advantage of this app though is that it maintains the formatting! It will tell you there is a heading and it will separate paragraphs, so you can flick through sections of text with VoiceOver. Plus you can share the result. You cannot at this point add a second page, but this is worth a lot to me. Product, as others have noted, it is very fast and you have to hold it a ways away from the object depending on how big the object is. A small can, you can be closer than with a large box. Once it sees a bar code, it will start beeping and the beeps get faster and then you want to hold steady and it will tell you the result. Far faster than any other bar code app I have used. Person, this will simply tell you if there are faces in the camera view, then if you take a picture, it will guess at the gender and age of the person My wife it said was 41 the first time and she is 62. But, people have always said she looks much younger than she is. They probably didn't mean that young though, grin. Scene Beta, as it says, it is in beta. It tries to describe the scene when you take a picture. Not too bad, but it is a beta. Face Recognition, When you select that, it will ask you to take three pictures of someone, or have them take three pictures of themselves, then an edit box will appear and you can write in their name. When you point the camera at them later, it will say who they are. This works very quickly once you get a label entered. I have an iPod Touch 6th Generation that is running the iOS beta, so I'm not sure it isn't an iOS issue, but it just kicks me out of the app when I try to use it on the Touch. At this point, I'd give it a solid 4 stars. Just my two cents worth. Richard -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
