Hi,

Below is the link to the page which contains information and a link to David
Woodbridge's podcast on the Air Pods. I received my Air Pods yesterday and I
decided to listen to his podcast before I set mine up. It is excellent.

You can't turn them on or off and while I don't have a set of them I did try a
pair at an Apple Store and I am pretty sure I remember that the battery status
was displayed in the status line on the iPhone where this is usually showing
for supported devices. I don't think you see how much battery is left in the
case, though.

Jennifer,

David Woodbridge recently posted a fabulous podcast tutorial on setting up
Airpods on AppleVis.

I do not have the URL but I'm certain that a quick Google search will find it.

Give it a listen.

isn't there a button on the case? A button to turn them off or on?
Thanks.

RE: Any Time Warner app users out there

2016-05-05 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

We did switch from Time Warner to FIOS in the latter part of February, although
I was uncertain about the accessibility of their FIOS Mobile app, which allows
users to watch TV on an iDevice. Actually, before we switched, I did write a
message to this list, asking if anyone was using the app. One person did say
that she was using it successfully. Well, I began to play with the app and I
did it one day over the phone with a sighted friend who was using the app. It
really didn't make much difference if a sighted person or a blind person was
using it. But, the buttons in the menu were labeled for a sighted person and
for a VoiceOver user, they all sounded like "circle arrow." Once I picked the
right "circle arrow" button, (I pressed the second one after hearing "menu
Image,") all the channels are labeled correctly and there is an "option" button
that is labeled after each one. When that button is clicked, there are choices
that are labeled. So, my husband, who is also a Voiceover user, and I
regularly watch TV using our iPhones. Brian, I'd be happy to help you with the
app. If you want to just hear what it would be like, we can do it over the
phone. I don't have your phone number, so, if you do want help, send me an
e-mail off list. I will admit, though, that the Time Warner is easier to use,
but, we really like FIOS much better and we are saving money with it.

Thanks so much for confirming. Looks like I am going to make the switch back as
the $30 in savings for Verizon Fios is not worth all the headaches with their
absolute lack of accessibility and obviously they have no plans to improve the
accessibility of their website or app. Ridiculous for a communications company
to have such poor accessibility.

RE: Using the Fios Mobile app

2016-01-15 Thread Myrna Votta
There seems to be two different apps: I think that the FIOS Mobile app is used
for streaming TV and movies. The app for paying bills and other account stuff
is the My FIOS app. I've been trying to figure out if the FIOS Mobile app is
useable with Voiceover so that we can stream live TV if we install FIOS. We
receive our Verizon cell and land line bill in Braille and I pay it using
online banking. Therefore, right now, I'm only needing the TV streaming app to
work.

That’s odd as I used to be on Time Warner but also switched to Fios. While I
found the Time Warner app to be very accessible I have had no luck with the
Fios app. Are you using the app to only watch live tv? I tried using the app
for on demand programs and that was a nightmare. Also how do you pay your bill
as the app to pay your bill while accessible is a nightmare to navigate. Thanks,

Using the Fios Mobile app

2016-01-14 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

Our apartment house just got access to Verizon Fios and because lots of our
friends and family think that it far exceeds Time Warner, which is our current
ISP, we signed up. However, because of my smashed finger needing to heal from
a recent surgery, FIOS won't Be installed until near the end of February. SO,
we probably can cancel and stay with Time Warner. For us, it probably will
depend on the accessibility of their FIOS Mobile app. Currently, we use the
Time Warner app to access TV in rooms that don't have a real TV. That app is
very accessible with Voiceover. So, my question is, have any of you used the
FIOS Mobile app to access TV and, if you have, how accessible is it? Are there
any tips that will make it easier to use?

Myrna

RE: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-21 Thread Myrna Votta
Since I have an iPhone and and an iPad Air, I upgraded to IOS 9 on both
devices. I also chose the Siri enhanced US female voice for both of them.
But, the strange thing is that, although both voices sound alike, their quality
and intonation is very different. When they read the home screens they read
them alike, but, when I used them in the Kindle app, they were very different.
Siri on my iPhone 6 had good intonation and was very expressive; however, on
the iPad, she did not pronounce words as well and she did not pause after
either a comma nor a period. I wonder why there should be such a difference
between Siri on the iPhone and Siri on the iPad?

RE: Time warner apps was Comcast accessibility apps

2015-03-13 Thread Myrna Votta
I agree that it has improved; however, my husband and I have been using the TWC
app to watch TV on both the iPhone and the iPad for about two years. It hasn't
been perfect, but, it has been pretty accessible. When we select the live TV
tab, the shows are arranged for us by networks A to Z. We do hear the name of
the show and can double tap on it to bring it up. However, we don't hear
either the name of the network to which it belongs, nor the channel number.
But, we can figure it out. I have also used the on demand tab and have found
past shows.

Also, the Xfinity remote is partially accessible through a beta version of

the right arrow and enter to turn on voice guidance.

RE: Apple TV Question

2015-01-11 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

For awhile, we have been thinking about purchasing an Apple Tv because,
apparently, it is easier to access Netflix and other such services on the Apple
Tv, as opposed to the Apps on the iDevices. We have the bose Sound bar, but,
we have connected it directly to the audio outputs on our cable box, rather
than the TV. We do have a Samsung TV, which we use when we have company; but,
since my husband and I are totally blind, we simply want the audio. So, here's
the question, rather than connecting the Apple TV to the actual TV set, can we
connect it directly to the cable box and still get Netflix? I was wondering if
that is possible because isn't the video signal, like the audio signal, coming
from the cable box?

Hi Richard,
If all you want to do is stream purely audio programming, such as your
iTunes, or other audio sources through your Apple TV to the sound bar, you
don't need a TV.
However, if you want to watch something on the Apple TV which has a video
component, such as Netflix, or some other video thing, then yes, you need
that TV connection. Or the thing won't work. It needs to see the video. That
doesn't mean you have to use the TV for your audio. But it does mean you
need the HDMI from your AppleTV to the television.
This is true for my first generation Apple TV. I have no reason to think it
would be any different for the second generation, but I can't prove it. When
I looked up the differences, the only thing I found was at the
second-generation let you have a higher video then what I have, 1080 P
versus whatever it is I have that I don't remember.

Re: Otterbox case problem

2014-10-20 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

I experienced the same problems when I first bought the case. Now, after
having the case for about three weeks, the problems have disappeared. To try
to solve the problem, I removed the silicone part and streched it a bit because
I had been able to flick when the phone was encased in the plastic portion. It
was when I put the phone in the silicone part of the case that I had the
problem. It really does get better. I almost returned the case, but, I really

RE: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-18 Thread Myrna Votta
Sally is the default voice for the Kindle Fire HDX. I know this because I
bought the Kindle. One just needs to go to settings, text to speech and that
is how Joey, Amy and Bryan are downloaded for free. Actually, I had Joey read
a book by a male author to me and I thought that he did a pretty good job. I
find that he reads better when the rated is a bit faster than the default rate.

If you are easily offended by a rood statement concerning shoving an object

I recorded a humorous item that some may have seen floating around the
 internet using Voice Dream Reader.

I did it to show the qualitative difference not only in the Amy voice from
Ivona, but the way it handles the text.

I had thought James was the best voice in a long time, but Amy blows him
away. I have not yet decided if I am going to purchase the Joey voice from
 Ivona.

The Ivona voices are $4.99, but at least, in my opinion, Amy is worth it.

James reads the below text first, then Amy.

RE: Apex staying paired with IPad and IPhoneBluetooth and

2013-12-11 Thread Myrna Votta
It often happens that when you are unsuccessful at pairing the Apex, or any
other device with either the iPad or the iPhone, you need to begin the
entire process all over again. But, first, you need to tell the iPad to
forget this device. You can then attempt to pair and if you still hear
the iPad tell you that search is dimmed, you probably will need to turn off
BlueTooth in both the iPad, as well as the Apex and reboot both devices and
start the entire pairing process again. Unfortunately, you don't have much
time to enter the and then quickly find the pair button. Sometimes I
have been lucky and have paired very quickly; however, the first time I
paired my Apex with an iPhone, it took me about an hour to do it.

What helps is to turn off or lock the first device before pairing

There is an active discussion going on the BrailleNote list where

It seems that when I get my apex and IPad finally paired and work

Should I maybe completely turn off the device I was using with

RE: Inaccurate Reporting of Apps Store Upgrades During Release Crush was RE: app store issue

2013-09-20 Thread Myrna Votta
As I had written last evening, just about the same thing happened to me. I
thought that that it was due to having clicked on not now, when I was
given the choice to automatically update all apps. Well, this morning, when
I powered on my iPad and went to the app store, I was presented with about
15 or so apps that could be updated. I did update all of them. I then
began to think that, as you said, it must have been a server issue yesterday
that was causing all of this strange behavior.

During most of yesterday, my Apps Store badge with the number of upgrades
went from 44 to nothing even though I had not upgraded anything. When I
opened the Apps Store, I was told all apps were updated. This strange
behavior apparently had something to do with the server crush related to the
release of iOS 7. Today my Apps Store badge once again says 44 updates
available.

I've found patience and a wait and see attitude work much better for me as

IOS7.01 is out

I thought someone would have put this on the list, but, I guess that none of
you have seen it as yet. I just received my new iPhone this morning, after
standing on line at the local Verizon store for about an hour and a half.
Surprise1 When I got it home and began to tweak some settings, I received a
message that there was a software update. 7.01. When I looked at the
details, the message was that there were bug fixes. I really haven't
noticed anything different as yet. I had updated my iPad mini on Wednesday
to 7.0, but, I have only played around with it for a short period of time.
So, probably, that's why I haven't noticed anything as yet.

RE: iPad and battery and battery pack questions

2013-09-10 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi Reggie,

I have used a couple of the external battery pack charging units on both my
iPhone and iPad Mini. With the new iPad, the iPad Mini, and the iPhone 5,
you need to use the Lightning cable that comes with all of those devices. I
haven't seen a charging unit (with the exception of the charger that is
included with those devices) that includes the lightning cable. Therefore,
you need to insert the small end of the lightning cable into the iDevice and
the other end with the USB connection into the USB port of the external
charger. If you are going to purchase the larger iPad you will need to buy
an external battery pack charger that is at least 55 miliamps. If you
purchase the Mini iPad or the iPhone, you can probably get away with an
external battery charging unit that is 28 miliamps. But, I would go with
the more powerful charger because it will charge a device faster. I have
also used my charging units to charge the new Humanware Stream and my
Brailliant BI. Those charging units are great.

Hi Reggie, battery life in the iPad is far longer than the iPhone, because
the device is larger and the battery has a far higher capacity. The external
charger you have will charge your iPad, but depending on the charger's
capacity it may or may not fully charge it. Certainly you'll get fewer
charges of your iPad with the external battery before needing to recharge it
than you will get chargers of the iPhone.

The battery life of the iPad and iPad Mini is really impressive.

Hi all, have a question about the iPad. Is there a difference in battery

When I upgrade in December the hole for the charger will change. I have an

slots for devices for charging. Do I need an adapter? Will I be able to use
it for the iPad? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

It appears Apple are not streaming this one, sadly. There are plenty of
Twitter feeds and live blogs, and Apple will put the full video up an hour
or two after the presentation.

I've put together a list of reliable sources and will be tweeting a lot of
breaking news on my account, @JonathanMosen. Alternatively, find your
favourite Apple news site and look for a live blog or Twitter feed.

It is a pity there is no live stream.

RE: TV Listings

2013-07-23 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

I have been using Dijit for about 9 months and find it extremely helpful.
My provider is Time Warner and Dijit will list most of the channels. The
only one that it doesn't list that I really wish it would is the Halmark
Movie channel. It does list the Halmark channel, but not the Halmark movie
channel.

the app seems to have potential. A Few times it became a bit sluggish and
I'm not sure if that is because it was loading stuff or for some other

Is there an app that will show you listings of what is on tv now and in the
next few hours for all of the channels, similar to the preview channel on
the tv? If it matters, I have Time Warner cable.

I don't want to have to select each channel seperately and be sent to a
secondary page in order to see what is on that channel. I'd like a list that
shows all channels and what is currently on them and what is upcoming next
hour, etc.

Are you visiting Audible.com on your iPhone or a computer? If a computer,
then which browser and screenreader do you use?

If you go to the site in Safari you are automatically directed to
mobile.audible.com unless you specifically go to the full site.
I just searched for Dan Brown's recently released book Inferno, once the
book came up I didn't see anything that said Play this book. On my iPhone
Voiceover said Listen to an excerpt, image, this was not indicated as
being a link, but a double tap at that point did start playing the sample
and another double tap stopped playback.

On my computer using Internet Explorer 10 and Jaws 14 the Play a Sample is
a flash button and it usually works fine to press enter or the space bar to
play/pause.

Hope this helps,

RE: read2go books gone after restored iphone 4

2013-06-03 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

There may be an easier way, but, you can always use the ReadToGo app and
search for the books that you want to have back on your phone. You would
then re-download them. You don't need to do this outside the ReadToGo app.
Unlike Kindle or audible, where you have to go to either of those web sites
to search for and purchase the book, or even choose a Kindle free
sample,ReadToGo can search directly in Bookshare and you will have the
opportunity to download them right from ReadToGo.

Advice, consolations all welcome!
