How many of you that are suggesting BlindSquare have actually tried
it in the way that the OP wants to use it? E.G. GPS indoors?
In my experience, regardless of the app, GPS indoors simply isn't
worth bothering with unless you're in a very large area like a
shopping centre or an airport. I suggest that instead of trying (and
most likely failing) to find an app, you spend time getting to grips
with your new complex instead. After all, do you really want to be
dependant on an electronic device to guide you around what is
 essentially your home?

 Hello all
I am finally getting ready to enter the new world of advanced technology, as
best it suits us as visually impaired individuals.
According to my sister who has an old I Phone 4s, the I Phone
is the only phone to consider in terms of voice over and accessibility. She
loves hers and has had no trouble with the apps she uses. However, reading
posts in the last day since I’ve joined is a bit alarming.
I don’t know if one of the issues with an update that renders
Safari troublesome is something quirky that occurred with a recent update or
has to do with Safari and voice over as it’s existed for awhile now.
What I will need in a smart phone are features that allow me to do everything
possible with just a tap or swipe. I do not want to type numbers or letters.
In addition to being totally blind, my fingers are often numb to the point
that I cannot identify clothing, numbers on a phone pad, etc. I can move my
fingers I just can’t identify things easily when they are numb. If I have to
type on the surface of the phone and search out letters, I will likely be
doing myself no more good than if I were typing.

I need to keep an appointment calendar. I need to keep records and set memos
 and reminders.
I need to be able to do E Mail by listening to incoming posts
and by dictating outgoing posts. I’m not interested in texting. Currently I
use Outlook on a desktop PC.
I need to do Internet searches, read PDf files, shop, log
onto Face Book, download Bookshare, NLS, Blind Mice movies, Newsline
magazines and Newspapers. I might want to check out offerings on Hulu.
I’d like to be able to easily access audio only
archives of various podcasts of political radio personalities.
Skype works well I hear and some camera features work extremely well on the I
 Phone with voice over.

I was working on a novel this summer and had to stop because
typing was aggravating the carpal tunnel. I understand that a dictation
program akin to or by the same people who designed Dragon is part of the I
Phone. Does it work for more lengthy word processing?
Beyond that depending on whether or not I buy something
through a company like Verizon as opposed to buying minutes I would want to
 use GPS.
I don’t have any help here from anyone that is using features
specifically useful for a blind individual. My tolerance for fumbling, lags
in information coming up, buggy software is very very low. I’m certainly
capable of learning if given proper instruction and by that I mean in person
instruction by a savvy user. I doubt I’d have the patience to teach myself
using a reading a manual or help files type approach. Just being honest here!
I don’t have a lot of hope that anyone from the Verizon store will know what
I need to know in terms of the voice over features.
I hope to find someone in my area who is using their phone
well and can demo for me.
I hope many of you here will tell me to go for it.

to uncompress it and if you then want to save it as another MP3 file, it

 Hi Donald,

You might want to give Dropvox a try. Note it is Dropvox with a v as in
victor. This is a super simple voice recorder which is made to work with
Dropbox as in the cloud storage service. Of course you do need a Dropbox
account and Dropbox installed on your phone to use it, but if you do anyways
it works great. You can create a folder on your computer in the Dropbox
folder and call it Voice Recordings or something like that. Then in the
Dropvox app go into Settings, link Dropvox to your Dropbox account and
select that folder. Then any recording you do will automatically be uploaded
to your Dropbox and, of course, it will also download to any computer you
have automatically and it is in MP3 format. You can also set it to only
upload on WiFi if you don't want to use data, then the file will be saved on
your phone until you get home and are back on WiFi at which time it will
 automatically get uploaded.
Once everything is set up, you can even set Dropvox to record automatically
and immediately upon opening the app. If not all you have is a button to get
to Settings and a very big Record button. It also works fine with Voiceover
on the external speaker, yes, you will hear anything you do with Voiceover
in the recording, but if that doesn't bother you then it's not a problem. If
you didn't want this, you could always mute Voiceover with a 3-finger double
tap. If you set Dropvox to record when it opens, you can either place focus
on it, then mute Voiceover and then double tap or you can mute Voiceover and
use SIRI and tell it to Open Dropvox. Of course if you manually start
recording, you can also mute Voiceover when you are in the app as it is easy
to tap the Record and Pause buttons without Voiceover giving you feedback.

Here is the App Store link, the app is $1.99 and fully voiceover accessible
which is even stated in the app description:

 https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/dropvox-record-voice-memos/id416288287?mt=8

I'm wanting people's thoughts about a basic audio recorder. I'll be using
the internal mike. Mono is fine. Format is not critical although I would
prefer something which could do both .wav and .mp3. Two things are
particularly important. First a recorder which can be easily activated, and
second, one which can run continuously for perhaps 20 minutes.

Am I correct in assuming that regardless of which recorder I use, I must use
an external headphone so as to hear voice over? It sticks in my mind that
one recorder I tested either muted voice over or severely reduced its
volume. I don't mind if I hear voice over during the first few seconds of
recording as I plan to mute voice over with a three finger double tap until
I am ready to conclude recording. In other words, I won't be starting,
 stopping and then restarting.

 Thanks for suggestions.

coming up. BlindSquare has some more options, but nowadays I find myself
 just using Maps.

Carrying it in your pocket should work fine.

No, you don’t need to install anything else. It can be helpful to install
4Square, if you want to check into locations, or create custom points of
 interest, but it’s not necessary.

 Hi all,

I am considering getting Blind Square so read through the frequently asked

 Blind Square.

 1) The FAQs state that Blind Square does NOT offer turn by turn
directions. Does this mean that wen walking, it will not tell me to turn
right at the next intersection? This seems odd

 2) FAQ says that if you carry your device in a vertical position to make
sure the back of it points in your travelling direction. I carry my phone
in a front pants pocket. Will this be a problem?

 3) Do you need to install any other GPS apps in order for Blind Square to
work well? I’ve seen references to Four Square, Googlemaps Open Street
Maps but am confused as to whether you have to have these apps in order for
 Blind Square to work.

 4) Lastly, what is the price? I could not find this on the web site.

Thanks in advance for any info,
 Sherry Wells

work rather well on the Apple TV so if you have one of these you can access
it that way and since an Apple TV is usually connected to a TV or home
theatre system it is a better way to listen to a movie anyways. I am not
quite sure what you mean by will I need more memory to use on the phone,
Netflix and to my knowledge Hulu are streaming services and don't allow for
any downloads which means you can use them even on an 8 Gb iPod Touch Third

 Hi,
with all due respect I beg to differ with the statements that the app is
nearly unusable and that voiceover doesn’t work in the player. I’ve used it
for hours on end this week. While it’s true that not all buttons are labeled
and there’s definitely room for improvement by no means did I find it
 unusable at all.
I think it’s always best to give an app such as this a play for one’s self as
one person’s inaccessible is another’s a bit quirky needing improvement but
 definitely workable.
Just my two cents no one asked for.

Hi Jim. Personally, I wouldn't listen to Sirius XM on an iPhone because
of several reasons. Firstly, as others have said, the app is almost
unusable. Sure, you can navigate to a station, but when you're in the
player, Voiceover doesn't work. Secondly, I certainly wouldn't
unsubscribe your radio receiver because if you want to listen to it
longer than 90 minutes, you'll need to be constantly at your iPhone to
start it up again because it times out every 90 minutes. That was my
biggest turn-off with the app and I like to sleep with the radio on and
when I had the app, it would always kick me off after 90 minutes. So
yeah, you're better off with your radio receiver.

 how you all handled it.
I am noticing with some apps that when trying to read through items

on the item which brings up the full story Voiceover will read the
story but it won't read the headline from the main screen.
How do you all handle this? What do you do about this? Just double tap
on every single headline/story to see what it is?
Why does voiceover do this? Are the story/headline titles displayed as
 an image or something?
I noticed this occuring on the TMZ app. I was trying to scroll through
the celebrity/entertainment stories and it did this.
I also noticed voiceover also used to do this in the Scorecenter app
when scrolling through the sports headlines.
However, the scorecenter app now seems to be accessible.

 Thanks!
