Hey Mich. If you can swing it and are interested in lidar, the 13 pro is an
excellent choice. I bought the 250 gig back in May and love it. The battery is
excellent.

Hi all. I would like the lists thoughts. I am running a I phone 8 with 64 bit
running ios15.5 and am able to upgrade it. I am trying to find out what I
should upgrade it to. I am blind and am a exclusive voice over user. I have

phone 13 I phone 13 max and others like the I phone SE3. some things I am
thinking about are battery life and storage space. As some one who is blind I
don’t really cair that mutch about the camra since I use it some times to take
picks but not that offen. I would like to know what the lists thoughts on what
I should upgrade it to as some one who uses voice over only and the camra and
other things not that mutch. Many thanks. From Mich Verrier from New Liskeard

What do you
want to know? If you’re totally blind, you obviously won’t see who’s there but
you can talk to them and it will be like a phone call. The person at your door
can’t see you. You can also send the video to anybody you’d like so if you
don’t know where a package is at your door, you can send the video to someone
who doesn’t have ring and they can play it. I’ve sent some cute videos of my
kids to Grandma that way and once when we had a package dropped off I sent the
video to my dad and asked him to take a look, my husband was busy, my dad
wasn’t and I wanted the package in before it started raining.

Hi,

Yes you can use the app to speak to someone outside though sometimes it takes a
few more seconds than I'd like to open the app and get to the right button. But
I also wanted to mention that if you had an Amazon Echo you can use newer
models to say wake word answer front door or wherever you have your bell set up
and speak through it as well. Some find this method quicker if at home. When
done you can say wake word end call and there you are.

I hope that helps.

Take good care.

Robin

My neighbor put the lanyard on for me. I'm sorry, but I don't know how he did

I really like my Hable One. I'm almost tempted to get an orbit writer just to
compare the 2 braille bluetooth keyboards. However, if I get an orbit writer
and don't like it I don't want to have spent $100 and not be able to get my
money back. I also have my input set to contracted braille and words for my

Does the ring Doorbell app allow you to speak to the person outside the door so
that you can find out who it is before you open the door? Just wanted to make

Thanks very much.

RE: light detector

2022-03-17 Thread terrieter
Hi Janet,
Seeing AI has a Light Detector item in its menu and it works well. You flick
right till you are on the menu and then flick up through menu options till you
come to the light detector. Sorry the Light detector app isn't working. I have
used it a few days ago and it still worked for me. I'll have to try it now and
see what it is doing or not doing.
Best,

RE: best map app for announcing street intersections

2022-03-13 Thread terrieter
Hi Mark,
Do you use these three apps all at the same time or do you choose the one that
works best in a given area?
Thanks much.

As for me, I use Good Maps Outdoors, Nearby Explorer, and Lazarillo GPS. Each
app works differently in various areas. Between them, however, I get the info
that I need.

Unfortunately I have not found anything that is even close to being as good as
nearby explorer and that app is no longer in development, really sad since I
think that was by far the best GPS app for blind people.

Nearby Explorer

2022-03-12 Thread terrieter
Dear Julian,
It is working! I have installed Nearby Explorer and the map download is 80%
complete. Thank you so much for responding to my email. I know a number of
people as well as me who will be delighted. I can't thank you enough! My
national maps just downloaded and now Kentucky is 100% downloaded and the map
download is complete. You are my Nearby Explorer hero. Thank you again. This
will make a huge difference in my life.
Warm regards,

As far as I understand, if you had purchased Nearby Explorer, you should still
be able to download it to your phone even though it isn't currently offered in
the App Store. You have to go into your account in the App Store and look under
the purchased tab and you should see it there and it should offer you the
ability to re-download it. I agree 100% that nearby explorer is the best GPS
app out there and I will keep using it as long as it works. Hope that helps.

Mark, I totally agree with you. One of the saddest mistakes I ever made was
uninstalling Nearby Explorer from my iPhone. GoodMaps sometimes gives street
names and sometimes not and also is selective about announcing POIs. Sometimes
it does and sometimes it doesn't for no reason that I can figure.

I wonder how you could limit the jumping between the little toe?

Or could it be you have to tape or glue the phone to the sole of your shoe for
it to count the number of steps your taking?

LOL.

It should only count steps when typing if you put your phone on the floor and
jump from letter to letter. Of course you'd have to do the ballet thing where
you are on your tippy toes otherwise it won't work 藍

To test what the articles I’ve read are saying; check your step count, then
walk a known path so you know how far you have walked. Check the pedometer
reading.

Later, see if you can take a ride in a vehicle on something very close to that
same path and check the readings before and after.

My thought is, if it is truly measuring steps, it should not give you much
after riding in a vehicle.

Besides, the keyboard business would only possibly be if one had an apple
watch; but I doubt very much that would register typing unless you are a very
dramatic typist, .

If the phone is in a pocket, I could see tapping one’s foot registering as
steps.

That happens with some cheap standard pedometers you hang on a belt.

They also register riding in cars because the least vibration causes them to
think you are walking…

Hi. I have used Pedometer ++ on the original iPhone SE and now on the 12 Pro
and I haven't noticed foot tapping or keyboard use adding to step count. I've
experimented with this before and the only times steps register is when the
phone is in a pocket or on the waste area, like it would be in a holster or in
a fanny pack. I can't speak about the native pedometer because I've never used
it, but the Pedometer ++ app is accessible and has worked well for me.

No you shouldn't have to update your phone. I have an iPhone that is still
running IOS 12 and the smart cooker app showed up on it. It would not update
because the phone needed 13 or higher, but it was there. I'd wait to see if
the app update shows up in a couple of days because sometimes update aren't
rolled out the same day all over the country.

I still have the old app but I don't see any update for it. I didn't update my

RE: Blind Compass and Blind Bat - new apps for the blind

Subject: Blind Compass and Blind Bat - new apps for the blind

Blind Compass and Blind Bat - new apps for the blind Hello, My name is Tony
and I wrote two iPhone apps for blind people and recently I published them in
AppStore.
Blind Compass is a compass app specifically designed for blind people. I was
surprised that such an app didn't seem to exist before - or am I missing
something? First, it reports your heading continuously by varying pitch, so
that even with not much musical training you can easily memorize how the right
direction sounds like, and you'll be able to walk in straight line just by
listening to your direction. ALso when your heading crosses North,East, South,
or West you will hear that spoken to you.
I recommend to use Blind Compass with bone conductance bluetooth headphones.
Bone conductance headphones don't block ears, so that you can hear sounds from
the environment, as well as audio feedback from BlindCompasss.
You can also have your heading spoken by either pressing button in the app, or
if you are using bluetooth headphones, you can press play button once.
Second, Blind Compass allows you to lock your direction. Either press lock
button in the app, or press fast forward button on your headphones, or double
press play button on your headphones, and your direction will be locked. You
will hear auditory feedback guiding you back to the original heading. If you
allow Blind Compass to use location data, then it will also count distance
travelled from the point where you locked your location. This way you can cross
vast open space without fear of veering.

Another app I wrote is Blind Bat - and it is designed to help people to learn
echolocation. Maybe I'm not that good at it myself, but I wanted to play around
with it, so I designed an app that would make ideal click, whatever that might
entail. You have a few parameters you can adjust and the app would generate
click sound that conforms to these parameters. You can specify mean frequency,
bandwidth and duration of click.

If anyone is interested in source code:

Let me know what you think of them!

Accessible Bluetooth Accurate Scale

2021-01-06 Thread terrieter
Hello everyone,

I am looking for an accurate Bluetooth scale with an accessible app for the
iPhone. I only care about my weight. I don't need body composition or other
information. But I do want a scale that can be accurate within 2 tenths of a
pound. Is anyone using a scale with these features? If so, and if you like
the scale, could you send me the name and any other info I would need to
order it on line? I would appreciate this very very much.

Good wishes,

RE: Does anyone use the Apple battery case?

2020-11-10 Thread terrieter
Hi Dennis and everyone,

Below is what I bought from Amazon. I do sometimes get the message “This
accessory may not be supported by this device.” However, when I then unplug the
cable and plug it in again, I usually don’t get that message again. Another
beware message: I have read that you are supposed to charge the battery cases
and the phone separately to prevent overheating. I have not done this and
perhaps this is why I have had the problems I had with the Apple chargers.

However, here is what I bought from Amazon:

QTshine Battery Case for iPhone 6/6s/7/8, Upgraded [6000mAh] Protective
Portable Charging Case Rechargeable Extended Battery Pack for Apple iPhone
6/6s/7/8Sold by:

QTshineDirect$25.95

I don’t see the direct link to this product in my orders list, but if you
search for the name, it should be there.

Hope this helps.

I love the Apple battery cases, but I have had problems with the case for the
iPhone 7. This is the case the Apple store sold me to be used with the iPhone
8, as they are the same size. My first case lasted nine months and then started
to charge very sporadically. The cable would charge the phone by itself, but
not the case whether the phone was in it or not. So I went through the
replacement process as this was still under warranty. I got a replacement, same
model of case. My replacement lasted 3 months and then started to have the same
charging problems as the first case. I made arrangements to send it back and
get a new one as it was still under warranty. But then I charged the case for
about 16 hours and it worked, so I canceled the return. then it stopped
charging, just like the first case. Again, the cable worked with the phone by
itself, so the problem was not the charging cable. I then gave up as I was
pretty sure I had passed the warranty time.

So, speaking for the iPhone 7 Apple battery case, I love it but I don’t trust
its reliability. I hope the cases for other models do not have this problem.
Right now, I am using a cheap battery case and it is currently working.

Hope this is useful.

aHi Kimberly,

I’ve used the Apple Smart Battery Case for years and I swear by it. Yes, it
does add considerable heft to the phone, and, because I often carry my phone in
my pants pocket along with keys, a nail clipper and assorted change from time
to time, the satiny rubber covering can get kinda thrashed, but the case works
like a champ. If I drop the phone it will usually land on its back because of
the way the battery’s situated, so the case offers some good protection. Even
the beveled edge of the case which is about 1/16 inch above the phone’s front
face will keep the front glass from taking a direct hit. When you use the case,
the battery in the case is discharged first, then the phone’s battery is
engaged.

My first battery case was a Mophie Juice Pack which worked well but was
considerably bulkier than the Apple case. I liked the Apple’s form factor
better so I switched.

Hope this helps.

Tom

RE: Any recommendation about gps for iPhone?

2020-09-25 Thread terrieter
GoodMaps Explorer does do outdoors. I just installed it and looked at POIs from
inside my bedroom. It seemed accurate about what I know is around me. I like
its tabs at the bottom of the screen; they make sense to me. It is a free
download. Not sure if its maps are on line or are part of the download, though
the download was fast so I conjecture that maps are online and not downloaded.

Will share more after I have used it outside.

A caviat about indoor maps for this application: someone has to map a space by
walking around it with a backpack of equipment. I saw two places that had
indoor maps within five miles of me: American Printing House for the Blind and
the McDowell Rehabilitation Center, the state rehab facility for persons with
visual impairments. Although the maps do not rely on installation of beacons or
other hardware that must be maintained and powered , they do require someone
with requisite equipment to walk around the space on all floors and then there
are three more steps in making the maps. It is a good idea, but indoor mapping
may be limited by how many facilities want to pay to be mapped and how many
backpacks of equipment are floating around the country to be used to get the
first level of map data.

On the plus side, this company is offering other applications of this
technology, e.g., first responders. I would think such data could also be
useful in coal mines when miners need to get out fast and can’t see because of
smoke from a fire. Many facilities might be inclined to pay for initial map
making for use in emergencies. This data would also make indoor maps for
GoodMaps Explore.

Best,

Terrie Terlau

Christine,In my opinion, Apple Maps is harder to use with VoiceOver, though it
can somehow be set to give more street information.Good Maps Explore or Nearby
Explorer online, are the best two free apps that will combine turn-by-turn
directions with providing the street information Be aware that Points of
Interest are only as accurate as the digital map data, and depending on the
source, it can be several years out off date.

Yes.

If you just want turn-by-turn directions either walking or driving, Google Maps
is very good.

If you want something that will tell you about the streets you are crossing,
and points of interest nearby, Lazarillo is very good and free.

It can also give you walking turn-by-turn directions within the app, or can
launch Google Maps and it will still give you information about the streets.

I find the Points of Interest a little too distracting, so I turn off the
explore mode which is on by default when you launch Lazarillo. It is a button
at the top of the screen so easy to get to and turn off.

Definitely not the time to share an under-the-tongue thermometer these days if
multiple people in your household are using it. I guess you could disinfect it
each time somebody used it, but the contactless thermometers are definitely a
better option right now and probably even if there weren’t a COVID-19 virus,
after all, if you think you have a fever you probably want to avoid giving

connection was easy and quick and after signing in to the app with my user name
and password my wife’s and my own profiles showed up and I could still see the
measurements I took back in 2017.

The Thermo also has a display where a sighted person can instantly read the
result, otherwise you can get the result inside the app about 15 or so seconds
after the reading is complete.

There is one single button. You press it once and the thermometer makes a small
vibration which means it’s ready. You have to be a little bit quick and have it
ready pointing to the middle of your forehead about half an inch or so away
from your skin since the measuring starts right away after the vibration and
only lasts for about 4 or 5 seconds.

It reads the temperature contactless, as soon as it vibrates you smoothly move
it from the middle of your forehead to your temple and stop there, the Thermo
will vibrate twice to indicate it has finished the reading.

After you do this a few times you quickly get the hang of how fast you have to
move it across your forehead so you get to your temple just before the second
double vibration.

Even if you take a reading without the Thermo app open you soon get a
notification that a new temperature reading is available, if you double tap on
that notification the app opens and shows the profiles you have set up.

In our case it shows “Me” which is me and it shows “Jackie” which is my wife.

Below are links, first to the Withings website directly, then to the Canadian
Apple, Amazon and Best Buy, after that the US Apple Store, Amazon, Best Buy and
Walmart. Finally I put the links for the Thermo app on both the Canadian and US
App Stores. The only problem is that it seems you are not going to be able to
find one since they show as sold out everywhere or, in the case of Amazon, as
“currently unavailable”, I guess that is probably a result of COVID-19.

I haven’t checked, but that may very well be the case for the Kinsa thermometer
as well.

The Thermo, by the way, connects via WiFi, not Bluetooth. we have had ours for
probably 3 years or a bit longer and I hadn’t used it until recently for about
2 years because just before Christmas 2017 was the only and last time I was
sick with the flu and a fever in probably 10 years.

I did use it a bit more often recently just checking myself since I do have a
retail store and am out in public every day. I realized I hadn’t even connected
it yet to my iPhone 8 which I got a year and a half ago, but as before the
connection was easy and quick and after signing in to the app with my user name
and password my wife’s and my own profiles showed up and I could still see the
measurements I took back in 2017.

Above that it then shows an unassigned reading, if you double tap on that
Voiceover reads out the date, time and the temperature and you can then double
tap on whichever profile you want to assign that reading to. It’s very
accessible, very simple and reliable.

After you are done you just put on the soft silicon cover and the Thermo will
turn itself off, if you want to take a second reading you just press the button
again and repeat. You can take 2 or 3 readings one after another and if you do
this you’ll see in the app that it will say that there are 2, 3 or however many
readings you took which are unassigned, you can tap on each one and assign it
or if they are all from yourself you can tap
