RE: Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

I suppose it varies from person to person, but have any of you mini users use
Braille Screen Input? I like the idea of a small phone but wonder if (1) BSI is
harder and (2) how is the audio? Is the speaker also smaller?

I keep hearing that the 13 mini will be the last mini; wondering if this is
official or a rumour.

As to battery: I get a day out of mine, often a bit more but of course it does
depend on what I’m doing. It’s good enough for my needs.

All the best

Several questions about Fantastical

2021-06-27 Thread therealsandyfinley
I have been curious about this app for a long time so decided to try it. I
have a lot of questions, some of which are below. If your answers are brief
you may be ok writing them. If they are more complex, perhaps you would
prefer a phone call? That will be up to you.

Questions

1. What is the point of the day ticker? I thought it was to go from one
appointment to another, maintaining a list of appointments more
consistently than does the Apple calendar. Having played with it, I am not
so sure.

2. I like the way one can move between "day ticker" and "tasks" with
one flick up or down. Once I enter 2 or 3 tasks, they seem to be scattered
on the screen in a random fashion. What am I missing? Is there a way to
organize tasks?

3. When I click on "Menu," I get two headings called Calendar and
Full Screen. Calendar includes three buttons called Tasks, Day Ticker And
calendar; full screen has four buttons called day, week, month, and year.
When I click on the first heading's buttons I have no problem, but when I
click on the 4 buttons under Fuull Screen, I get a message that says I
click on the buttons under I click get a message that these features are
available only with Premium. But I have premium.

4.

In the calendar there is a choice on the top left that says "go to today."
Then it says "tap and hold

Is this usable with Voice Over?

Hi Tony,
I think you are marvelously creative and very intuitive to think of these apps.
I love the idea of using your compass app to walk a straight line across a very
wide open area. This is brilliant. Thank you so much for your work!

Blind Compass and Blind Bat - new apps for the blind Hello, My name is Tony
and I wrote two iPhone apps for blind people and recently I published them in
AppStore.
Blind Compass is a compass app specifically designed for blind people. I was
surprised that such an app didn't seem to exist before - or am I missing
something? First, it reports your heading continuously by varying pitch, so
that even with not much musical training you can easily memorize how the right
direction sounds like, and you'll be able to walk in straight line just by
listening to your direction. ALso when your heading crosses North,East, South,
or West you will hear that spoken to you.
I recommend to use Blind Compass with bone conductance bluetooth headphones.
Bone conductance headphones don't block ears, so that you can hear sounds from
the environment, as well as audio feedback from BlindCompasss.
You can also have your heading spoken by either pressing button in the app, or
if you are using bluetooth headphones, you can press play button once.
Second, Blind Compass allows you to lock your direction. Either press lock
button in the app, or press fast forward button on your headphones, or double
press play button on your headphones, and your direction will be locked. You
will hear auditory feedback guiding you back to the original heading. If you
allow Blind Compass to use location data, then it will also count distance
travelled from the point where you locked your location. This way you can cross
vast open space without fear of veering.

Another app I wrote is Blind Bat - and it is designed to help people to learn
echolocation. Maybe I'm not that good at it myself, but I wanted to play around
with it, so I designed an app that would make ideal click, whatever that might
entail. You have a few parameters you can adjust and the app would generate
click sound that conforms to these parameters. You can specify mean frequency,
bandwidth and duration of click.

I think it is easier to walk straight when walking faster; the straight line is
easier to feel. Trouble is, if you crash into something, it hurts more.

RE: Orbit Writer Review

2020-08-22 Thread therealsandyfinley
Mickey, I have my writer set to echo words most of the time. But in the rotor
settings on my iPhone, I have “characters” right next to “words” so, if I am
editing something prior to sending it, I can easily flip back and forth between
“words” and “characters” with space plus dots 2 3 and space dots 5 6. Of
course, this applies only to the phone. HTH

After a couple of days with the Writer following the firmware update on August

device. So long as you remember to have the iPhone or iPad locked when you turn
on the writer, it has no trouble reconnecting to whatever devices it had been
paired with.

I am only going to address the Bluetooth with Apple devices as the USB
connection to a computer has a little way to go.

With keyboard echo set to characters, I am having no trouble at all writing and
editing with the Writer.

I am finding responsiveness of the keyboard to be excellent. At least with iOS
14 public beta 4. all of the braille commands work very well.

The Command, Shift, d to send an email, for example.

If you press space+dot7,1, then immediately press space+dot7,4 then quickly
press the letter d, an email will be sent.

I sometimes have to do that twice, but I think that is because I was not quite
fast enough.

Navigating with the rotor works as expected.

this is much better for me than doing the on-screen braille.

The Writer is so small and light I am taking it everywhere with me.

Just my experience, but I hope others are finding the same.

RE: Creating Events Quickly in iOS Calendar

2020-08-13 Thread therealsandyfinley
Reggie, I just made an appointment for myself like this:
Me:
"Make an appointment for September 27 called Dinner with Carol."
SIRI: "What time?"
Me: "5 pm."\\
SIRI: "what is the location?"
Me: "My house."

"Carol Baker or Carol Davis?"

I did not deliberately leave the time out; I just forgot and I wanted to show
you that SIRI will ask. And at the time I forgot that there are two Carols in
my address book.
|

I get a notifications about all of my appointments; those are, I think,
different from using the reminder app, which I never do.

Tracy, I just tried pairing this PC to the OW, butt to no avail. I am not ready
to give up on this machine, but it needs some improvement,.

Sandy, are you successful pairing then reconnecting more than one device?

My initial few thoughts on this experience are I loved the price point of the
Braille Writer. I like using the center joystick to interact with my phone. The
braille input though, isn’t thrilling me, and I am learning how much I liked
the reading side of a braille display. I didn’t realize that.

Joshua, I just got mine yesterday. I think what we are experiencing here are
the consequences of being early adopters. To me, the proof of Orbit Research’s
quality is not that their product needs tweaking; it is whether they listen to
our feedback. Let’s hang in there and help each other out.

Unfortunately, no braille or audio quick start guide with the unit.

Tracy, sorry for the delay; we were traveling today and just got where we are
going. I tried to connect to this lap top and was unable to do so, but perhaps
I did It wrong. I will try again.

I like the form factor of the writer but I find the input problematic; most
of us who have been lifelong users of braille can out type it. I think everyone
needs to give Orbit constructive feedback; perhaps some of these problems can
be fixed.

Janet, the Orbit Writer is a Bluetooth keyboard with Perkins-style keys. It is
about the size of an iPhone and is meant to make typing on the phone easier.
And your question is not stupid.
