I know I'm in the minority here, but it would sure be nice if NLS
would offer support for braille displays to read their DAISY
 content.
Much of the audio only content they produce is not available via
 Web
Braille, and not everyone has the luxery of enjoying audio books.
 But

I did see the merging of BARD and WebBraille as a step toward using an app to
access one central site for books. So we shall see. :)

Re: Books and Nls service

2013-01-07 Thread Cheryl Homiak
It isn't a matter of providing support for their braille displays to read the
daisy content as I understand it. NLS does not include the text in their books
from what I've been told; CNIB does. In other words, with out without a braille
display, you can't access a text representation of the daisy book from NLS,
only the audio. So I believe it would involve changing their whole method of
production rather than just adding braille support but I agree that it would
allow people with braille displays to choose how they want to read and would
allow people who are both deaf and blind to read a much wider variety of
content. How difficult it would be for them to do this I honestly don't know.

Re: Books and Nls service

2013-01-07 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Cheryl.
You're correct in that this is not a braille specific issue, rather,
one of NLS not making a textual representation available of the audio.
There are certainly many advantages to synchronizing text with audio,
or simply having a textual representation of the material available to
those who want it. This is actually not even limited to users of
braille displays. If NLS were to make the content available in a
textual form, this would also provide better access to those with low
vision. NLS was made aware of the potential before the Digital Talking
Book Program was rolled out, they just didn't think it was worth their
while to investigate it further. And if they do not wish to take the
extra time to redo the DAISY pipeline of their audio only content, I
can understand that, but they should then at least offer a text only
version of the DAISY content available for patrons who cannot access
the audio, or who wish to access the content in an alternative format.
I really don’t understand the copyright restrictions issue they have
talked about previously, since Bookshare and Learning Allie who abide
by the same copyright laws as NLS offer text versions of their
materials. I’d even just say to the people who cannot access the audio
to just go with Bookshare, but Bookshare costs money. So basically
what it boils down to at this point is that people who are deaf-blind
are being forced to pay for access to something that hearing blind
people are not.

Re: Books and Nls service

2013-01-07 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, all you say is true and also not everything on NLS is available in
Bookshare. Plus I've had some Bookshare books with serious problems in their
ocr though many of them are fine. When the NLs program was first discussed, it
was my impression that we would have text access also but that didn't happen. I
very much appreciate and enjoy the NLS program, but I was a little jealous when
I heard a Victor Stratus demonstration using a CNIB book with synchronized text
and audio. But I suppose this really is offtopic so I'll quit here for now.

It isn't a matter of providing support for their braille displays to read
the daisy content as I understand it. NLS does not include the text in their
books from what I've been told; CNIB does. In other words, with out without
a braille display, you can't access a text representation of the daisy book
from NLS, only the audio. So I believe it would involve changing their whole
method of production rather than just adding braille support but I agree
that it would allow people with braille displays to choose how they want to
read and would allow people who are both deaf and blind to read a much wider
variety of content. How difficult it would be for them to do this I honestly
 don't know.

Hi,
I'd definitely like to see Braille support for all NLS content, and, as an

RE: Books and Nls service

2013-01-06 Thread Richard Turner
HI,
For whatever reason, Learning Ally chose to set it up so you can't search
for the books from within the app and down load them directly.
Perhaps you could contact Learning Ally's customer service and request that
they change this approach.

Hi Teresa,

I have a question. The other day I opened the LearnAlly app on the phone.
With Learning Ally, one pays a subscription like Bookshare. In the Read@Go
app, one can search and download periodicals and books. Why can't one do it
in the Learning Ally app. It's running on the same principle. I understand
that one needs to purchase the books or magazines from the 3rth party and
then sync it to the phone, but in the case of Learning Ally, I don't think
it should be this way. HTH.

Yes, it is odd, but that is the way Learning Ally designed their process.
I think they have become more responsive to their customer base in the last
couple of years, so if enough people contact them and request that they
adjust that, perhaps it will be changed.

You have to have a Google a count. To search for books, you have to go to the
Google Store site. This is the case with all third-party apps that require you

RE: Books and Nls service

2013-01-05 Thread Eileen Misrahi

HTH.

Hi.
I use iBooks, since I don't feel like having to create an account on
the Barnes and Noble website, then purchase the content through the
other store and then load Nook on my iPhone to read the content. I use
iBooks where ever posible. There is always that new app called Voice
Dream Reader with the $1 upgrade that provides access to Bookshare
books if you're a subscriber, but I have yet to try it. Or if you want
to pay the $20, you can get read2go, which is Bookshare's app. At this
time, there is no NLS app for iOS.

Likely issue will be that IOS controls the speed playback.
I.e 1.5 x and 2x which sounds choppy to me.
2x on the Stream sounds wonderful and I often listen at faster rates then that.
So, I am bracing myself for this likely problem.

 Hi All,
I just downloaded iBooks and Nook for my iPhone, and was thinking about
looking into using Nls as some books I wanna read are in paperback. Do yall
use one of these apps more than the other, including Nls, or all together?
There isn't an Nls app is there?
If anyone has any info on Nls please tell me a lil bout it and how the
book selection is, and how itvworks.
If you'd like to mail me off-list feel free as I don't wanna clutter the
lists up, but figured this would be a nice place to start.
 Thanks.
