Hi

In the March edition of APH newsletter the Orbit Reader 20 should be
available for purchase again sometime this summer. Unfortunately APH is
the only place to purchase the Orbit Reader 20.

There is another low cost braille display that you can research for
information; the Braille Me. I think the price for the Braille me is
$450.

It’s my understanding now that APH isn’t shipping orbits until the

Hello folks,
I wonder if any of you have acquired and used the orbit braille reader or
braille me and used them with iOS devices.
I read the description of both on their respective websites, but very
interesting to hear the views of people who have actually have hand on
experience with these devices. I know that the orbit reader is already
out of stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also know that the major
differences are first the orbit uses the eight braille dots while the

they sound similar.
Any input on this topic will be extremely appreciated. I am not sure if

braille me.

Cheers,

Hello,

What I find interesting is why neither of these two manufacturers chose not
to include both routing keys and 8-dot Braille cells in their products. For
my money, both of these two features are integral to a full functioning
Braille display.

Some things in life, truly confound me.

Certainly they must have done some surveys or see the need for both of these
key features.

Chris, I have used braille displays for years and am trying to remember when
I last used dots 7 and 8. I will tell u that those dots are used to show
the cursor. I have also seen times when the full cell is used to show the
cursor. I think the main issue is not in locating the cursor, but routing
it quickly to the area you want to edit. I personally use cursor routing
buttons so much that if I did not have them, I would go nuts!!! It’s just so
efficient to hit the button right where your finger is and have the cursor
come right there.

Off hand, with an 8 dot display, it is very easy to find the cursor. Also,

They made the choice to skip the routing keys because of cost.
One of the APH staff hinted last year that they may be considering a 40 cell
display, but that could have been a vague reference to the Graphity display
that is 40 by 60, a multiline display that will show tactile graphics.
Maybe we will hear more after or during CSUN next week.

Chris, I have used braille displays for years and am trying to remember when I
last used dots 7 and 8. I will tell u that those dots are used to show the
cursor. I have also seen times when the full cell is used to show the cursor.
I think the main issue is not in locating the cursor, but routing it quickly to
the area you want to edit. I personally use cursor routing buttons so much
that if I did not have them, I would go nuts!!! It’s just so efficient to hit
the button right where your finger is and have the cursor come right there.

Off hand, with an 8 dot display, it is very easy to find the cursor. Also, I
believe that computer Braille utilyzes dots 7 and 8.

Hi

In the March edition of APH newsletter the Orbit Reader 20 should be available
for purchase again sometime this summer. Unfortunately APH is the only place to
purchase the Orbit Reader 20.

There is another low cost braille display that you can research for
information; the Braille Me. I think the price for the Braille me is $450.

Donna

It’s my understanding now that APH isn’t shipping orbits until the summer.

I have read this thread with interest because I want to buy another Braille
display; I bought a VarioUltra 20 and I regret that decision, partly because of
its difficulty connecting with iPhone and now the US office is gone. I am
reluctant to consider the BrailleMe because it is not based here and I don’t
want the same experience. Also, I really want more cells, 40 or 32. If an Orbit
20 cann be $500 or less, could a 40 be $900 or so? Does anyone know if Orbit is
considering that option?

Well they could have done so but it would’ve increased the cost what is a
critical feature to one person may not be important to somebody else they made
their decisions to hold down the cost and you can either buy them or not

2018-03-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

What I find interesting is why neither of these two manufacturers chose not to
include both routing keys and 8-dot Braille cells in their products. For my
money, both of these two features are integral to a full functioning Braille
display.

Some things in life, truly confound me.

Certainly they must have done some surveys or see the need for both of these
key features.

Oh well, what is done, is done.

last used dots 7 and 8.

Re: Braille displays: braille me or orbit braille reader?

2018-03-16 Thread Greg Wocher
Hello,
No not almost everyone had units with issues. There was actually only a few of
us that had issues. Most did not. There are units that are over a year old
running fine. I was one who had a defective unit and I have already received my
replacement unit and it is working fine. As for displays with speech, the only
ones I know of are ones like the polaris or b2g units. These range from close
to $3000 to $6000

Does BrailleMe function as a stand-alone notetaker? Orbit reader does.

Hello folks,
I wonder if any of you have acquired and used the orbit braille reader or
braille me and used them with iOS devices.
I read the description of both on their respective websites, but very
interesting to hear the views of people who have actually have hand on
experience with these devices. I know that the orbit reader is already out
of stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also know that the major
differences are first the orbit uses the eight braille dots while the
braille me uses the six dots. The second major difference is that Braille
me has routing buttons while the orbit does not. In other descriptions
they sound similar.
Any input on this topic will be extremely appreciated. I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the

In the March edition of APH newsletter the Orbit Reader 20 should be
available for purchase again sometime this summer. Unfortunately APH is the
only place to purchase the Orbit Reader 20.

There is another low cost braille display that you can research for
information; the Braille Me. I think the price for the Braille me is $450.

It’s my understanding now that APH isn’t shipping orbits until the summer.

Ah, that is a good point. But I thought that it is also easy to find the cursor
with a six braille dots. If I remember from my previous experience with six
braille dots displays, the cursor is usually on the cell where all the six

identifying the capitalized letters and the underlined text. This will be very

Off hand, with an 8 dot display, it is very easy to find the cursor. Also, I
believe that computer Braille utilyzes dots 7 and 8.

I like to hear from those who use braille displays. What are the advantages

it make a huge difference in practical terms?

Hello folks,

I wonder if any of you have acquired and used the orbit braille reader or
braille me and used them with iOS devices.

I read the description of both on their respective websites, but very
interesting to hear the views of people who have actually have hand on
experience with these devices. I know that the orbit reader is already out of
stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also know that the major differences
are first the orbit uses the eight braille dots while the braille me uses the
six dots. The second major difference is that Braille me has routing buttons
while the orbit does not. In other descriptions they sound similar.

Any input on this topic will be extremely appreciated. I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

Cheers,

Hi

In the March edition of APH newsletter the Orbit
Reader 20 should be available for purchase again
sometime this summer. Unfortunately APH is the
only place to purchase the Orbit Reader 20.

There is another low cost braille display that
you can research for information; the Braille
Me. I think the price for the Braille me is $450.

Donna

It’s my understanding now that APH isn’t shipping orbits until the summer.

Hello folks,

I wonder if any of you have acquired and used
the orbit braille reader or braille me and used them with iOS devices.

I read the description of both on their
respective websites, but very interesting to
hear the views of people who have actually have
hand on experience with these devices. I know
that the orbit reader is already out of
stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also
know that the major differences are first the
orbit uses the eight braille dots while the
braille me uses the six dots. The second major
difference is that Braille me has routing
buttons while the orbit does not. In other descriptions they sound similar.

Any input on this topic will be extremely
appreciated. I am not sure if I should wait for
the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the braille me.

Cheers,

Cris

I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

  Cheers,

  Cris

RE: Braille displays: braille me or orbit braille reader?

2018-03-15 Thread llumpkin
It’s my understanding now that APH isn’t shipping orbits until the summer.

Hi Carla,

Where did you order your orbit reader? I have been checking the American
Printing House for the last three weeks, and I continuously find a message on
the website that says: currently out of stock. Is there any other distributer?

Regards,

Cris

If you find the routing buttons helpful I would go ahead and order the Braille
Me. I don't know if they are similar in price. I just ordered the Orbit and
it meets my needs very well. There is a lot I have to learn about it but it
works very well with the iDevices.

Subject: Braille displays: braille me or orbit braille reader?

I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

Cheers,

Cris
