Re: braillepen 12 touch question
Hi Alia, I just asked some questions here about the BraillePen 12 Touch a couple of days ago. I also emailed Larry Lewis, from Flying Blind, whose info has been posted on this group a couple of times. He is very helpful!!! In my email to him, one of the questions that I asked was whether the cursor routing keys over each braille cell on the BraillePen 12 Touch had been made to work in this latest IOS update. Here is the portion of his reply which answers that question. "Thanks for the message. In the interest of transparency, you should know that my company sells a number of Braille displays and we are the US importer for the BraillePen. I’m familiar with all of the portable options. Unfortunately, Apple did not get the Touch Cursor support implemented in the latest iOS release despite the fact that they’ve had a BraillePenTouch for approximately 6 months. They anticipate releasing the cursor routing support in the next release. However, we’re offering customers alternative firmware which allows the BraillePenTouch to emulate another Braille protocol within Voiceover that does provide the touch cursor support, so we do have a workable cursor routing solution in the short-term. This solution does in fact affect the JAWS support within the BraillePenTouch’s initial firmware. Again, this is a work-around that does quite a nice job for iOS users." So, as I understand that reply, Larry's company can help get a BraillePen Touch working by using a short-term work-around, but this work-around may have the potential to affect how things might work with JAWS. That's just my personal interpretation of that response, mind you. I also learned from Larry that his company is selling the BraillePen Touch for $995, which is a great price, as I've seen others selling it for $1099 and up. I hope this helps in some way, as I'm currently doing the same research on braille displays. Amy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. braillepen 12 touch question
am investigating braille displays, and was wondering about the braillepen 12 touch. I think I remember someone saying the routing keys didn't work with voiceover? is this true or is there some work around. RE: BraillePen 12 Touch
Hi all, and thanks for the opinions I've gotten so far. Stacey, thanks for letting me know that the 12 doesn't have any form of routing keys at all. That makes the decision easy. I'll get the BraillePen 12 Touch. Are there any problems that anyone has run into with either the 12, or, if anyone has used it, with the 12 Touch? Thanks all. :-) Amy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Re: BraillePen 12 Touch
Thanks Amy. It's good to know there is a workaround for this. I am very happy with my Braille Penn. I've had it for a couple of years now. You can't beat the price. It's small and portable. I can even carry it in the pocket of my dress slacks. I hasten to add, that you can't put anything else in that pocket grin! RE: BraillePen 12 Touch
Thanks for the reply Brian. I did contact the vendor. They actually say that you can set the BraillePen Touch up as a different braille device and it works. They say that’s a temporary work-around, but that it works for now, and that Apple has had the new BraillePen Touch for 6 months now and the “driver” update should be coming out soon in IOS. I was just wondering whether anyone here had used the Touch, and what the opinions were? If no one has used the touch, what are some opinions on the regular BraillePen 12? BTW, I got the info about installing the BraillePen touch as a different device from Larry Lewis, so you guys can contact him to get further info on that if any of you have a Touch and want to know what device to install it as. You can get his contact info at: www.Flying-Blind.com <http://www.Flying-Blind.com> He was very helpful to me, and he’s who I’ll be buying from if/when I buy. BraillePen 12 Touch
Hi all. Has anyone used the BraillePen 12 Touch, the one with the routing touch areas above each braille cell? I'd like to know whether it is worth buying one to work with my iDevices? Also, I think the answer is no, but just to double-check, does the BraillePen 12, not the new Touch version but the regular version, have cursor buttons above its braille cells, or do you use buttons/joysticks to move the cursor on that model? I'd like to be able to push a button over the braille cell, or, in the case of the BraillePen 12 Touch, touch an area over the braille cell, to place my cursor there.
