Hi Shawn, I have tried it that way in the past and am trying it again. It still occasionally does still drop back into the compact voice for a word which it did in the past. I ran into the same problem myself when I got my first iOS device which was an iPod Touch 4th Generation, but learned that if you have the use pitch change feature on after turning off the compact voice and using the HQ voice, the use pitch change setting if it's turned on will cancel out the setting for compact voice. If you turn off use pitch change, your iPhone will stick to using the HQ voice. You won't really miss the pitch changes, whatever voice you're using in high quality will announce when a capital letter is entered. Hi Nora, The compact voice makes the IOS device a bit more responsive, but one can tell it is a low quality voice which lacks the crisp articulate sound of the normal voice you may have become accustomed to by now. Give it a try, you might find it will be ok for you. Hi Nora, I agree with what Joseph said, the compact voice to me sounds more muffled and, well, not as high quality as the high quality voice. I have not found that my 4S is less responsive using the high quality voice. I have read some posts of people with hearing loss who actually said they can understand the compact voice better. I guess there is no right or wrong here, you just have to decide yourself, in my opinion and for my ears there is no questions that the high quality voice is much better to understand and less annoying to listen to. I would say that the best thing to do is to try it for yourself. I have tried both on and off for an extended period of time to be fair to both. Some folks say with the compact voice off, that their iPhone ran slower. I didn't experience that with my iPhone 4. My problem with compact voice off was the voice would shift between compact voice off and on which I found personally annoying and I didn't think the compact voice off setting was worth it so I turned compact voice back on. Everybody's tasks are different. Try it both ways and see which way you like it. To change between compact voice off and on, do the following. 1 Open settings. 2 Flick with 1 finger right to get to general. 3 Flick right to get to accessibility. 4 open Voice-over. 5 Now flick right to get to the compact voice. This is a toggle. You can toggle compact voice on or off. Judge for yourself which is better suited to your needs. My personal choice is compact voice on. Actually, I've found in just the ways you describe on the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5, but not on the 4. Is the 4 incompatible with the what is, high quality voice--the one that's not compact.? After an upgrade, leave your iDevice plugged in and connected to a wifi network. The high-quality voice will be downloaded while the iDevice is asleep. When the high-quality voice has been downloaded, the use compact voice option will appear in VoiceOver settings.
