RE: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
In one word ... security. Just google the phrase "ios verses android" and read some of the top articles which discuss how much of the extant malware (over 70b percent if I recall) exists for Android phones. Then, read articles on how much more it costs any app developer to produce the same app for Android phones (over 35% if I recall), and so how often app developers decide not to develop for Android due to this (along with their claims that it's very easy to pirate software on Android phones, so people do much more often, so developers are losing sales). These are the conclusions of those who are in this field, not my own, but there's no way I'd own an Android phone if I could at all avoid it. RE: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
Hi, Yes, I'm pretty sure, or at least the last time I checked, most android is still stuck on kitkat. As there are so many android devices, and yet there are more of them than apple devices, they run a range of software. It all depends on the manufacturer. PS. My iPad is still proudly sitting on IOS9.3.5, by choice. - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel No, not all iPhones are running the same version of iOS, but it is a fact that almost 80% of all iOS devices were running iOS 10 approx. 5 months after its release and if you take iOS 9 and iOS 10 together 95% of all iOS devices run those two latest versions with only 5% running earlier versions. Android doesn’t even get close to these numbers, it is just the nature of the beast and one example where Apple’s control over hardware, software and the eco system is a good thing. Apple also told the large carriers right from day one that Apple will be in charge of pushing out updates whereas many carriers are responsible to do this for Android devices. Here an article putting this into perspective: iOS 10 Now Installed on Nearly 80% of Active iOS Devices Wednesday February 22, 2017 6:18 am PST by Joe Rossignol Just over five months after iOS 10 was released to the public, the operating system is now installed on 79% of active iOS devices, according to the latest adoption data shared by Apple. iOS 9 remains installed on 16% of active iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, while 5% of devices are running an earlier iOS version, as measured by the App Store on February 20. iOS 10 adoption appears to be slightly outpacing iOS 9 adoption over the same time period. iOS 9 adoption briefly stalled at 77% of active devices last February. iOS 10 could see further adoption when iOS 10.3, which is currently in beta for developers and public testers, is officially released. The software update's key new features include "Find My AirPods" and a switch to the all-new Apple File System (APFS). iOS adoption continues to significantly outpace Android. Nougat, the latest version of Android, is installed on just 1.2% of active Android devices as of February 6, despite being released six months ago today. Android Lollipop, released in November 2014, is still installed on 32.9% of active devices. Apple's control over both hardware and software gives it an advantage over the Android ecosystem, while Apple persistently notifies iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users to update to the latest iOS version, including offering the option to have the software update install overnight while the device is plugged in. RE: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
No, not all iPhones are running the same version of iOS, but it is a fact that almost 80% of all iOS devices were running iOS 10 approx. Here some data from Google about Android. That is not necessarily the case. There are many more different version of android running on different handsets. Not all iPhones either are running on the same version of iOS. Again, I feel the best way to decide, is try both out for yourself and see what you like and what serves the needs that you personally have. Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
Another difference, which may or may not matter is that with android, you can side load apps that are not in the google play store. Also, I believe that Google's app approval process is not as strict about what you can and can't do. With IOS, unless you jail break the phone, you can only install apps from the app store. While I do use IOS, I don't really like the idea of someone else deciding what I can and cannot install on my device. If Apple decides that they don't like an app for some reason, you won't be able to install it, I figure, if I purchase a device, I should be able to do what I want. > On May 20, 2017, at 5:51 PM, Nimer Jaber wrote: > > I also think it is fair to say that the apps on android or lower cost. > > Sent from my iPhone > >> On May 20, 2017, at 4:25 PM, Mike Arrigo wrote: >> >> One other advantage of Android I forgot to mention, it's much easier to >> transfer content to and from an android device because it will show up like >> any other drive when connected to a computer, and there are many file >> manager applications available for Android. Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
Hello, For me, an iOS device is like having the equivalent of both the best of Google and Apple in your pocket. Most of Google's services are on iOS, and in some instances, they run better on iOS than android. Both platforms are drawing near to each other on features I would say, but android is more refined and polished in my opinion. Android groups notifications so much better than iOS. Droid offers so much flexibility, while still giving you access to many of the same blindness apps. Android apps seem more uniform, with where buttons and controls are placed and such. Multi-tasking on android is so much better because you can truly get two apps running side by side. I guess that is called multi-window. Google continues to update and enhance accessibilwhy features. One huge benefit is that Google has web views and the screen reader as separate apps, which makes it so much easier to update when bugs are found. You often do not need to wait for an OS update. On the other hand, at the moment iOS braille support is much more refined, although this will change very soon. IPhones are more premium than many android phones, but not others. They receive updates for longer. They tend to just work without lots of battery drain, and general instability. IOs has more useful accessibility features, although Google continues to enhance their access offerings. Continuity is huge, and Google cannot match it, not even with Chrome OS. The closest you will get is by using timething like pushbullet. The apple ecosystem of peripherals for an iPhone is huge. Apple support is, by far, class-leading. Google does not have a uniform accessibility team company-wide, so different Google products will implement accessibility in different ways. I only hope they work more closely together in future. Apple's commitment to inclusion is company-wide, and includes the accessibility and usability of all of their apps and services, from the very first unboxing, and supports accessibility for even their development platform and any diagnostic modes in their products. Finally, one that many may not care too much about... IPhones are unsurpassed in most benchmarks, and what Apple can do with their hardware when software is written and designed specifically for that hardware is quite impressive. I do miss android... Apple has many quirks, and still not as much flexibility. I cannot customize an iUS device the same as an Android device. I have widgets on one page of my home screen, but I cannot move them around, and app devs seem to not have as much control over what widgets can be on Android. Notifications drive me insane... I would, at the very least, love an option to clear notifications by app, even if they are not categorized that way. I miss my app drawer... This idea that all apps show up on install on a page without the ability to have them auto-sorted or anything is annoying. I hate not having file explorer access, particularly if I connect my device to the computer and want to transfer files. I switched to iOS mostly for philosophical reasons, and I do enjoy updates, stability, a connected ecosystem, and a commitment and willingness to do accessibility right. I very much miss my android though, and Apple adding a dvorak keyboard layout would go a long way to getting me feeling more comfortable with all that I am missing. I tried to be objective, giving my assessments of both platforms. I do not pretend to know all things, so if I am missing something or if I did not get something right, please let me know. Thanks. Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
There are some advantages in getting phones from sources other than Google. No Google phone has the rugged form factor of the S7 Active, for example. Google phones don't have a home button or a SD card slot. Phones from Samsung give you a choice of another screen reader, another accessible launcher and so on. IMHO, one of the strengths of the Android ecosystem is the choice you get, including in the form factors you get to choose from. If you restrict yourself to just Google phones and stock Android then you're denying yourself one of the advantages in looking around at your Android options. BTW, this is also what leads to fragmentation in the Android ecosystem, which leads to some of the biggest issues in going with an Android device, such as waiting for updates, inaccessible skins from some manufactures and so on. On 20/05/17 13:57, Mike Arrigo wrote: It is true that each manufacturer customizes Android a bit differently, and as I said in the previous message, updates can be an issue. It is really easy to use a Braille display with IOS. Just go into VoiceOver Settings, Braille then pair it. One thing that really annoys me about Android is that from what I understand, each phone is laid out differently because each manufacturer puts its junk on. An iPhone is an iPhone. Once you learn one, you can use any iPhone that you have your hands on. Usually, when I get a new iPhone, I am able to get it set up within an hour or less then go on about my business. What really annoys me about Android is that not every phone gets updates. That means that if I am one of the unlucky people who has a phone that won't get Android O, I just have to read on mailing lists about the kool features while I'm stuck on the earlier version. It is true that each manufacturer customizes Android a bit differently, and as I said in the previous message, updates can be an issue. This is why I always suggest that if you want an android phone, get the unlocked phones sold by google, no odd customizations and very fast updates, nothing but advantages. > On May 20, 2017, at 8:27 AM, Ryan Mann wrote: > > I like the blindness apps that are available for IOS. Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
I think it comes down to personal preference. As you have said, accessibility is equal on both platforms. The way the screen readers work is also similar. There are a couple of differences. Android is more configurable, it has less restrictions. Also, many think that Google's voice features are better. On the other hand, with IOS, all currently supported devices receive the software updates as soon as they are released. With Android, this is only the case with the devices sold by google. With other brands, you have to wait until the manufacturer or carrier decides to release the update, or install a custom rom such as cyanogen which tends to release updates much faster. Both platforms have many apps available, and in many cases, the same apps are available on both platforms. With IOS, you would need to make sure you like the form factor of one of the current iphones. Again, it really comes down to personal preferences. We actually have the same platform choices as sighted consumers, and can access them at no extra cost which is the way it should be. > On May 20, 2017, at 2:23 AM, Douglas Cameron wrote: > > Hey guys. Android phones can be different because different manufacturers and carriers can make changes to support different devices, such as physical keyboards, SD card readers, different physical buttons and so on. These phones can all be running the same version of Android, just as different desktops, laptops and tablets can all be running the same version of Windows but have different form factors. Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
I think this is a bit overstated. I have an S7 Active from Samsung and a Nexus running pure Android. the systems are not that different. I happen to be using the same screen reader, launcher, TTS and so on on both systems, so they're very similar. Of course there are some differences. The Nexus only has three buttons on it while the S7 Active has seven. The S7 Active has a 4000MAH battery and there are some more differences. Depending on how you look at it, the greater amount of form factors and choice is a point in Android's favor. There's no way I could get a phone like the S7 Active as an iPhone. IMHO, there's nothing wrong with either platform and people should be glad they have a choice. As someone who uses both, I don't think this is the case, depending on how you're using the phone. I'd encourage people to base their opinions on their own recent experience with both platforms or someone who's using both and is willing to give some unbiased pros and cons of each platform. I also don't think there's any reason for anyone to convince someone to use one platform or the other. If you're happy using Android then stick with it. Ditto if you're an iPhone user. Out of curiosity, what did you dislike about TalkBack? I couldn't get the angle gestures to work consistantly. On the other hand, I can use the rotor even when I'm half asleep. RE: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
Hello, I don't particularly despise Android phones, in fact, I have a Nexus 5 that works reasonably well. But I will say for certain, with absolute confidence, that there are some cheap, poorly made phones that run Android, one brand comes to mind specifically, something called a ZTE. I was attempting to help an individual use Talkback on this phone, and you had to double tap in exactly the right place to activate an item. If you did not do this correctly, nothing would happen. Double tapping the Home icon took multiple attempts, nothing would ever activate on this cheap phone, and it was a horrible and hideous user experience. Too many poorly constructed crummy cheapphones flooding the market. Obviously, I-Devices are consistent in every way. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of MamaPeach Sent: Saturday, May 20, 2017 11:13 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS I have used both and prefer IOS to android. And as someone already stated, all Androids are different, all iPhones are all the same, so each time you switch from one Android device to another, you have to learn how that particular device works, you don't have that problem with iDevices. -Original Message- From: MamaPeach Sent: Saturday, May 20, 2017 12:12 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS I have used both and prefer IOS to android. Re: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
I have both an iPhone and an android device. In my opinion, I could use either or and do no wrong. It becomes a personal preference and Accessibility with both platform is almost the same. The fallacy is that most people use an Apple don't know much about android and vice a versa. If you use android try iOS see what you think. Everybody has their preference as said so my recommendation is go and try both and see what you like most Sincerely, Michael Maslo On Sat, May 20, 2017 at 8:27 AM -0500, "Ryan Mann" wrote: I like the blindness apps that are available for IOS. Convince me guys IOS or no IOS
Hey guys. So, yeah yeah flack time…. I currently have a blackberry PRIV running android 6.0.1, love the phone yes! But here is my question. I just got myself a brand new shiny fast sleek MBP and the question of android or IOS is popping into my head. I have a good while before I can afford to afford to get a new device, but I want some input here. Other than the continuity features, please tell me what is so great about IOS today. Please don’t tell me that its got the best accessibility, because that is a fallacy since google is equal, but features, useful new tools, etc just something that would actually sway me more to looking seriously at IOS again. thanks Doug. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
