I was using an iPhone 5 at the time, facetime is only available over 3G for
the 4s and the 5.

The question then is if that person has a shared data plan. If you could
find out that would be very helpful.

Hi all,

Anyone who has AT&T without a shared data plan is likely aware they
cannot use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I
would use Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are
cases where it may be valuable. Obviously there are services such as
Skype which apparently AT&T does not block. Now with that said I
decided to file a complaint with the FCC which is the regulatory
agency for all things related to communications such as wireless etc.
in the United States. I decided to file the complaint because there is
no technical reason for AT&T to block Face TIme over the 3G network and

especially if they do not block Skype.

My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face Time and
mor does Sprint. I believe that AT&T has taken this position for one
of two reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring

this up?

Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a complaint
that AT&T will respond. The best part is I have received an initial
verbal response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can
be best summed up as "to bad." There was absolutely no point in having
a conversation with AT&T because despite the fact I pointed out the
obvious fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or
placed any special restrictions on such services, they have blocked
Face Time. I even pointed out how Face TIme could be useful in some
circumstances for an individual with a visual impairment which
incidentally is a true statement. So, I anticipate that although AT&T
has taken this position for now they will continue to face a great
deal of pressure from individuals and groups to change their position.
The good thing is there are other avenues and options.

Not only is this somewhat of an issue for the blind and an issue for
mainstream people, it's an issue for the deaf community as well who
can use FaceTime to communicate via visual sign language. I was
considering switching providers when my contract was up, but this
settles it... I'll stick with VZW.

I have the iPhone 4s and I do have one of the Mobile Share plans
from AT&T. So, if I try to use facetime over 3G and call a
iPhone 4 where the person is using WiFi, will the facetime call
work? I just tried now with my brother, tried with both 3G and
WiFi in fact, but with no success either way. The phone rang on
my end in both cases, but he heard nothing and he couldn't call
me on his end. He said facetime is turnthe on in settings on his
phone. Our mother is in the hospital and in pretty bad shape,
although we're not sure just how bad yet, and she was asking to
see me on the phone, as we had done that a few months ago when at
his home. How do I determine if the facetime problem is on his
end or mine?

Thanks. I am sure he has a 4S, but will check. The only other reason
it would not work is a problem with a setting.

the only carrier to impose restrictions at all in the u.s. to my knowledge.

Re: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S

2012-10-02 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi,
A shared data plan, which are also refered to as share everything plans, are
usually a flat rate access cost for phones, tablets and mobile hotspots. For
example, vzw would charge $40 per smartphone on the account, $30 for a
feature phone or non-smartphone, $20 for one of the hotspot devices, and $10
for each tablet. Then there is a pool of data that all those devices can use
and you would select the amount of data you wanted access to each month. In
the case of vzw, it starts at $50 for 1GB all the way up to $150 for 20GB.
There are different packages between the two extremes at differing price
points.

An example of hw this would work is:
2 smartphones at $40 each
1 feature phone at $30
3 iPads at $10 each
10GB of data at a cost of $100 for all devices to share
Your monthly bill before taxes etc would be $240
I forgot to mention that all phones would have unlimited talk and texting.
All prices are accurate only for verizon wireless. the concept is the same
with at&t, however their pricing structure is slightly different and I can't
comment with any accuracy because I am a verizon customer and haven't looked
in to at&t's plans.

It wasn't my intention, but I may have strayed off topic for the list. My
apologies, but I thought it worth explaining.

what is a shared data plan? Is that where you pay extra to use tethering? I
currently have AT&T with an iPhone 4 and I'm trying to decide if I want to
switch to verizon. My hubby kind of does not want to because he has unlimited
data but I only have 200 megabytes. :(

It is only available on the 4S and the 5 though. If your friend has a 4,
they are out of luck. This is apple's restriction though, not vzw.

THank you very much for this information. A friend of mine has been trying
to make Face TIme work on his VZW phone with no luck. So, I will let him
know that others have had success and he then can get some help. Apparently
he knows someone at VZW who indicated you had to use Face TIme over WIFI,
but not surprised because some at the carrier are not always aware of the
changes.

Re: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S

2012-10-01 Thread James Mannion
AT&T needs to be told, probably by a court and slapped with it, that
data is data and charging for a specific use of that data which does
not constitute anything other than using data is a money grab and they
d*mn well know it.

FaceTime is available over Verizon, and so is skype. I don't have Verizon
myself, but I FaceTimed with someone over Verizon LTE today. I personally
think what AT&T is doing is complete crap, and something needs to be done
about it.

Thanks Mark, but I would still like for someone on VZW to confirm if Face

the cellular network because it is blocked. Everything I have been able to

Subject: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S

Hi all,

Anyone who has AT&T without a shared data plan is likely aware they cannot
use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I would use
Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are cases where it may
be valuable. Obviously there are services such as Skype which apparently
AT&T does not block. Now with that said I decided to file a complaint with
the FCC which is the regulatory agency for all things related to
communications such as wireless etc. in the United States. I decided to file
the complaint because there is no technical reason for AT&T to block Face
TIme over the 3G network and especially if they do not block Skype.
My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face Time and mor
does Sprint. I believe that AT&T has taken this position for one of two
reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring this up?
Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a complaint that
AT&T will respond. The best part is I have received an initial verbal
response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can be best
summed up as "to bad." There was absolutely no point in having a
conversation with AT&T because despite the fact I pointed out the obvious
fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or placed any special
restrictions on such services, they have blocked Face Time. I even pointed
out how Face TIme could be useful in some circumstances for an individual
with a visual impairment which incidentally is a true statement. So, I
anticipate that although AT&T has taken this position for now they will
continue to face a great deal of pressure from individuals and groups to
change their position.
The good thing is there are other avenues and options.
