RE: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14
Even in hospitals body temperature is not checked with a rectal thermometer or one you clamp in your arm pit any more, usually they use a forehead or ear thermometer The new Apple Watch has two temperature sensors, one is on the bottom of the watch against the skin of your arm and one is somewhere on the top which checks your surround temperature and then Apple uses some algorithm they developed to calculate body temperature. As I already pointed out, they didn't mention at all this can be used for determining fever and such, but I guess it's enough to detect changes in body temperature which they say may help women to determine when Ovulation occurs. I assume the same way as you would get to the status bar which is by touching near the top. But of course nobody really knows for sure especially from the perspective of a Voiceover user because nobody has tried it yet. This is new on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and with preorders starting tomorrow and phones starting to ship by next Friday it will be at least another 8 days before the first people who are going to preorder tomorrow will get their phones. I guess those who get one at an Apple store on Friday the 16th will be the first. In any case, this dynamic island as far as I can tell is basically a status bar on Steroids so just touching near the top where it is located should do the trick. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Star Gazer Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2022 9:35 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14 Get me smart, how does one get to the dynamic island? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Ben Mustill-Rose Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2022 10:31 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14 The dynamic island will be interesting to play with. The dynamic island will be interesting to play with. I met up with a friend the other day and in the process of that there was a point where I was messaging them on Whatsapp whilst waiting for an Uber to arrive, but I kept on having to switch between the 2 apps to check the progress of the driver. Having Whatsapp on the main screen but then being able to just slide my finger up to the island to get an at a glance type overview of the Uber will be really useful. Same for things like playback controls if I'm listening to music / a podcast while I'm doing something else on the phone. Interesting, but not interesting enough to make a purchase though, especially given my new SE2022. It let's you know the iPhone is starting up, so you don't have to just hold the power button down and hope it's coming up or hope you're waiting long enough before you hear VoiceOver prompt is heard. It'll also help you set up your iPhone before you have VoiceOver working. You'll know when to triple press the power button. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) Chaltain at Outlook -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Star Gazer Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2022 8:34 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14 What is the chime supposed to do, just be like a "hey I'm alive now" indicator? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2022 1:19 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14 It is my understanding that the chime is a new accessibility option which all iPhone 14 models have. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of CHELA Robles Sent: Wednesday, September 7, 2022 9:01 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14 I also read the pro models will have a chime at start up. Yes there is nothing in the 14 that excites me. I’m definitely going to treat myself to a new watch though as I’m still using a series 4. T He Apple Watch 8 Ultra sounds pretty cool and if I did more scuba diving than I currently do once every couple of years when I go to the Philippines I might be tempted to see how accessible it is as a dive computer; but it's definitely an impressive watch. The iPhone 14 has the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13 although they didn't say it in so many words; I think that is the first time Apple released a new iPhone and they kept using the same chip as in the one from the year before. The iPhone 14 Pro gets the latest A16 chip which makes the new camera system and always-on display possible. I thought it was nice to see that Apple included the new emergency SOS via satellite on both phones and I was definitely surprised when they said it was going to be free for the next 2 years. This would indicate, however, that ultimately it will be a paid service and of course let's not forget that it is only available for the United States and Canada at that point. For once Canada is getting something at launch which was not always the case (Apple New, Apple Pay and other features are examples where it took a while for Canada to get it). Crash detection is also part of all iPhone 14 models so now if you are driving with somebody and you have a crash (let's hope it will never happen) you may get help quicker. As expected the Mini is gone and replaced with the 6.7 inch iPhone 14 Plus. Storage still tops out at 1 Tb so no 2 Tb phone as was rumoured. Also, in the United States (not sure about Canada) all iPhone 14 models will now no longer have a SIM tray, it is e-SIM only from now on. Apart from that this is pretty much it. Anybody who has an iPhone 13 or 13 Pro has in my opinion very little reason to upgrade unless you spend considerable time out of cell service and may want the added peace of mind the emergency SOS via satellite offers; you can also share your location via Find My by satellite, but I haven't quite figured out if you can simply send text messages to somebody else, but I don't think so. If you have dedicated devices like Garmin's Inreach or a Zoleo satellite messenger which of course also requires you to subscribe to one of their plans, you can text anybody and receive text replies from anybody and you don't have to make a big production of pointing your iPhone to where the satellite is. An Inreach or Zoleo in fact can be in your backpack's top pocket and it works just fine and none of these devices have an external antenna which during the presentation Apple hinted would be required. Anyways, the satellite SOS is definitely a good start and once again something new and innovative Apple has introduced and I would bet money on it that within the next year or so Android phones will be released which also have this. What surprised me was that Apple seems to have set u p their own centre for this, but that is probably the only way they can offer this for free and they also didn't say which satellite network they use for this, i.e. Iridium or Globalstar. Will I upgrade from my iPhone 11? I honestly haven't decided, but if I do it would definitely be to a 14 Pro because then at least I would also gain the LiDAR feature. As for the Apple Watch I think I'll stick with my sixth Gen watch, it doesn't have blood oxygen or the new temperature sensor, but unless I experience what Arnold Schwarzenegger did in "Junior" I doubt I'll be pregnant any time soon. In any case, I'll wait to see if my provider wants to offer me a deal I can't refuse, Telus already sent me a message yesterday telling me that I am on their priority list and will get a call in case I want to preorder the new iPhone although even if I decide to upgrade I would probably rather buy it outright. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. It is my understanding that the chime is a new accessibility option which all iPhone 14 models have. RE: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14
If the satellite functionality doesn't work above 62 degrees North they probably use Globalstar satellites because Iridium definitely work much further north than that and probably do so all the way to the pole. And 62 degrees is not really all that far north in Canada since the border between the provinces to the Territories west of Hudson Bay runs along the 60th parallel. Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon Territory is between 60 and 61 degrees, Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territory is at well over 62 degrees. In Alaska Anchorage is just below the 62nd parallel, but Fairbanks is well over 64 degrees. I guess the number of people who live above 62 degrees is quite small when compared to the population of the country, but then again it is where this service would be most needed and where a lot of work happens like mining, oil/gas and so on. I think this will be a great feature for the places further south in Canada where the largest number of people venture out into the outdoors because in Vancouver for example one can be just a few miles from the city in some valley in the mountains and you won't have cell coverage. There are dozens and maybe hundreds of search and rescue call outs each year when some city slicker in running shoes and shorts thinks they need to go for a hike in the north shore mountains, in Vancouver it's maybe nice and warm yet even now in September the days are getting short and you can run into very nasty weather in the mountains. I don't see this new feature taking away much business from companies like Garmin or Zoleo yet because these devices are much more reliable and while it costs money and it isn't cheap, if you are really spending a lot of time out of cell coverage and you have to communicate for work or whatever then these are still your best option. A plan with unlimited messages is about $70 Canadian a month, but you can also suspend it if you mostly use the device only during the summer, then you pay $5/month which keeps everything active until you activate it again for full usage. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Kelly Pierce Sent: Wednesday, September 7, 2022 8:36 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14 The satellite alert was the most compelling part of the presentation. Well I thought the audio description was really good. I just wanna say that I’m gonna stick with my iPhone 8 Plus until it’s no longer supported with iOS versions anymore and obviously until it bites the dust or greatly has a significantly degraded battery then I will consider the later models of phones as for the Apple Watch I have The fifth series and until that bites the dust and is no longer supported regarding watchOS versions, I will use that. The ultrasounds really good and so does the eight model. No mention of iOS 16 being compatible with older phones but we shall see once it’s rolled out. if I remember correctly the 8+ will support iOS 16 but I could be very wrong. and of course I think watchOS 9 will support series 5 of its watch. First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14
The Apple Watch 8 has some good new features with crash detection and the build-in body temperature sensor, but from what they said during the event that temperature sensor seems to be exclusively used for cycle tracking and may help women who are wanting to get pregnant, they did not say you could simply use it to measure your body temperature as you can with a Withings Thermo or other body temperature thermometer to see if you have a fever or not.
