Hi guys. I've installed the Google Assistant and it's pretty cool. I'm not
concerned about the privacy issues so it's a keeper. As far as accessibility
goes, it's very accessible and I love the two Lucky Trivia games you can play
with it. Lucky Trivia and Lucky Trivia Sports. Now I have 4 assistants I can
use; Cortana, Siri, Alexa with the Echo Dot I purchased last month and now
this. I'm excited to review this app for season 3 of my show.

It wants to "assist" you. You have to help it help you, guys. But if you
want Siri, it’s always on that iPhone. :) I wouldn’t use
Assistant on the iPhone mainly because it doesn’t have the
privileges which Siri does. But, if you want to see its power,
ask it to play "I’m feeling lucky."

That may very well be so, but that still doesn't mean I have to do everything I
can to give Google as much information as possible. In any case, true privacy
does exist, it's just that most of us don't choose to give up the conveniences
of modern life and technology to achieve it. I live in northern BC and know
quite a few people who don't have a cell phone, they have never signed up for
an email address let along a Facebook account and probably have never been
online. They live in the country or the bush and some don't even have a phone
or electricity. Would I want to live like this, well, no, but I can still be
careful what I post on Facebook, how much access I give to various apps and
what devices I allow into my home. If I don't have an internet connected camera
in my house there is no chance anybody can hack it.

Hi richard,
Well to be honest, I saw an article and had a link in the article to the App
Store. So I follow that link. I never actually search in the App Store. So
I'm not sure what you would search under. I don't have the article anymore
sorry. I'm going to delete the app in any case.

The app just became available in the App Store today, coincident with the start
of Google I/O. It's definitely there, and it definitely requires this location
thing be turned on and be active even when you're not using the app. No thank
you.

Hi richard,
Well to be honest, I saw an article and had a link in the article to the App
Store. So I follow that link. I never actually search in the App Store. So
I'm not sure what you would search under. I don't have the article anymore
sorry. I'm going to delete the app in any case.

They much touted Google Assistant is now available in the Apple App Store.
I downloaded it and opened it, and in order to work at all, you need to
give it permission to access location even when you're not using it. This
is so it can make a so-called private map of where you have been and where
you are when you're using it. So I wonder how much of a toll that is going
to take on Battery Life. And do I really trust Google that t it's private?
Given that they sell data? I was looking forward to certain aspects of
Google assistant. But it seems to be totally crippled unless you give them
permission. I don't see why he couldn't do other things that are not
location dependent.

I gave some apps location access, because they clearly need it, like maps apps
for instance. But why does an app need to have location services when it's not
even being used? To me, that makes exactly no sense. Hope they fix it. But
since they really want data, they might not regarded as a "fix".

The app just became available in the App Store today, coincident with the start

Re: Google assistant comes to the iPhone

2017-05-17 Thread Mary Otten
No, you cannot say OK Google to the assistant on the iPhone. Apple will not
allow that, at least as of now. That would take one of the few advantages that
Siri still has a way, since you can do Siri hands-free and no other assistant
is allowed that privilege on the iPhone.

Re: Google assistant comes to the iPhone

2017-05-17 Thread Mary Otten
Hi richard,
Well to be honest, I saw an article and had a link in the article to the App
Store. So I follow that link. I never actually search in the App Store. So I'm
not sure what you would search under. I don't have the article anymore sorry.
I'm going to delete the app in any case.

RE: Google assistant comes to the iPhone

2017-05-17 Thread Richard Turner
Thanks.
Interesting that it didn't show up when I searched for Google Assistant.
But, after reading the information it gathers, I'm with Mary on this one.
It even keeps track of the music, books, apps, contacts, etc. That is way too
much information to trust to Google in my opinion.

I'll stick with Siri as my assistant.

Richard

RE: Google assistant comes to the iPhone

2017-05-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

Yes, Google's business is to collect as much information about you as possible
so they can use said information/data to target ads based on your habits and so
on. The fact that this would always want access to my location is one reason
for me not even to bother installing it. I have turned frequent locations off
in iOS under Location Services > System Services because while I trust Apple a
lot more than Google, I still don't think they need to keep track of everywhere
I go, there is probably already enough of that simply by virtue your phone is
constantly communicating with cell towers.

This is also one of the reasons why I haven't bothered yet with something ike
the Echo or the Google Home. I am not paranoid about this sort of stuff or see
a conspiracy in everything, but there is something that makes me uncomfortable
aobut having a highly sensitive speaker in my home that listens to everything
that goes on and is said unless you turn it off which defeats the purpose. Of
course I have also not been tempted too much yet because neither Amazon nor
Google so far have bothered to make their smart speakers officially available
in Canada. There are places in the States where I could order one and they
would ship to Canada, but why should I do this if the companies themselves
don't seem to want my business.
I must say that if Apple comes out with one which now seems more and more
likely I will be much more tempted. For one it is more likely that it will be
available here in Canada and as I said, I trust Apple more with my privacy than
Amazon or Google. Microsoft of course is said to also get into this possibly
via a partnership with Harman Kardon and down the road maybe other companies so
we'll have to wait and see. I guess in a few years these things will be as
common place as cell phones and most people will be talking to their virtual
assistants at home via such devices.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Google assistant comes to the iPhone

2017-05-17 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Mary,

This is interesting.

Is this app actually called Google Assistant? Or are you referring to Google
Now.

I checked the app a week ago and it was not there.

Funny about the location services condition.

On my Samsun Galaxy phone, I have location services turned off and I can use
the Google assistant just fine.

Mark

They much touted Google Assistant is now available in the Apple App Store. I
downloaded it and opened it, and in order to work at all, you need to give it
permission to access location even when you're not using it. This is so it can
make a so-called private map of where you have been and where you are when
you're using it. So I wonder how much of a toll that is going to take on
Battery Life. And do I really trust Google that t it's private? Given that they
sell data? I was looking forward to certain aspects of Google assistant. But it
seems to be totally crippled unless you give them permission. I don't see why
he couldn't do other things that are not location dependent.
