RE: Handwriting feature when entering passcode
I just tried even though this is not something I usually do, but I can confirm that while it sometimes said "not recognized", if I wrote the numbers slowly and carefully it sounded like it was entering the numbers, but when I checked it still had 0 numbers out of 6 entered. Sounds like a bug, report it to Apple Accessibility and hopefully they'll fix it some time. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Christina Sent: Monday, September 30, 2019 4:21 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Handwriting feature when entering passcode I’m on an iPhone 11. WhatsApp does not show up under W when using handwriting
Hi, I noticed this some time ago and wanted to confirm if this is the case for others. If I want to open an app which is not on my first home screen I often use the handwriting feature where you can write the first letter or two of an app and a short list of apps which meet the letter or letters you wrote shows up. I noticed some time ago that I could not open WhatsApp this way any more, it simply does not show up when I use handwriting at all. If I write a W I get 4 results: Wallet Watch Weather Weather Office The first 3 are stock apps which are preinstalled with iOS and the last is a Canadian weather app I use. I definitely have WhatsApp on my iPhone as I use it all the time, but it simply stopped showing up under “W” some months ago although I used to be able to open it from handwriting. The interesting thing is that if you write a single letter, for example, an “A”, you get a list of all apps starting with an A, in my case there are 13 of them. If I now swipe right to left with 2 fingers I am deleting the letter I just wrote and if I only wrote 1 letter it means the entry field is now blank and you get an alphabetical list of all apps on your phone, in my case Voiceover says “111 apps”. Alphabetically you will be at the place in that list based on the letter you wrote, e.g. if you write a “G” and swipe left with 2 fingers to delete that G and you then swipe down with 2 fingers in the full list of apps you have you will be in the apps starting with G, if you swipe up once you will be at the last app in the list of apps starting with a F. For example: If I write a “G” I get the following apps: Google Google Home Google Maps If I now delete that G by swiping left with 2 fingers I hear “111 apps” and if I swipe up once with 2 fingers to move to the previous app in the list I hear “Flicktype” because that is the last app I have starting with an F, if I swipe down again with 2 fingers I get Google, Google Home, Google Maps, then Health. I discovered that WhatsApp is still there in this alphabetical list, but it’s the very last entry and it’s the first one if I type an “A” and swipe up with 2 fingers. In fact, the last app in my list alphabetically is YouTube, but if I swipe down from YouTube instead of going directly to the “A” apps, I have 4 apps which are not in alphabetical order: Epost iTunes Store my Sun Life WhatsApp Please note that I actually used a 3-finger quadruple tap to copy each of the above apps to the clipboard, I then pasted them into an email and sent it to myself and copied them to paste them here. I wanted to see if there was anything strange about the spelling or upper/lower case. Interestingly enough the first 3 apps, epost, iTunes Store and My Sun Life I can all access directly using handwriting, e.g. epost shows up if I write an “e”, iTunes Store is the only thing under “I” and My Sun Life shows up under “M”. I will have to ask a sighted person, but there is something in front of WhatsApp which Jaws does not read, it just doesn’t say anything, not blank or a letter, just silence, but there is a character there which is I assume what prevents WhatsApp from not showing up under “W”. I’d appreciate it if somebody could confirm this since I’d love to let WhatsApp know about this and I want to make sure this is not just some strange behavior on my phone. Shortcuts 2.2 brings support for Apple Notes with handwriting recognition, iMore
Shortcuts 2.2 brings support for Apple Notes with handwriting recognition The Shortcuts app has a few new features to make your experience better than ever. By Matthew Cassinelli, 28 Mar 2019 Apple has released version 2.2 of the Shortcuts app, bringing with it new actions for the default Notes app, updates to the Travel Time and Adjust Date action, adds support for Baidu Maps, and includes a number of smaller features and some critical bug fixes. Overall the update brings some much-need stability, a new set of tools for everyday users to play around with and discover how to integrate into their workflow, and opens up transportation automation for a huge subset of users worldwide. Here's how. Support for the Notes app With the new support for Notes, users can use Create Note, Append to Note, Find Notes, and Show Note in the course of their custom shortcuts, allowing for programmatic interaction with the thoughts and ideas they've jotted down. It's now possible to create notes in the background without displaying the Notes compose sheet, to add to the same note over and over with Append to Note, to bring the text of your Notes into Shortcuts and act on them, and to open Notes to any individual note that you're working with (used in combination with one of the other three actions). Plus, anytime you are working Notes content as a variable in Shortcuts, you can tap on the variable to extract further details like only the body, the Folder it resides in within the Notes app, and the Creation or Modification date. Even further, we've discovered that the Find Notes action brings in the full text of anything that's been hand-written in your notes - as long as iOS can recognize the word. This means that users of iPads and the Apple Pencil (or with other styluses or using your finger on iPhone) can write things out by hand, use Find Notes to grab that note, and copy out what they've written. Previously it was only possible to search for Notes and have it return the words it recognizes, but now that OCR (optical character recognition) works in conjunction with the Shortcuts app, and any other potential endpoint it can hook into. This is a huge leap for handwriting on iOS, because any advanced support required third-party apps - and now, it can be scripted into your shortcuts, and even triggered with Siri to grab that text out of a note, which is pretty powerful stuff. More actions and updates Alongside the Notes actions, Apple added Get Numbers From Input, support for Baidu maps, updates to the Travel Time action, and the addition of Get Start of Calendar Week to the Adjust Date action. Get Numbers From Input works as a way to find any values inside content and extract just that data, ignoring all of the text or other information that's non-numeric. Using this, people can scrape out information from inside larger chunks of content, strip out the units for any measurements they might be working with, and get just the numbers they might need. This action drops in alongside other "Get from Input" actions like those that grab email addresses, phone numbers, contacts, dates, text, dictionaries, URLs, addresses, and images too, which can be handy for information workflows. Shortcuts has also added support for opening into Baidu Maps if you have it installed, which means you can use the Show Directions action in either Driving, Walking, Biking, or Transit mode. For the millions and millions of Chinese users who rely on this for transportation, this is a huge boon for their automation potential. Curiously, however, Baidu Maps isn't supported within the Show in Maps action. But for those using Apple Maps and the Get Travel Time action, there are some welcome additions to the information provided. Beyond just getting the total length of the trip, users can tap on any Travel Time variables and further extract the Arrival Time, Route Name, and Distance to the destination. That means it's much easier to set up commuting shortcuts that tell your family when you're getting home, or have Siri inform you which route to take by asking the HomePod as you prepare to leave, or estimate how far it is between two destinations. And in a small but helpful update, the Adjust Date action can return the start of the current week in addition the the start of the minute, hour, day, and month. Previously it'd require fancy date and time math to calculate when the previous Sunday is based off the current date, and now it's a feature in the app. While the usefulness of this depends on your needs, it means it's much easier to build shortcuts that estimate weekly ranges - say you do a weekly report and want the dates for Sunday and the next Saturday to display at the top of your report, now you can Adjust Date set to Get Start of Current Week and use another Adjust Date to add 6 days to it. Or you could curate a weekly playlist in Apple Music with a nicely-for

Hi Bill and all, This app was really cool when it came out several years ago. Unfortunately, though, it hasn't been updated in years, and I find it crashes a lot. DoItWrite, a tool for practicing handwriting
Good day, list. I have begun using the app DoItWrite, available for $1.99 in the app store to practice handwiriting. Note the spelling w r I t e. I did this as I have found that apparently my handwriting has deteriorated, even though I had enough vision many years ago to have learned how to write by hand. This app is designed with the VoiceOver user in mind, and requires that it be turned on and that handwriting be placed in the rotor. I was playing around with it today and it seems to function pretty well, giving good descriptions of how to write each character when in the learning mode. There are four categories to choose from, lower and upper case, numbers, and punctuation, just as with the handwriting mode. The app has four tabs, home, which describes the apps function, the learn tab where you practice, the play tab, which I haven't used yet, which provides a game designed to increase speed, and the settings tab. If you have done the necessary activation of VoiceOver and handwriting, the only setting you should need to be concerned with is repeats, which governs how many times you draw the character correctly before you move on to the next one. This can be set anywhere from none to five; I set it at three. \ I got through all the lower case letters this morning, but had the most trouble with I and f, especially dotting the i. I started upper case and began pretty well, although the A seemed to insist on adding the crossbar even though that wasn't in the app's description. I had trouble ewith the capital G, perhaps since I was having trouble grasping the description fully, though I once saw well enough to know that that should look like. That's were II stopped after about an hour total of work. So if you are having difficulty using the handwriting mode or with handwriting in general, this tool might be helpful. Re: Seeing AI success; handwriting channel
Bill, I'm a bit behind on my messages, but this is so exciting, when it comes to something as this, being able to do something that wasn't possible before, and I could hear how it made your day a bit better. This is so good to know that it can work so well, thank you. Arlene - Original Message - From: Bill Outman To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2018 4:05 AM Subject: Seeing AI success; handwriting channel Good morning, list. First, I am glad my modem problems at home were resolved yesterday, so I can do email and surf the web at home whenever I want, and not have to gobble up data on my iPhone because of not being connected to Wi-Fi. Before that happened, I had a success with Seeing AI in the handwriting channel that was very fulfilling. I was doing laundry and found a paper taped to the top of one of the dryers at my apartment complex. I first tried the K-NFB Reader, a good program that I have enjoyed having available to me for several years in its various forms on different platforms. It found no text, even reporting the page was upside down. Then I tried Microsoft Seeing AI which I was using live for the first time after having played around in the help documentation last weekend. I went to the handwriting channel, figuring that might do the trick as K-NFB had reported no text. I assumed, it turned out correctly, that the paper was oriented correctly when taped to the dryer. I took the picture and Seeing AI processed it very quickly. I discovered that someone had written that the dryer had taken their change and that it didn’t work. I only wish I had discovered this before putting coins in it myself, only to learn I had to move the load to another dryer. This blew me away a bit, finding I could do a task that has heretofore been impossible. I was so excited I forgot to start the washer with the next load and had to go back to do it. It was a few minutes later when I grabbed the mail early from the letter carrier and then the computer technician came to install the new modem. That was the second attempt, as Earthlink had sent me a bed one last week. It’s good that we have app choices so that if one doesn’t perform well in a given situation, we have others that might. This all made for a pretty good day for me. Bill Outman -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: Seeing AI success; handwriting channel
The Seeing AI app has 9 channels. They are in a pick list, just above the home button. You touch there and you should hear, "Channel" followed by the name of the channel you are on. If you want a different channel, you flick up with one finger, or down if you are not on the first channel and want one earlier in the list. It is free. I cannot stress strongly enough that everyone should download it and give it a try. Seeing AI success; handwriting channel
Good morning, list. I discovered that someone had written that the dryer had taken their change and that it didn't work. Hello Harry. I got some number 2 pencil styluses from Griffin Technologies for $8.49, some time ago. I did a search on their website and unfortunately, they are sold out. You can use any stylus with a capacitor tip to mimic your fingertip. I did an experiment and one pencil mimics 1 fingertip; Two pencils mimic 2 fingertips; Three pencils mimic 3 fingertips. I only have 3 pencil styluses, so I don’t know about the 4-finger gestures, but I am assuming a fourth stylus would work as a fourth finger. Let me offer my apologies for accidentally helping to lead this thread astray! :) Once again, for those who may not be familiar with using the handwriting mode to find apps, if you use the rotor to locate the handwriting option while you are on the home screen, you can then draw letters with your finger. Each letter you draw will cause a list of apps to be displayed, which you can then navigate using a two-finger flick up or down. The more letters you draw, the more refined the list of apps will become until you either find the app you are looking for or the list can get no smaller. Does this make sense? In this way, you can either find a nice list of apps which begin with a single letter, go quickly to a specific app from anywhere on your phone, or anything in between. Hope this helps. Hey, yes! for those who know how to make the letters, this would be a great way to find apps. The question I have is: There used to be a game where we could learn to write, and it was cool and great fun. Do y'all remember this game? I lost it and would like to have it again. Re: Bluetooth and handwriting issues in 8.1
I am having the handwriting issue on an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1. It is very annoying to say the least, but I didn't think of writing something in lower case and then erasing and switching to upper. I usually prefer uppercase anyway since I'm more confident when I need to draw the larger letters. Anyway, email Apple Accessibility and remind them. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. Bluetooth and handwriting issues in 8.1
Hello, I took the plunge and upgraded to 8.1. Now I have two issues I have found. 1. When using my bluetooth keyboard, even if quick nav is off, the keyboard will not work in an edit field. I need to cycle quick nav back on, then off, and hit a space bar to start the keyboard working. Then I can remove that space and type normally. 2. When using handwriting in an edit field, I cannot change the mode from lower-case to upper-case or any other option. To do so I need to first enter a letter in lower-case. Then I can change the mode and delete that character if desired. Anyone else having these issues? Thanks, Denny -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: learning handwriting
Hi Dean, Are you thinking of , DoItWrite for iPhone. I checked the below web page and there is no page that contains the text used to describe the letters. It costs, $1.99 USD Learn to draw lowercase letters, uppercase letters, and numbers for use with iOS 7's VoiceOver handwriting feature! This app is primarily intended for the blind or visually impaired, teachers or instructors of same, and other users of iOS 7's VoiceOver screen reader. Many blind or visually impaired people are not familiar with the shapes of printed letters or numbers. DoItWrite teaches you how to draw them in a simple way that has the best chance of being correctly recognized by VoiceOver, even if you have never learned the shapes of the characters previously. Once you get them down, practice your speed and accuracy with a fun game to blast characters as they tumble down the screen! .Learn how to activate the VoiceOver handwriting feature in iOS 7 .Learn how to draw lowercase and uppercase letters, as well as numbers in a simple and accurate way. .Practice your newly acquired skills by blasting letters and numbers as they tumble down the screen. .Use the app to improve your onscreen typing skills by using the keyboard during game play. .Automatic feedback and coach via audio queues and speech output. .DoItWrite automatically detects when VoiceOver is not running, and permits the tutorial to be browsed with the onscreen keyboard. Great for sighted teachers and tutors! .Share your game scores with others. .Many ways to customize your learning experience. .Requires iOS 7 http://dracoent.com/Iphone/DoItWrite -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: Does handwriting not work on IPad and IPod anymore.
It works for some and not for others. I have been using it with mostly no issues on my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0.2. I have experienced some slow down or times when the usual handwriting gestures were not recognized, like when switching from lower to upper case letters. I mainly use it for opening apps from the home screen. I have heard reports from others on this list where VoiceOver crashes at some point when writing, but I haven't had this happen yet, knock on wood. Re: handwriting mode
Hi Go to Settings,General, Accessibility, Voiceover, swip down to rotor and select handwriting to add it to your rotor settings. To access the rotor, place 2 fingers on the screen of your device and turn as if you were turning a dial on a radio or twisting of a bottle cap. Re: Handwriting Mode Experiences?
Hi The problem that I'm having is the iPhone locking even though I'm interacting with the screen while using the handwriting feature. I don't use handwriting often. Here are the gestures that work for me 1 Trace the letter on the screen. Voiceover will announce the number of apps that begin with that letter. 2 Swipe up with 2 fingers to advance through the list of apps that begin with the letter you chose to search. 3 If there are no apps that begin with the letter that you wrote or to go on to a ddifferent letter search, a 2 finger from right to left, voiceover should announce the previous letter searched, swipe from left to right to enter the next letter you desire to do a search for apps. Handwriting Mode Experiences?
I think the handwriting mode introduced in iOS 7 could be particularly helpful if I can get it to work as advertised. Since I have several screens of apps, I'm particularly interested in using it from a home screen to pull up a list of apps from which to select. However, I'm getting very inconsistent results. VoiceOver always consistently announces the handwriting setting of lower case when I first select it on the rotor. And when I trace the first letter on the screen, I usually get an announcement of the number of apps beginning with that letter. However, when I try to initiate another attempt, I often get dead silence. Even when moving to another rotor setting and using it and then going back to handwriting, my next attempts are often met with silence. I'm curious if anyone is consistently using this option successfully and if there are any best practices you could point me to so I might master it. Thanks in advance. Re: Handwriting - how to get a comma
Hi I have found out that the colon actually is done by making two small lines under each other on the screen. I am not perfect in english, but if you make the two lines straight vertically under each other you never know if it will be a colon og a semi-colon. But if you make them go a little to the left it will always be a semicolon, logical for me because the comma in the button of the semi-colon is usually handwritten as at line that goes a little down to the left. If toy make the two lines under each other go a little to the right it will always be a colon. Re: handwriting app
I'm confused what you're asking for. Does this have anything to do with the handwriting feature? If you're looking for apps to place calls, manage your contacts and send text messages, I'd give the native apps a spin before looking for other apps. If you want to look for other apps, I'd suggest checking out AppleVis.com, where you'll find accessible apps discussed in several different categories. Handwriting to sign into Skype doesn't work
Hi I downloaded the Skype app on my IPad and tried to use the handwriting mode to sign into my Hotmail account. When I was using the handwriting mode the letter I was writing VO said them but my wife said nothing is being put into the edit box. So we had to enter my sign in information using the on screen keyboard. Has anyone had this problem? Ed -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group. Hi, After putting in your punctuation, if its not the one you want, simply flick down with 2 fingers. You'll find them all there. The comma is difficult so just tap the screen to get a period and flick to the comma. Ron & Danvers Falling down is part of LIFE... To enter a comma, try entering a period with a single tap and then use a two finger swipe down to find the comma. try a similar trick for the dash. Re: Need help with handwriting
This is an appropriate thread; since I've started using the handwriting feature I find it much more convenient to send messages, make notes and generally other things that require text input. But there are a few things I find difficult: - how to enter a dash (-) as opposed to an underscore (_)? - how to enter a comma (,)? My wife had her iPhone stolen when her office was broken into just a few days before IOS 7 came out. With this fresh on my mind, I set up a pass code when I installed IOS 7. I doubt I'd still have it set if I couldn't use handwriting mode. Convenience and security are so often at odds. It is also worth a mention that if you are looking to stop other people hearing your password and know your keypad ok you can three finger double tap to mute speech, you will still get the clicks. This assumes you don't have Zoom turned on with Voice Over where you will find a three finger double tap toggles Zoom. On 24 Oct 2013, at 19:21, Peter Holdstock wrote: > I think it’s great. I think it’s great. It means you can input your passcode without headphones and everyone hearing it. Re: entering passcode with handwriting mode
I actually love this aspect of hand writing mode and entering my pass code. I think it's a great idea. Occasionally, I'll mess up, but I always get my pass code the first or second try. If I do happen to miss it a second time, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I just twist the roter away from hand writing and use the numeric key pad, where you do get audio feedback of the code you're entering. Re: Handwriting
Sure, not only has it been discussed a lot on list, so you could find a lot in the list archives, you can also use Google to find blog articles and podcasts on it. One I found quickly is at http://www.fedoraoutlier.com/handwriting-in-ios-7-2/ After you add hand writing to your roter, when entering text, you can change your roter to hand writing and then draw characters on the screen to enter them. I find it particularly useful when entering my pass code. It's quick and you don't have your numbers echoed as you look for them on the numeric keypad. Re: Handwriting
Just keep going. Wehn you find or write the character you want, it is entered already. Double tapping will not do anything. So, if you draw a circle and VO says "o", the "o" is already typed into the text field and you can move to the next character. I hope that makes sense. Hi Bill, I have had some success doing quotation marks by very quickly doing 2 commas. I can't count on results so I simply do a period and flick down with 2 fingers and, for those hard to get, I simply select the mark I want. Ron & Danvers Falling down is part of LIFE...
