Having issues with stand scan
Hi list, I am after a bit of help from stand scan users, I just got my stand scan today and got some sighted help to assemble it. I have the pro version, so far I haven't noticed any improvements with my results when using it. When I use prismo in combination with the stand scan I don't even get usable images. When I use text detective with the product I get a mangled version of the stand scans facebook address. Does anyone have any tips for getting better results? as at the moment I am beginning to wonder if I wasted my money on a glorified box. I decided to get it when I read the examples that were posted of very readable crossword book pages. I have never managed to get prismo to work in all the time I have used it, and the only OCR app I have had limited success with is text detective. I am pretty sure my camera on the phone is lined up correctly as I just feel for the little lens circle in the top right corner next to the sleep button. I put it over the hole then feel underneath to check its lined up with the hole. I have the document I am doing test scans with lying directly on the bottom of the box and I try to make sure its lined up with the hole. I have tried turning the document in pretty much all directions with no success apart from the mangled facebook address. The document I am testing with is the little set of instructions that came with stand scan. thanks so much for any help, Alex. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Having issues with stand scan
Did you get the StandScan or the StandScan Pro? The StandScan Pro has lights along the top back of the box that you plug in. If you got the StandScan, it is highly likely you do not have enough light on your document. Also, is your iPhone completely square to the top of the box? If not, your image is skewed and you will not get an understandable OCR. re: Having issues with stand scan
Hi David, I definitely got the pro version as it plugs in, I also used the viPhone code when getting the product. I must admit when I put the camera on the hole it isn't square along the top of the box, this is because when I put it completely square along the box it doesn't feel like the camera is anywhere near the hole, I have also done tests with the light detector app and have found that I get the highest pitch when I place the phone kind of diagonally across the top of the box. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Having issues with stand scan
Hi Alex, Once you line up the camera and the hole with your finger, you can use two U.S. pennies to align the iPhone with the front edge of the Stand Scan. The side of the phone with the volume and mute switches should be parallel with the front edge one penny's width back. Hope this helps, Chuck On Apr 2, 10:30 am, Alex Wallis alexwallis...@googlemail.com wrote: Hi David, I definitely got the pro version as it plugs in, I also used the viPhone code when getting the product. RE: Having issues with stand scan
Hi Alex, That will not do. When your phone is not squared with the box, your text is diagonal and that won't work at all. Put your camera over the hole and square off the camera with the front and the right side of the box. When you get it right, put some sticky locater dots on the box so you always have the same position. I stuck 2 strips of Velcro on mine so I can feel the right position. Hi Chuck, thanks for your message, I am from the UK so don't know what a US penny is like. I have been trying to keep the lens of the camera completely over the hole, your message suggests that maybe I am going wrong. When I try to put the phone parallel with the edge of the box it feels like the phone is hanging over slightly. I am placing the phone length wise across the box in landscape in other words. Re: Having issues with stand scan
Hello Alex, Your phone will need to be about half an inch in from the front edge. Put it to the right of the hole with the Home button to the right. It has to be square on to the text you want to scan. Re: Having issues with stand scan
Hi Alex, Once your Stand scan is set up properly, you should be facing the opening. The document should be placed in the opening print side up with the top to the left. The phone should be parallel to the box, with the camera over the hole. The home button to the right, the sleep, or on -off button to the left and the volume controls to the front. The U.S. Penny is 19 mm and the British new penny is a little over 20 mm, so it should also work. So, once you have the phone roughly in position use two new pennies to gauge the proper distance from the front edge of the stand scan to the edge of the iPhone with the volume switches. BTW. I am using an iPhone 4 S. I think this will also work with the iPhone 5, but the iPhone 3G has rounded edges and may be more difficult to feel. RE: Having issues with stand scan
Hi, Your phone should be going along the length of the box so there is no way it can be hanging off the edge. That is where your problem is. Re: Having issues with stand scan
In that case, you have explained very well why the OCR is not working. Forget about the light probe. As long as the lights are plugged in, they are on and providing appropriate light. It is critical that you set the iPhone square to the box. Setting the iPhone in diagonal means the image is so skewed that OCR WILL NOT WORK. Square to the box means: with the camera in the upper right corner of the back of the iPhone over the hole in the top of the box, the opposite side, the side with the volume buttons, is along the edge of the box. The entire side of the phone is the same distance from the edge of the box. This eliminates skew as much as possible so the page can be recognised using OCR. Re: Having issues with stand scan
Hello Alex, I will try to give a different spin on the directions, so that you can align the phone's camera propcrly on the StandScan. Think of the oval apeture as a rectangle. For right-handed individual, place the upper right corner at the upper left corner of the apeture. Make sure you don't leave any space on the left side or the top edge of the apeture. The home button will be pointing to the right. By setting up camera this way, there should be about 1/2 inch space from the long edge of the StandScan and the phone. I used a Wicki Stick to mark the position of the phone on the box. I made the lenght of the Wicki Stick the same lenght of the phone and laid it on the back of the phone. This gave me an indicator for good alignment and it help not to move the phone when taking the picture or reading the OCR on the phone. I hope all of this makes sense to you. Contact me off list if you need more assistance.
