Thanks for replying.
No best buy here, but Amazon AU may have some of these items.

Will do some research.

I live in a High-Rise which I rent so may need to speak to the ground manager.

As for installation of video camera etc, will see if I can get someone to do
that for me.

As for setting them up, the Philips Hue is pretty straight forward,
installation of a thermostat will require you to most likely get a qualified
technician and the video doorbells are somewhere in the middle. If you have an
existing doorbell it's not too hard, but it may require some drilling,
connecting some wires etc., it all depends on how handy you are with such
things.

Philips Hue is Homekit, Alexa and Google home compatible so you can't go wrong

single bulb and then there is a group of 3 lights roughly in the middle and
another group of 2 above the sink. We called the dining table exactly that,
dining table, the main kitchen group is just kitchen and the one by the sink I
called kitchen sink. Now I can tell SIRI or Alexa to turn on the dining table
or I can tell it to turn on kitchen and all 3 bulbs of the main light fixture
come on, I can also tell it to turn on Kitchen Sink 1 in which case only one of
the two bulbs there comes on. I can then furthermore say to "make the dining

also a coloured light so I can tell SIRI to "make the dining table light purple
or whatever and it's done.spot

As for thermostats I have the Honeywell Lyric T5, a relatively inexpensive WiFi
connected thermostat with an accessible app and again compatible with
Homekit/Siri as wel as Alexa. If I wake up in the winter when during the night
we lower the temperature I can just say "Alexa, set the temperature to 22
degrees" and it does it and the furnace turns on. I can also tell Alexa or SIRI
to make it 1 degree cooler if it'

S too warm but I can't remember what the temperature is set at and it lowers
the temperature by 1 degree.

For front door security we have a ring video doorbell which works OK although I
would possibly consider the Honeywell Skybell or Nest Hello doorbell as well.

Re: Accessible home automation systems

2015-11-10 Thread Gadget Girl
Hi. We are contemplating a home automation system as well and were advised to
take a look at Savant and Control 4. They both have Apps in the App Store, but
you need the system and an account to use the App. Therefore, I don't know how
VoiceOver friendly they are, despite the contractor telling us they are. Just
wanted to throw some other names out there. For more information, the
contractor suggested we call a Best Buy Magnolia Design Center, as they sell
both of these systems and should be knowledgeable. Good luck in your search.

RE: Accessible home automation systems

2015-11-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would probably want to make sure that whatever system I look at supports
Apple's home kit. Not sure how much Apple is going to push this since it was
announced I think 2 years ago and I don't think there are as many devices out
there as one might have thought. I also thought the new fourth generation Apple
TV would have been designed as a connected home appliances hub which again at
this point is not the case.

I have had my Radio Thermostats for I think 2 years now, maybe going into year
3, but lights like Philipps Hue and other connected lights I still find quite
prohibitively expensive if you are looking to equip an even mid-size house with
say 25 to 40 bulbs, at $60 a pop you are looking at a minimum of $1,500 to
$2,500, add a good quality lock, thermostat and maybe security camera and you
can easily spend $3,000 to $4,000.
I am at this point waiting to see what will happen in the next couple of years
before I spend hundreds and possibly thousands of Dollars for a minor
convenience where I might get something much better and possibly less expensive
down the road. As with all technology, these types of devices will become more
popular and drop in price and they are not necessarily going to be things you
want to replace every 2 years. LED light bulbs, for example, have a lifespan of
at least 10 years and when I do buy them I want to be sure it's what I want.
Like I said, one of these Philipps connected bulbs is $60, a regular good
quality LED light bulb is now available for $8 or $10 and you can probably even
find some that are a bit less. Granted, having bulbs you can control from your
phone, change to any colour you want and so on comes with a huge "cool factor",
but the energy saving benefit you get even with the bulb that costs 80% less.

Re: Accessible home automation systems

2015-11-10 Thread Joe Orozco
Apologies. Some of the elements are labeled, but there is more of the
interface that could really use tweaking to make it truly an
accessible experience. For example, it's somewhat possible to activate
a scene like turning on lights and unlocking front door, but it's not
exactly doable to set up this scene. Mind you, this was a few versions
back. The SmartThings app I'm sure has been updated since then. I'm
sure my feedback to the developers would carry more weight if more
people wrote to them. I chose SmartThings because it's very integrated
with a lot of systems out there, including now the Amazon Echo. Other
systems such as that sold by Home Depot felt very limited in the
signals they worked with, but of course this is just one guy's
opinion. Mi Casa Verde was another system I considered. I believe it's
possible to do more tweaking of their system via an online interface,
but I generally found the hub to be more outdated.

Home automation, was: WeMoR products?

2014-11-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Carol,

The WEMO app from Belkin controls electrical devices and appliances which are
plugged into a WEMO switch or you can control lights if you replace the regular
light switch with a Belkin WEMO light switch.
There are now also some appliances like a coffee maker, air purifier and so on
which apparently can be controlled directly with the app. Here is the app store
link:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/wemo/id511376996?mt=8

I am very interested in this type of stuff and home automation and appliance
control in general, but with Apple's new home kit in iOS 8 I am not jumping on
anything right now because I think given what they announced about the
partnerships with several companies during the June keynote, I am sure we will
see a lot more product in this area which might work even better than what is
already out there.

The WEMO light switch and plug-in type switch is available on Amazon.ca for
about $50 Canadian or on Amazon.com for about $42 US. For lights I think I
prefer the idea of the Philipps Hue light bulbs where you control the light
bulb itself instead of the switch. In addition to turning it on and off you can
control the brightness of the light and even change the colour.

Sieghard

Hi Carol,

The WEMO app from Belkin controls electrical devices and appliances which
are plugged into a WEMO switch or you can control lights if you replace the
regular light switch with a Belkin WEMO light switch.
There are now also some appliances like a coffee maker, air purifier and so
on which apparently can be controlled directly with the app. Here is the app
store link:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/wemo/id511376996?mt=8

I am very interested in this type of stuff and home automation and appliance
control in general, but with Apple's new home kit in iOS 8 I am not jumping
on anything right now because I think given what they announced about the
partnerships with several companies during the June keynote, I am sure we
will see a lot more product in this area which might work even better than
what is already out there.

The WEMO light switch and plug-in type switch is available on Amazon.ca for
about $50 Canadian or on Amazon.com for about $42 US. For lights I think I
prefer the idea of the Philipps Hue light bulbs where you control the light
bulb itself instead of the switch. In addition to turning it on and off you
can control the brightness of the light and even change the colour.

Regards,
Sieghard

It was the BElkin WeMu socket, and as for why, his coffee machine makes a
loud noise when it starts up, he was attempting to shock those at home..

Jonathan,

I was with a blind chap the other day who turned on his coffee machine
whilst in my sitting room. Bearing in mind I lie in the UK, and his coffee

I will check with him, but, I believe from what he was saying that it was

With WeMo you can turn on a light from another room, or turn it off from

I've had a talking thermostat for 6 or 7 years now. It has 4 variations plus a

That's fine if you travel often but how many blind people do you know who spend
more time on the road then at home? We own a motor home and travel often but
this app isn't necessary IMHO.

  I appreciate the responses.

The internet thermostat sounds interesting, but just over a year ago, I
invested in a talking one, so I'm not ready to leap that direction.

I read about the belkin on Amazon, and it received really mixed reviews. In
fact, most of the options I read on Amazon got mixed reviews. Kind of makes
this more challenging.

Lol, maybe I'll shelf this idea for later, and purchase the simple light
timers.

It all sounds pretty cool though.

As someone else said, how many apps are truly necessary. I don't have
such an app, but I also don't have a talking thermostat either. If I
were to upgrade to an accessible thermostat, I'd definitely consider
going with a network capable thermostat along with an accessible app.
From what I could tell, it wasn't any more expensive. I also don't think
this is just for a blind person who travels a lot, and I wouldn't assume
there aren't blind travellers out there, but also for someone who leaves
their house for the day and goes into work. It would give me piece of
mind knowing I could remotely check the lights, thermostats and the like
in my house. Note that these systems aren't designed or made especially
for the blind, so there's no reason to think a blind person wouldn't get
just as much out of these accessible apps as our sighted counterparts,
who obviously also want such capabilities.

2013-01-19 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
I know this might limit things as it’s referring to home automating services
through ADT’s residential home security division but for the sake of
information I can say that at least whatever system they use in terms of
equipment and the app and pc portal they use to control their pulse system are
extremely accessible both with voiceover on an IPhone as well as with screen
reader use on a PC.
I’m able to set timing schedules for outside lights and indoor lights to come
on and turn off independently for the first time in my life (big smile). Now
if only the thing would let you know when light bulbs go out it’d be grand
(smiles).
It has other things like a thermostat as well but I too have the talking one
and thus saw no need to incorporate that into my system.
I hope that helps.
Robin

RE: Home automation

2013-01-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Traci,

I unfortunately really have to get to work so I don't have time for a long
message. However, one item that has been discussed on here quite a bit is
the Radio Thermostat from www.RadioThermostat.com. It is a WiFi enabled
thermostat which does come with a mostly accessible app. I say mostly
because the programming function is not so great, but just controlling your
thermostat from anywhere in the world where your iPhone is online either via
WiFi or data is perfect. You can see the current temperature, the target
temperature and, if you wish, you can turn up the temperature or turn it
down. If you search the archives for Radio Thermostat or even just
Thermostat you should find a bunch of messages and you can always go to
their website as well. I know some people on the list bought this at Home
Depot for $99.

A few weeks ago somebody posted a message about a new Philipps light bulb
which is sold I think in a set of 3. They are LED and expensive, but nothing
else is needed to control them. You can turn the lights on/off, dim them and
I think even change the colour. I have no idea if the app is accessible,
it's a very new product, but I believe the article mentioned that this is
sold in Apple Stores and I assume if that is so they would also have it on
their online store.

Connected appliances have been shown off at CES fpor at least 3 years now,
but I don't think anything has really come to the market yet. In fact I read
an article last week that Bosch, for example, is at this point actually
stating they are not getting into this because of a lack of a standard. Of
course this doesn't mean others won't come up with proprietary systems.

Regards,

Sieghard
