Re: Accessible home automation systems
Hi. We are contemplating a home automation system as well and were advised to take a look at Savant and Control 4. They both have Apps in the App Store, but you need the system and an account to use the App. Therefore, I don't know how VoiceOver friendly they are, despite the contractor telling us they are. Just wanted to throw some other names out there. For more information, the contractor suggested we call a Best Buy Magnolia Design Center, as they sell both of these systems and should be knowledgeable. Good luck in your search. Re: Accessible home automation systems
the one led light has a y fi booster on it to increase the si gnl within your home and they run $40 each , the smart phone door lock runs $250 and you can set codes for each person and their smartphone you can still use a key but the smart phone dooropener is on the knob on the inside of the door , so as you get close to the door it will pull the deadbolt open . this one that I know about is Quickset and there are a few others as well, so you will never be locked out of your home only if you forget your phone . RE: Accessible home automation systems
I would probably want to make sure that whatever system I look at supports Apple's home kit. Not sure how much Apple is going to push this since it was announced I think 2 years ago and I don't think there are as many devices out there as one might have thought. I also thought the new fourth generation Apple TV would have been designed as a connected home appliances hub which again at this point is not the case. I have had my Radio Thermostats for I think 2 years now, maybe going into year 3, but lights like Philipps Hue and other connected lights I still find quite prohibitively expensive if you are looking to equip an even mid-size house with say 25 to 40 bulbs, at $60 a pop you are looking at a minimum of $1,500 to $2,500, add a good quality lock, thermostat and maybe security camera and you can easily spend $3,000 to $4,000. I am at this point waiting to see what will happen in the next couple of years before I spend hundreds and possibly thousands of Dollars for a minor convenience where I might get something much better and possibly less expensive down the road. As with all technology, these types of devices will become more popular and drop in price and they are not necessarily going to be things you want to replace every 2 years. LED light bulbs, for example, have a lifespan of at least 10 years and when I do buy them I want to be sure it's what I want. Like I said, one of these Philipps connected bulbs is $60, a regular good quality LED light bulb is now available for $8 or $10 and you can probably even find some that are a bit less. Granted, having bulbs you can control from your phone, change to any colour you want and so on comes with a huge "cool factor", but the energy saving benefit you get even with the bulb that costs 80% less. Re: Accessible home automation systems
Apologies. Some of the elements are labeled, but there is more of the interface that could really use tweaking to make it truly an accessible experience. For example, it's somewhat possible to activate a scene like turning on lights and unlocking front door, but it's not exactly doable to set up this scene. Mind you, this was a few versions back. The SmartThings app I'm sure has been updated since then. I'm sure my feedback to the developers would carry more weight if more people wrote to them. I chose SmartThings because it's very integrated with a lot of systems out there, including now the Amazon Echo. Other systems such as that sold by Home Depot felt very limited in the signals they worked with, but of course this is just one guy's opinion. Mi Casa Verde was another system I considered. I believe it's possible to do more tweaking of their system via an online interface, but I generally found the hub to be more outdated. Home automation, was: WeMoR products?
Hi Carol, The WEMO app from Belkin controls electrical devices and appliances which are plugged into a WEMO switch or you can control lights if you replace the regular light switch with a Belkin WEMO light switch. There are now also some appliances like a coffee maker, air purifier and so on which apparently can be controlled directly with the app. Here is the app store link: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/wemo/id511376996?mt=8 I am very interested in this type of stuff and home automation and appliance control in general, but with Apple's new home kit in iOS 8 I am not jumping on anything right now because I think given what they announced about the partnerships with several companies during the June keynote, I am sure we will see a lot more product in this area which might work even better than what is already out there. The WEMO light switch and plug-in type switch is available on Amazon.ca for about $50 Canadian or on Amazon.com for about $42 US. For lights I think I prefer the idea of the Philipps Hue light bulbs where you control the light bulb itself instead of the switch. In addition to turning it on and off you can control the brightness of the light and even change the colour. You can put your home on a schedule—living room lights go on in the evening, kids’ TV goes off at bedtime. You can check to make sure you turned the iron off, after you’ve already left. WeMo Switch is the iPhone home remote. The Complete WeMo System. The WeMo App runs on your iPhone and controls any electronic device you plug into a WeMo Switch—if you can plug it in, you can turn it on or off with WeMo. WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion are available at major retailers. The WeMo family of products is great at automating repetitive tasks, and at allowing you to control your household in ways you’d never thought possible. The beauty of WeMo is it’s completely modular. Hello, I would like to hear from someone who has used this WeMo application before. Is it truely VoiceOver compatible, or not. I have done some research on my own and I have learned that you can actually send txt messages to the units to turn them on, but I can't find any accessibility reviews for them anywhere or for this application. I've had a talking thermostat for 6 or 7 years now. It has 4 variations plus a weekend schedule. Just because we can isn't always a good reason to do it. Re: Home automation
As someone else said, how many apps are truly necessary. I don't have such an app, but I also don't have a talking thermostat either. If I were to upgrade to an accessible thermostat, I'd definitely consider going with a network capable thermostat along with an accessible app. From what I could tell, it wasn't any more expensive. I also don't think this is just for a blind person who travels a lot, and I wouldn't assume there aren't blind travellers out there, but also for someone who leaves their house for the day and goes into work. It would give me piece of mind knowing I could remotely check the lights, thermostats and the like in my house. Note that these systems aren't designed or made especially for the blind, so there's no reason to think a blind person wouldn't get just as much out of these accessible apps as our sighted counterparts, who obviously also want such capabilities. Re: Home automation
Hi, I know this might limit things as it’s referring to home automating services through ADT’s residential home security division but for the sake of information I can say that at least whatever system they use in terms of equipment and the app and pc portal they use to control their pulse system are extremely accessible both with voiceover on an IPhone as well as with screen reader use on a PC. I’m able to set timing schedules for outside lights and indoor lights to come on and turn off independently for the first time in my life (big smile). Now if only the thing would let you know when light bulbs go out it’d be grand (smiles). It has other things like a thermostat as well but I too have the talking one and thus saw no need to incorporate that into my system. I hope that helps. RE: Home automation
Hi Traci, I unfortunately really have to get to work so I don't have time for a long message. However, one item that has been discussed on here quite a bit is the Radio Thermostat from www.RadioThermostat.com. It is a WiFi enabled thermostat which does come with a mostly accessible app. I say mostly because the programming function is not so great, but just controlling your thermostat from anywhere in the world where your iPhone is online either via WiFi or data is perfect. You can see the current temperature, the target temperature and, if you wish, you can turn up the temperature or turn it down. If you search the archives for Radio Thermostat or even just Thermostat you should find a bunch of messages and you can always go to their website as well. I know some people on the list bought this at Home Depot for $99. A few weeks ago somebody posted a message about a new Philipps light bulb which is sold I think in a set of 3. They are LED and expensive, but nothing else is needed to control them. You can turn the lights on/off, dim them and I think even change the colour. I have no idea if the app is accessible, it's a very new product, but I believe the article mentioned that this is sold in Apple Stores and I assume if that is so they would also have it on their online store. Connected appliances have been shown off at CES fpor at least 3 years now, but I don't think anything has really come to the market yet. In fact I read an article last week that Bosch, for example, is at this point actually stating they are not getting into this because of a lack of a standard. Of course this doesn't mean others won't come up with proprietary systems. Here's the link to the app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wemo/id511376996?mt=8 And, here's the itunes description: Description App controls the WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion. The iPhone home remote. Control stuff in your home - from anywhere. Introducing WeMo. Belkin's new WeMo system is a family of simple, ingenious products that use your iPhone and your home Wi-Fi(r) network to connect you to the things and people you love. WeMo is your home at your fingertips. WeMo can control just about anything. With WeMo you can turn on a light from another room, or turn it off from across town. You can put your home on a schedule-living room lights go on in the evening, kids' TV goes off at bedtime. You can check to make sure you turned the iron off, after you've already left. WeMo Switch is the iPhone home remote. The Complete WeMo System. The WeMo App runs on your iPhone and controls any electronic device you plug into a WeMo Switch-if you can plug it in, you can turn it on or off with WeMo. And WeMo Motion lets you control the devices when motion is detected. Have the floor lamp go on when you enter the living room, and turn off when you leave. WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion are available at major retailers. The WeMo family of products is great at automating repetitive tasks, and at allowing you to control your household in ways you'd never thought possible. The beauty of WeMo is it's completely modular. You can control as much or as little of your home as you like. Control one light, one room, or the whole house. There's no limit to what WeMo can do. If you can think of it, you can probably do it with WeMo. WeMo is your home at your fingertips. Re: Home automation
What a great thread. I knew someone who had tried WeMo some time back who said the app had significant accessibility issues. This info is not particularly current by app standards, so it would be great to hear from anyone who's had a play recently.
