How to Share Your iCloud Storage With a Friend or Family Member, Simple Help
Posted: 08 April 2022 06:56 PM PDT

This step by step guide shows you how to give permission to a friend or
family member to share your iCloud Drive storage space so they can save and
access their own files on it.
Here's a scenario for you - you've got an iCloud+ account (a paid iCloud
subscription) and your friend doesn't. They're running low on their free 5GB
of iCloud storage space and desperately needs more (and probably getting
constant emails from Apple telling them their iCloud storage is almost
full). Why not share some of your extra space with them? Although Apple
refers to this as "Family Sharing" - there's absolutely no reason you can't
share your iCloud storage with a friend, roommate, co-worker or other
acquaintance.

Following the steps outlined below you'll be able to grant permission for a
friend, roommate, co-worker OR family member to use your iCloud storage
space to save their own photos and data. It's very important to note that
no, they will not be able to access your iCloud data and you will not be
able to access theirs.

>From the official Family Sharing guide by Apple,
Everyone's personal files and preferences stay private. When you share
iCloud+, family members can't see each others' photos, files, or documents.

For the sake of this guide we're going to use an iPhone to complete all of
the required steps. You can do this on an iPad and the steps will be almost
identical. You can also do it on your Mac via the Family Sharing icon in the
System Preferences and while though steps are quite different, you should
still be able to follow along.
1. The first step is to setup Family Sharing itself. This is an Apple
feature/service that allows you to share various services and subscriptions
with "family" members (remember - that can include friends, roommates,
co-workers etc). Although there are lots of things you can share, we're only
going to cover iCloud storage - feel free to check out all the other options
and settings once you're done.

2. Start out by tapping the Settings icon.

3. Select your Profile (directly below the word Settings).

4. Choose Family Sharing from the list of options.

5. Tap the + Add Member link.

6. A Invite People to Your Family window will appear - select the
Invite People button inside of that window.

7. If the person is right next to you with an iPhone/iPad you can use
AirDrop to send the "invitation" link, otherwise tap the Mail icon.

8. Enter the email address of the person you want to allow to use your
iCloud storage space, and give the email a subject (or enter a short
message) so they know why you're sending a long and slightly strange looking
link.

9. When the person you invite opens the link in the email they'll be
invited to join your "family" - tell them to tap the Join Family button.

10. Then they just have to tap the Done button and that's it - they
don't need to do anything else.

11. Now that your friend is a member of your "family", you can share
your iCloud storage with them. Once again open your iPhone/iPad Settings and
select your Profile.

12. Choose Family Sharing again.

13. This time scroll down to the MORE TO SHARE section and select the
iCloud+ option.

14. When prompted, tap the Share iCloud+ With Family button.

15. That's it. Tap the Close button.

16. Now return to Family Sharing - this time you'll see a new section
titled SHARED WITH YOUR FAMILY and inside of it an item named iCloud+ -
select it.

17. From here you'll see a list of the people using your iCloud storage
(iCloud+) and how much space each person is using.

18. After you've given your friend permission to use your iCloud
storage, they can return to their iCloud settings and see that the amount of
usable storage space has increased to whatever your plan includes. You're a
good friend!

19. In addition to via your iPhone/iPad, you can manage friends (users)
via the System Preferences on a Mac. I'm not sure why you can't manage users
via the web, for now it's via iOS and macOS only.

While you're here, why not check out our other iPhone and iPad tips, tricks
and tutorials? :)

Hi, Everyone.
I help my Mom manage her iphone--backups, iCloud payments, etc. I
usually fix stuff when I go to visit. She told me this morning while
we talked on the phone that she changed her credit card, which means
I'll need to change the info associated with her Apple ID so she can
keep paying for iCloud storage. Do I need to do that on her physical
iPhone, or can I manage it from here in iTunes if I have her info?

Thanks,
Dani

they should definitely increase it, 5 gb is nothing! mine reached the limit
ages ago and there is an annoying message saying the phone couldn't be
backed up because there is no space. 50 gb is a good amount of space to
offer.

Apple, everyone needs more free iCloud storage
By Chris Welch

During yesterday's education-focused event that saw the introduction of a
new iPad, Apple executive Greg Joswiak revealed that the company is
upgrading the amount of free iCloud storage given to students. Previously,
managed student accounts had the same 5GB as regular consumers, but now,

Apple is raising that limit to a much more spacious 200GB. This applies to
students who have Apple IDs provided and administered by their school.

That's a great thing! Apple is displaying a focused, determined approach to
providing educators with powerful new hardware and improved classroom
software and services. 200GB is an enormous amount of runway for
collaboration and creation among students.
But why shouldn't people shelling out hundreds of dollars for an iPhone or
iPad have a similar, worry-free chunk of storage in the cloud for their
photos, documents, message history, and other precious content? Apple
charges consumers $2.99 per month for that same 200GB allotment (which can
be shared between family members), so you'd be paying just shy of $36
annually. That's not much, but it continues to feel like ill-disguised penny
pinching from the world's biggest and richest tech company. In January, John
Gruber said the included allotment of 5GB "seems ridiculous" when it comes
alongside a 64GB device. If you've got a 256GB iPhone or 512GB iPad, it
becomes even more unreasonable.

seven years ago.
The 5GB limit has been in place since Apple unveiled iCloud at WWDC 2011.
It's been almost seven years! That's too long to be stuck in place, and it's
reminiscent of the way Apple dragged its feet in moving away from 16GB
iPhones. It eventually happened, but long after many of us had determined
16GB to be an unworkable amount of space.
A lot of people (most?) buy the base-level iPhone, so Apple's decision on
how much storage goes inside is a critical choice. And the same holds true
for iCloud; I'd wager that most customers never upgrade from the free tier.
They just won't give in, whether it's out of principle or because they're
sensibly trying to avoid yet another monthly charge in their lives.
5GB makes things way more difficult for those people than they should be.
Fundamental tasks like backing up your device become cumbersome chores. If
you never upgrade, you're likely going to have a worse time using an iPhone.
Full stop. It surprises me that Apple continues to let that fly.
Also disappointing is that the paid tiers have continued to increase in
capacity over time, but the free allotment hasn't budged even once.
And despite Apple's best efforts (like the video above) to explain how you
can manage iCloud, customers are inevitably confused, frustrated, and
annoyed when they hit the ceiling. It usually happens well before they
approach the limits of their iPhone or iPad's physical storage, and that
disconnect between the two only makes things more irritating.

The most effective ad that Google has ever made for Google Photos was aimed
at the dread of seeing Apple's "not enough storage" message pop up on your
iPhone's screen. It works because it's a thing that millions of people have
experienced. Joanna Stern likens the message to a ransom note; you'd better
pay up if you want to keep all that data safe.
Apple's ideal scenario involves you continuing through those prompts and
upgrading to a higher tier of monthly iCloud space in seconds. And sure,
maybe that's an inevitability if you're storing years of photos in the
cloud. Apple has no obligation to give you a free digital locker for
everything. Buying an expensive gadget doesn't somehow make us entitled to
that. But people are hitting this wall way, way too soon in their experience
with an iPhone or iPad.
For context, let's look at what you get on Android:
Google: 15GB of free cloud storage with Google Drive, unlimited photo backup
with Google Photos at "optimized" quality. 100GB for $1.99 / month, 1TB for
$9.99 / month, or 10TB for $99.99 / month.
Samsung: Samsung Cloud, the iCloud equivalent for Galaxy S and Note
smartphones, also offers 15GB of storage to start out. 50GB is $0.99 /
month, and 200GB matches Apple's monthly price of $2.99.

So 15GB is the baseline for Apple's competitors. That still feels
insufficient, but it's a big enough increase to make a difference when it
might count.
I'm hopeful yesterday's announcement for schools was a precursor to an
increase in iCloud storage for everyone at WWDC in June. Apple is long
overdue to raise it up to an

overdue to raise it up to an amount that's actually helpful for the people
storing their lives and data on an iPhone. 200GB is certainly overkill for
most. At the bare minimum, I think Apple should match the competition. But
I'd love to see the company increase free iCloud storage to 50GB, which
currently costs $0.99 / month. That would be a substantial improvement and
help make device backups and putting more photos in the cloud much

Go to the first item in Settings where it says your name followed by "Apple Id,
iCloud, iTunes and App Store".
Double tap on Payment and Shipping
Double tap your current payment method, it will most likely say Mastercard, a
bunch of bullets and the last 4 digits of your card.
You will most likely be asked for your iPhone unlock PIN, after you enter it
you can edit your first name, last name, credit card number, expiry date, CVV,
phone number and billing address.
If all you have to do is put in a different card number just tap on the card
number field and enter your new card number. I don't think you have to specify
whether it's a Visa or Mastercard, it will recognize this automatically.
Then enter the expiry date and CV code of your new card, once you are done
double tap on "Save' at the top left corner and it's done.

Hi I had to get A new credit card.

So I have to replace my one that was paying for my i Cloud storage on my iPhone.

So how do I once I tap on my name and get to where it says the name of the card
that I am currently using.

How then do I remove that card and replace it with the new one?

The card that I am currently using is A master card.

And the new card is A visa so I need to change that as well.

So how do you make those changes on the phone or is it easier to do it on the
computer?

If it is easier to do it on the computer then where do you go and make thos
same changes?

Nothing else has changed just my payment method.

So look for assistance with this.

Gigabyte, $0.99 a month".
If you swipe right you see upgrade options for the 200 Gigabyte a month, 1
Terabyte and 2 Terabyte a month plans, after that you get to "Downgrade Option".
Voiceover doesn't say this is a button or link, but if you double tap on
downgrade option you will be asked to sign in with your password, once you do
you have the option to select the 5 Gigabyte free option, tap on Done at the
top and that should do it. I didn't go through with it, but I assume it may ask
you to confirm you want to do this and of course if you use more than 5
Gigabyte some of that data will be deleted/lost.

Sieghard

Subject: How do I stop payment for iCloud storage

Hello everyone,

I pay about a dollar each month, for more iCloud storage. But I don't really
have use for it anymore.

So what do I need to do, in order to stop the 1 dollar payment from coming out
of my account?

Yes, I do realize it is only a dollar. But why spend it, if I do not need the
storage anymore?

Thank you,

Terri

If you have multiple devices on the same account, or if you have an
older device's backup that is still in iCloud, that could take up a
lot of storage as well. For instance, if you have the current iPhone, got it
figured out. It was right there in the ICloud control panel.

an iPhone 6 or 6S, and an iPad all backed up to the same account, then
no wonder you don't have much available space.

Re: This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available!

2017-01-08 Thread Kelly Pierce
If you have backed up to iCloud before with another device, this
device has a full backup in iCloud. I recently bought an iPhone 7.
After installing the backup in iCloud and backing up to iCloud with my
new 7 for a couple of months, I was getting the message that I was
running out of icloud storage. I eventually learned that a separate
icloud backup is created. for every device on which you have used
your Apple ID. I realized I had a backup of my iPhone 5 and a backup
of my friend's 5S that I tried out for a few weeks. At this point, I
had sold my iPhone 5 and my friend had his 5S back. When I deleted
all the backups except for the backup named quote this i Phone closed
quote, I had 2.5 gigs of storage back, which caused me to cancel the
extra icloud storage plan I subscribed to until I figured out the
problem.

Hello Folks,

I have never used iCloud to back up my iPhone in the past. When I tried
to do an iCloud back up today, I got this message: “This iPhone cannot
be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available. When
I checked the available space I Have I found that it is 4.9 GB. I
turned off all items to be backed up to the iCloud accept notes and
contacts. However, I still got the same error message. It can’t be
possible that my contacts and notes are more than 4.9 GB. Therefore I
think there must be some problem I am not aware of.

Did any of you ever encounter such a problem backing up to iCloud? If
so, how did you solve this problem?

I appreciate your help or suggestions.

Cheers,

Cris

Perhaps you have your music and app data being backed up as well.

I would check to see.

Oh, I would definitely shut off the e-mail back up, as that can take up quite a
bit of space, especially if you have it set to leave messages on the server.

Godwin,

You may have enabled backing up something which you didn't have enabled
before, for example Podcasts or something like that. Have you taken pictures
or video? If you turn on Photostream it may take up a lot of storage as
well. More and more developers enable iCloud backups, so just take a look
and see if you recently bought any new apps which may use iCloud or, as I
said, you enabled backing up to iCloud in one of your apps.

RE: ICloud Storage

2012-07-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Godwin,

Now that you mention it, I think you maybe correct regarding Photostream not
counting towards your 5 GB limit and I know apps certainly don't, either.
However, documents and app data does, so I'd maybe check in Settings,
General and Usage to see if anything stands out in terms of how much
space the various apps take up. All I can suggest is that maybe to try and
turn off some stuff like Documents and see if that makes a difference.

Good luck,

Sieghard

I turned photo streaming and documents off, but I still get the message no
enough storage.

Thanks,

Good luck,

Sieghard

I recently bought a lot of apps. Photo streaming, book marks and documents
are what I've enabled in my iCloud. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm made to
understand that photo streaming does not affect the 5 Gb free storage. I
have 4.2 GB free space.

What should I do?

With best regards,

Godwin

Sieghard

2012-07-31 Thread Vicki Meizinger
I have 8,00 songsin teh cloud. I thought that I would only have to
store some in the iphone when I downloaded them. They say I have 500
songs in the phone, or maybe in my computer. Doesn't seem right to me.
Does anyone understand this?
