not to mention, Canadians can join Bookshare too.
Then there's iBooks, Kindle, Voice Dream Reader, etc. We've never had
access to so many books!

CNIB Digital Library, find a boolk you want to listen to (you can do this
on a computer or with Safari on the iPhone) and then tell it to use
Direct to Player instead of downloading it, then you open the Direct to

Hi Sieghard,

I don't see any, and can't really thinhk of any besides possibly
spelling issues and other text formatting. I would be stunned if Siri
had any problems, affter all, people with their region set to United
States will travel around the world and want to use Siri. Similarly,
the developer guide for language/region doesn't mention anything that
sounds too vital
https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPInternational/SpecifyingPreferences/SpecifyingPreferences.html
I haven't had any issues myself, of course.
Sorry not to have been more conclusive, I would be interested in
anyone else's experiences.

You log in to the CNIB Digital Library, find a boolk you want to listen to (you

Hi Aman,

Can you think of any disadvantages with respect to setting your region to
United States, e.g. will it have an impact on SIRI not finding things etc.?

Hi,
I think the News app is more or less an RSS reader with Apple spying
built in. It's quite a nice and accessible reader, I like it, but I
don't see anything that can't be gotten elsewhere fairly comfortably.
Note that it might be more worth-while for us because it is very
accessible both with braille and speech. Having said that, and if you
don't mind any information sharing issues, you can get the news app
fairly easily despite not being in the United States. I have tried the
app in Canada without difficulties. To get it, use the instructions at
http://www.cultofmac.com/328592/how-to-get-ios-9s-news-app-outside-the-u-s/
The article mentions the beta, but this works fine on iOS 9's final
version on my 5S. Basically, the instructions are to go to settings,
general, region/language, and then, under the region and formats
heading, tap the button to select your region. tap "united states",
then done, then reboot the phone. The news app should show up on the
home screen. Obviously, you'll be stuck with US regional defaults if
you do this, but these are not significant, in my view.
I hope all that is of use.

RE: IOS 9 and big brotherly attitude of Apple

2015-09-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ketan,

You are not alone, the News app isn’t even available in Canada and we are right
next door to The mighty United States of Apple.

Furthermore, Apple for some reason which of course can’t have anything at all
to do with money, decided that Canadian carriers should charge their customers
77% more for an iPhone on contract than in the States. The American Dollar
currently is worth about 35% more than the Canadian Dollar, i.e. it takes 1.35
canadian Dollars to buy one American Dollar. For example, an iPhone 6S 64 Gb,
if I interpret this correctly, costs $299 on contract in the States. Based on
the exchange rate, said phone should cost approx. $400 or just over here in
Canada. However, in order to get it Canadians have to plunk down $530 for the
phone with 2-year contract.

Interestingly enough, if I buy a phone outright from Apple, the price is very
close to the US price by the time I factor in the normal exchange.

It is definitely interesting how often features which Apple touts as extremely
awesome are also extremely limited in their availability.

Regards,

Sieghard

The benefits of the news app can be obtained through an RSS app like
Lire. iTunes Radio had an algorithm inferior to that of Pandora.
with Apple Music, the selection is inferior to that of Spotify. Apple
Music is available in 100 countries though.

Re: IOS 9 and big brotherly attitude of Apple

2015-09-19 Thread Aman Singer
Hi,
I think the News app is more or less an RSS reader with Apple spying

We haven't got the News app either in the UK, unless we set language to US. I
don't want to do that so will do without as there are plenty of other sources
for the news for the moment.

  Hi Ketan,

You are not alone, the News app isn’t even available in Canada and we are
right next door to The mighty United States of Apple.

It is definitely interesting how often features which Apple touts as
extremely awesome are also extremely limited in their availability.

Here in Mexico, for instance, with the exchange rate being 17 Mexican
Pesos in a US dollar, an IPhone 5S or above, ends up costing an
astounding $1 Mexican! thus here in Mexico, either no choice but to
switch to the competition like I did, or stick with older models like 4S
etc.

I am sure this has more to do with agreements with the media outlets for legal
and copyright complications than just carelessness from Apple. Apple has no
right to give its users access to copy right material without signing
agreements with the providers of this material. That is why the service is
available in some countries and in some languages and not in others.
