Re: Native maps question?

2017-03-10 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello Mark,

The strange thing is that I can flick up on an entry and choose remove. Despite
deleting all iCloud backups they will reappear for no obvious reason.

Thanks.

Malcolm.

RE: Native maps question?

2017-03-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Malcolm,

The very unsatisfying answer to your question is that you cannot manually
remove them. It's Apple's way of supposedly making your life easier.

More often than not, they are good at this sort of thing but, for those of us
who like things a certain way, it can, indeed, be a bit frustrating.

Maps question

2014-06-16 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.

I know that if I want to use iOS maps to find a route with bus directions, I
will have to download a third party app. But I cannot find the area in Maps
where it prompts me to download one from a list and connects directly to
those apps.

Help appreciated.

2014-06-16 Thread David Chittenden
Apple Maps does not prompt you to download any other maps app. If you download
one of the maps apps that Apple Maps connects with, Apple Maps then knows the
app is on your iDevice and will ask you if you wish to have that app started
with the current information preloaded.

Re: Maps question

2014-06-16 Thread Grant Hardy
You are correct in that Apple Maps doesn't prompt you to download any specific
app, but there's definitely a large list of third party apps that it recommends
to you even if they aren't on your phone. When you request transit directions,
you're taken to a screen with two sections: installed apps and from the App
Store. The latter section does indeed allow you to download any of the
recommended apps that you don't currently have on your device.

North up would show you the map with the direction of north being on top or

RE: Google Maps; was: Apple Maps Question.

2014-02-11 Thread Richard Turner
You might very well get similar results with an external GPS and the Touch
if Google saves the entire route and as you say, you don't stray off route.

My first iPod was the 3rd generation and I bought a Dual Electronics GPS
receiver and battery pack. I was able to use Navigon with that set up quite
effectively since Navigon stores the maps on your device.

That was before Google Maps was available or at least before it was as good
as it is now.

It would certainly be worth a try if anyone has that combination.

Speaking of spoken turn by turn directions, I loaded a route into my phone
the other day using Google Maps. I was at home and on Wi-Fi when I did it.
I forgot that cellular data was turned off and began my 30 minute trip. I
had spoken turn by turn directions for the entire trip. I discovered that
data was off when I went to create a new route to another destination and
was told to turn data on.

I already knew that Google loaded a map of the requested route into the
device but didn't think that the audio for that trip would be loaded. It
was a very pleasant surprise indeed. I'm also guessing that this would work
as long as you don't go too far off of the planned route.

Now, this has me curious. If I had an iPod touch with an external gps
receiver, would I have the same result? Someone might try it some time to
find out.

Subject: Apple Maps Question.

Hi Folks:

Has anyone had any luck with voice guidance using Apple maps in walking mode?
If so, are there specific settings that I need to attend too? Also, is it true
that the 5S will automatically choose the correct mode whether driving or
walking?

Thanks all over the place gang.

By voice guidance, do you mean turn by turn directions?

I have used Apple Maps quite a bit to read off addresses as I'm walking or
 using public transportation.

Maps question

2013-08-12 Thread Shane clark
Hi,
I went to the maps app on my 4S and typed in a city. Somehow or other, the
compass came up, and that had never happened before. I tapped on tracking, and
heard tracking on, then I tapped again, and heard tracking on with headings.
What does this mean, and why would the compass come up?
Thanks.
