RE: Chrome Cast [was "Re: A couple of iPhone questions"]

2017-10-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
All the information is on the Sonos website. It’s basically exactly identical
to a Play 1 but it has the microphones which allow you to speak to it after you
have set up Amazon Alexa. You first have to figure out if Amazon Alexa is
available which I am pretty sure it is not officially and if you can get around
this and use it anyways. I know here in Canada people do use it even though
even here it is not yet officially available. Apparently it might be coming
soon here, but who knows.
At some point during 2018 Sonos will add/enable the Google Assistant as well
and this might be more widely available, it is already here in Canada even
though Google came out way later with it than Amazon did with the Echo/Alexa.
In the US the Sonos 1 costs the same as a Play 1 and I assume it may replace
the Play 1 (if you don’t want voice assistants you just don’t have to set it
up) so that is $199 USD.
Here in Canada it is available now (as of October 24) and it costs $249 here
which is pretty much the exchange rate difference which currently is about
$1.20 CAD for 1 USD, multiply $200 by $1.20 and you get $240 so it’s pretty
close.

Sonos 1. I wonder when wil it be available here in SA and what the price would

Certainly true, but it depends on what you want to accomplish, whether you have
2 or 3 stereos kicking around (I guess you could buy a bunch of powered
computer speakers), how much convenience you want and ultimately what your
budget allows.
If you have two systems you really like then the Chromecast method is worth
considering and may work perfectly well for you.
If you want to upgrade to something more modern, something which is expandable
and now with the Sonos 1 speaker something which gives you access to several
voice assistants (when they are done with what they are doing) then Sonos is
still the system of choice in my opinion. With Sonos you also don’t use your
phone’s resources, you simply use the phone and Sonos app as a remote control.
You get access to just about every music service there is including Apple Music
and the sound quality is awesome.
The new Sonos 1 speaker is available now and fully supports Alexa, the Google
Assistant will be added I think in early 2018 and I assume they will also
integrate Cortana since Microsoft certainly is going the third-party route.
SIRI will take longer, but it

the voice assistants will not work here because they require a speaker with
microphones and this is simply a hardware constraint. I also assume that the
Sonos 1 is just the start and that a Sonos 3 and Sonos 5 or whatever they will
be called are following to give customers the full choice of speaker quality
and still include voice assistants. In some cases I have bought new technology
when it comes out, but I’m glad I was reluctant to jump onto the smart speaker
train because I’d kick myself if I had bought a Amazon Echo and/or Google Home
speaker where now I can buy a Sonos 1 which can do them all.
The Sonos 1 by the way also supports Airplay 2 so even if you already have a
bunch of older equipment adding one of them allows you to Airplay to any of
your Sonos speakers since that is how Sonos works.

Sieghard

Fanus, as for why they make an audio and a video version it is simple. The

Exactly so, Sieghard.. In my case, I have some excellent equipment, although it
is certainly not new, including two really good pair of floorstanding speakers
which offer me outstanding sound with the power amps that I still have. I have
not heard Sonos speakers. But I have yet to hear any smaller speaker that comes
close to the output and Fidelity I can get from my floorstanding speakers and
associated equipment. Maybe if we move in a few years to a smaller place, where
space is a much bigger deal than it is for us right now, I will revisit the
issue. I admit to being intrigued by what the HomePods are going to offer, as
well as what the new Google Home Max speaker might offer. I'm thinking of
adjusting their output to room acoustics, something my old stuff certainly
cannot do. I'm really not all that excited about voice assistant speakers yet.
We do have an echo, we got it when it was first available as part of a beta
thing. It's sound is not good. But it stands in the kitchen and has some uses,
such as hands-free timer setting, getting recipes, the weather forecast and
other things that don't demand good Fidelity. I guess I'm just not into the
assistant thing.

Hi Fanus,
The Chromecast audio does require AC power connection. You configure it in the
google Home app. You can have a configuration for each Chromecast- connected
device, such as two stereos. So you can send your audio to one, the other one,
or both, by setting up a home group. Configuring is totally accessible.

You are right. You do need two Chromecasts. But the chrome cast audio cost
something like $30, maybe less if you find a deal. That's still way cheaper
than spending a bunch of money on Sonos speakers, for example

OK, I think I've understood all I need to regarding how people can make
the ChromeCast work, and that has helped me to realise that I may havfe

interested in the music. I was thinking it would deal with other file
types as well as films.

I have a ChromeCast Audio which has the 3MM audio jack on it. You'd connect it
to a pair of audio speakers or anything else that takes audio input. It looks
like it costs $35, but I'm pretty sure I got it on sale for $25 last Christmas.

There's the original ChromeCast which has an HDMI connector on it. I don't have
this device, but it looks like it also costs $35.

Finally, there's the ChromeCast Ultra which has an HDMI connector and supports
4K video. I also have one of these hooked to my home theater receiver.

One thing I should have mentioned, is that once you start the streaming to your
ChromeCast device, your iPhone is taken out of the loop and is no longer
needed. This is nice since you're no longer using your smart phone resources.
You can go back into the app your casting though and cancel the casting.

There's an app on Android called Google Home that allows you to control your
ChromeCast devices. It looks like you have the same thing in the App Store at
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-home/id680819774?mt=8

When casting from an app, only the audio or video from that app is sent over to
your ChromeCast. Your TTS is not sent over. There is an option in Google Home
to mirror the audio from your smart phone though, and if you use this feature
then all of the audio on your phone is sent over to the ChromeCast including
the TTS.

Basically, you buy a Chrome Cast device which you add to your wifi network and
plug into the audio input of a device, such as to a home theater system with
HDMI or powered external speakers with a 3MM jack. Now you find an app that
supports Chrome Cast and double tap the cast button and choose your

Hi Mary,

If you have two traditional stereos which are not in any way connected or
working on any wireless how can one Chromecast connected to one stereo provide
the same sound on another stereo? I can see how if you had two Chromecasts and
one was connected to each stereo that maybe you can group them, but it is my
understanding that the Chromecast needs to be physically connected to the
stereo where you are streaming/casting the music.

Fanus, as for why they make an audio and a video version it is simple. The
audio only Chromecast plugs into a 3.5mm port so you can connect it to any
powered speaker which has a 3.5mm input port and you can easily connect it to
an older analogue stereo with a 3.5mm to RCA cable. The video version, either
the regular Chromecast or the Chromecast Ultra which supports 4K streaming only
have HDMI ports so unless you have a newer receiver with HDMI inputs this one
wouldn’t work for just music/audio on a system where HDMI is not available.

There is an option in Google Home
to mirror the audio from your smart phone though, and if you use this feature
then all of the audio on your phone is sent over to the ChromeCast including
the TTS.

RE: Chrome Cast [was "Re: A couple of iPhone questions"]

2017-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Chromecast don't have any memory, they are strictly streaming devices but
as Christopher pointed out, they work differewntly from Airplay, for example,
since once you start streaming via your Chromecast it takes over that stream.
For example, if you have a regular Chromecast or a 4K capable Chromecast Ultra
connected to your TV and you have Netflix on your iPhone, you can pick a movie
or show in the app on your phone, send it to the Chromecast and at that point
the Chromecast which is of course connected to your WiFi streams the content
and you could actually completely turn off your iPhone and the movie would
still continue to play/stream.
You can not save any music or other media to a Chromecast.

Sieghard

In the calendar you can go and set alarms to notify you at a time such as two
hours before the appointment. If you are getting siri to put appointments in
the calendar, you still have to go back in the calendar and set up the alarms

If not, check your mute switch.

Hi everyone! Hope you all are doing well, I have a couple of iPhone questions
which I hope somebody can answer, when you put a appointment or schedule
something in your calendar, does it give you any notification or sound when
it's time to remind you? When I tried to put something in my calendar, I got no
sound or notification to let me know that there was something scheduled there.
Also does anybody know if Chromecast can be used by people who are blind or
visually impaired?
