It has been doing this forever in Enhanced Samantha as well, at least I am
pretty sure it did this in iOS 11 and iOS 12.

I've not ever heard the issue with defeat with any voice, until I read back
that sentence with Tom Enhanced. If you read the word by itself, it pronounces
it correctly, but in a sentence it said defeeturing. Very stupid.
GPS seems to be a new thing with various voices so I think it came with iOS 13.
You can go into the VoiceOver Speech, Pronunciations and add it in with the
substitution G P S, and make sure it is set to all voices.
That fixed it for me; but it shouldn't have said it that way to begin with of
course.

For me in the Blindfold games the word re-sume is pronounced as resume—like

Re: Another Weird Pronunciation Issue

2019-11-10 Thread Richard Turner
Good fine Alan.
That means it is not a Voice Dream Reader issue.
I just checked and yes any superscript number is read as to the power of.
I suspect in books where that is used, or the m-dash, iOS 13 is pronouncing
them differently.

I switched to the British Siri Male voice on the language rotor and it did not
say to the power of on the memory numbers on the Apple Store.
Also, when I switch to the Irish Siri voice even though the language is US
English, no to the power of.
So, it is only with US voices.
I'm going to send this to Winston with Voice Dream as well.

The "to the power of" issue happens in most books for me. Usually it is
pronounced where there is an em dash (this symbol —) or certain types of
quotation marks. I haven't encountered this in Safari or other apps, just in
VoiceDream. I am noticing the other pronunciation issues described, however.

Thanks. Are you having the issue where Voiceover sometimes pronounces certain
punctuation as "to the power of"? It seems to happen with certain types of
quotation marks and hyphens.

RE: Another Weird Pronunciation Issue

2019-11-10 Thread Cris Ali
Isn’t the pronunciation of the iOS voices provided by the Vocalizer? So, I
wonder if contacting the vocalizer company could help in fixing these problems
in the future releases of iOS.
Have anyone tried to contact the maker of vocalizer regarding such matters?
Just curious.

Regards,

Cris

I have also found some weird pronunciations. I do get gun as g u n when I am
reading in safari, and I just put it in a note and got the g u n.

For me in the Blindfold games the word re-sume is pronounced as resume—like
what you do to find a job. It does it in notes, too. Also in the games the word
exposed is pronounced as ex-posed with the emphasis on the “ex.” It wasn’t like
this before 13.2. I am using Samantha the regular.

Very strange!

I think this pronunciation thing has to do with what voice you are using
because using the Alex voice I am not having nearly as many problems as you
guys are. Gun is pronounced correctly and object is being pronounced correctly.
I have a little problem with this months but it is not really that consistent
and I don’t use the date that much.

RE: Another Weird Pronunciation Issue

2019-11-10 Thread Richard Turner
OK, good to know.
Any particular book where that punctuation weirdness happens?

I almost always use Amy from Ivona with Voice Dream, which is the British
female voice, so maybe this too is an American English voice issue?

RE: Another Weird Pronunciation Issue

2019-11-10 Thread Richard Turner
For me, the issue with the word gun, is not isolated to Voice Dream Reader.
It is anywhere using US English voices.
I just tested it in the Notes app using Tom Enhanced and the word gun is
pronounced g u n.

This was on my Work phone running iOS 13.2.2.

RE: Another Weird Pronunciation Issue

2019-11-09 Thread Alan Lemly
Kelby,

I got that to the power of when reading a Bookshare book with Voice Dream
Reader using Samantha enhanced under iOS 13.2. I was never able to figure out
what text was causing the "to the power of" words to be spoken since those
words weren't present. When I switched to another voice in voice Dream, the
problem seemed not nearly as bad although that might have been due to the
absence of the offending punctuation in that section.

Thanks for identifying the source of the strange pronunciation.

Alan Lemly

Thanks. Are you having the issue where Voiceover sometimes pronounces certain
punctuation as "to the power of"? It seems to happen with certain types of
quotation marks and hyphens.

I just did that and now gun is said correctly.

This for sure started with iOS 13.

RE: Another Weird Pronunciation Issue

2019-11-09 Thread Richard Turner
I haven’t yet had punctuation spoken that way.
I wonder if it is when the source used “smart quotes” or “Smart Punctuation”
which are the pretty graphical punctuation marks that screw up most screen
readers.
I always turn those off in Word on my computer and in Keyboard settings on my
Apple devices.
