With all these chimes I tend to wonder how much battery your using if you let
this run for any amount of time.

I have to put in another plug for Big Ben. I am rather picky about sound
quality, and this is the best for real Westminster chimes from Big Ben itself.

Here is a description from their web site:

 « Big Ben
Anglophiles of the world, rejoice. Now you can get the time of day in style with
a fully functional miniaturised Big Ben on your iPhone or iPad. Britannia
rules.
A throwback to a more innocent time.
Back in the 1980s, an idealistic young developer with too much time on his hands
created a revolutionary program for the fledgling Apple Macintosh platform. It
simulated
a famous Westminster clock tower in 256 glorious shades of grey. Those being
simpler
days, the Mac community gasped in awe at this ticking, tocking, bonging marvel
and
it was greeted with a level of enthusiasm not seen since the invention of
penicillin.
The developer's name was Riccardo Ettore and the software was snappily titled
Big Ben
. Today, we're pleased to offer you a revamped, rather more colourful
incarnation
- updated for the 21st century and ported to a magical
device that's considerably easier to carry around than a Macintosh SE 30.
Big Ben
for iOS puts one of London's most cherished timekeeping landmarks right in your
pocket, replete with authentic Westminster chimes that ring out on the hour, on
the
half hour and on the quarter hour.
That's not all: if you enjoy tweaking things to your liking, you'll be pleased
to
learn we included some additional options. You can switch on a digital display
and
/ or a hand that ticks away the seconds - features that they neglected to
include
when they built the real McCoy that's towered over the houses of parliament for
the
past 150 years.
G'wan, treat yourself - you know you want to, really. It's a daft bit of fun and
it'll only set you back a modest 59 pennies, luv.

You cannot set it to not chime at certain periods, but if you go into the

morning until 11 at night with the chimes going off four times an hour and
I see no battery problems. On top of this I listen to lots of baseball and
football on my phones.

No, No No.
Westminster chimes is a different app than Big Ben.
Westminster Chimes is an electronic imitation of the Big Ben chimes.
The Big Ben app, and it is just called Big Ben, is a professional recording of
Big Ben itself.
I just heard back from the developer to confirm he did a professional recording
and the YouTube sample is not of his app, but thanks to Cawal's comment about a

Thanks to your comment about YouTube, the developer is going to put up his own

Since you brought up the whole YouTube thing, could you send me the YouTube

I did not hear before I bought, I trusted the description of the app. I have

Yes, go into the settings, Notification center and take it out of the
notification center and make sure that only sounds is checked. Flick the mute
switch on when you don't want the chimes or just go back into the settings,
notifications and turn sounds off.
Each app that is in the notification center has a button that says Notification
Center on, or off when you double tap it.

if this app is available from multiple countries, then the name of the

Hi,

Ok since I see that it is actually a professional recording I have decided to
try it. I have been wanting an actual clock with chimes for a while now.

A couple of questions about the app though. I assume that you have to have it
launched in order for it to chime? I also am wondering if it works while
backgrounded. I ask because after I installed and launch I was expecting it to
chime on the hour while it was backgrounded and it didn't. Am waiting to see
what happens on the half hour. I will admit that after not chiming the hour I
turned on the 15 minute chime and it went off at the quarter hour as expected.

2012-10-21 Thread Richard Turner
Ron, I just discovered another way to stop the chime from interfering with
other apps.
Tap the volume button, up or down.
Just one quick tap and the chime cuts out.
Easier and quicker than the mute switch.

I just tried that while listening to the BBC and the half hour chime began
and the stream from the BBC went away, I tapped the volume button and the
chime stopped immediately.

HTH,

RE: Big Ben

2012-10-21 Thread Richard Turner
Keith,
It only chimes if you have it set to the quarter hours. The developer has
heard the requests to have the ability to just have it chime on the hour and
plans to add that feature, but he said that may take a few weeks.
It will certainly chime in the background and while the device is locked if you
have the sounds set to on in the Notification center. It does not have to be
in the foreground to work.
If you set the do not disturb to a schedule to not interrupt at night, it will
stop chiming according to that schedule.

For $0.99, I think it is a fine app, and the developer has been very responsive
to questions and suggestions.

Ron,
I just did a test when writing in Fleksy when Big Ben began chiming at 8:45.
I had no trouble continuing to write in Fleksy while the chime was going on.
I could hear VoiceOver just fine. I wonder if you have your sounds set to a
very high volume that is drowning out VoiceOver?
The only place Big Ben has interfered with anything is what I wrote earlier
about streaming a radio station.

I have my sound volume set to 45%.

told to flick the mute switch and it works but it's a pain.

The developer wrote back to me to say he was fixing the adjustment to be
separate for the quarter hour and the hour so it doesn't turn off if you
want only the hour.

RE: Big Ben

2012-10-21 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

I wrote to the developer and he says that will be fixed soon. In order for it
to work right now, it needs to have the quarter hour turned on or it won’t work
at all. I asked him to have a selection for the hour only, the hour and half
hour and keep the one for the quarter hour so we have a choice. Personally, I
like the hour and half hour but I find the quarter hour a bit much.

Tap the volume button, up or down.

Just one quick tap and the chime cuts out.

Easier and quicker than the mute switch.

I just tried that while listening to the BBC and the half hour chime began
and the stream from the BBC went away, I tapped the volume button and the
chime stopped immediately.

2012-10-24 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Alex, this is not correct and this is only adding to the
confusion. I looked up Richard's message in the archives from a few days
ago and he gives the link to the app we are all talking about.

Here is the link to the true Big Ben app:

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/bigben/id301046876?mt=8

It is by Ettore Software.

Re: Big Ben

2012-10-25 Thread Teresa Cochran
I think a somewhat confusing discussion was started concerning two apps for
sounding alarms.

One is called Westminster Chimes, and has an electronic simulation sound for
alarm chimes. The other is Big Ben, and has a high-fidelity sampled recording
of Big Ben.

Westminster Chimes URL:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/westminster-chimes/id454337716?mt=8

Big Ben URL: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bigben/id301046876?mt=8

RE: Big Ben

2012-11-28 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Hi, Hope. Hope you enjoy big ben as much as I do. When you first go into
the Big Ben app the screen seems blank. There's only one button which is
unlabeled. When you find it, double tap and that will let you into the rest
of the app where you can set chime frequency and other things. You still
need to make sure your sounds are on in settings, notification, big ben.
When I don't want to hear the chimes which I now have set to ring at the
quarter hour, I just hit the mute switch. You can also turn the sound off
in settings, notifications, big ben. HTH.
God bless!

RE: Big Ben Problem

2012-10-25 Thread Richard Turner
The volume is determined by the sound volume setting on your phone.
Perhaps his sound files are louder to start with than others, but I find
that if I set the sound volume under settings to 45 percent, it is a nice
level for everything for me and I can still hear VoiceOver when the chimes
are going off.
Now, for some who might be hard of hearing, that might not work.

Hi Kawal

that would be a lot harder to do because the sound is played by the
notification system of the OS and my application is not "asked" by the OS at
what volume to play the sounds.

I would probably have to include sets of sounds recorded at low, medium and
high volumes and give users that choice. It would make the size of the app
bigger but it might achieve the desired result?

thanks for your feedback,

Riccardo

Is it also possible to have a volume button as well because when I listen to
a book or something, Big Ben drowns out the voice but it does not drown out

I was the person who heard some chimes on You Tube as I thought they were

RE: Big Ben in notification? where?

2012-10-20 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
Try turning the rotor to headings once you are in the notification screen.
Then, flick down to the heading that says "not in notifications."
Then, flick left to go back to the bottom of the list of apps in
notifications or right to get to the ones that are not currently in
notifications. It should be there somewhere.

Glad you got the real one.

HTH,

Ron and others,

The direct link in the U.S. store is:

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/bigben/id301046876?mt=8

The developer's name is:

Ettore Software Ltd.

The app is simply called "Big Ben" not Big Ben Pro or anything else.

Description from the app store:

Description
During 2009, the UK Parliament celebrated the 150th anniversary of its world
famous
Clock Tower, Great Clock and Great Bell.
The name Big Ben is often used to describe the tower, the clock and the bell but
the name was first given to the Great Bell. 1859 was the beginning for all three
elements when the Clock Tower was completed, the Great Clock started on 31 May
and
the Great Bell’s chimes were heard for the first time on 11 July.
Have your iPhone (or iPod Touch) display the time of day in style.
Options include:
adding a digital clock display
showing a seconds hand
having it make a tick-tock sound
having it chime and toll on the hour
Pointless? Maybe. Decorative? Certainly.
NB Sounds will only play through earphones on 1st gen iPod Touch.
Thanks to all who left comments and suggestions for improvement. In particular
to
Dave, whose persistence finally motivated us to release this new version.
What's New in Version 2.0
new high quality Big Ben art
day photo from 7am, night from 8pm
new high quality sounds
now chimes the Westminster Quarters, even when the app is not running (can be
turned
on/off in the options)

HTH,

Richard

Hello Richard.

I downloaded Big Ben from the link you pasted in another mail. Since putting
it on my phone, the App has not worked yet. I opened it, turned Tick Tock off
but did not switch the quarterly chimes on. So as yet, even though a couple of
hours has passed, not a peep from Big Ben. So how is it supposed to work?
Also, when Do not Disturb comes on at night, will it stop? How do you put a
schedule on it as I see nothing like that.

Thank you very much Richard.
