Re: Could somebody who has an Airplay device test Airplay
Possible solution to resolve the issue: Dear all, my wife, visually impaired, relies on voiceover a lot and she also notices this iOS8.1 bug which will stream both voiceover and music to airplay. The intended feature prior to iOS8.1 works well where voiceover should remain on iPhone speaker while music streams to airplay. We finally find out what causes the problem and work out the way to resolve the problem. Hope this helps other who encounter the same issue before Apple's next iOS upgrade to remove the bug. There is a new feature called audio ducking in iOS8.1. It will duck the audio when an alert/message comes in. As my wife cannot see, she has to set voiceover always on. When she listens to music and an alert/message comes in, the music will lower (i.e. duck) so that she can hear clearer the alert. A very good new feature indeed. By default, iOS8.1 has enabled this audio ducking. One day, she suddently notes that both music and voiceover get airplayed to speaker. We manage to identify the cause after a few resetting and debugging and find out that she has accidentally disabled audio ducking. Therefore, we would like to share with you all who are disturbed by the problem: Before you airplay, please enable audio ducking first (set audio ducking to on); voiceover will then stay on iPhone speaker and music gets airplayed. It works on our iOS devices and we hope it helps you too. OK, now I did another reboot of my iPhone and was able to select Airplay and with great relief I am finding that Voiceover remains on the device and is responsive. RE: Could somebody who has an Airplay device test Airplay
Hi Eric, That is another excellent discovery. I just tried this on my 5S and was able to reproduce this. I usually want my media to lower in volume to hear Voiceover so I have audio ducking on and I don’t even have it in my rotor. But I just put it in and turned it off and as soon as I sent my Audible book to Sonos via Airplay Voiceover went with it. Turning audio ducking on while the Airplay stream is ongoing does not return Voiceover to the iPhone, but when I switched all audio back to the iPhone and then turned audio ducking on Voiceover stayed on my phone. I will write to Apple Accessibility about this since I don’t see any sense in sending Voiceover to an Airplay device as it introduces an inacceptable lag of 3 to 4 seconds so this should be fixed so that people who want to turn audio ducking on can do that without any other negative results. There is also still the problem that after you use Airplay SIRI will not work. Right now that I used Airplay, SIRI will beep to listen and immediately the other beeps play indicating it has finished listening. Somebody else reported this and at this point I would have to reboot my phone. Not sure if in time SIRI would work again, but I am surprised this hasn’t come up more as it even seems to be like this without Voiceover. At least if I turn Voiceover off at this point it does the same thing, maybe if Voiceover is not running to begin with it works. Hi, I know someone who was complaining about this very issue over the weekend. She is on this group, however, I will forward this message to her just to make sure she does not miss this tip. I had not noticed the bug since I usually airplay from my PC and not from my phone. Merv -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Eric, Thank you, thank you, thank you! It seems you’ve solved this mystery. I was seeing the same issue with AirPlay and couldn’t figure out why the issue was present on my iPhone 5s and not at all on my iPad Mini. Once I turned audio ducking back on, AirPlay now works as it should, leaving VoiceOver coming out through my phone as before. Hopefully, Apple will fix this but at least now there is a work around for the issue. RE: Could somebody who has an Airplay device test Airplay
Hi merv, When you say it doesn't work, do you mean you don't get an Airplay option at the bottom right of the Control Centre or that it works, but Voiceover goes to the Apple TV as well? RE: Could somebody who has an Airplay device test Airplay
Hi Tim, Could you check it again and be a bit more specific, e.g. what Airplay device do you have and when you say not reliable do you mean the Airplay button doesn't always show up or that Voiceover goes to your Airplay device rather than staying on the iPhone or iPad? I am trying to get a sense as to what exactly is going on but it's important to specify the exact iDevice model and what Airplay device and what exactly is working, not working or not reliable. Re: Could somebody who has an Airplay device test Airplay
I've only used my iPhone 5S with my airport express, but it has worked fine. It seems like it took a little longer to see the airport express, but once it did, VoiceOver stayed on the device and audio went to the express and into my stereo. Did the iPod Touch work correctly before iOS 8? If so, that sounds very much like another bug. RE: Could somebody who has an Airplay device test Airplay
Hi Richardm, Yes, I am 99% certain the iPod was OK with Airplay before and that Voiceover stayed on the device. Anyhow, it’s OK with my 5S and I posted this because I am hoping somebody else with an iPod Touch Fifth Gen who has an Apple TV or Airport Express could test this and see if they get the same result. I would also be curious to know how iPads of various generations do.
