Re: Interesting bug in Bard App

2013-10-17 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, it has to do with small glitches in the mark up or whatever they use
as part of the daisy conversion. The announcements are there still from
the cassette recording imports, but there is code which tells the player
to skip at point x and jump to point y. This is far faster to do than
editing the recordings to take out the cassette announcements. I've seen
the Victor reader and the Book Sense do the same thing as well. However
I would write the BARD NLS email address and hope that they have an
unlimited mailbox size so they can go through all of it when someone is
home.

Greetings:
The bug I am about to describe only occurs when reading a Bard book
that was converted from cassette to digital format. Here's what
happens. You are reading along, and you suddenly hear a phrase such
as end of side x where X is any side number. Suddenly, the book
jumps back by at least one navigation unit. How far the book jumps
back depends upon the mark up present in the book. In some books,
this can be a chapter, while in others whose mark up is not as
thorough, you can jump to the beginning of a part or story you are
reading.
I realize that nothing can be done about this until the Government
opens again, I wonder, however, if anyone else has encountered this one.

2013-10-15 Thread Richard Ring
Hearing an announce about the end of a side doesn't bother me one bit. However,
for example, while reading a collection of three Stephen King novels, when
hearing such a side announcement, the novel I was reading started over. This
has happened in three different books for me. It's not the out of date side
announcements that are troubling, it's losing my place in the book that I mind
a bit. I can live with it, just wondered if I were the only one experiencing it.

Subject: Interesting bug in Bard App

 Greetings:
The bug I am about to describe only occurs when reading a Bard book that was
converted from cassette to digital format. Here's what happens. You are
reading along, and you suddenly hear a phrase such as end of side x where X
is any side number. Suddenly, the book jumps back by at least one navigation
unit. How far the book jumps back depends upon the mark up present in the
book. In some books, this can be a chapter, while in others whose mark up is
not as thorough, you can jump to the beginning of a part or story you are
 reading.
I realize that nothing can be done about this until the Government opens
again, I wonder, however, if anyone else has encountered this one.

When reading a book that was converted to digital from cassette; I noticed
that in the navigation area it said chapter 9 but I was only in chapter 4.

Hi Rich,

Yes, I had the same thing happen with a book converted from cassette. It
will definitely be worth reporting when the shutdown is over.

Best,
Anna

RE: Interesting bug in Bard App

2013-10-15 Thread Terrie Terlau
I also have encountered this twice. I was able to read through the spot as
follows:

The book read the end of track message and then jumped back a chapter. I
navigated forward till I came to the chapter after the one I had been
reading and used rewind. I rewound to before the end of track announcement
and, this time, in both cases, the book did not skip backward.

Re: Interesting bug in Bard App

2013-10-15 Thread brian albriton
There are those books that have the announcement this book was originally
recorded for cassette playback. And more often than not, on different players,
you will indeed hear that site three or side for. It's pretty amusing. And kind
of sentimental I am about it. As for the magazine and announcement from going
from cassette the digital that does actually belong there because it's well
actually true. Enjoy
