Yes, this is something I also did not know, but ti does work on web pages.
As for using the item chooser elsewhere, if you are at the search field and 
flick right once you are on the table index, here you can now flick up or down 
with one finger to move through the items in alphabetic order. It’s a bit 
different as, for example, in Contacts, where you get to the table index by 
touching the very right side of the screen.

Whatever letter or letter combination you type is what iOS displays, but it 
does not have to be at the beginning of the app name hence if you type a “C” 
also “Music” shows up in the list because it has a “c” in it at the end.

The other didn't work for me either. However, I found my mistake. I was not 
focused on the adjustable table index, but on specific items. It works exactly 
like you said. You have to make sure that you are not focused on a specific 
item.

I just tried the item chooser on my home screen running iOS 10.3.2 and the 
three finger swipe does nothing.
However, if you start at the top and do a one finger flick right to the Table 
Index, you can then flick down to jump from a to b to c to d, etc.
That seems to be the only way to move by the heading.
Turning the rotor to headings and flicking down doesn’t work either.

item chooser.  Thanks to Chris and Sieghard.

Message #1:

Did you know once you bring up item chooser via 2 finger triple tap, you can 
then 3 finger swipe left or right to focus on headings, links, form controls, 
or all items?  I had know idea!!!  I just thought I'd give it a whirl, and 
lookie there!  Surprize



Now when you perform a search in Safari, you can bring up item chooser and 3 
finger swipe right/left to only show the headings.

Message #2:
As for doing a search for a particular item on the screen, you want to invoke 
the item chooser. The gesture for this is a 2-finger triple tap.
I suggest again to practice on the home screen. If you have a full home-screen 
(20 apps) Plus 4 in the dock, a 2-finger triple tap on the home screen would 
have 24 items in the item chooser. They would be sorted in alphabetical order 
and at the top of the screen is also a search box and as you type something 
there it narrows down the results.
For example, If you have the Camera, Camfind, Calculator, Calendar and Music 
apps on the home screen and typed a “C” these 4 apps would be the only ones 
left. If you now typed an “A” only Calendar, Camera and Camfind would be left, 
now type a “M” and only Camera and Camfind are left etc.
Whatever letter or letter combination you type is what iOS displays, but it 
does not have to be at the beginning of the app name hence if you type a “C” 
also “Music” shows up in the list because it has a “c” in it at the end.

The Item Chooser also has a "search" option, allowing you to look for a word or 
phrase on the page loaded into Safari. As you type letters, the contents of 
this area changes. You can flick from choice to choice. When you find the one 
you want, doubl-tap it, and you will be taken to the portion of the page with

Just to add what Chris said, if you have a lot of items like for example if you 
use the item chooser on a website with lots of links, you do have also a table 
index and a search field where you can search for a particular item if you know 
the name. As you type each letter the selection is reduced to show only 
matching results.

The item chooser takes the items on the screen and list them in alphabetical 
order.
Just flick through the list and double tap on the one you want.

The Item Chooser also has a "search" option, allowing you to look for a
word or phrase on the page loaded into Safari. As you type letters, the
contents of this area changes. You can flick from choice to choice. When
you find the one you want, doubl-tap it, and you will be taken to the
portion of the page with those words.

I had tried the powering off route with no success. The reset seems to have
done the trick although not after the first time. I ended up doing the reset
with the power and home keys about three times and now the item chooser is
popping right up when called.

wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing this problem or if anyone had
any suggestions to correct it.

Wow! I have that problem too! I thought it was just my phone being weird or 
something, but I guess not. Glad to know it's not just me. It's really really 
common, too. The page will finish loading, and then, boom! Nothing is there. 
And then you hit reload, and everything is back. How strange.

The item chooser is used for finding all the items on the screen without 
scrolling. You can even type in the name of the item you want or just the first 
letter and select what you want.

Once you do the two finger triple tap and narrow your search, double tap
what you want in the results list. This will then bring VoiceOver focus
right to where you want it. Say for example, you are looking for the word
Seattle in an article, you would bring up the item chooser, begin typing
Seattle in the search field, and the below list will continually narrow down
to the possibilities of Seattle. Double tap on one, and there you go,
magically just where you want to be in the article.

Hope that is helpful. Definitely have a play around with it. With more
practice, you'll probably get use to it's features.

Well I'm not sure what to add to what's already been posted below. That
is how it works on the home screen. The real benefit is when you're on a
web page or in an app that has quite a few more items on it than your
home page. In the example I used, I use it on the TiVo app. I wanted to
find the HD broadcast of the superbowl, which I knew would be around
channel 700. I didn't want to swipe down through a hundred channels, so
I brought up the item chooser. Originally it listed all 200 or so
stations, so I double tapped in the search field and started typing
"super". Now the search results were just limited to the items that had
the word "super" in them. This was only like two or three items, so
jumping to the station broadcasting the Super Bowl in HD took less than
a dozen gestures instead of over a hundred. To learn more, read down
through the thread below, and pay particular attention to Traci's post.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of, or has discovered, a keyboard equivalent
for the Item Chooser using a bluetooth keyboard.  I use the verbatim
keyboard so it might even differ slightly from a keystroke on the Apple
bluetooth keyboard, for example.  Thanks.

Once you do the two finger triple tap and narrow your search, double tap
what you want in the results list. This will then bring VoiceOver focus
right to where you want it. Say for example, you are looking for the word
Seattle in an article, you would bring up the item chooser, begin typing
Seattle in the search field, and the below list will continually narrow down
to the possibilities of Seattle. Double tap on one, and there you go,
magically just where you want to be in the article. 

Hope that is helpful. Definitely have a play around with it. With more
practice, you'll probably get use to it's features.

Yes one nice thing about the item chooser it searching isn't merely limited to 
first letter navigation. So you can search for a string and Item Chooser will 
be narrowed to match that string even if it doesn't appear at the beginning.

It was new in IOS 5. I'm sure it's documented somewhere, but I learned
about it on this list and just by giving it a try and playing with it.

It's just a two finger triple tap on any screen. It lists the objects on
the screen for you. There's also a search bar at the top and as you type
into the search bar, it narrows what's displayed to what matches what
you've typed in the search bar.

I think Traci did a good job of explaining where it's useful, but
basically it's wherever you have a lot of objects on a page and you want
to find a particular object quickly.

For those with a braille display, the item chooser is found by doing an 
I-chord. That's space with I. I would love more information on how it can be

Coincidentally, I was planning on posting something similar! I never
thought I had much need for the item chooser, but at the same time, I
was having trouble with the TiVo app, where it would display a list of
the couple of hundred stations available to me. I couldn't figure out
how to move by a page, and it took forever swiping through a few hundred
stations to find the one I was looking for. Something made me think to
try the item chooser, and it was great! I almost instantly found the HD
broadcast of the Super Bowl, which was like on channel 750 or something!
It's been a great revelation for me, and I echo Traci's sentiments below!

Hi,

I would suggest updating to iOS 6. The Item chooser is good in iOS 5, but it's 
more reliable in iOS 6.
