Hey guys, not trying to be a jerk moderator, but if those of you who
have been wondering if it works on the iPhone 5 or any other specific
one would read other messages on the list, or even the iTunes
description, you will definitely get your answers. The KNFB reader
officially only supports the iPhone 5 and newer, but others have
reported success on other devices.

Hope that helps.

I would be happy to pay the $99 for it myself, but I currently have the
iPhone 4S, so I have to wait until I can afford to purchase a more modern
phone supported by the KNFB Reader to get it. As soon as I get a newer
phone, I plan to buy the app for KNFB Reader, as I would love to have a
scanning OCR app. I have Prismo and Text Grabber, but I often have a harder
time getting them to work, so I usually end up using my flat bed scanner
instead.

RE: KNFB reader rocks!

2014-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Misty,

There are a few people on the list who are using KNFB Reader with a 4S.
Officially KNFB says this is not supported and those who use it say it is
definitely slower, but people seem to be getting quite good results. I tried
it on my wife's iPod Touch Fifth Gen and got relatively good results and it
has not as good a camera as your 4S. If the app would be useful for you now
and you plan to upgrade maybe in the next few months I think you would not
regret buying it and using it on your 4S.

Regards,
Sieghard

I would be happy to pay the $99 for it myself, but I currently have the
iPhone 4S, so I have to wait until I can afford to purchase a more modern
phone supported by the KNFB Reader to get it. As soon as I get a newer
phone, I plan to buy the app for KNFB Reader, as I would love to have a
scanning OCR app. I have Prismo and Text Grabber, but I often have a harder
time getting them to work, so I usually end up using my flat bed scanner
instead.

I have Prismo and Text Grabber, but I often have a harder
time getting them to work, so I usually end up using my flat bed scanner
instead.

Yes, open book is the same program I bought. It cost $1000 US back in 1999.

I bought mine in 1994 from America so if you put together the difference on the
dollar, the whole computer system including dec talk pc, megaDots, open book,
the bill was ten thousand dollars which I had to pay myself. Half of it was
given to me in a will by a wonderful man we worked for who wanted to see me get
equipment that I needed while the other half I took out a bank loan for.

chuck, could you give more detail how you read the signs, were they close
up? 20 feet away? did you use the vibrations to tell you if the phone was
level? were these signs on a wall, or lying flat? enquiring minds want to
know!

It amazes me how the App Store his turn so many reasonable people into
extremely miserly human beings. 15 years ago I spent over $1500 for OCR
programs and a flatbed scanner so I could read my mail. It worked about 60%
of the time, and I was very happy with that

Today I went to the desert botanical gardens and walked around with my knfb
reader, reading signs and learning about the desert fauna and how the Native

was amazing. Hundred dollars is a very small price to pay to have magic in

I've had good luck reading things with this app, even on my 4S,
more luck than with any other app I have purchased, or with the
KNFB Reader on the Nokia N 82, for that matter. Oh, I'm not
claiming that it is perfect by any means; but, for my purposes of
sorting my mail and the like, I am able to get good enough
results to get the job done to my satisfaction.

Re: KNFB reader rocks!

2014-09-28 Thread Mary Otten
Frankly, no. I am not waiting to see what else comes out by CSUN. I can't
imagine that anybody else is going to come out with a blindness specific OCR
application. And the mainstream stuff just doesn't have the specific features
that help so many of us get it right.
If you can get good scans with Prizmo or some other similar app, more power to
you. You can save some money. But, to expect someone to come out with a free
application, or nearly free, that has the features we want… Keep waiting.
Perhaps APH will release their OCR app for mainstream android. Of course, as
far as I know, it does not have the features that KM FB has in terms of ease of
orientation for a totally blind person.
But, based on the android special app that APH has, I wouldn't expect that OCR
app to be anything close to free, as it should not be.
So, who do you suppose would release a blindness oriented app for OCR that
would cost, say, $10 or so?

I doubt that anybody is trying to imitate the knFB reader. It has a very

Re: KNFB reader rocks!

2014-09-28 Thread Kelly Pierce
given the enthusiastic response to the KNFB Reader, it would not
surprise me if others are developing similar apps. I imagine some are
working to reverse engineer the KNFB app. Are others waiting to see
what happens between now and the CSUN conference in March?

2014-09-28 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Personally I think it is worth it. I was very skeptical because of the amount
and because of the experience I've had with other OCR apps. However this one I
think is especially geared with people in mind who may not understand exact
photo taking processes. Plus it is very fast.

Now that I bought an iPhone six, the KNFB reader is even better! After taking
a picture, the speech is almost instantaneous! This phone, with this app, is
