It's not free on android. There is a version that uses online that is free. But 
the version with the onboard maps cost the same on both operating systems. It 
had been $100 on android, or 99 something. They drop the price when the iOS 
version came out. There are other differences between the paid and free 
versions, but I don't remember them all off the top of my head.

When you compare the accuracy of the map data you may reconsider.

As Richard said, you can get along by using Google Maps with Blind Square, but 
in my opinion their map data is so poor that you have to use something else; 
and then what are you getting from Blind Square except place data, which Google 
Maps also gives you?

The maps in BlindSquare are, in my opinion, some of the worst available.  They 
come from a source named "Open Street Map", and are free.  When I complained to 
the developer of Blind Square as to how inaccurate they were for my city, and 
asked how could we report map issues to get corrected, he said he was not 
planning for any map correction features; and he only downloaded a copy of the 
map data once a year anyway, and so it wouldn't make any difference to me for a 
long time.

Open Street Map counts on volunteers to correct map data, and while it's 
impressive for a volunteer effort, it's just not the same thing as commercial 
map data.

As for low cost blind navigation programs, I like Arriadne GPS much better; and 
it costs something around $4 and gives you a nicer feel for how streets are 
laid out around you (in my opinion).  It uses Google Map data.

The on board maps are from navteq, you can also choose to use apple 
maps for addresses. For places, you can choose to use google or 
foursquare which are probably the two best sources of this infoormation.

but I'm curious about the update of the onboard maps. The app is 
tempting if only because it consolidates the functions of multiple apps

If they were smart, they would offer a 5-10 buck trial and maybe let you apply

I was a beta tester of this app, and used it on android before that. I 
honestly think this is the best GPS app available for blind users, get 
the app, you will not regret it. If you thought seeing eye GPS was 
good, you will absolutely love this app, it's so much better than 
seeing eye ever was. Really no comparison.

Does anyone know what maps Nearby Explorer uses and how often they're updated? 
I know it uses Open Street and Google Places when necessary, but I'm curious 
about the update of the onboard maps. The app is tempting if only because it 
consolidates the functions of multiple apps into one, and there is no recurring 
subscription charge.

Nearby Explorer is $99 on Android, unless they changed the price in the last 
couple of months.
Nearby Explorer, which I have never used but know someone who uses it on 
Android, has turn-by-turn directions which BlindSquare does not.  
However, BlindSquare along with Google Maps is a great combination.
It all depends on your navigation needs.
