RE: Runtastic Heart Rate Monitors: Take your fitness analysis to the next level!

Hi Andy,

Yes, Runtastic is accessible with a few limitations:

When you first open the app there is a few instructions and it says Page 1
of 3 on the first page. It seems a 3-finger swipe will not advance to the
next page, I had to turn Voiceover off and do a normal 1-finger swipe right
to left, then when I turned Voiceover back on I was on page 2 of 3 and I
repeated this to get to page 3 of 3, then I tapped the Close button at the
top.

After this I came to another page where Voiceover read all the text of a big
list of features and limitations and at the end you have to tap I Agree.
You then can sign in with Facebook or set up a Runtastic account although I
have no idea why anybody would want to share their heart rate with all their
Facebook friends, but then again I think this Facebook integration
everywhere is stupid, of course this is just my opinion and not relevant
beyond stating my opinion.

At some point it told me that in order to measure my resting heart rate you
should do that 2 minutes after waking up and I guess that measurement is
used as a comparison for later measurements throughout the day.

Once you get into the app it will tell you to lightly place your finger over
the camera lens making sure it's completely covered and to hold it still.
You then hear a series of beeps and a triple tone when the measurement is
completed. At that point your heart rate is displayed, but I think it's some
sort of graph and not necessarily very useful for a Voiceover user. However,
there is a Discard and Save button at the top and if you save it, you can
then see your heart rate in the History tab in a fairly straight forward
list format, date and time and the heart rate.

On that initial screen after the measurement you can also once again share
it on Facebook or by email so you could also send yourself an email which
would contain the information. I did this, see below:

I just measured my heart rate with my smartphone camera using the Runtastic
Heart Rate app. Here are my results:

Heart rate: 60
Measurement type: General
Avg resting heart rate: -
Total measurements: 1

It works! Give it a try and download the Runtastic Heart Rate app for

As you can see the average resting heart rate doesn't have a value since I
haven't done this measurement. After you measure there is also an area where
you can specify When Did you Measure. However, this is followed by 5
unlabelled buttons which Voiceover just announces as Button. I have not
taken the time to explore what they might be or ask somebody so I could
possibly label them using the custom label feature. After the When Did you
measure is another area called General and it asks How did you feel. Once
again this is followed by 5 unlabelled buttons.

After that is Additional Info and here you have a text field where you can
Add a note to this measurement, this seems no problem.

Lastly you have the Share It section:

Share Facebook

Share Twitter

Share Mail

That's it. The Discard button is at the top left.

The Save button is at the top right and you have to touch it,if you touch
Discard at the top left and swipe right Voiceover will not go to Save, it
appears to jump right over it, but it's easy to find by touching the screen
underneath the battery status.

After I used it a few times to write this I was at some point presented with
a screen with a Close button at the top which advertised Runtastic's
so-called Premium apps:

Runtastic Pro

Roadbike Pro

PushUps Pro

SitUps Pro

Squats Pro

PullUps Pro

My conclusion: I think this app seems to do what it advertises and it
appears the measurements are sort of accurate.

When I started to write this it showed my heart rate as 60, I then did 25
fast PushUps just to see what it would say and it did say 78, but I don't
have an actual heart rate monitor where I could do a real comparison.

If somebody contacted the developer maybe they would label these 10
unlabelled buttons and make a few improvements.

I think I may have gotten this for free when it was advertised in the App a
Day app, but I must say I haven't used it much. I did keep it on my phone
for now, but I think if you were really serious about fitness and accurate
heart rate measurements getting a heart rate monitor and using an accessible
fitness app which I am sure are out there would probably be better.

I do also wonder how good it is for the camera lens cover to put a sweaty
finger on it all the time, you would probably have to clean it fairly often
if you used the app a lot, I guess otherwise it doesn't hurt it because I am
sure Apple would not allow such
