Re: Trying direct touch typing!
Hi, Sieghard, It's definitely a preference iisue. Tapping feels more like typing to me than lifting. Also, I just can't seem to get the muscle memry of Fleksy, or it may just be that I don't like a lot of audio distraction while I'm typing. The autotext drives me mad. :) I usually proofread after I enter a big block of text. I guess it goes into the category of "to each one's own." :) Teresa "We can see with the eyes, but we see with the brain as well, and seeing with the brain is often called imagination."--Oliver Sacks > On Nov 4, 2014, at 2:27 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: > > Hi Teresa, > > If you slide and verify the character, then lift and tap to type I t, then > why not use regular touch typing which would type the character as soon as > you lift the finger and it will not require you to lift and tap again. Hi Teresa, If you slide and verify the character, then lift and tap to type I t, then why not use regular touch typing which would type the character as soon as you lift the finger and it will not require you to lift and tap again. Just a thought, everybody has different preferences. I really understood the benefits of direct touch typing in combination with auto correct for the first time when I listened to this Podcast and whenever I have time I’ll practice and play around with that. At this point I am still faster using the regular touch typing, but I can really see how the other way could work well with lots of practice and of course even better on an iPad in landscape mode where you could probably really type just as on a keyboard with pretty good results. I’ll have to try this at Christmas time on my Mom’s iPad. I could also see where a tactile screen protector may help with direct touch typing so I probably order one again for my 5S and give it a shot. RE: Trying direct touch typing!
Hi Claudia and Christopher, As Christopher pointed out, direct touch typing works by typing the letter when you tap it not when you lift your finger as in touch typing. If you have auto correct turned on, you can, however, type and just as with Fleksy not worry too much whether you totally hit the exact letter you wanted or maybe the one right next to it because auto correct will do what it is supposed to do and auto correct what you are typing and as soon as you press the spacebar the correct word will usually be written. But you still have to be very good in terms of hitting the letter you want most of the time or maybe be just one letter off. There is an excellent Podcast on www.appleviss.com where the Podcaster shows how this works and while I realized basically how it works, I always thought this was not for most blind people, but with auto correct and lots of practice I think some people will be really good with this. Re: Oops, Disregard, Was Re: Trying direct touch typing!
I'm not quite sure why people like direct touch typing over regular touch typing. In the regular touch typing, you can slide your finger to the letter you want and simply lift your finger to enter the letter, you don't have to tap again. I can only assume I'm missing something. Oops, Disregard, Was Re: Trying direct touch typing!
Sorry, I responded to the wrong thread and got confused. Direct touch typing allows you to slide your finger to the character you want, then you can quickly lift your finger and tap. So it's more like striking a key. Re: Trying direct touch typing!
You have to switch it on in the Braille settings screen. Settings, General, Accessibility, Voiceover, Braille. Once it's switched on, you can press the panning keys, and when you get to the end of a page and press the panning key, it switches to the next page, so you don't have to press a key to go to the next page and then find your place on it.
