As for turning off the phone, there are only 2 ways: 1. Settings > General > Turn off iPhone, to speed it up a bit you can ask SIRI to go to General Settings, then do a 4-finger ap near the bottom of the screen and focus should be on the Turn off button. Of course after you tap it you still have to tap the "Power Off" button. 2. Which phone do you have? I think the technique might be different with the phones with no home button. Try holding the side button for 6 or 10 seconds and the power off button should show up on the screen. Try flipping the mute switch down when you turn it on and see if you don't get a slight vibration as it comes back.
