RE: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-18 Thread Myrna Votta
Sally is the default voice for the Kindle Fire HDX. I know this because I
bought the Kindle. One just needs to go to settings, text to speech and that
is how Joey, Amy and Bryan are downloaded for free. Actually, I had Joey read
a book by a male author to me and I thought that he did a pretty good job. I
find that he reads better when the rated is a bit faster than the default rate.

Hi,
In voice Dream, Salli, Joey, Amy and Brian are the Ivona voices.
BTW, I agree with your description of Salli in another Email.

Joey sounds like he is a major stoner or is and Quaaludes. I cannot decide
which, but either way, he will not be at my eye device.

2014-03-17 Thread Mary Otten
Alex,
As I noted earlier in a Nother message on this thread, I have every reason to
think Kendra will be offered in Voice Dream. Winston seemed to be indicating
that when he responded to my message about Kendra not being available at
present. I certainly have high hopes.

For those who like Kendra, unless it's just me, that voice is coming to voice
dream reader. Winston said more voices are on the way, and I specifically asked
about Kendra when I got that response.

Re: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-17 Thread Mary Otten
I don't know about the books share books, but Sally and Joey are available for
Kindle fire HDX TTS. I forget which one comes as a default, I think it is Sally.

Re: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-17 Thread Mary Otten
when Sally first came out, I heard people saying how much they liked her. My
reaction to her was quite different. She sounds entirely too perky. I don't
need a 15-year-old valley girl reading me my texts. Smile.

I admit that the Amy Voice did an amazing job with that text, but I still like
James. I am waiting for Kendra, my favorite Ivone a voice.

Re: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-16 Thread Dionesque
Oh, really, Alex? This indeed confirms how much different one's perception
of synthetic speech can bee! I haven't tried Kendra in Voice Dream Reader
yet but can't wait to do so, because on PC, with NVDA and with Balabolka, it
has always been my all-time favourite English-speaking voice, especially for
books, I've made myself quite a lot of mp3s by Balabolka using Kendra,
smile!
I'm not English native speaker, maybe this has an impact on my perception,
not sure about it though, for me Kendra sounds very pleasant, not
high-pitched like so many other female voices.

Kind regards,

Barbara

A lot of the Ivona voices aren't great; Sally is good, and the Birtish male
is good. Kendra is horrible, though, and Joey annoys me after a while. That
said, overall the good Ivona voices still have the others beat, I think.
Again, synthesized speech is one of the most subjective things we could
discuss, so I guess it comes down to this: whichever you prefer, VDR now
offers four voice manufacturers to pick from. The other Daisy app on iOS
offers only one, and other self-voicing apps similarly lack choices. No
matter how you slice it, you are more likely by far to find a voice you like
in VDR than any other app.

I recorded a humorous item that some may have seen floating around the

I did it to show the qualitative difference not only in the Amy voice from
Ivona, but the way it handles the text.

I had thought James was the best voice in a long time, but Amy blows him
away. I have not yet decided if I am going to purchase the Joey voice from
Ivona.

The Ivona voices are $4.99, but at least, in my opinion, Amy is worth it.

James reads the below text first, then Amy.

Here is a link to the recording, which is 1 minute 37 seconds in length.

RE: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-16 Thread Richard Turner
I'm glad you asked that question. I had no idea until I just did a Google
search that Amazon has purchase Ivona.
Sadly, nothing on the web that I have found identifies the voices used on the
Kindle Fire, other than there is only U.S. and U.K. English voices.
That was from the Amazon Kindle Accessibility help page.
However, Bookshare was very clear.
>From the Bookshare web site under formats:
Voicing is provided by the high quality Kendra voice from Ivona, not your
reading tool

There you go.

If you are easily offended by a rood statement concerning shoving an object
in a certain place, don’t bother reading.

I recorded a humorous item that some may have seen floating around the
internet using Voice Dream Reader.

Here is the actual text if you want to read it in braille or compare with
other voices:

Re: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-16 Thread Alex Hall
I haven't used a Kindle, so I have no idea. However, I am almost certain
Bookshare uses Kendra. I think she sounds too broken up - you can almost hear
the individual recorded phonemes. She is not in VDR, by the way. That said,
Bookshare may have switched voices in the year or so since I tried their audio
book service. Once I got VDR, downloading audio books made with a synthesizer
became redundant.

RE: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-16 Thread BBS
Hi all. I don't think Joey is worth buying. Sounds too robotic and so does
Sally. I like the new voice that Ivona has made, Raveena out of all of them.
As for the comment of making the voices available for the Mac, I've wrote to
them time and again to consider making them available. They've said that
they're working on it and that they would come, but I'm beginning to find
that that was just talk.

Yes, Sally is also quite good, as is Joey for the male voice.

Brian, the British male is also quite good.

What voice a person likes is extremely subjective.

The thing that blows me away is how well Amy handled text that was written
without spaces. It parsed the words just like there were spaces between
them.

I'm a fan of Sally over Amy, but I agree that the $3 I spent on James now
feels wasted. Speech is incredibly subjective, but I think Ivona
sounds far better than anything put out by A Capella or the other companies
VDR uses. The only one that can match it is Nuance, with their newest
Expressive voices (like Ava or Oliver).

I agree, Kendra is horrible, and Joey is kind of annoying to me. At least we
have choices, though, you're right about that. And VDR is such a better app
compared to Read2Go.

Re: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-15 Thread Alex Hall
A lot of the Ivona voices aren't great; Sally is good, and the Birtish male is
good. Kendra is horrible, though, and Joey annoys me after a while. That said,
overall the good Ivona voices still have the others beat, I think. Again,
synthesized speech is one of the most subjective things we could discuss, so I
guess it comes down to this: whichever you prefer, VDR now offers four voice
manufacturers to pick from. The other Daisy app on iOS offers only one, and
other self-voicing apps similarly lack choices. No matter how you slice it, you
are more likely by far to find a voice you like in VDR than any other app.

This is probably just me, but I think most of the Ivona voices sound super
flat. I like the Neospeech voices much better, except for Paul. I don't know
why, but I can't stand him for some reason.

I will too. I have Amy on my computer, Amy on my set top box which does
talk by the way and will sure get Amy for my iPad as part of Voice Dream
Reader. Now I just need Amy for the mac grin. Only being sarcastic there
as Alex is quite nice.

Re: a comparison of James, the American male voice and Amy, the British female voice in Voice Dream Reader 3.0

2014-03-15 Thread Alex Hall
I'm a fan of Sally over Amy, but I agree that the $3 I spent on James now feels
wasted. Speech is incredibly subjective, but I think Ivona sounds far
better than anything put out by A Capella or the other companies VDR uses. The
only one that can match it is Nuance, with their newest Expressive voices (like
Ava or Oliver).
