Re: inability to manage ringtones using iTunes

2019-03-29 Thread Robin Frost
Wow lucky you I envy you truly. I’ve tried with the manually manage music
checked and unchecked as suggested by Apple accessibility and it had no impact.
As I said here at least we’ve even had a completely clean uninstall and
reinstall of iTunes with all known files removed but still the problem persists.
Curious what model of iPhone you and Shai are using. One wouldn’t think it’d
matter but in true detective mode trying to nail down every known variable I
thought I’d ask.
I’m using both an iPad pro 2018 version and an iPhone XSMax.
So the mystery continues.

Hello Robin and Shai,

I don’t know if this has anything to do with any Settings in iTunes, but I
cannot confirm your problems with ringtones. Yesterday I only tried it while my
iPhone was connected, but tonight I reconnected it and went to the Tones
treeview and I was still able to arrow down through the tones I copied
yesterday and Jaws read them, I deleted one and after saying Yes to the prompt
whether I wanted remove the item it was gone and the tritone played, I checked
on my phone and it’s definitely gone.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi,

I’m glad it works for you I wish it worked here. I’m getting the same exact
experience as Shai and apparently others according to Google. Very strange
indeed.

Take good care.

Hi Robin,

I am not sure what is causing these problems for you, for me managing ringtones
in this current version of iTunes works as always and Jaws reads the list of
ringtones on the phone just fine. I can also delete ringtones simply by
pressing the delete key.

After I saw your message I decided its time to finally put some of my ringtones
back on my new iPhone 8 which I hadn’t done yet. I opened iTunes and was
presented with a message that there was an update to version 12.9.4, but I at
first declined the update to see how it worked in the previous version, I
forgot now which version that was.

In any case, I was able to copy ringtones to the clipboard, go into the iPhone
section, go to Tones in the sidebar treeview and tab a few times into the
treeview where any tones are listed. At first nothing showed because I had
never put any ringtones on this phone yet. After pressing Control + V I heard
the tritone iTunes makes when it’s done syncing or has completed another task
and Jaws read the tone I had just copied to the phone. I repeated this with a
bunch of other tones, some I copied individually and some I copied in groups of
4 or 5 at a time and it all worked fine and I could arrow down the treeview and
Jaws read everything. I copied also a tone I didn’t want and pressing delete
brought up a prompt asking me if I wanted to delete it.

I then updated iTunes to the version you have, 12.9.4, and I was still able to
browse through the treeview with Jaws reading the tones and their length, I
could press enter or space on any of them to play them and also add more and
delete them.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone else had encountered this issue or could
duplicate it.

I’ve recently discovered that managing ringtones using iTunes on the windows
side is a broken mess. I’m using the latest version of iTunes version

12.9.4.102 under Windows 10. And no matter the screen reader in use JFW version
2019, NVDA 2019 or Narrator the view of tones will appear as though it’s empty
even if you have tones on your phone. If you copy something to it and the
screen readers feel like cooperating it might populate and then speak but
that’s iffy. But more importantly you can’t delete a tone from your device or
iTunes library. If you hit delete on it nothing happens. If you right click
and hit delete in the resulting menu nothing happens. So now you can maybe if
you’re lucky add a tone to your device but you simply cannot delete a tone. I
can’t verify if this issue is present when screen readers aren’t in the mix but
it’s definitely the case when they’re in use.

If anyone has encountered this and found a fix I’d love to hear. If it can be
duplicated and you’d like to join me in reporting it to Apple Accessibility
it’d be greatly appreciated as sometimes greater numbers help when advocating
or reporting accessibility issues.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Sieghard,
For me the issue arises after I place the ring tone on the phone and
exit iTunes. When I connect my phone to the computer on a subsequent
session and open iTunes the ring tones that have been copied to the
phone are not shown any longer even though these are present on the
phone. They are only shown at the initial time they are copied.
