I’ve heard good things about the Scan jig, except that it may be very difficult
for some folks who are DIY challenged to put it together.

I know about the standscan and giraffe stands. I’d appreciate posts from those
of you who have tried these stands or others and your conclusions about how
they work. I would also appreciate pointers to any articles/info about stands.
 Thanks.

Re: iphone stands

2015-03-12 Thread Richard Turner
There are two stands that I would recommend over the Giraffe Reader and
Standscan at this point.
Scanjig, $40.00 plus shipping, which is made out of hard plastic and is quite
sturdy, but may be a little bulky for those who want to take it on the go. It
measures about 9 by 13, by 1.5 inches when closed up.
Then, in a week or so, the latest version of the Fopydo stand will be available
through Amazon. The one currently on there is an old version, but the creator
has come up with a much improved model. It will sell for $12.00 plus shipping.
It is made from the same kind of corrugated plastic as the Giraffe Reader, but
far more versatile because it will work with any size phone and even small
tablets. Once it is out, he will have a video and written instructions to help
a blind person assemble it themselves. It is in one piece, so assembly isn't
really accurate, more how to unfold it and snap the tab in place that creates
the platform for your phone.
It will allow raising the height to be able to scan longer documents or both
pages of a book. He is also working on an accessory to help with scanning books.
I will post the direct link to Amazon when it is available. I have both the
Scanjig and Fopydo stands in my office and think they are both excellent
choices, depending on what your scanning needs are.
HTH,
Richard

RE: iphone stands

2015-03-12 Thread Judy Holloway
Hi. I have the Standscan Pro and I like it very much. I bought it about a year
and a half ago when there were no other products like this available. I also
bought the extra battery pack which uses eight AA batteries, which provides
plenty of light. It costs about $40 for the Standscan Pro and the battery pack.
They also sell the standscan without the light. The website for the standscan
pro is , I think. it's made in Hong Kong, but it's a good
product, especially with the KNFB reader.

Thanks.

Hi Richard.

I look forward to this.

I hope the Fopydo will be possible to ship for Denmark.

I would really be interested in a device which works for bookscanning, at that
point standscan is a little difficult, I am not able to get alle the text on a
page, I know newer phones can easily mannage, but standscan can not.
Isn’t it a problem that these devices do not have light built in?

I use an IPhone 6 plus.

Best regards Annie.

2015-03-13 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Annie,
I've found that with KNFB Reader anyway, if I'm in the dark and use the flash,
it works very well. They are designed so there are no shadows cast on the
document.
I will do a few more tests in a dark room with the flash on auto and let you
know my results.
To the person who mention the StandScan Pro, I like it to, but it is not as
sturdy as these others and it is more difficult to unfold and flatten out than
these the ScanJig or Fopydo stands.

Re: iphone stands

2015-03-13 Thread Richard Turner
I don't think he has set up a list, but he will send me the link when it is
available and I will send it to this list.
BTW, I do not get anything for doing that. I was able to test the stand and my
opinion, it is very good.
I plan to buy one for my personal use for those times when I don't want to fire
up my computer and use OpenBook.
I think for some people, they may want to have both the ScanJig and the Fopydo
stands.

The ScanJig will allow you to use an iPad.
One of the things I like about it is that it will work with any sized device.

Hello,
The only stand I’ve used and am still using is the ScanJig. I get extremely

Re: iphone stands

2015-03-13 Thread Chris Smart

Richard. Thanks for this info.

So what would you recommend specifically for book
scanning? Wait for the specific Fopyto accessory for that to come out?

At 12:39 AM 3/13/2015, you wrote:
There are two stands that I would recommend over
the Giraffe Reader and Standscan at this point.
Scanjig, $40.00 plus shipping, which is made out
of hard plastic and is quite sturdy, but may be
a little bulky for those who want to take it on
the go. It measures about 9 by 13, by 1.5 inches when closed up.
Then, in a week or so, the latest version of the
Fopydo stand will be available through Amazon.
The one currently on there is an old version,
but the creator has come up with a much improved
model. It will sell for $12.00 plus shipping.
It is made from the same kind of corrugated
plastic as the Giraffe Reader, but far more
versatile because it will work with any size
phone and even small tablets. Once it is out, he
will have a video and written instructions to
help a blind person assemble it themselves. It
is in one piece, so assembly isn't really
accurate, more how to unfold it and snap the tab
in place that creates the platform for your phone.
It will allow raising the height to be able to
scan longer documents or both pages of a book.
He is also working on an accessory to help with scanning books.
I will post the direct link to Amazon when it is
available. I have both the Scanjig and Fopydo
stands in my office and think they are both
excellent choices, depending on what your scanning needs are.

If you're using the Scanstand with an iPhone 6

Re: iphone stands

2015-03-13 Thread Richard Turner
Larry,
If you don't ever plan to have a phone of a different size, the Giraffe Reader
will do fine, though unless something has changed, it is a bit more expensive.
The ScanJig is far more flexible in that you can use any size device with a
simple adjustment.
I have access to all 4 stands, StandScan Pro, ScanJig, Giraffe Reader, and
Fopydo.
I would rank them in this order:
1. ScanJig.
A very close second, FopyDo's new version.
3. StandScan Pro.
and 4. Giraffe Reader.
I put it last because it is the most expensive and the most limited.

Richard

2015-03-14 Thread Terrie Arnold
The scan jig is made of cardboard that's the one drawback I see about it that I
know of.
I don't know what the giraffe is made out of but spending 30 bucks for a piece
of cardboard that you fold I think that's just a little ridiculous it was made
out of some plastic that you know I wouldn't wear out after a while and I could
see spending 30 bucks for it but not not just cardboard and some LED lights on
a Velcro strip is Lisette's what I have heard so that's my help to you so and I
think the giraffe will fit the six or 6+ on it where the other one you're just
stuck with the the 5S or smaller or the other or the four so I hope this helps
you have not got one of these yet hoping they're going to come out with one
that's more sturdy that won't wear out and fall apart if it gets wet with rain
or other liquids that might get spilled on it so go and see I hope somebody
else responds on here as to what the giraffe is made out of because I truly do
not know what it is but.

Re: iphone stands

2015-03-14 Thread Richard Turner
Terri,
The ScanJig is made out of hard plastic, not cardboard and costs $40, and is
well worth it partly because it can be used with any device from tablets to
smart phones..
The StandScan is made out of heavy cardboard that is covered in a thick resin
and has the lights in it and costs $34.99 or the power bundle with the AC
adapter and two different battery packs for $38.99.
The Giraffe Reader is made out of corrugated plastic and costs $60 and can only
fit one size phone.
The FopyDo stand is made out of corrugated plastic and will cost $12 and can
fit any sized phone and small tablets.
As I have said before, I have access to all four of these stands and have
communicated with all of the designers directly.

compared the two? I would very much appreciate any thoughts you might have on
the stands. Thanks.

The FopyDo that should be available to order in the next week or so.

That corrugated plastic is quite durable and it provides the most flexibility
and it is an amazing price.

The creator is going to send me the link as soon as it becomes available.

It will have a longer name since it is a newer model, but I’m not sure of the
final wording he settled on. It will still start with “Fopydo.”

Stay tuned.

2015-03-16 Thread Feliciano Godoy
I have the standscan with the power bundle. I purchased it with the intention
of having it stationary. After sometime, the tabs get a little harder since it
is used to being in that position without being open. That is the only
complaint I have with it, but that is expected when it is not being unfolded.
