Re: question about iPhone batteries and cases.

2013-07-12 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Esther.

It seems as they they will ship internationally, there is no warning that they
can not ship to my destination.

But do I need a special power adapter to use them in Denmark? What do I need to
buy and where? I guess that I will need a converter or something.

Cheers Annie.

Re: question about iPhone batteries and cases.

2013-07-12 Thread Esther
Hi Annie,

If you got the MyCharge Hub 6000 from Amazon, you'd have to use a plug adapter
at the end of the two-prong plug to recharge it in Denmark or elsewhere in
Europe, since this device is only made for US two-prong outlets, not the
European ones. That's less convenient, because for outlets in the U.S.,
Canada, etc. you can flip down the two prongs and plug the battery for recharge
into an outlet and have it sit flush against the wall, with no need for any
extra support. That might still work with an additional adapter plug, but
you'd have to check that. This battery does not speak its chatprge levels like
the MyCharge Peak 6000 that Sieghard has.

You can download PDF instruction booklets for all their product models from
their web site:
http://www.mycharge.com/collections/instructions

Just navigate to the link for the product you want, such as Hub 6000. The
MyCharge Hub 6000 is about the size of two iPhone 4 or 4s models stacked on top
of each other -- that is, it's slightly shorter than the iPhone 5, and about
two and a half times as wide. It's shaped like a small book volume, with a
curved spine. If I hold it in my right hand, with the curved spine against my
palm, the charging plug prongs that can be flipped out are at the bottom of the
pages side of this book. There's a strong, rubbery flap that you can flip
down to access the plug prongs. I pull this down with my left hand, then stick
the thumbnail if my left hand into one of the recessed slots for the plug
prongs to flip them up. If you follow that (closed) rubbery flap down and
around the corner of the device to the underside of the battery, you'll feel
another rubbery flap that opens from the side near the curved spine that's
against the palm of my hand. Opening that flap gives you access to a standard
USB connector. You can plug in the USB end of any of the iOS charging cables
here. You can also use this port of MyCharge Hub 6000 to power an external
hard drive that requires being connected to two laptop USB ports, or an
external power supply to work. (This is according to a review by someone using
such a large capacity drive attached to his MacBook Air, with a limited number
of USB ports — I haven't checked this.)

If you use your index finger to feel along the top side of the MyCharge Hub
6000 close to the spine by your palm, you'll feel two rubbery strips, side by
side, each half the width of the rubbered section. (Actually, you'll only
really feel the notch between the two strips at the slightly raised edge close
to the spine.)' One flap will feel slightly textured near the raised part.
That's the flap on the right side if I hold the battery as though I were
plugging it into a wall socket, with the flat side facing away from me. This
right flap has a micro-USB connector embedded when you pull up on the flap. The
long end of the micro-USB connector faces the center line between the two
flaps, and the textured flap carries inset letters for MIcro. The flap on
the left side has a lightning connector attached that you can plug into the
base of your iPhone 5 or newer model iPad.

To start charging, after inserting the lightning or micro-USB connector into
your iOS device, or attaching a cable from the USB port at the opposite end,
hold down the power button between the end of the top two power strips and the
curve of the spine for 3 seconds. If your iPhone is connected you'll hear
that chirp sound the device makes when it's just connected to a powered
external source.

I read one blog review that claimed MyCharge planned to make a battery model
with charging plug that would match European outlets, for the convenience of
international travelers, but I couldn't find any corroborating evidence for
that remark.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

RE: question about iPhone batteries and cases.

2013-07-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mich,

There are 2 types of external batteries: battery cases and actual batteries
which means self-contained batteries in their own enclosure.

Battery cases are iPhone cases where the battery is built into the back of
the case. It simply means the back of the case is thicker and usually these
cases connect to, in your case, the 30-pin adapter of your iPhone. You
simply charge the phone by charging the case and you typically have to take
the phone out of the case if you want to connect it to the computer.

True external batteries on the other hand are just separate units and for
the most part they charge your phone with the normal cable that comes with
your phone and which you plug into the USB port on the external battery
instead of your computer or wall adapter.

One battery I know of for sure has a 30-pin connector built right onto the
battery itself along with a micro USB and a Blackberry connector is the
MyCharge Peak 6,000 which I own. It also has a USB port so you could use the
cable that came with your phone or you could plug it straight into the
30-pin connector which is on a super short, about 1 inch long cable. The
MyCharge Peak 6,000 is the model which has speech built in, it tells you
when it's done charging, when you plug in a device and you can push a button
on the battery and it tells you how full the battery is.

I bought it at Future Shop last November for $99, so you could probably
order it on www.FutureShop.ca and it should be free shipping since it's over
$25.

I personally prefer external batteries over battery cases. First of all,
battery cases usually have at most enough juice to charge your iPhone once,
i.e. maybe 1,400 MA, many have only 1,000 or 1,100 which won't even charge
your phone to 100% if it's fairly empty. The MyCharge Peak 6,000 is a 6,000
MA battery and you get 3 or 4 charges out of it. You can check it out in
detail at http://www.MyCharge.com.

The disadvantage is the bulk of a battery such as the Peak 6,000. As a
general rule, the larger the capacity the larger is the battery. The
MyCharge Peak 6,000 is not a lot larger than the iPhone, but it is thicker
and it's probably not a battery you want to carry around unless you have a
small backpack with you or at least are wearing a jacket with larger
pockets.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: question about iPhone batteries and cases.

Hi All,

MyCharge has recent battery packs for charging iOs devices with Lightning
connectors, like the iPhone 5, iPad Mini, and latest generation iPad. You can
read the iLounge review of the MyCharge Hub 6000 Portable Powerbank with
Lightning:
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/mobile/reviews/mycharge-hub-6000-portable-powerbank-with-lightning/
Here's a shortened link to the URL for the iLounge Mobile Edition review, in
case that link wraps:
http://bit.ly/12a4Qtg
You can use the Safari reader button. The ratings are displayed as images, but
I take a screen shot and use Prizmo to read this off as Highly Recommended,
which means a grade of A or A minus. (Prizmo has a convenient button option for
Last Taken Picture. I double tap on the document, then instead of double
tapping the Recognize button, I first double tap on the Readability button
near the bottom right corner of the screen, and then double tap on the White
button for Text color at the bottom right of the Readability screen, which
inverts colors for OCR, and let's the rating images be recognized. Then I
double tap the Apply button in the top right corner to return to the previous
screen, and double tap the Recognize button to perform the OCR. The text
result comes back as Highly Recommended.)

Annie, these MyCharge Hub 6000 Portable Powerbans have both lightning and
micro-USB connector plugs attached to the battery. They're also sold at the
U.S. Amazon site, but I don't know whether they'll ship this internationally.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
