Apple has their own equivalents of programs like Word, Excel and Powerpoint, they are Pages, Numbers and Keynote. There are, however, iOS apps also for Word, Excel and Powerpoint and they are apparently reasonably accessible, but that of course does not mean they are efficient to work with compared to the versions on the PC. Thanks Sieghard for your help. I copied it. Guess I better go and check that there’s a space between enough and two. Maybe it was a typo in the original. Hi Reggie and List: I still use a Windows computer for the Web and other long writing tasks. To my surprise, Safari on my iPhone works very well with my Texas Bank site and I have quit using my computer to do banking because I think Ios is more secure. It might help to make a list of tasks you wish to do and go from there. Please write me of list. Since the work is done and I already have this PC runjnin/g I'll be more careful when the time for change comes. At least I managed to choose specific motherboard, RAM and SSD so it works like a charm, 20 seconds from pushing the button to desktop, another 20 seconds for Jaws to speak, this is really great for Windows PC. But, we're getting off topic here so thanks for the tip for Mini PCs./ S poštovanjem Gordan Radić 2.8.2018. u 18:31, Sieghard Weitzel je napisao/la: Just one comment regarding PC form factors. You mentioned you found a horizontal desktop case and I mention this in case Reggie might consider a PC again. You can get so-called mini PC's from a number of manufacturers, Intel, Asus, HP are just some. These are basically desktops which you can get with full I3, I5 or I7 desktop processors, most support at least 16 and more often 32Gb of RAM and they have room for 1 or 2 SSD's. They are the size of a Mac Mini or in some cases maybe just a tiny bit larger, but still very small more or less square boxes with HDMI and/or DVI monitor outputs, usually 4 rear USB and two front, of course RJ45 ethernet as well as wireless and bluetooth modems and a 3.5mm combination headphone/microphone jack. In the case of the HP EliteDesk mini PC's they even have very basic built-in speakers, but they are not very loud. Some of these like the Intel NUC (it stands for next unit of computing) come with wall-mount brackets and I really like these little PC's, they are as powerful as you want them to be and they are small and silent. Sometimes when the fan really kicks in on my HP units you can hear it, but not usually. Here in Canada these sell for usually around $600 to $900 depending on how much RAM, how large anSSD and so on. You can buy cheaper desktops and laptops in the price range, but if you want a quality desktop in a very small form factor then these are great. Some people already said some good things, Sieghard made some nice points and here's my point of view. First of all, I'm 42 year old and I started using PC when I was 20 in 1996. I got my first dumb cellphone at age of 23 in 1999. I actually spent first half of my life using landline phone and some overgrown calculators such as ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64. When I started to use PC I used it for almost everything. Web browsing, email, chat, VOIP telephony, writing and reading documents, whatching movies, listening to music, whatever you can think of. There was a time when I was using my PC as alarm clock xD. I started to use smartphones as of 2004. or something and I got my first iPhone on 2012. I have to say I use my iPhone to some level but if I need to do some serious writting, some extended websearch, even for reading 50 emails or more I'd rather sit in front of my desk and turn my PC on. Maybe this is easier for sighted folks to acomplish on small touch screen but I'm pretty much bounded if I can't use keyboard with all ten fingers. For some years now I was using iPhone and Windows laptop but since I'm passionate music listener some months ago I purchased Minix Windows box and connected it to my TV and HiFi system. I wasn't satisfied with performance, it was to slow using Windows 10 and Jaws on just 2 gigs of RAM so I replaced it with serious desktop machine with I5, 8 gigs of RAM and SSD. Of course, I found horizontal desktop case and put it in my living room below the TV set. Now I have a decent multimedia player, have my screen reader talk through HDMI and TV speakers while other sound plays through HiFi system. I turned my dumb Grundig TV into a smart one xD. i could use something from iOS family like old iPad or iPod touch for this purpose and I tried but it was not so comfortable. I have to say I never learned to use iOS with a keyboard and I have 14 years of experience with Jaws and later NVDA so this was also one of the reasons I decided to get this PC instead of some iOS device. Before Minix I tried Apple TV but I got very disapointed with its capabilities. I wanted to be able to browse the web and read email but there's no such thing on Apple TV. Maybe I should have go for Mac Mini instead of Windows desktop, the price was more less the same, I don't know but I don't have the time to learn new system and new screen reader and on the other hand Windows and Jaws are part of me for more than twenty years. So, the answer is I like my iPhone, as a matter of fact I can't live without it but still can't

Hi, first, please call me Reggie. I can't take credit for my tag line. It actually was in a short newsletter on Yorkshire terriers. There was no credit given so I stole it. LOL! I loved it also, and it got my guide and pet an extra hug. Of course you know what happens when you assume it is fine, but so far the writer has not shown up to give me what-for for using. Thus, assuming, be my guest to use. As for my age? I was born in 1952. Yup, one of those oldies! Reggie and Lex God said, "I need somebody strong enoughto pull sleds and find bombs, yet gentle enough to love babies and lead the blind. Somebody who will spend all day on a couch with a resting head and supportive eyes to lift the spirits of a broken heart." So God made a dog. I still do my best work sat at a desk with a real keyboard which I use both hands on. This is how I got into it, so a bit late to change to one-handed. I also have a huge collection of legacy files I want/need to keep, so this almost eliminates iOs in the absence of a navigable file system. There are partial solutions to both of these, but not total solutions to the level we had at the beginning. RE: what to replace a couple devices with
Hi Reggie, Whether you can get buy with only an iPhone you should know and it almost sounds like you already answered it since you said you never use your Mac Mini. I personally don't think an iPad will give you that much more in terms of useability, definitely it would for a sighted person or somebpdy with partial vision which is still useful. An Apple Watch is primarily designed to be a health/fitness device, yes it gives you notifications and you can even make phone calls with it, sent a brief, already provided answer to a text message or use it for Apple pay, but I doubt you would find yourself trying to send lengthy messages and so on. If you have home automation devices it can also be useful. For me personally a PC is essential, for one thing I have my retail business and need to use Excel on a daily bases as well as my Windows-based point of sale software, but I know even if I were retired and would primarily do web browsing, emails and so on I would not want to miss a PC. I have been using an iPhone for almost 10 years now and consider myself a fairly advanced user, I love how easy it is to do certain things with certain apps like Sonos for example, maybe quickly check my bank balance or the weather etc., but I can't stand the inefficiency of composing any sort of longer text whether it's an email, writing a long note, a letter and so on let alone trying to use a spreadsheet which many of us find useful even for personal applications. Yes, I can use a bluetooth keyboard, but if I use a keyboard why on earth would I not want to use a laptop or desktop with Windows and Jaws where writing and editing text is so so easy. Also, I can almost guaranty that I would leave very profficient iOS users in the dust when it comes to web browsing, maybe filling out some online form, doing my online banking etc.' If you have time and you don't mind the inefficiency and if it doesn't drive you nuts then maybe an iPhone is OK, but there is a reason why people like myself, Jonathan Mosen and many others who work or want to be efficient and fast use a computer. I have not touched on the issue of costand I'm sure somebody will point out how expensive Jaws is and all that. Yes, if you have to buy it for the first time it is expensive, but if you own it and have kept it up-to-date then I don't consider $120 every two years for a software maintenance agreement expensive, it is $5/month and if it is not money you want to spend then you can always learn/use NVDA. Apparently Narrator is also getting another big boost with the Windows 10 fall update and it is quickly becoming a viable option for a basic user just as Voiceover is on the Mac, all you have to do is press Control+Windows Key+Enter and it starts up. Ultimately everybody has to choose what works for them and while asking what you asked is totally OK and it will result in different people giving you different opinions you are in the end the best judge of what works for you. Re: what to replace a couple devices with
Well, Apple laptops, the current ones that is the MacBook pros, are expensive. You can certainly still get a MacBook Air, and there are rumors that that line might be refreshed this year. I don’t like the keyboard that they’re using these days. I like the one on the air OK. My husband has an old one. But those new keyboards are just not for me. So if your keyboard picky person like I am, you might want to check into that I was a Windows user for many many years. Bottom Mac in 2009, and kept my windows XP machine for things like I’m bossing braille I’m scanning and reading PDF files. I use the Mac, and was hoping that overtime, I would see improvements in certain things like wordprocessing and such. But last year, I bought a Windows machine, because I need to emboss braille and read PDF files including tables with links that are accessible. I don’t know if you have ever used windows, and if you haven’t, that was probably a road you don’t want to walk down, especially if things like PDF files are not a big part of what you need to deal with. I got frustrated with my Mac, because of safari being busy. A lot. I have 16 gigs of RAM in the Mac Mini, so there shouldn’t be any excuse for that kind of nonsense. Are use my phone for most things. I would love something portable. I have an iPad mini 2, which I did try in the past with a Bluetooth keyboard, and suffered from too many freezeups for it to be a reliable system. Taking notes and having your keyboard freezape are not a good combination. That problem could very well have been solved by now. Re: what to replace a couple devices with
Hi, All! This is quite an interesting thread. I use my iPhone 7+ for just about everything—from purchasing things, ordering groceries, and the like. I have a Dell computer which I bought in 2011 and the only thing I do with that is do word documents and print them on my Braille Blazer—yes, you read this correctly—my Braille Blazer originally from Blazie Engineering. It’s a dinosaur but it still works like a charm. I type readings for church that people dictate to me on my computer, then use my Duxbury Braille translation program and print them out on my Blazer. When that quits, I’ll probably write my dictated material on my Focus 40 Blue and read them that way but for now, my system works for me very adequately. Anyway, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it! ☺️ Esther Levegnale Sent From Esther’s Amazing and Awesome iPhone 7+! > On Aug 1, 2018, at 6:11 PM, Jennie Facer wrote: > > Hi, > The only thing I use a computer for is to print my paystub‘s. Good questions Mary. I partly cannot figure out how to interact with my mini, but most of all I would be stuck at my desk. It is also a 2015 Mini using an old television for a monitor. I have only 4 gigs so I am not able to upgrade, told you need 8 at least. If I could find someone to set it up so I could just get onto it and learn I don't need it for heavy computing. However, nobody in my family knows Apple. I was thinking if it was a laptop I wouldn't have to go through a whole lot of gyrations just to use it since it would be all compact. It frustrates me also because it doesn't talk on its own but needs a monitor and/or headphones. So, yes, just frustrated with it. I agree, though. Re: what to replace a couple devices with
I also use an Apple Watch, kind of forgot about that. I do not think for me and other device is something I need or want at this time. I could use an old computer that belong to my husband and has been completely refurbished, but I like what I am using right now. Re: what to replace a couple devices with
Well, it seems to me the real question is: why don’t you use your Mac Mini? Is it the fact that you were tied to the desk? Or is it the fact that maybe you’re having issues with getting along with voiceover and whatever applications you need to use there? I think rather than talk about what device to get, a better approach might be to think about what it is you want to do with the device you have or what you can’t do with the device you have. Identify those things, and go from there. Just my two cents.
